Police Nab 20-Year-Old For Stabbing Brother To Death In His Sleep

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly stabbing his younger brother to death while he slept in Ogwashi-Uku, even as operatives dismantled a motorcycle-snatching syndicate operating within Agbor and surrounding communities.

The Command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed the development on Sunday, stating that the tragic incident occurred in the early hours of January 8, 2025, along Poly Road near Adaigbo Filling Station, Ogwashi-Uku.

Edafe said the police received a distress call at about 7:31 am., reporting that a young man had been stabbed to death around 3:20 a.m. while asleep.

According to him, the Divisional Police Officer of the Ogwashi-Uku Division, CSP Israel Okoyomon, immediately deployed detectives to the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was allegedly attacked by his elder brother, identified as Aliyu Haman, also aged 20.

The suspect was promptly arrested, while the weapon allegedly used in committing the crime was recovered.

The body of the deceased was evacuated and deposited at the Odua Mortuary in Ogwashi-Uku for autopsy, as investigations continue to determine the motive behind the killing.

The incident has shocked residents of the area and renewed concerns over domestic violence and youth-related crimes in the state.

In a related development, the Police Command announced the arrest of two suspected armed robbers involved in motorcycle snatching in Agbor as part of sustained intelligence-led operations against violent crime.

Edafe said the arrests followed discreet investigations into a reported armed robbery incident that occurred on December 24, 2025.

Acting on credible intelligence, operatives led by the DPO of Agbor Division, CSP Michael Obekpa, carried out a targeted operation on January 4, 2026, at about 10:45 pm.

Two suspects, identified as Owakwe Chuks, 37, and Bright Moses, 32, were arrested during the operation.

They are alleged to be members of a gang that specialised in snatching motorcycles from unsuspecting members of the public within Agbor and neighbouring communities.

Items recovered from the suspects include a hammer allegedly used to assault victims, a short knife, a brown face mask, a face cap, and a mobile phone.

Reacting to the developments, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, reiterated that the protection of lives and property remains the Command’s top priority.

He assured residents that the police would continue to tackle criminal activities through intelligence-driven operations, sustained patrols, and visible policing.

The Police Command also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information as investigations into the cases continue.

Why We Released 70 Suspected Bandits From Custody – Katsina govt

The Katsina State Government has defended its decision to initiate the release of 70 persons suspected to be involved in banditry-related offences, describing the move as part of efforts to sustain an ongoing peace agreement with repentant bandits across the state.

The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasir Muazu, disclosed this during an interview with DCL Hausa, saying the action was aimed at consolidating peace in communities affected by insecurity.

According to Muazu, the peace accord entered into by at least 15 local government areas has already yielded significant results, including the release of about 1,000 abducted persons by repentant bandits.

He likened the release of the suspects to prisoner exchanges commonly witnessed during and after armed conflicts, noting that such arrangements are not new in peace-building processes.

The explanation follows public outrage triggered by a leaked official letter dated January 2, 2026, which indicated that the state government had taken steps to secure the release of the suspects from custody.

The letter, classified as “Secret” and issued by the Katsina State Ministry of Justice, was addressed to the Chief Judge of the state.

It requested the intervention of the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) to facilitate the release of the detained suspects.

Signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Abdur-Rahman Umar, Esq, the letter revealed that a list of 48 suspects facing various banditry-related charges had been forwarded to the Ministry of Justice by the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs.

The ministry explained that the proposed release was a condition precedent for the continuation of the peace agreement reached between frontline local governments and bandit groups.

It further disclosed that while some of the suspects had already been arraigned before the Federal High Court, the majority were still awaiting trial at various Magistrate Courts across the state.

In addition, a separate list of 22 inmates standing trial before different High Courts was reportedly submitted for possible release under the same peace arrangement.

The Ministry of Justice urged the Chief Judge to take necessary action, stating that the request fell within the statutory powers of the Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee under Section 371(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Katsina State, 2021.

However, the move has generated widespread criticism, with many Nigerians warning that releasing suspects accused of serious crimes such as banditry could undermine the rule of law, deny victims justice, and embolden criminal groups.

Responding to the concerns, Muazu said the peace deal had already led to the release of abductees across several local government areas, including Safana, Kurfi, Sabuwa, Faskari, Danmusa, Malumfashi, Musawa, Matazu, Dutsinma, Jibia, and Bakori.

He insisted that prisoner exchange remains a recognised global practice, citing Nigeria’s civil war and past negotiations involving Boko Haram as examples where detained fighters were released as part of peace agreements.

Muazu maintained that the actions of the Ministry of Justice and the judiciary did not violate any existing laws, adding that anyone dissatisfied with the process was free to seek redress through the courts.

Enugu Police Recover Two Stolen Vehicles, Arrest Six Suspects

The Enugu State Police Command has recorded fresh operational successes in its ongoing fight against vehicle theft and related criminal activities across the state.

In two separate operations carried out in early January 2026, police operatives arrested six male suspects and recovered two vehicles reported stolen in Enugu and Lagos.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe.

According to the statement, operatives attached to the New Haven Police Division, acting on credible intelligence, recovered a stolen Mitsubishi L300 bus on January 8, 2026, at about 12:30 pm.

The vehicle was found within the Ogui area of Enugu metropolis.

The bus had earlier been reported stolen from where it was parked in New Haven on December 31, 2025.

Four suspects were arrested in connection with the theft. They were identified as Hassan Sheyu (29), Bashiru Yusuf (37), Alago Yusuf (30), and Idris Abisolamu (28).

Also arrested was a suspected receiver of stolen property, Nwanneka Isiugwu (male), who reportedly confessed to purchasing the stolen vehicle from the suspects for the sum of ₦1.7 million.

In a related development, operatives of the Udenu Police Division, acting on a tip-off and with the assistance of members of the public, arrested one Friday Onuh (27) at Obollo-Afor in Udenu Local Government Area on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at about 9:00 p.m.

A Toyota Camry 2.4 suspected to be stolen was recovered from the suspect.

Police investigations revealed that Onuh, a mechanic, was entrusted with the vehicle for repairs by its owner in Victoria Island, Lagos, but allegedly absconded with it.

The vehicle owner later confirmed the theft, stating that all previous efforts to locate the suspect and recover the car had been unsuccessful before police intervention.

The police said all suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects currently at large.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa has reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property in Enugu State.

He urged vehicle owners to adopt proactive security measures, including the installation of tracking devices, steering and pedal locks, and other anti-theft mechanisms.

The police also advised members of the public to exercise caution and due diligence when entrusting their vehicles to mechanics or other service providers.

You Didn’t Buy Ingredients, Now Food Is Ready, You Want To Take Charge, Wike Tells Defecting Politicians

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised politicians who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, insisting they lack the moral authority to assume leadership roles within structures they did not help build.
Wike spoke on Saturday during a “Thank You” visit to Phalga Local Government Area, where he also urged residents to sustain their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

He faulted the influx of former political opponents into the APC, arguing that their late entry does not entitle them to dictate the party’s direction.

Using a culinary metaphor, Wike said those who were absent at the formative stage of the political struggle cannot suddenly seek control now that the groundwork has been laid.

“You were not there from the beginning. You didn’t buy the pepper, salt or oil. Now that the food is ready, you want to take charge. Is that how it works?” he asked.

The former Rivers State governor emphasised that his support for Tinubu was deliberate and rooted in conviction, noting that he and his allies backed the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda from the outset of the 2023 election cycle.

“We led the struggle here in 2023. From the very beginning, we aligned with the Renewed Hope family and stood firmly by President Tinubu,” Wike said.

Drawing from his political experience, Wike recalled a legal dispute from 1999, which he said underscored the importance of participation from the start in any political process.

He further dismissed suggestions that recent defections could weaken his political influence in Rivers State, maintaining that his camp remains firmly in control.

“Nobody can push us out of this state. We have stayed the course since 2023, despite intimidation and threats,” he declared.

The remarks come amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State following Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC and the commencement of impeachment proceedings against him by the State House of Assembly over delays in presenting the 2026 budget.

Wike has openly opposed Fubara’s re-election bid and accused the governor of breaching a peace agreement reached prior to the lifting of emergency rule in the state.

‘Friend Of A Thief Is A Thief’, Defence Minister Warns Terrorist Sponsors, Bandits

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has warned Nigerians against providing any form of support to terrorists, insurgents, bandits, or criminal networks, stressing that collaborators will face the same fate as those they aid.

General Musa gave the warning on Saturday while speaking as Special Guest of Honour at the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day 2026 Golf Tournament held at the TYB Golf Resort and Country Club, Yar’Adua Barracks, Abuja.

He called on citizens to actively support the Armed Forces and other security agencies in the ongoing fight against insecurity, noting that national peace and stability require collective responsibility.

According to him, the Federal Government has given security agencies a firm mandate to decisively confront threats to national security, adding that individuals who shield or assist criminals will not be spared.

“As the saying goes, the friend of a thief is a thief,” Musa said.

“Anyone found aiding bandits, insurgents, or terrorists should desist immediately. If you align yourself with them, you will face the same consequences. Nigerians must provide useful information to security agencies to help protect lives and property.”

The Defence Minister explained that Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves to honour fallen heroes while recognising the sacrifices of serving personnel and their families.

He added that the celebration also reassures officers on active duty of national appreciation and government commitment, pointing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s focus on improving the welfare and operational capacity of the Armed Forces.

In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, said the President has issued clear directives to the military to sustain peace and security across the country.

Oluyede urged Nigerians to promptly report suspicious activities, stressing that early intelligence can prevent attacks and save lives.

“Security is everybody’s business. When you see something, say something. The Armed Forces are always ready to respond, but timely information is critical,” he said.

Also speaking, Brigadier General Nichols Ashinze, Captain of the TYB Golf Club, said the golf tournament was part of activities lined up for the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

He disclosed that more than 100 golfers were participating in the event, describing the inclusion of the golfing community as a symbolic gesture of solidarity and appreciation for the Armed Forces and their sacrifices.

2027: Anioma Group Endorses Okowa For Senate, Cites Record Of Service

A sociopolitical group, Agugu Anioma (Odi Anyi Mma), has endorsed former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, for a return to the Senate, citing his track record in public service, integrity, and commitment to the development of Anioma land.

The group said the endorsement followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the region, including traditional rulers, artisans, and youth groups.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the group’s Director of Publicity, Solomon Ebinum, the Convener, Louis Ndukwe, described Okowa as the most suitable candidate for the senatorial seat, pointing to what he called his exemplary performance both as a former senator and as governor of Delta State.

According to the group, Okowa demonstrated uncommon leadership qualities during his time in office, prioritising people-centred policies and sustainable development initiatives that positively impacted the lives of residents.

Ndukwe said the group had resolved to mobilise massive grassroots support for the former governor ahead of the election.

“We will move from door to door, unit to unit, ward to ward, and local government to local government to ensure a decisive victory,” he said.

He stressed that Okowa remains deeply connected to Anioma, noting that his values, vision, and political philosophy are rooted in the aspirations of the people.

“This endorsement is not based on sentiment but on substance,” Ndukwe added.

“Senator Okowa understands Anioma, believes in Anioma, and has consistently defended the interests of Anioma people. Returning him to the Senate will guarantee strong representation and effective advocacy at the national level.”

The group expressed confidence that Okowa’s experience and leadership would once again translate into tangible benefits for the Anioma region if elected.

Fresh Protests Rock Iran As Rights Groups Warn Of Deadly Crackdown

Fresh protests have erupted across Iran despite a nationwide internet shutdown, as rights groups warn that security forces are carrying out a deadly crackdown on demonstrators.

The latest demonstrations broke out overnight in several cities, including Tehran and Mashhad, with videos circulating on social media showing crowds on the streets and vehicles set ablaze.

The protests persisted even as authorities cut off internet access, severely restricting communication with the outside world.

What began as public anger over the rising cost of living has evolved into a broader challenge to Iran’s clerical leadership, which has ruled the country since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The unrest, now in its second week, represents one of the most serious tests to the authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in years, coming shortly after a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel in June, backed by the United States.

Internet monitoring group Netblocks said the blackout had exceeded 60 hours, warning that the censorship posed a serious threat to public safety at a critical moment in the country’s history.

Despite the shutdown, unverified videos emerged online allegedly showing families identifying the bodies of slain protesters in a Tehran morgue.

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said it had confirmed at least 116 deaths linked to the protests, including 37 members of security forces.

However, rights groups cautioned that the true number of casualties could be far higher due to limited access to information.

The Center for Human Rights in Iran said it had received eyewitness accounts and credible reports suggesting that hundreds of protesters may have been killed during the crackdown.

The group warned that hospitals were overwhelmed, blood supplies were dwindling, and that security forces were deliberately targeting protesters’ eyes.

Iranian authorities, however, have defended their actions. Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni told state television that incidents of vandalism were declining, accusing protest leaders of driving violence and chaos.

Police chief Ahmad-Reza Radan said “significant” arrests had been made, though no details were provided.

Iran’s security chief, Ali Larijani, distinguished between protests driven by economic hardship and what he described as riots, accusing some demonstrators of employing tactics similar to those used by terrorist groups.

In Tehran, the impact of the unrest has been profound.

An AFP journalist described a city operating at near standstill, with shops closing early as security forces deploy in large numbers.

Prices of basic goods, including meat, have surged sharply since the protests began.

Exiled former crown prince Reza Pahlavi urged Iranians to remain on the streets, pledging solidarity with demonstrators and calling for further action.

International tensions have also escalated. US President Donald Trump voiced support for the protests and warned Iranian authorities against killing civilians.

In response, Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf threatened retaliation against US military targets and what he described as occupied territories, referring to Israel.

As the unrest continues, fears are mounting that the violence could deepen, with rights groups urging the international community to act swiftly to prevent further loss of life.

Nigeria In Peril, Needs Collective Action For Salvation – Tambuwal

Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s current trajectory, warning that the country is facing a grave crisis that requires collective action to overcome.

Tambuwal made the remarks on Saturday while speaking at a colloquium organised to mark his 60th birthday.

He said Nigeria’s present state reflects a troubling departure from the ideals, vision and sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers, stressing that sincere leadership, responsible governance and national unity are essential for recovery.

According to him, meaningful progress can only be achieved when Nigerians collectively acknowledge that the country’s governance structure and political practices are fundamentally flawed.

“We must first agree that something is seriously wrong with how Nigeria is being governed today,” Tambuwal said.

“Only then can we begin the difficult task of working together to rescue the country. Nigeria is in peril, and salvation can only come through a collective effort.”

The event drew a broad spectrum of political leaders and public figures from across the country.

Among those in attendance were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, and the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah.

Also present were former Speakers of the House of Representatives, Patricia Etteh and Yakubu Dogara; Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe; Minister of Housing Ahmed Musa Dangiwa; and former governors Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Masari, Udom Emmanuel, Ibikunle Amosun and Gbenga Daniel.

Others included former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola.

Speaking virtually, former President Goodluck Jonathan acknowledged that his administration had disagreements with the House of Representatives during Tambuwal’s tenure as Speaker but praised his leadership capacity.

“When he was Speaker and I was President, we had our differences,” Jonathan said.

“But one thing is clear: the members of the House trusted him, and he was able to keep the institution united.”

Former Senate President David Mark also commended Tambuwal’s leadership qualities and wished him success in his future political endeavours.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who reportedly cut short a vacation abroad to attend the event, described Tambuwal as a promising national figure and urged him to continue to live up to the expectations placed on him.

Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole equally praised Tambuwal’s ability to manage a politically divided House of Representatives and recalled his personal support following the death of his wife.

ADC Alerts Public Against Fake Online Membership Registration Links

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned Nigerians, party members, and supporters to be cautious of fraudulent online links, websites, and social media accounts falsely claiming to offer the party’s official membership registration.

The party clarified that no official ADC membership registration platform is currently open, urging the public to disregard any circulating links.

The warning was issued in a statement shared on X by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Sunday.

“At this time, ADC has not launched any public online membership registration platform. The party is working on an official registration and verification system, which will be formally announced through verified party channels in due course,” the statement read.

The party also cautioned that it would never request payments or sensitive personal information through unofficial links, WhatsApp messages, direct messages, or third-party websites.

Abdullahi advised the public:
“Do not click on suspicious or unverified links. Do not share unconfirmed registration messages. Do not submit personal information, including your name, phone number, PVC details, BVN, or payment details, to any unverified platform. Report any suspicious links through official ADC communication channels.”

The ADC affirmed that all legitimate announcements, including the launch of its official membership registration system, will only be communicated through verified party platforms and formal statements from the leadership.

The alert comes amid recurring online scams targeting the party, especially as it prepares for the 2027 elections.

In July 2025, ADC disowned a fake list of state chairmen and cautioned against unauthorised online registration platforms designed to defraud Nigerians.

Abdullahi reiterated that such schemes are attempts to swindle unsuspecting individuals and advised verification through credible party sources, including his own official account.

Four Killed As Bandits Wreak Havoc In Niger Village

Bandits have killed at least four people in Damala village, located in the Woko district of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday, January 10, just a week after gunmen killed 42 residents across several communities in Borgu and neighbouring Agwara LGAs.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident to Channels Television on Sunday.

Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun, said the attackers stormed the village, rustled an unspecified number of cattle, killed four residents, and set several shops ablaze before fleeing the scene.

Security forces promptly responded to the raid, Abiodun added, with a clearance operation currently ongoing.

Monitoring has been intensified in the area to prevent further attacks and protect residents.

The police assured the public that efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and restore normalcy remain a top priority.

Bandits have frequently targeted villages in the North-Central and North-West regions, often carrying out kidnappings for ransom and looting communities.

Niger State has been among the hardest hit, alongside Kaduna, Benue, Plateau, Kebbi, and Zamfara states.

In November, armed gangs abducted over 250 students and staff from a Catholic school in Niger State.

Authorities later released the victims in two batches, without confirming if a ransom was paid.

The recent attack in Damala occurred less than 20 kilometres from Papiri village, where the school abduction took place.

Local church authorities reported a higher death toll from Saturday’s raid, claiming more than 40 fatalities.

“Reports indicate the bandits operated for hours with no security presence,” the Catholic Church in Kontagora stated on Facebook.

Nigeria faces multiple security challenges, ranging from jihadist insurgency and banditry to farmer-herder conflicts and separatist violence.

Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, highlighted the indiscriminate nature of the Damala attack

“Those killed and those abducted were traders, farmers, and schoolchildren from both Muslim and Christian backgrounds.”

Recent violent incidents include a suspected suicide bombing on Christmas Eve in Borno State, which killed at least five people at a mosque.

The United States has criticised Nigeria for its handling of security, claiming that some attacks target Christians, though Nigerian authorities reject such characterisations.

Washington carried out airstrikes on militants linked to the Islamic State group on Christmas Day, which Nigeria later approved.

In response to growing insecurity, President Bola Tinubu pledged a national security revamp and increased defence spending in the 2026 budget.

In early December, he replaced the defence minister, appointing a former top military commander to lead the ministry.
