Vice President Kashim Shettima represented the President at the ceremony held on Monday in Yenagoa, where Tinubu commended Diri for his leadership and commitment to development. “The All Progressives Congress is a party of those who believe in collective progress. Governor Douye Diri, your journey reflects that of your people. Politics should focus on development, not opposition,” Tinubu said. He added, “We are immensely proud of you. Your decision is the right one.” The President highlighted Diri’s record in Bayelsa, praising his efforts to improve infrastructure, expand road networks, build bridges, and bring electricity to underserved communities. Tinubu described Diri’s defection as “a homecoming to the progressive family,” emphasizing that the governor would now be part of a team that “thinks and acts together.” APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda also addressed the gathering, urging Diri to help consolidate the party’s presence in Bayelsa and deliver strong support for President Tinubu in the 2027 elections. The event was attended by a large crowd of APC supporters waving flags and chanting slogans. Top party figures present included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Governor Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Governor Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Governor Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom). Governor Diri’s switch to the APC marks a significant political shift in Bayelsa, historically a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He formally resigned from the PDP on October 15, 2025, following what he described as “extensive consultations.” The defection was supported by 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Abraham Ngobere. Diri’s move is part of a broader trend of defections from the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections. This year alone, the PDP has lost four sitting governors: Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), and Peter Mbah (Enugu).
