Governor Mbah,
The Enugu State Government has announced that it achieved 101 per cent coverage in the just-concluded measles and rubella vaccination campaign, exceeding the national benchmark of 85 per cent through what it described as strong field coordination and inter-ministerial collaboration.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof George Ugwu, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Enugu on Saturday following the nationwide immunisation exercise conducted in the state from February 4 to February 13.
He explained that the success was driven by a comprehensive, team-based strategy involving collaboration across ministries responsible for gender affairs, poverty alleviation, information, and education, alongside traditional rulers, religious bodies, and local government authorities.
Ugwu attributed the milestone to the consistent support of Governor Peter Mbah, noting that investments in the health sector had strengthened primary healthcare delivery and improved vaccine storage through functional cold-chain systems.
He said the recruitment of thousands of primary healthcare workers and sustained government backing made it possible to effectively execute the immunisation campaign across communities.
The commissioner also praised the governor’s engagement with health professionals and efforts to improve their welfare, stating that these reforms were attracting medical trainees and specialists to the state.
According to him, more medical graduates are now seeking internship and residency placements at the ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane due to improved infrastructure and leadership within the health sector.
Ugwu further recalled a recent visit by a team from the National Assembly Health Committee, which commended the state’s health reforms and left with favourable impressions.
The statewide campaign targeted children between the ages of nine and 14.
