The Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State has been thrown into mourning following the death of Professor Kamene Okonjo, mother of World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and the kingdom’s traditional ruler, Obi (Dr) Ifechukwude Anishi Okonjo II.

The renowned sociologist and matriarch of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family died on Friday at the age of 96.

She was married to the late Obi (Professor) Chukwuka Okonjo, the immediate past traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku, for 66 years.

The royal family announced her death in a statement issued on Sunday by the Palace Secretary, Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, describing her as an exceptional woman whose life reflected intellectual excellence, humility, compassion and service to humanity.

According to the statement, the late professor earned international recognition for her contributions to sociology, academic scholarship and the advancement of women’s rights and empowerment.

“She was a woman of exceptional intellect, yet possessed a rare gentleness of spirit, humility and grace that endeared her to everyone privileged to know her,” the statement said.

The royal family noted that her influence extended beyond Ogwashi-Uku and Nigeria, earning her respect within international academic and intellectual circles.

It described her life as a testament to scholarship, womanhood, motherhood and selfless service to society.

Beyond her academic achievements, Professor Okonjo was celebrated as a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who played a significant role in the life of the royal family.

The statement said her wisdom, kindness, quiet strength and exemplary character would continue to inspire generations.

“While we mourn her passing, we celebrate a life exceptionally well lived,” the family added.

The royal family further noted that she had left behind an enduring legacy of scholarship, service, strong family values and advocacy for the dignity and advancement of women.

Drawing comfort from their Christian faith, the family expressed the belief that the deceased was resting peacefully with the Lord after a life marked by distinction and grace.

The family also extended its condolences to the reigning Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and the deceased’s children, including Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Dr Njideka Okonjo-Udochi, Prince Onyema Okonjo and Prince Chichi Okonjo, alongside their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other members of the Okonjo family.

The statement called on the people of Ogwashi-Uku to join the royal family in celebrating the life and achievements of the late professor.

It described her as a distinguished daughter of the kingdom whose contributions to scholarship and humanity would remain a lasting source of pride and inspiration.
