The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that there is currently no definitive court order barring the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.

However, the Force has opted to temporarily suspend enforcement of the law in light of public concern and in respect of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), pending a court hearing scheduled for October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.

Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, made the announcement via a statement issued on Thursday.

He noted that the decision follows a meeting between the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and the leadership of the NBA, led by its president, Afam Josiah Osigwe (SAN), at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

“The meeting focused on the ongoing enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act and provided a platform for open dialogue on the need for synergy between the legal and law enforcement communities,” Hundeyin stated.

While acknowledging that there is no existing legal injunction stopping the police from implementing the tinted glass law, the IGP emphasized the Force’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting public trust.

To that end, the police have inaugurated a joint committee comprising officers and NBA representatives to improve cooperation and ensure that enforcement of laws aligns with citizens’ rights and legal standards.

“In the meantime,” Hundeyin added, “motorists are encouraged to use this temporary pause to ensure their vehicle documentation is up-to-date and complies with regulations regarding the use of tinted or shaded glass.”

The IGP reaffirmed the Police Force’s dedication to fair and transparent law enforcement, vowing to respect citizens’ rights while maintaining strong partnerships with key stakeholders in the justice sector.
