Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has strongly denounced the brutal killing of thirteen indigenes of his state who were attacked during a town union meeting in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The victims, who had gathered for their monthly meeting penultimate Monday, were reportedly murdered in cold bloodblood, a development the governor described as “barbaric” and a violation of peace and human dignity.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, Governor Nwifuru expressed deep sorrow over the incident and demanded urgent action from security agencies.
“We received with deep shock and utter dismay the tragic report of the recent gruesome killing of thirteen Ebonyi indigenes residing in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State,” the governor stated.
He decried the attack, branding it an inhumane act that must not go unpunished.
“This senseless act of violence against law-abiding citizens is not only barbaric, but a direct assault on peace, unity, and the sanctity of human life. It is unacceptable, and I frown strongly at such heinous acts in their entirety,” he declared.
In response, Governor Nwifuru has contacted the Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, urging him to prioritize a swift and transparent investigation into the killings.
He stressed the broader implications of inaction, noting that failure to apprehend the attackers could endanger the good relations between the two states.
“It defies logic and human decency that a peaceful town union meeting would be targeted in such a brutal manner. This kind of barbarism has no place in modern society, and we will deploy every legal and state instrument to unmask the perpetrators,” he vowed.
Reassuring the people of Ebonyi, Nwifuru affirmed his government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of its citizens, both within and outside the state.
He also appealed for calm among the victims’ families and their communities, urging them not to take the law into their own hands while the matter is being investigated.
While mourning the tragic loss, the governor emphasized the need for restraint.
He called on security operatives to act decisively and swiftly to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
