Governor Mbah Signs N1.62tr 2026 Budget, Sets Ambitious Target Of N2.5bn Daily IGR

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has signed the state’s N1.62 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill into law, setting an ambitious target of generating over N2.5 billion in daily internally generated revenue (IGR).

Speaking on Wednesday during the signing ceremony, Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accelerating development across all sectors and commended the Enugu State House of Assembly for the speedy passage of the budget.

A breakdown of the budget shows that N1.296 trillion, representing 80 per cent, was allocated to capital expenditure, while N321.3 billion, or 20 per cent, was earmarked for recurrent spending.

The economic sector received the largest allocation of N825.9 billion, accounting for 51 per cent of the total budget.

The social sector was allocated N644.7 billion, representing 40.1 per cent, while administration, justice and regional development received N128 billion, N15.8 billion and N2 billion, respectively.

Education took the highest sectoral share at 32.27 per cent, with N30 billion allocated for school feeding in the state’s 260 Smart Green Schools.

Funding for the budget is expected to come from N870 billion in internally generated revenue, N387 billion from the Federation

Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), and N329 billion from capital receipts.
Mbah said the 2026 budget was anchored on inclusivity, accountability, transparency and strong institutions, adding that the projected revenue targets were achievable.

He noted that the administration had grown the state’s IGR from below N30 billion in 2023 to over N180 billion in 2024 and N400 billion in 2025.

According to him, Enugu State could become less dependent on federal allocations if the revenue projections are met, describing FAAC allocations as potential savings for future generations.

The governor explained that the projected N800 billion IGR for 2026 translates to over N70 billion monthly, N18 billion weekly and more than N2.5 billion daily, stressing the need for hard work and fiscal discipline.

He said the administration would forgo Christmas celebrations to remain focused on meeting the revenue and development targets.

Also speaking, Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Uchenna Ugwu, said the governor’s early engagement with lawmakers ensured a smooth and people-oriented budget process.

Ugwu said residents should expect major infrastructure projects in 2026, including roads, rail development, additional aircraft, transport terminals, smart secondary schools and the completion of 260 farm estates.

Chimamanda Adichie Refutes UNN Visiting Professor Appointment

Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has denied reports claiming that she was appointed a visiting professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

The denial was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by her communications team and signed by Omawumi Ogbe, who said no such offer was made to the writer.

According to the statement, Adichie has neither received an appointment nor engaged in any discussions with UNN regarding a visiting professorship, describing the reports as false and misleading.

The statement clarified that claims suggesting official appointment letters were signed and dated December 18, 2025, were inaccurate.

While noting that UNN occupies a special place in Adichie’s life as the institution where she grew up and where her parents served as Registrar and Professor respectively, the statement expressed disappointment that such a claim was circulated without proper verification.

Her team urged the public and media organisations to disregard the reports and requested outlets carrying the story to take it down to prevent further spread of misinformation.

Earlier, UNN had announced that it appointed Adichie alongside African Development Bank executive, Prof. Kevin Urama, and University of Chicago scholar, Prof. James Robinson, as visiting professors.

The university said the appointments, approved by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simon Ortuanya and conveyed through letters dated December 18, 2025, were aimed at repositioning the institution on the global academic stage.

FG Bars Closure Of Major Roads, Orders Contractors To Remain On Site During Yuletide

The Federal Government has directed contractors handling major federal road projects across the country to remain on their sites throughout the yuletide period, except with express approval from the Ministry of Works.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, gave the directive while addressing contractors in Abuja, warning that no construction site on key highways should be shut during the festive season due to the heavy volume of travel expected nationwide.

The affected roads include the Abuja–Lokoja, Abuja–Kano, Lagos–Port Harcourt, Keffi–Makurdi, Enugu–Onitsha, and Sokoto–Zamfara expressways, among others.

Umahi said the decision was aimed at easing traffic flow and preventing a repeat of the severe gridlock recently experienced on the Abuja–Lokoja expressway, where thousands of travellers were stranded for hours following a standoff between truck drivers and military personnel.

He described the incident as an embarrassment to the Federal Government and urged contractors to ensure roads are freed and made motorable throughout the festive period.

The minister also announced that contractors handling inherited Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Tax Credit road projects must formally exit all previous agreements before they can be considered for payment.

According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the payment of N263 billion by NNPCL to contractors, while the Ministry of Works will take over responsibility for further payments on the projects.

Umahi disclosed that the total debt owed to contractors from 2023 to date stands at N2.13 trillion, noting that payments would only commence after the figures are properly verified.

He added that contractors must provide documentary evidence of outstanding claims, stressing that debts incurred before he assumed office would require the involvement of anti-graft agencies, the Auditor-General, and other relevant bodies before settlement.

The minister further announced plans to strengthen project supervision, stating that from January 7, 2026, a director would be assigned to each NNPCL road project, while all senior directors would be required to supervise specific projects.

He warned that any official not digitally compliant would be reported to the Head of Service for removal.

Also speaking, Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, said the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency would, from 2026, discontinue minor projects such as solar street lighting and focus strictly on major road repairs and collapsed bridges.

Goronyo directed FERMA to adopt concrete rather than asphalt for road repairs, insisting that Nigerians are tired of excuses and expect visible results.

He added that the agency must prioritise fieldwork and concentrate on fixing major road infrastructure across the country.

Northern CAN Commends Adamawa Governor For Pardoning Death-Sentenced Farmer

The Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (Northern CAN) has applauded Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for granting clemency to Sunday Jackson, a Christian farmer who had been sentenced to death following a violent attack on his farm.

Governor Fintiri’s pardon, issued on Tuesday, triggered spontaneous celebrations in Yola and across Adamawa State, with residents taking to the streets to welcome the development.

In a Christmas message signed by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, and Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, Northern CAN described Jackson’s initial conviction as a miscarriage of justice and said the governor’s intervention restored public confidence in fairness and the rule of law.

“The grant of clemency brings relief and affirms that self-defence in the face of mortal danger should not be criminalised, while terrorists and their sponsors remain at large in society,” the statement said.

While commending Governor Fintiri, Northern CAN urged Nigerian leaders to use the Christmas season as a period for national reflection, justice, and renewal, warning that the country cannot continue to suffer under terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.

The association also called on the Federal Government to conduct thorough investigations into the financiers and sponsors of violent crimes, stressing that lasting peace will remain elusive unless perpetrators are held accountable.

The statement further highlighted the moral significance of Christmas, describing it as “an opportunity for sober reflection on the nation’s conscience and social direction,” and commended faith-based organisations, community leaders, and individuals who have supported vulnerable citizens during the festive season.

On security matters, Northern CAN praised the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in protecting lives and property, while urging continued commitment until insecurity is decisively tackled.

The group welcomed the Federal Government’s recent designation of kidnappers, bandits, and other violent criminal groups as terrorists, saying it strengthens national security and demonstrates a firm commitment to addressing insecurity.

Northern CAN concluded by calling on leaders to uphold justice, equity, and the rule of law, and urged citizens to remain law-abiding, peaceful, and committed to national unity.

“As the nation celebrates Christmas, let us support our leaders, pray for the healing of our land, and work collectively for a safer, more just, and united Nigeria,” the association said.

Court Remands Traditional Ruler Over Attempted Murder Allegations

A Magistrate Court in Mowe, Ogun State, has ordered the remand of 56-year-old traditional ruler, Babatunde Akanni Sonola, following allegations of attempted murder in Makogi community, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.

Sonola was arraigned alongside two other suspects, Dimeji Adigun Mustapha, 25, and Taoheed Sonola, 43.

All three face four counts of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.

According to court documents, they allegedly attacked Kehinde Owoseni, who sustained severe head injuries, as well as Saheed Ojekunle, whose hand and leg were reportedly nearly severed by machete cuts, and another victim, Afeez Kazeem.

A source told DAILY GAZETTE that Sonola was initially remanded in prison on December 18, 2025, but later secured bail on Monday, December 22.

The bail conditions include a sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be a second-class traditional ruler, and a requirement to maintain peace pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Residents of Makogi have praised the court’s actions so far and urged that justice be allowed to run its full course, emphasizing the need for accountability for the victims.

Community sources allege that Sonola has a history of abusing his traditional position to seize land unlawfully and intimidate residents, often with the assistance of suspected cultists.

Reports indicate that the dispute stems from allegations that he sold land belonging to the Osho Kanakana family despite repeated warnings and legal notices.

Several residents recounted incidents of violence and property destruction allegedly carried out by cultists loyal to Sonola.

Sunday Ojeyemi, a tailor, said armed attackers raided his shop, destroying equipment and stealing industrial sewing machines, forcing him and his apprentices to flee.

Elderly resident Omotayo Kanakana said her eight-room house was destroyed and she and her children were forced to hide.

Another community elder, Mulikatu Opasola, said her son’s shop was looted before attackers fired gunshots into her home at night.

The trial has been adjourned to February 23, 2026, for continuation.

Residents have called on the Ogun State Government and security agencies to closely monitor the case to ensure justice is served, regardless of the social status of those involved.

NBA Calls For Suspension Of Tax Reform Acts Over Alleged Alterations

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for the suspension of the recently passed Tax Reform Acts, citing alleged alterations in the gazetted version compared to what was approved by the National Assembly.

The controversy emerged after Sokoto House of Representatives member Abdulsamad Dasuki flagged discrepancies between the gazetted tax laws and the versions passed by lawmakers.

In response, the NBA, through its president Afam Osigwe, said the matter raises “grave concerns about the integrity, transparency, and credibility of Nigeria’s legislative process.”

The NBA urged that “a comprehensive, open, and transparent investigation be conducted to clarify the circumstances surrounding the enactment of the laws” and called for an immediate suspension of all plans to implement the Tax Reform Acts until the issues are resolved.

Osigwe warned that the alleged discrepancies “strike at the very heart of constitutional governance and call into question the procedural sanctity that must attend lawmaking in a democratic society.”

He added that such legal uncertainty could have severe economic consequences, noting that it “unsettles the business environment, erodes investor confidence, and creates unpredictability for individuals, businesses, and institutions required to comply with the law.”

President Bola Tinubu had signed the four tax reform bills into law in June 2025, concluding months of debate and scrutiny.

The laws include the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill.

The Federal Government had slated January 2026 for implementation, arguing that the reforms would simplify tax compliance, reduce burdensome taxes, enhance domestic productivity, and transform Nigeria’s fiscal landscape.

Opposition figures and groups, including Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and the African Democratic Party, have joined the NBA in calling for a halt to the implementation, while Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, defended the reforms, insisting that no new laws were being introduced.
