Gunmen have killed the traditional ruler of Ochia, Eze Paulinus Ekwueme, alongside some security operatives in a violent ambush in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

The attack reportedly occurred on Friday night at the boundary between Assa and Ochia communities, shortly after the monarch returned from an overseas trip earlier in the week.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers ambushed the convoy as it made its way to the community, opening fire and killing the monarch and some members of his security detail.

Some sources also alleged that the victims were set ablaze after the attack, though authorities have yet to confirm this detail.

A source familiar with the incident said the traditional ruler may have been trailed, suggesting that information about his movement could have been leaked prior to the attack.

The late monarch was said to have recently returned to Owerri before heading to his community when the incident occurred, triggering panic and mourning across the area.

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in Imo State, Henry Okoye, confirmed the killing, noting that the command had deployed tactical teams to the area to restore calm and begin investigations.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, had ordered intensified security operations aimed at tracking down those responsible for the attack.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators as security has been reinforced across the affected communities.
