A Magistrate Court sitting in Kuje, Abuja, has ordered the remand of Aloy Ejimakor, lawyer to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, along with Prince Emmanuel Kanu, Kanu’s younger brother, and 10 other individuals, following their involvement in a protest held on Monday.
The group had participated in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja, calling for the release of the pro-Biafra leader who remains in detention.
Kanuta Kanu, another of Nnamdi Kanu’s brothers, confirmed the court’s decision in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“The magistrate sitting in Kuje remanded Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case, and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, his youngest brother. This is a conspiracy from the executive, legislature, and judiciary to frustrate Kanu’s trial on Thursday.”
According to court documents shared online by Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, former Chair of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the group faces charges including Inciting public disturbance, breaching public peace and violating an existing court order.
The documents also allege that the protestors Blocked public roads and disrupted traffic, Chanted songs demanding Nnamdi Kanu’s release and Obstructed free movement in the city.
Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, had previously stated during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today that those arrested during the protest would be charged after investigations were concluded.
