Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, has expelled 57 students for engaging in various forms of examination malpractice, the institution confirmed in a statement on Saturday.

The decision was ratified at the university’s 125th Regular Senate Meeting after thorough investigations carried out by the Central Examination Misconduct Committee, according to a statement signed by Hajiya Fatima Sanda, Head of Information and Protocol at UMYU.

Before reaching this outcome, the university committee reviewed reported cases across multiple faculties to ensure due process was followed, the statement said.

In addition to the expulsions, five other students were rusticated for two semesters (2024/2025 session), with all relevant examination papers cancelled.

The disciplinary measures did not end there. According to the release, two students were issued official written warnings, which have now been permanently recorded in their academic files.

UMYU reiterated that the actions were taken in line with the institution’s firm stance on academic integrity:

“UMYU remains committed to preserving the sanctity of its academic standards and will not hesitate to sanction any act that undermines the integrity of its examinations.”

The university also urged students to strictly comply with all academic rules and warned that any future violations would attract stiff penalties:

“Students have been urged to adhere strictly to academic rules and avoid any form of malpractice, as future violations will be met with equally strict consequences.”

In reinforcing its zero-tolerance policy, the management emphasized that the disciplinary steps are intended to serve as a deterrent to others.
