At least 24 people have been reported killed following a violent attack on Debe village in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, according to the Catholic Diocese of Kontagora.

The incident, which occurred on Easter Sunday, is part of a growing wave of insecurity affecting border communities between Kebbi and neighbouring Niger State.

The Diocese stated that armed assailants stormed the village around 5 p.m. on April 5, unleashing hours of violence that left dozens dead and properties destroyed.

Contrary to earlier police figures that put the death toll at four, the Diocese insisted that 24 people lost their lives in the incident.

It emphasized that the victims included individuals from different religious backgrounds, describing the attack as a humanitarian tragedy rather than a targeted religious assault.

In addition to the killings, the attackers reportedly set fire to key structures in the community, including St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a mosque, homes, and shops. Most of the victims were said to be men and young people.

The violence also spread to nearby communities such as Gebe, Kawara, Kalkami, Binuwa, and Kalkame, where houses, markets, and even the emir’s residence were affected.

Many residents fled their homes amid the tribulations.

Security sources indicated that the attackers may have operated from the Wawa Forest in Niger State.

In response, authorities deployed security personnel, including military forces, police tactical teams, marine units, and local vigilantes, to restore order in the area.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation has worsened, with hundreds of displaced persons seeking refuge.

The Diocese reported that about 491 internally displaced individuals are currently sheltered at St. Dominic Parish in Yauri, where they urgently need food, water, medical care, and proper accommodation.

The Church has called on the Federal Government and Kebbi State authorities to take swift and decisive action to address the rising insecurity and ensure the safe return of displaced residents.

It also appealed to humanitarian agencies and the international community to provide immediate assistance and support long-term solutions to the crisis.

Residents across the affected areas are said to be living in fear, with many unable to bury their dead or rebuild their lives following the attacks.
