Eyes In The Sky, Safety On The Ground: How Gov. Mbah Is Reimagining Security In Enugu By Dr. Malachy Chuma Ochie

Enugu State has entered a new chapter in its security architecture, a chapter that is defined not by rhetoric but by decisive, technology-driven action.

Governor Peter Mbah’s recent deployment of hi-tech drones, patrol vans, and advanced surveillance equipment signals a bold escalation in the state’s fight against crime.

This is an evolution building steadily on earlier reforms already reshaping the security landscape.

For years, insecurity across Nigeria has demanded fresh thinking and modern solutions, and Enugu is now positioning itself boldly at the forefront of this shift.

The introduction of drones equipped with real-time monitoring capabilities represents a significant leap forward, allowing security agencies to track movements, identify threats, and respond swiftly before situations escalate.

In a terrain where criminals often exploit difficult landscapes and gaps in traditional policing methods, aerial intelligence offers a decisive edge.

Coupled with this is the rollout of new patrol vans and tactical vehicles, enhancing mobility and visibility across communities.

These assets strengthen rapid-response capacity and deepen the presence of law enforcement in both urban and rural areas.

By integrating technology with human capability, the government is creating a layered security network designed to deter criminals, reassure citizens, and promote economic activity in a safer environment.

This renewed investment is not a departure from previous efforts but a consolidation; a strategic scaling-up.

Since assuming office, Gov. Mbah has consistently emphasized peace and stability as the backbone of his administration’s transformation agenda.

The latest security equipment deployment is therefore a continuation of a security ecosystem anchored on innovation, preparedness, and collaboration with conventional and non-conventional security actors.

As Enugu’s skies now hum with surveillance capability and its roads buzz with modern patrol assets, the message is clear: the state is matching intention with action.

What emerges is a growing sense of confidence among residents and investors that Enugu is not only reclaiming its peace but redefining what effective, modern governance can look like.

In an era where safety is synonymous with development, Enugu is raising the bar and setting an example worthy of national attention.

Fresh Crisis: Fubara In Hot Soup As Rivers Assembly Reads Riot Act To The Governor

A potential governance crisis is emerging in Rivers State as the House of Assembly voices growing concern over Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s continued delay in submitting names of commissioner nominees for screening.

Lawmakers raised the issue during Friday’s plenary session, highlighting the urgency for functional leadership across key ministries.

Following the suspension of emergency rule in September 2025, the Assembly had previously urged the governor to present a list of commissioner nominees to ensure effective administration.

Since the political crisis, Fubara has dismissed all commissioners appointed during the period, citing their lack of approval by the constitutionally recognized Assembly, as affirmed by a Supreme Court ruling.

However, he retained previously screened and approved commissioners, with some reassigned to other ministries.

Currently, several critical ministries, including Education and Communication, operate without appointed commissioners, leaving permanent secretaries to manage essential functions.

The governor has yet to provide any explanation for the delay.

The Assembly has adjourned plenary to Monday, January 26, 2026, signaling possible delays in the presentation of the 2026 budget, originally expected in December 2025.

Recent developments suggest that the fragile peace between Governor Fubara and the House may be unraveling.

The Speaker of the House, Hon. Ikuinyi O. Amaewhule, criticized the deteriorating state of public schools, blaming the governor for neglecting the sector despite repeated warnings from the Assembly.

He described the situation as “a sad commentary” on the state of education in Rivers, calling for urgent intervention.

Amaewhule highlighted the severe shortage of teachers in public schools and accused the government of abandoning the 10,000-job recruitment initiative started under the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike.

“When it is time for protest, funds are available, but when it is time to employ teachers, there is nothing,” he lamented.

He added, “How can anyone believe that in 2025, a teacher will manage two classrooms under one roof?” He stressed that the House would not allow such indifference to continue.

The Speaker also raised questions about the alleged over N600 billion left in state coffers by the former Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, questioning why these funds have not been deployed to improve public education.

In response, Governor Fubara stated that employment in the state would be based on actual needs rather than political considerations.

During a meeting with the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council on Monday, he noted that the public school system was already in poor condition before he took office and assured that the 2026 budget would prioritize education.

Fubara further approved the formal employment of 1,000 teachers who completed the recruitment process in 2023 but had yet to receive appointment letters.

However, he did not comment on the status of funds reportedly left by Ibas.

Imo Woman Arrested For Torturing Maid With Candle Wax, Burning Private Part

The Imo State Police Command has arrested 38-year-old businesswoman Juliet Igwe for allegedly inflicting severe injuries on her six-year-old female maid, Onyinyechi, using candlelight.

Apart from targeting the minor’s private parts, Igwe reportedly poured hot water on the child’s hands and used candle wax to burn her body.

Parading the suspect at the Command headquarters in Owerri, the State Police Spokesperson, Henry Okoye, said the arrest followed intelligence received by operatives of the Ideato North Police Divisional Headquarters.

Okoye also commended Stand for Human Rights Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by activist journalist Chidiebube Okeoma, for alerting the police and assisting in the suspect’s arrest.

Describing the act as “despicable and totally unacceptable,” Okoye disclosed that Igwe would face court proceedings once investigations are concluded.

He added that the State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, is unhappy with the incident and has directed the Deputy Commissioner in charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department to thoroughly investigate and charge the suspect to court.

When interviewed, Igwe admitted responsibility for her actions, telling journalists:

“I didn’t know that the use of candle wax and boiled water on the girl was going to cause grievous harm to her.”

She accused the child of stealing meat from her pot and claimed:

“I only battered her so as to forestall future reoccurrence.”

Commenting on the incident, Okeoma revealed that his foundation reported the child abuse in Uruala Community, Ideato North LGA, to the police.

He said his organization not only rescued the child but also assisted in arresting the suspect.

“This wickedness is not tolerated in a sane society like ours and should be condemned.
We have taken over the medical and welfare packages of the minor.”

“We have taken her to the Imo State University Medical Centre in Owerri for proper medical investigations and treatments.

“We thank the Executive Secretary of the State Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Uche Ewelike, for expressively approving complete free medical care for the minor, owing to the urgency of her condition.

“Also, we thank the Commissioner of Police for immediately ordering the transfer of the matter to the State CID in Owerri for speedy investigation,” Okeoma said.

OAU Removed My Name From Convocation List For Protesting Against Wike, Final-Year Student Alleges

Joshua Temitope Oladepo, a final-year student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has alleged that the university deliberately removed his name from the 2025 graduation list as punishment for participating in a protest against former FCT Minister Nyesom Wike during his visit to the campus on June 5, 2025.

Oladepo told newsmen that when he tried to log into the university’s convocation portal on Thursday evening, he was shocked to find that his name had been omitted from the list of graduating students.

“I was one of the students arrested and detained when Wike came to our campus and we resisted. That was on June 5th, 2025,” he said.

He added, “This evening, I tried to log into my convocation portal but I was told that my name has been excluded from the graduation list. This wasn’t so initially.”

“As a matter of fact, I was able to make payments for the convocation, the sum of N40,000. This act can be linked to our resistance against the coming of Wike.”

A screenshot from the OAU Convocation Portal, reviewed by DAILY GAZETTE, displayed the message: “Your name is not yet on the 2025 Convocation list. Please send email to exams_records@oauife.edu.ng or visit the Exams and Records Office.”

Documents also confirm that Oladepo successfully paid his convocation fee.

His Remita payment receipt shows a transaction of N40,000 made on Sunday, November 23, 2025, with RRR: 171379218766.

Further findings indicate that OAU had issued Oladepo an official Notification of Results dated October 3, 2025.

The document, signed by Y.O. Akinyele (Mrs.), Deputy Registrar of the Examinations and Records Division, certified that he had completed his academic programme in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences.

“This is to certify that OLADEPO Joshua Temitope was a student in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria.”

“The candidate successfully completed an academic programme and was awarded the degree of B.Sc Political Science with the grade of Second Class Honours (Upper Division), as approved by the University Senate, on 18th September, 2025.”

“His/Her certificate is being prepared and will soon be ready for collection. Please extend to the candidate all assistance that the holder of a degree certificate may require,” the Deputy Registrar stated.

She added, “We hope you find this information sufficient for you to make a decision on the candidate’s application. However, if you require additional information regarding his/her academic records in the University, or have questions and/or concerns, please contact the Registrar using the following email address: registramosulfe.edu.ng.”

Despite having a verified result and completing all clearance steps, Oladepo maintains that his sudden exclusion from the convocation list is a coordinated retaliation against students who opposed Wike’s visit earlier this year.

The protest had led to multiple arrests, including his own.

2027 Presidency: Only Party NEC Can Decide Whether We Are Adopting Tinubu Or Not, Says APGA Chair

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Sylvester Ezeokenwa, has clarified that only the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has the authority to decide whether President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be formally adopted for the 2027 elections.

Earlier this year, during a visit to Anambra State, Governor Charles Soludo, APGA’s sole elected governor, reiterated the party’s longstanding policy of supporting the party controlling the federal government.

Soludo reaffirmed his support for Tinubu, citing their 22-year friendship and the administration’s economic reforms as reasons for his backing.

Despite speculation about opposition governors, mainly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), endorsing Tinubu or defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ezeokenwa emphasized that any formal adoption for 2027 would be a collective NEC decision.

“Adopting the president is a decision that the NEC of the party will make at the appropriate time. For now, we support the president to continue his mandate to the people of Nigeria,” Ezeokenwa said.

The APGA chairman also dismissed rumors that Governor Soludo might defect to the APC, asserting that the governor remains firmly committed to APGA.

He noted that Soludo’s working relationship with President Tinubu is closer than that of many governors within his own party.

“In APGA, we are progressives, and the president is also a progressive. Both leaders have collaborated effectively, and Governor Soludo remains loyal to the party under which he was elected,” Ezeokenwa added.

APGA Woos Governor Otti Back To Its Fold As Talks Reach Advanced Stage

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Sylvester Ezeokenwa, has dismissed speculation that Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo might defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), despite his close friendship with President Bola Tinubu and advocacy for progressives working together.

Ezeokenwa told journalists in Abuja that it makes little sense for parties with similar ideological leanings to be in conflict at the polls.

He noted that Soludo’s recent landslide victory in the gubernatorial election solidifies APGA’s control in Anambra State, and the governor will remain in the party to continue supporting APC where appropriate.

Highlighting Soludo’s performance at the polls, Ezeokenwa said the governor secured 77% of votes, winning in 319 out of 326 wards, a record surpassing that of previous APGA governors in the state.

He described the result as an “A” for Soludo, reflecting both his popularity and APGA’s dominance in the region.

The APGA chairman also praised President Tinubu for supporting the idea of state policing, saying it enables governors to truly act as chief security officers in their states.

Responding to questions about Abia State Governor Alex Chioma Otti potentially joining APGA for his second-term election, Ezeokenwa welcomed him, describing such a move as a “homecoming” rather than a defection.

He stressed that while APGA remains open to new members, the party will ensure ideological alignment and will not become a vehicle for opportunistic political migrations.

LG Funds: Judges Divided As Supreme Court Delivers Split Ruling On Osun’s Suit Against FG

The Supreme Court on Friday delivered a divided judgment in the case instituted by the Osun State Attorney General against the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), challenging the Federal Government’s alleged unlawful seizure of funds meant for local government councils.

In a majority decision of six to one, the court struck out the suit, ruling that the Osun Attorney General lacked the legal standing to file the action on behalf of the state’s 30 local government councils.

According to the apex court, only constitutionally elected and sworn-in local government officials have the legal right to institute or defend actions relating to their administration and finances.

Despite dismissing the suit, the Supreme Court declared that the Federal Government’s withholding of local government allocations was unconstitutional, describing it as a “grave violation” of the 1999 Constitution and of the court’s earlier pronouncements affirming financial autonomy for local councils.

Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Mohammed Idris held that the Federal Government had acted improperly and urged immediate compliance with constitutional provisions mandating the direct release of funds to local government accounts.

He also dismissed the contempt allegations raised by the AGF against Osun State, insisting that it was, in fact, the Federal Government that stood in violation of the Constitution by refusing to disburse the funds.

Justice Idris further pointed out that there was no documentation showing that Osun’s Attorney General had been explicitly authorised by the local councils to initiate the suit.

In a lone dissent, Justice Emmanuel Agim argued that the Osun Attorney General had the right to bring the matter before the court.

He criticised the Federal Government’s withholding of funds, warning that such conduct risks undermining local governance across the country.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria Musibau Adetunbi, counsel to the Osun Attorney General, represented the state throughout the proceedings.

Pensioners Threaten Nationwide Naked Protest Over Unpaid Arrears

The Coalition of Federal Pensioners of Nigeria has announced plans for a nationwide naked protest to demand the payment of outstanding pension increment arrears and palliative allowances owed to its members.

In a statement issued on Friday in Lagos, the coalition’s National Chairman, Mr. Mukaila Ogunbote, who also leads the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NIPOST Chapter, said the demonstration is scheduled for December 8, unless the Federal Government pays the arrears beforehand.

According to Ogunbote, pensioners are demanding the settlement of the N32,000 pension increment and the N25,000 palliative allowance approved in 2023.

“The Federal Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General are not taking us seriously. All pensioners must come out en masse to resist this injustice,” he stated.

He said the protest will be held simultaneously in Abuja, Lagos, and across all states.

The demonstrations will take place at the offices of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) and in front of Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) stations nationwide.

Ogunbote urged all affiliated organisations to mobilise their members, stressing that the protest will continue until payments are made.

“We must show the wound our clothes are covering,” he declared.

“This protest will go on until we receive alerts for the N32,000 increment and the N25,000 for six months. Those who cannot return home the same day should come with mats. All pensioners must come out and fight for their rights.”

Trump Facilitates Peace Deal Between DR Congo And Rwanda In Washington

U.S President Donald Trump has successfully brokered a peace agreement between Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, marking a major diplomatic breakthrough aimed at ending over 30 years of violence in eastern DR Congo.

The accord was signed in Washington at the Peace Institute, recently renamed the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.

The agreement seeks to halt decades of conflict in the mineral-rich eastern region, where competition over strategic resources has long fueled unrest and drawn in both regional and international actors.

Trump announced that the United States would soon seal bilateral deals with both countries on rare earth mineral extraction.

He added that top U.S. companies would be deployed to the region, promising economic benefits for “everybody.”

Eastern Congo’s vast deposits of critical minerals have historically attracted the involvement of armed groups and foreign interests.

Analysts had predicted that any successful peace effort would likely align with Washington’s strategic economic priorities, especially regarding access to rare earths.

President Kagame noted that several attempts to resolve the conflict had failed over the years, but Trump managed to bring both leaders to the table.

Congolese President Tshisekedi described the agreement as the beginning of a challenging but necessary path toward lasting peace.

Although both leaders attended the ceremony, they exchanged only brief gestures and did not shake hands.

The accord builds on an earlier framework reached months ago, with both nations committing to respect each other’s territorial sovereignty, halt aggression, and stop supporting armed groups.

Despite the milestone, regional experts caution that the agreement may not, on its own, bring an end to the long-running conflict.

They point to ongoing talks in Doha involving representatives of the Rwanda-backed M23 militia, which earlier this year captured the major cities of Goma and Bukavu in the Kivu region and established its own administrative structures.

TikTok Moves To Block All Under-16 Users In A Bid To Curb Social Media Nuisance

TikTok has confirmed it will comply with Australia’s new law banning anyone under 16 from joining social media platforms, acknowledging that the upcoming changes “may be upsetting” for young users.

The legislation, the first of its kind globally, takes effect on December 10, and targets platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

Companies that fail to follow the rules could face penalties of up to Aus$49.5 million (US$32 million).

In a statement on Friday, TikTok said it will block under-16 users in Australia the moment the law comes into force.

This means minors will no longer be able to create or maintain accounts.

Existing accounts belonging to under-16s will be deactivated, and previously posted content will become inaccessible to the public.

Affected teens will be able to appeal the block by proving their age through methods such as submitting a facial image, providing official identification, or using credit card verification.

“We understand that these changes may be upsetting, but they are necessary to ensure that TikTok complies with Australian law,” the platform said.

Under the new rules, young users can either verify their age, download their account data, delete their profile, or request a reminder to restore their account once they turn 16.

TikTok also encouraged parents to discuss the importance of providing accurate age information with their children.

Australia’s Communications Minister, Anika Wells, defended the law, revealing that some teenagers had taken their own lives after harmful content found its way into their feeds.

“This specific law will not fix every harm occurring on the internet, but it will make it easier for kids to chase a better version of themselves,” she said.

However, the measure faces pushback. The Digital Freedom Project has filed a High Court challenge, arguing that the restrictions amount to an unfair attack on free speech.

Australia’s move has drawn global attention, with other countries exploring similar steps.

Malaysia has signaled plans to roll out an under-16 restriction next year, while New Zealand is preparing to introduce the same policy.
