Residents of Agu Umabor, a farming community in Eha-Alumona, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, are raising alarm over worsening conditions of their only access road, now nearly impassable due to severe erosion and increasingly exploited by armed Fulani herdsmen for kidnappings.
It was gathered that the road, vital for transporting farm produce and accessing essential services, is deteriorating rapidly, threatening to cut off the community entirely. Locals, mostly subsistence farmers, say their lives and livelihoods are now in jeopardy.
The Agu Umabor Elites Group, speaking through a statement signed by its president, Mr. Abonyi Gilbert Emeka, and another member, Mr. Ugwuanyi Collins, pleaded for urgent intervention from Governor Peter Mbah and Nsukka LGA Chairman, Mr. Jude Asogwa.
“We are appealing to the Governor and the LGA Chairman to come to our aid and save our community from this impending disaster,”
“The road is not just a path to our community, it’s a lifeline that connects us to the rest of the world. Without it, our farmers will struggle to get their produce to market, and our people will be cut off from essential services.” he said
The group recalled that calls for assistance during the previous administration went unanswered, despite earlier signs of road degradation.
“Now, the situation has become critical, and we are counting on the current administration to come to our rescue,” Emeka added.
The worsening road condition has reportedly made Agu Umabor a hotspot for criminal activity, especially kidnappings by armed herdsmen who now exploit the isolated terrain.
“Fulani herdsmen are feasting from the road almost on daily basis,” Collins lamented.
“They stationed there to kidnap our people because the road is almost impassable. Now, 2027 election is drawing closer, the politicians will use that road as a campaign manifesto to elicit our support.”
