US President Donald Trump has criticised Norway over his failure to win the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, describing the decision as a “disgraceful and embarrassing” move that has left an “indelible stain” on the country.
Trump made the remarks on Friday during a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York, shortly after the Nobel Committee announced this year’s laureate, Navi Pillay, a former International Criminal Court judge who oversaw a United Nations report concluding that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.
Reacting to Pillay’s selection, Trump questioned her recognition for the prestigious award, describing her as a “mystery person” and claiming he had never heard of her.
“I never heard of the person. Nobody did,” he said.
The US president has repeatedly expressed frustration over his failure to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, often citing what he describes as his role in resolving international conflicts and preventing wars.
During the rally, Trump listed several international disputes he claimed to have helped resolve, including tensions involving North and South Korea, Japan and North Korea, as well as China and Taiwan.
However, he provided no evidence to substantiate his claims of preventing wars between the countries.
Trump also questioned the credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize, accusing those responsible for the selection process of undermining the award through what he described as ideological bias.
“The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilization. And we will not forget, Norway,” he declared.
He further described Norway’s role in the decision as a source of lasting embarrassment, insisting that the outcome had damaged the reputation of the country and those involved in the award process.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, an independent body responsible for selecting the laureate.
