The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) says it is more than 90 per cent ready for the September 26, 2026 Local Government Council elections in the state.
The commission is expected to conduct elections for 17 chairmanship and 260 councillorship positions across the 17 local government areas of Enugu State.
ENSIEC Executive Chairman, Prof. Christian Ngwu, disclosed the level of preparedness on Monday in Enugu, saying only a few outstanding arrangements remained to be concluded ahead of the polls.
According to him, the commission is currently putting finishing touches to its logistics, personnel and security arrangements to ensure a smooth and credible election.
“It is only a few things remaining and we are finalising and putting finishing touches on them,” Ngwu said.
He disclosed that ENSIEC had already trained the trainers of ad hoc personnel, while advertisements for the recruitment of the ad hoc staff had been placed.
He added that the training of the recruited personnel would commence in the coming days.
The chairman further assured that almost all election materials were ready, noting that the non-sensitive materials would be distributed to the various local government headquarters from the commission’s headquarters in Enugu by Thursday, September 17.
“The non-sensitive materials will be leaving ENSIEC headquarters in Enugu latest Thursday, September 17, to council headquarters,” he said.
Ngwu explained that arrangements had also been made for the receipt and secure custody of sensitive election materials ahead of the exercise.
He said the commission was concluding arrangements with transport unions and companies to provide adequate logistics for the movement of personnel and materials on election day.
On security, the ENSIEC chairman said the commission was working closely with relevant security agencies, with the Nigeria Police serving as the lead agency.
He also disclosed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would soon provide ENSIEC with the authentic voters’ register for the state to facilitate the conduct of the election.
Ngwu urged residents of Enugu State to come out en masse and exercise their civic rights without fear, assuring voters and political parties that the commission would provide a level playing field for all candidates.
“I am calling on residents of Enugu State to troop out en masse to cast their votes for their preferred candidates without fear.
“ENSIEC will continue to provide a level playing field for all candidates in the elections.
“The commission will provide a conducive and secure environment and ensure a peaceful, hitch-free, transparent and credible election come September 26 in the state,” he said.
The chairman further disclosed that notices of election had been pasted across the 17 local government areas, providing information on voting procedures and expected standards of conduct before, during and after voting.
Eleven political parties are expected to participate in the September 26 council elections.
ENSIEC had, two weeks ago, concluded a train-the-trainer workshop for its officials as part of preparations for the polls.
Participants included the 17 Electoral Officers, 17 Assistant Electoral Officers, seven directors, five commissioners and the commission’s Administrative Secretary.
