The Enugu State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on criminal elements across the state, arresting four suspects during coordinated raids on identified hideouts and recovering stolen mobile phones and suspected illicit substances.
The development was disclosed in a statement made available to DAILY GAZETTE by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, who said the operations were part of ongoing proactive strategies to combat crime and enhance public safety.
According to the statement, operatives attached to the Central Police Station (CPS), working in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch, carried out a raid on March 1, 2026, at about 8:00 pm along the Holy Ghost Rail Line in Enugu. During the operation, two suspected habitual thieves — Nnachetam Didiugwu, 20, and Ogbu Maduabuchi, 22 — were arrested.
The suspects, who reportedly have no fixed residential address, are alleged to specialise in snatching bags and other valuables from unsuspecting members of the public, particularly during evening hours.
Recovered from them were four mobile phones of different brands — Honour, Vivo, Tecno and Itel — as well as wraps of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa.
Police said the suspects confessed to snatching the phones from passersby and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
In a related operation, on February 28, 2026, at about 9:00 am., operatives of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, while on routine crime prevention patrol, stormed a criminal hideout at Eke Obinagu in Emene.
Two suspects — Eze Chukwuemeka, 25, and Isiaka Musa, 25 — were arrested during the raid.
A large quantity of dried weeds suspected to be cannabis sativa was recovered from the location.
The Police Command stated that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices and recover additional exhibits.
The arrested suspects will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustained proactive operations aimed at ridding Enugu State of criminal elements.
He urged residents to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and supportive of security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious movements and criminal activities to the police.
