Gunmen on Thursday night reportedly attacked a police checkpoint around the Police College area of Agbani road in Enugu, killing no fewer than four policemen and setting operational vehicle ablaze.
The attack, which eyewitnesses said occurred at about 8:42 pm, threw the area into panic as residents scampered for safety amid sporadic gunfire.
An eyewitness who spoke to DAILY GAZETTE on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the assailants arrived in a coordinated manner, opened fire on officers manning the checkpoint, and subsequently set at least one police operational vehicle on fire before fleeing the scene.
“The shooting was intense and lasted for several minutes. Afterward, their vehicle and other items were burning. People were afraid to come out,” the source said.
As at the time of filing this report, the Enugu State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Repeated calls placed to the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Daniel Ndukwe were not answered.
