The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has directed the arrest of the owner of a two-storey building that collapsed in the Jikwoyi area of Abuja, while also ordering the seizure of the land.

Wike gave the directive on Tuesday during an inspection of the site, revealing that the structure was being developed into a hotel without the necessary building approval.

According to the minister, officials from the Development Control Department had earlier issued stop-work notices, which the developer allegedly ignored, continuing construction in violation of regulations.

He condemned the disregard for due process, stressing that the lack of approval and oversight contributed to the structural failure.

Despite the incident, he noted that no lives were lost.

Wike warned that the government would intensify enforcement against illegal developments, including demolishing structures erected without proper authorisation.

He added that the owner of the collapsed building would face arrest and prosecution.

The minister also stated that the land would be reclaimed by the government, with plans to consult the local community on a suitable public project to be developed on the site.

Emphasising the importance of compliance, Wike urged developers to obtain proper approvals, noting that regulatory agencies are responsible for monitoring construction standards and ensuring the use of quality materials.

He further directed relevant authorities to strengthen oversight and enforcement to prevent similar incidents, reiterating the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the Federal Capital Territory.
