Unidentified gunmen launched a violent attack on a vigilante office in Umunze, located in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, in the early hours of Thursday.

According to reports, the assailants stormed the facility and set five operational vehicles ablaze, along with portions of the building used by the local security operatives.

An eyewitness who was near the scene recounted the incident, saying,
“The hoodlums invaded the premises in the early hours of Thursday and started shooting indiscriminately.”

“The matter got escalated when the security operatives, in an attempt to resist the gunmen during the gun duel recorded a fatal injury on one of the security operatives.”

Following the exchange of gunfire, the attackers reportedly fled the scene before security reinforcements could arrive.

“About five operational vehicles were set ablaze, and some parts of the security office also got burnt by the hoodlums, who later fled the scene before the arrival of the police-led joint security force,” the eyewitness added.

When reached for comment, the Anambra State Police Command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident.

He stated that security had now been restored in the area.

“The Police-led Joint Security Force had taken over the scene,” he said.

Authorities have yet to release further details regarding casualties or arrests, but investigations into the attack are said to be ongoing.
