Former presidential candidate and NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has declared that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) will keep a close watch on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the party’s national convention in Abuja on Saturday, Kwankwaso stressed that INEC’s role is critical to the survival of Nigeria’s democracy.
The convention, which re-elected the party’s national executives, was attended by INEC representatives, party leaders, and delegates from across the country.
Kwankwaso congratulated the commission on the appointment of its new national chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, while emphasizing that public confidence in elections depends largely on the commission’s conduct.
“INEC’s job is so critical that it can make or break democracy in this country,” Kwankwaso said.
“We are keeping our eyes on the commission and look forward to a constructive relationship. We also assure that NNPP’s leadership at all levels will continue to strengthen the party and expand its reach.”
Kwankwaso urged party leaders to promote inclusiveness and fairness at all levels, ensuring that women and youths, who form the backbone of the population, are fully engaged, not just in words but in action.
He emphasized that no political party can succeed without unity, and that every member must feel valued to make the party resilient and strong.
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State described the convention as a turning point for the NNPP, warning against internal divisions that could weaken the party.
He praised the party’s grassroots structure and urged leaders to maintain inclusivity and fairness.
In his acceptance speech, the re-elected National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, highlighted lessons learned from the 2023 general elections and pledged to work harder ahead of 2027.
“All eyes are on NNPP to guide the path for sustainable democracy and development in Nigeria. We must live up to the expectations of Nigerians and restore genuine democracy,” he said.
Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Hon. Buba Galadima, emphasized the party’s reliance on grassroots support rather than political heavyweights.
“NNPP’s strength lies in the acceptance and dedication of our people at all levels,” he said, praising Kwankwaso for his continued leadership and dedication.
The newly re-elected NNPP executives include National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed; National Secretary, Dipo Olayoku; National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson; National Treasurer, Ahmed Balewa; National Financial Secretary, Chief Aneine Clement; and National Legal Adviser, Robert Hon, among others.
The convention ratified decisions of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and elected members of the National Working Committee (NWC), as the NNPP intensifies preparations for the 2027 elections following its strong showing in the 2023 polls, including winning the Kano State governorship.
