South Carolina Governor, Henry McMaster, has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the younger sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, to temporarily occupy her brother’s vacant seat in the United States Senate following his death.

The appointment came just hours after President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Nordone for the role, describing the move as a fitting tribute to one of his closest political allies.

Announcing the decision on Monday, Governor McMaster said it was an honour to ask Nordone to complete the remainder of her brother’s term until it expires in January.

Accepting the appointment, Nordone paid an emotional tribute to her late brother, describing him as an exceptional leader, a devoted family man and an outstanding public servant.

Lindsey Graham, a veteran Republican senator and influential voice on foreign policy, died unexpectedly over the weekend at the age of 71.

The siblings shared a remarkable bond forged through personal tragedy.

After the death of their mother when Graham was 20 and Nordone was 12, their father died of a heart attack less than two years later.

At just 22 years old, Graham became the legal guardian of his 13-year-old sister, ensuring she completed her education while raising her as his own.

Nordone has previously recounted how her brother comforted her following their father’s death, promising he would always look after her, a promise he fulfilled throughout his life.

President Trump praised the appointment on Truth Social, calling it a “fabulous tribute” to the late senator, who remained one of the administration’s closest Republican allies and a respected figure in Washington.

Nordone’s appointment is expected to be temporary. South Carolina Republicans will conduct a special primary election on August 11 to nominate a candidate for the November election, with the eventual winner set to assume a full six-year Senate term beginning in January.
