The Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (Northern CAN) has applauded Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for granting clemency to Sunday Jackson, a Christian farmer who had been sentenced to death following a violent attack on his farm.

Governor Fintiri’s pardon, issued on Tuesday, triggered spontaneous celebrations in Yola and across Adamawa State, with residents taking to the streets to welcome the development.

In a Christmas message signed by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, and Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, Northern CAN described Jackson’s initial conviction as a miscarriage of justice and said the governor’s intervention restored public confidence in fairness and the rule of law.

“The grant of clemency brings relief and affirms that self-defence in the face of mortal danger should not be criminalised, while terrorists and their sponsors remain at large in society,” the statement said.

While commending Governor Fintiri, Northern CAN urged Nigerian leaders to use the Christmas season as a period for national reflection, justice, and renewal, warning that the country cannot continue to suffer under terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.

The association also called on the Federal Government to conduct thorough investigations into the financiers and sponsors of violent crimes, stressing that lasting peace will remain elusive unless perpetrators are held accountable.

The statement further highlighted the moral significance of Christmas, describing it as “an opportunity for sober reflection on the nation’s conscience and social direction,” and commended faith-based organisations, community leaders, and individuals who have supported vulnerable citizens during the festive season.

On security matters, Northern CAN praised the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in protecting lives and property, while urging continued commitment until insecurity is decisively tackled.

The group welcomed the Federal Government’s recent designation of kidnappers, bandits, and other violent criminal groups as terrorists, saying it strengthens national security and demonstrates a firm commitment to addressing insecurity.

Northern CAN concluded by calling on leaders to uphold justice, equity, and the rule of law, and urged citizens to remain law-abiding, peaceful, and committed to national unity.

“As the nation celebrates Christmas, let us support our leaders, pray for the healing of our land, and work collectively for a safer, more just, and united Nigeria,” the association said.
