The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly dismissed recent allegations about the existence of a new terrorist organisation, the Fethulla Terrorist Organisation (FETO), operating in Nigeria.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations (DMO), Major-General Markus Kangye, refuted the claims, emphasizing Nigeria’s sovereignty in handling its national security affairs.

“Nigeria remains an independent nation,” Kangye asserted, “capable of making its own decisions, particularly on security and counter-terrorism matters.”

The dismissal follows remarks by Turkish Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, who claimed at an event marking Turkey’s Democracy and National Unity Day that FETO continues to operate in Nigeria under the guise of educational and healthcare institutions.

Kangye said “Information from the person you are talking about, as far as DHQ is concerned, is an unofficial announcement. Everybody is free to say whatever they want. There is freedom of information.”

He continued “Nigeria is an independent sovereign nation that can think and act for itself.”

While acknowledging Nigeria’s international partnerships, Kangye warned against giving weight to unverified claims from foreign sources:

“Nigeria could not be swayed by external commentary or claims that do not align with its own intelligence and national interest.”
