The Enugu State Police Command has arrested five suspects in connection with the alleged vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, including a solar street light, road traffic signs and materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation.

The arrests were made in three separate operations carried out by operatives of the command between September 15 and 27, 2026.

In a statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said two suspects, Wisdom Nuhu and Moses Jonathan, were arrested on September 27 at about 8:30 pm after police received information that they were allegedly negotiating the sale of a stolen solar street light at a scrap dump in New Artisan Market, Enugu.

According to the statement, operatives of the New Haven Police Division proceeded to the location and arrested the two suspects, recovering the solar street light.

The suspects reportedly confessed during interrogation to vandalising and stealing the street light earlier that day at Graceland Estate, Independence Layout, Enugu.

In a separate incident, police operatives attached to the Abakaliki Road Division arrested a 35-year-old man, Chukwudi Nwigbo, on September 24 at about 3:34 am over the alleged vandalism of road traffic signs.

Ndukwe said the suspect was arrested along Abakaliki Road, GRA, Enugu, following a distress alert from the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre.

He said Nwigbo and an accomplice, who escaped from the scene, were detected by the security surveillance system while allegedly removing road traffic signs.

Several vandalised road signs bearing different inscriptions were reportedly recovered from the suspect.

Similarly, on September 15, operatives of the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit, working with members of the Neighborhood Watch Group, arrested two men, identified as 31-year-old Zubairu Hamanpedimso and 21-year-old Mohamed Adamu.

The duo were arrested for allegedly conspiring to vandalise and steal materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation.

Police said a bag containing iron materials, bolts and nuts allegedly vandalised and stolen from the corporation was recovered from the suspects.

The command said all five suspects had been arraigned before a court and remanded in correctional custody pending further hearing.

Efforts, it added, were ongoing to apprehend other suspects allegedly involved in the various incidents.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the police operatives and members of the Neighborhood Watch Group for their prompt response, which led to the arrests and recovery of the allegedly stolen public assets.

Giwa also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information on activities capable of undermining public infrastructure and security in the state.
