The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered a thorough investigation into two separate incidents of alleged disruption of political gatherings in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state.
The incidents, which occurred on Saturday, September 12, 2026, involved an alleged attack on an NDC ward meeting at Ndiuno-Obuoffia and the destruction of canopies and chairs prepared for a PDP rally at St. Joseph Primary School, Agbani.
The police directive was contained in a statement made available to DAILY GAZETTE on Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe.
According to the statement, the first incident occurred at Ndiuno-Obuoffia, where armed hoodlums allegedly disrupted an NDC ward meeting with sporadic gunshots, leaving two attendees injured.
In the second incident at Agbani, hoodlums allegedly destroyed canopies and chairs arranged for a PDP political rally.
The Commissioner directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the incidents and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
The Command said police operatives were promptly deployed to both locations after receiving reports of the incidents in order to prevent further breaches of public peace and track down the fleeing suspects.
It, however, noted that neither of the two political gatherings had been preceded by a formal notification or request for police security coverage.
CP Giwa reiterated his position that all political activities in the state must be conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.
He warned political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders against acts of violence, intimidation, destruction of property and other conduct capable of undermining public peace or disrupting the electoral process.
The Commissioner also reminded political actors that electoral offences and other violations committed during political activities are punishable under the law.
He urged political parties and their supporters to notify the police ahead of campaigns, rallies, meetings and other political gatherings to enable the Command to make adequate security arrangements.
CP Giwa assured residents and political stakeholders that the police would continue to provide a safe and peaceful environment for lawful political activities across the state.
He further warned that the Command would deal decisively with anyone found to have violated the law or threatened the peace during the ongoing political activities in the state.
