The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other northern presidential aspirants to shelve their ambitions for the 2027 general elections and wait until 2031.

Akume argued that President Bola Tinubu, who hails from the South, should be allowed to complete two terms in office before power returns to the North.

According to a report by Leadership Newspapers, the SGF made the remarks while addressing Benue State indigenes residing in Kaduna, where he called on Northerners to remain united and avoid political activities that could weaken the region’s collective interests.

He described northern politicians seeking the presidency in 2027 as misleading the Arewa region, insisting that the North should prioritise long-term political calculations over individual ambitions.

Akume maintained that supporting Tinubu’s re-election bid would help preserve political stability and prevent divisions among northern stakeholders.

The former Benue State governor also cautioned political leaders against allowing personal interests, religious differences and other considerations to undermine the region’s unity.

He said Nigeria’s political history offered important lessons on the consequences of internal disagreements, urging northern leaders to avoid actions that could diminish their influence in national affairs.

Akume further stressed the need for cooperation among political stakeholders, arguing that a united North would be better positioned to protect its interests and contribute to national development.

Beyond partisan politics, the SGF called for national unity, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious communities.

He also highlighted the importance of preserving cultural identities and traditions, describing shared heritage as a vital instrument for strengthening relationships among communities.
