Nearly three weeks after the relocation of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to the Sokoto Correctional Centre, security around the facility has remained heavily fortified.

Kanu, who was convicted on all seven terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government, received a life sentence on November 20.

His transfer to Sokoto followed the court’s concerns over his safety at the Kuje Correctional Centre, which has experienced multiple security breaches in recent years.

During a visit to the prison along Marina Road on Friday, DAILY GAZETTE observed an Armoured Personnel Carrier positioned at the entrance, while armed operatives maintained strict surveillance around the perimeter.

Security personnel firmly barred journalists from accessing the facility, insisting that media clearance must come directly from the national corrections headquarters.

A security officer, who requested anonymity, disclosed that several Igbo groups had attempted to visit Kanu in recent days but were turned back.

“We can’t allow just anyone to visit him because it could compromise security,” the officer said.

“Only his family members, lawyers, and a few high-profile individuals are permitted. When the Abia State Governor visited last week with the Attorney-General, they were allowed limited access.”

He also warned against taking photographs near the prison, stressing that such actions could pose a security risk.
