Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a woman for allegedly selling her two-month-old baby for N1.5 million in the state.
The arrest was confirmed on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Bright Edafe, in a statement made available to journalists in Asaba.
Edafe said the suspect, identified as Ughale, had initially reported at the Ekpan Police Division on December 15 that her infant was snatched during a robbery attack while she was travelling in a commercial tricycle.
According to him, the Divisional Police Officer of Ekpan Division, CSP Labe Joseph, immediately mobilised operatives and launched a search-and-rescue operation following the report.
However, during the course of investigation, the police noticed contradictions in the woman’s account, coupled with suspicious behaviour, which led to further interrogation.
Edafe disclosed that the suspect later confessed to fabricating the robbery story and admitted that she had sold her baby to two individuals for N1.5 million.
He added that the suspects involved in the transaction were arrested, while the baby was successfully recovered and is currently safe.
“All suspects are presently in custody as investigations continue, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other accomplices connected to the crime for prosecution,” the police spokesperson stated.
