The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District, Chief Kingsley Nweke, has described the district as “bleeding”, calling for stronger media scrutiny of the challenges confronting its residents ahead of the 2027 elections.
Nweke made the call on Sunday after a novelty football match between the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, and Nollywood actors at Ngwo Park, Achara Layout, Enugu.
The PDP candidate urged journalists to remain courageous, professional and uncompromising in reporting issues affecting the people, saying the media had a crucial role to play in holding political leaders and public institutions accountable.
According to him, Enugu East requires a representative with the vision, capacity and preparedness to effectively serve the interests of the people.
“Enugu East is bleeding. We cannot continue to pretend that all is well when our people are facing serious challenges,” Nweke said.
He urged journalists to investigate and report issues affecting the welfare and development of residents, while maintaining professional ethics and providing fair and balanced coverage of political actors.
“The zone needs people with vision, capacity and integrity. I have been delivering good services to the people and wish to be there to accomplish what I have been doing,” he said.
Nweke also called on political leaders and stakeholders to place the interests of constituents above personal or partisan considerations.
He said the 2027 elections should give voters an opportunity to assess candidates on the basis of their character, competence, track record and capacity to effectively represent them.
The PDP candidate further urged journalists not to allow political or financial considerations to compromise their watchdog role, describing the media as a critical institution for strengthening democracy and amplifying the voices of citizens.
