Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have been awarded national honours and substantial rewards following their historic win at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.
President Bola Tinubu hosted the team at the State House on Monday evening, where he announced the conferment of the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (OON) on each team member.
As part of the reward package, every player will also receive a cash prize of $100,000 and a flat.
The coaching and technical staff, led by Coach Rena Wakama, were not left out, they each received $50,000 in recognition of their contribution to the team’s success.
The recognition comes on the heels of D’Tigress clinching their fifth consecutive AfroBasket Women’s title and seventh overall, after defeating Mali 78–64 in a hard-fought final on Sunday.
Their continued dominance has cemented Nigeria’s place as a powerhouse in African women’s basketball.
This gesture mirrors a similar one made by President Tinubu just a week earlier, when he honoured the Super Falcons with national awards and gifts after they secured Nigeria’s 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.
