Ex-Access Bank Operations Chief Arraigned In Enugu Over Alleged $510,000 Fraud

The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a former Head of Operations at Access Bank Plc, Enugu branch, Obinna Nwaobi, for allegedly diverting $510,000 (N739 million) belonging to a customer.

Nwaobi appeared before Justice F. O. Giwa-Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court, Enugu, last Thursday, November 13, 2025, on a nine-count charge bordering on forgery and fraudulent diversion of funds from the account of Lantern Gate Nigeria Limited.

According to one of the charges, the defendant allegedly induced Access Bank on August 8, 2024, to transfer the funds under the false representation that the customer had approved the transaction, an offence contrary to Section 1(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006.

Another charge accused him of forging an Access Bank Domestic Fund Transfer Form dated August 28, 2024, to deceive the bank into treating it as genuine.

Nwaobi pleaded not guilty to all counts.

His counsel, F. C. Obinna, sought bail based on a motion supported by an eight-paragraph affidavit.

However, EFCC counsel ACE II Mainforce Adaka Ekwu opposed the bail request, citing an 11-paragraph counter-affidavit and arguing that the strength of evidence against the defendant could encourage him to flee.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Giwa-Ogunbanjo granted Nwaobi bail in the sum of N250 million, with three sureties in like sum.

Two sureties must own landed property in Enugu State and submit their title documents to the court, while the third must be a relative of the defendant and provide proof of tax payment for the past three years.

The court also directed the defendant and sureties to provide two passport photographs each, and ordered Nwaobi to surrender his international passport and National Identification Number pending the conclusion of the trial.

He was remanded at the Enugu Custodial Centre until the bail conditions are fulfilled. The case is scheduled for trial on March 10, 11, and 12, 2026.

The matter began in September 2024 when Access Bank petitioned the EFCC, alleging that unauthorised transfers were carried out from Lantern Gate Nigeria Limited’s account without the customer’s consent.

Tinubu’s Aide Meets Renowned Cleric Dachomo Over Plateau Killings

Abiodun Essiet, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, has held discussions with Plateau-based cleric Ezekiel Dachomo and representatives of Miyetti Allah as part of ongoing peacebuilding efforts in the state.

According to Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Essiet was deployed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a peace envoy to promote dialogue and reconciliation in the region.

During her two-day engagement, she met with Dachomo, regional chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Barkin Ladi, as well as traditional and community leaders.

The discussions centered on leveraging faith-based leadership to foster peace, unity, and social development.

Essiet also addressed widows, conveying President Tinubu’s message of ethnic reconciliation, and met with Fulani leaders in Barkin Ladi to strengthen dialogue and understanding between pastoralists and farming communities.

In addition, she conducted a workshop focused on establishing a Community-Based Peace Structure across the 17 Local Government Areas of Jos.

“Dr. Essiet held a closed-door session with the Irigwe community, Miyetti Allah representatives, and the Youth Council of Bassa LGA to discuss sustaining peace. The 17-member peace committee was highlighted as a key tool for dialogue, reconciliation, and coexistence between communities,” the statement read.

The presidential aide reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to inclusive governance and noted that the Community-Based Peace Structure serves as an instrument for grassroots unity and long-term stability in North Central Nigeria.

A tangible result of the initiative was the resolution of a dispute between David Toma, owner of Agha Farm in Gyel district of Jos South, and some herdsmen over farm destruction, which led to the return of two cows.

Kidnap Victims Should Drag FG To Court, Seek Ransom Refund – Falana

Senior lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has called on Nigerians who have paid ransom to kidnappers or bandits to consider taking legal action against the Federal Government and demand reimbursement.

Speaking at the opening of the Legal Year at the Faculty of Law, University of Abuja, Falana cited both the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, stressing that it is the government’s duty to protect citizens’ lives.

He highlighted the disparity in government response, noting that swift action is often taken when high-profile individuals are abducted, while ordinary Nigerians are frequently left to fend for themselves.

Falana emphasized that the state’s failure to tackle the growing wave of kidnappings constitutes a breach of its constitutional responsibilities.

He argued that victims seeking refunds through legal channels would assert their rights and push the government to take its security obligations more seriously.

“Citizens who are abducted, and whose families are forced to pay ransom, have the right to go to court and demand that the government refunds the money,” Falana said.

“It is the government’s duty to protect every life. When that protection fails, the government must take responsibility.”

“There is a clear class disparity: officials and high-profile individuals are rescued swiftly, while ordinary citizens must scramble to raise ransom. Citizens are equal before the law, and this equality must be reflected in government action.”

Security experts have warned that kidnapping in Nigeria has become a highly organized and lucrative criminal enterprise.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigerians paid a staggering N2.23 trillion in ransom between May 2023 and April 2024.

The CESPS 2024 survey also estimated that there were over 2.2 million kidnapping incidents during this period, with an average ransom of N2.7 million per case.

I’m On My Way To APC, Gov Kefas Tells Taraba Residents

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has announced that he will formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday, November 19.

The governor confirmed his planned move during a weekend inspection of renovation works at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo, the state capital.

Speaking to journalists, Kefas said the decision was motivated by his desire to advance the long-term interests of Taraba State.

“I will officially transition from the PDP to the APC on November 19. This move is about the destiny and future of the people of Taraba,” he stated.

Preparations are underway to receive guests expected at the event. When asked if any conditions were attached to his defection, the governor replied that there were none.

Members of the Taraba State Executive Council have publicly endorsed Kefas’ decision.

“Go And Sin No More,” Obasanjo Tells Fayose As Political Rift Ends

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has announced that he has forgiven former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, bringing to an end their long-standing political feud.

The reconciliation came during Fayose’s 65th birthday celebration in Lagos on Saturday.

In a video clip shared by CityEdge TV, Obasanjo humorously recounted how people reminded him of past grievances before he attended the celebration.

“Some people said, ‘We heard that you are going to Ayo Fayose’s birthday. Can’t you remember that he abused you?’ I said, ‘Thank you for reminding me,’” he joked, drawing laughter from the audience.

The feud between the two politicians traces back to 2006, after Fayose’s removal as Ekiti Governor, which was allegedly linked to Obasanjo.

Tensions escalated in 2010 during a public event in Osun State, where the two exchanged harsh words, with Obasanjo reportedly calling Fayose a ‘bastard’ and Fayose responding by labeling Obasanjo the ‘father of bastards’.

Over the years, Fayose frequently criticized Obasanjo’s public statements, including in 2017 when he challenged the former president’s claim that his generation had failed Nigeria.

Last Sunday, Fayose visited Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State, ahead of his birthday.

Prior to the visit, Fayose sent emissaries, including former Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka, to facilitate the reconciliation.

Images from the visit show the two leaders in a friendly mood, even playing the traditional game “Ayo Olopon” together.

Speaking at the celebration, Obasanjo recalled how Fayose’s emissaries paved the way for his attendance.

“You did not come directly to knock at my door. You sent Folusho as an emissary to feel the pulse and about an hour later, you came,” he said.

Obasanjo also recounted how Fayose and his wife sought forgiveness during the process.

“You have asked for forgiveness, and as far as I am concerned, you are forgiven. But the right lessons must be learnt,” Obasanjo said.

He also encouraged Fayose to extend forgiveness to others and resolve outstanding grievances.

Obasanjo praised Fayose’s political contributions and emphasized that celebrating 65 years on earth is a moment for reflection, reconciliation, and joy, quoting the biblical verse, “mourn with those who mourn, and rejoice with those who rejoice.”

APC Is Like Noah’s Ark, Says Governor Sule

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has likened the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to Noah’s Ark, describing the party as a vessel that has come to rescue Nigerians.

He made the statement on Saturday while receiving decampees from various political parties into APC in the state.

According to Governor Sule, President Bola Tinubu has provided sufficient resources to strengthen the party and promote development across the country, motivating thousands of politicians to join APC.

“APC remains the only Noah’s Ark for Nigeria’s survival. There is no reason or excuse not to support President Bola Ahmad Tinubu,” Sule said.

“Tinubu has already transformed the country through his reforms and hard work.”

He added, “Anyone not in the APC is missing the Noah’s Ark. Today, APC is everywhere in Plateau and Nasarawa because the President has done well for the people.”

Governor Sule urged citizens to back the reelection of President Tinubu and support all APC candidates in the upcoming general elections.

Two Killed In Fresh Benue Attack

Two people have reportedly been killed in a new attack by armed assailants while returning from the market in Kwande Local Government Area, Benue State.

Eyewitnesses said the victims were ambushed on their way from Jato-Aka market to Nzaav community in Yaav Council Ward, Turan district. The attackers reportedly opened fire and inflicted severe machete injuries.

A former Kwande LGA official, Akerigba Lawrence, told DAILY GAZETTE that the incident occurred around 4 pm on Saturday.

He described finding the bodies with deep wounds, lying in pools of blood.

“This is disturbing. The victims were badly wounded. It shows that attacks are ongoing even after the invaders overran most communities except Jato-Aka in Turan land,” he said.

Kwande LGA Chairman, Yarkwan Tersua, confirmed the attack and appealed for urgent intervention, noting that residents feel helpless amid repeated violence.

He called the killings devastating and stressed that the situation poses serious challenges to community safety.

“We are calling on the federal government to swiftly come to our aid,” he said.

The Benue Police Command, through spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet, had not commented on the incident at press time, as calls and messages went unanswered.

Nigeria Rejects Cameroon’s Request To Extradite Opposition Leader Tchiroma, Shields Him In Adamawa

Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary is currently under the protection of Nigerian security agencies in Yola, Adamawa State, after Nigeria declined a request from Cameroonian authorities to extradite him, according to BBC reports.

Tchiroma, who contested President Paul Biya’s victory in the October presidential election, claimed he received 54.8% of the vote, compared to Biya’s 53.7%.

He was removed from his residence in Garoua on the night of 28–29 October amid escalating tensions following the election.

Reports indicate that a team of Cameroonian special security officers attempted to abduct Tchiroma on 2 November, allegedly with some involvement from Nigerian security personnel.

Fearing a potential escalation, Tchiroma was escorted across the border into Nigeria, where he is reportedly safe.

In a Facebook post on 31 October, Tchiroma thanked the “loyalist army” for ensuring his safety and protection.

Earlier incidents had raised concerns over his security, including gunfire near his residence on 29 October and the deployment of armed soldiers in Marouare, his neighborhood.

Checkpoints were also set up near his home, which were seen as attempts to restrict his movement.

The Cameroonian government, led by President Biya, maintained that Tchiroma had violated the law by declaring himself the winner of the election before official results were announced.

Biya warned against post-election unrest, stressing that Cameroon could not afford a crisis with potentially severe consequences.

In statements on 13 and 14 November, he reiterated that order would prevail and emphasized ongoing security measures, including extended post-election patrols until 10 December.

Tchiroma has reportedly been moved to Abuja at some point, though his exact current location within Nigeria remains unconfirmed.

The Nigeria Immigration Service did not respond to requests for clarification on his whereabouts.

Nigeria To Face DR Congo In Tense World Cup Playoff Final In Morocco

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set for a high-stakes showdown against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup intercontinental playoff in Morocco.

Both teams earned their spots after dramatic semifinal victories.

Nigeria booked their place with a thrilling 4–1 extra-time win over Gabon, overturning a 1–1 draw in regulation.

Chidera Ejuke scored a late goal, while Victor Osimhen’s brace sealed the victory.

DR Congo, on the other hand, edged past Cameroon 1–0 thanks to a 91st-minute strike from Chancel Mbemba, setting up a final clash between two resilient teams.

The match is scheduled for Sunday, 16 November, at Stade Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan, kicking off at 8:00 pm Nigerian time. Fans can watch the game on FIFA+ or follow live commentary via BBC News Pidgin.

Nigeria’s squad features key players including Victor Osimhen, Akor Adams, Alex Iwobi, Benjamin Fredrick, Moses Simon, and Ademola Lookman.

Wilfred Ndidi will also feature after CAF lifted his suspension due to accumulated yellow cards, giving Nigeria strength in midfield.

Coach Eric Chelle will face critical decisions in midfield and defense against a DR Congo team built on discipline, counter-attacks, and set-piece threats.

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr warned: “Nigeria are the favourites, but they must remain vigilant. Congo are physically strong and dangerous on set pieces.”

Playing on neutral ground, both teams will need tactical discipline and individual brilliance to prevail.

Key players will be under scrutiny, Stanley Nwabali is expected to guard Nigeria’s goal, while Osimhen, Simon, Lookman, and Fredrick will be tasked with converting chances and maintaining composure in defense.

On paper, Nigeria holds a slight advantage in squad depth and experience, but DR Congo’s recent performances suggest they can challenge higher-ranked teams.

This will mark the first competitive meeting between Nigeria and DR Congo since a 1–1 friendly in 2018.

Historically, DR Congo has won three of their five encounters against Nigeria, with two victories for the Super Eagles and one draw.

With World Cup qualification on the line, Sunday’s match is not just a test of skill, it will challenge the character, strategy, and mental resilience of both teams.

The Super Eagles aim to capitalize on their momentum, while DR Congo will look to continue their surprising run in the playoffs.

Stop Divisive Rhetoric, Leadership Requires Humility, Not Bitterness – Obi Fires Soludo

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has advised Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, to adopt humility, compassion, and gratitude in leadership instead of engaging in divisive rhetoric.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Abuja, Obi said leaders must demonstrate responsibility not only to citizens but also to God, especially at defining moments such as the governor’s certificate-of-return ceremony.

Obi’s comments came after Soludo reportedly mocked him and his supporters, describing the former governor as “a frustrated politician without a club” and linking challenges in Anambra’s education sector to his administration.

Obi said he found Soludo’s remarks unnecessary and disappointing.
“I was taken aback,” he said.

“A certificate-of-return event should be a moment of thanksgiving, love, and magnanimity. Instead, there was bitterness. That is unfortunate.”

Clarifying his involvement in the recent Anambra election, Obi stressed that he attended only three public engagements to which he was formally invited.

“I did not endorse any candidate or hold private political meetings. There was no basis for the level of speculation surrounding my presence,” he said.

Recounting his experience on Election Day, Obi said he witnessed tensions in his community but intervened to prevent escalation.

“When some outsiders tried to vote here, I appealed for calm. Leadership is not defined by winning elections but by fairness, courage, and peaceful conduct, even when provoked,” he added.

Obi also reflected on his achievements, contrasting his political journey with that of current gubernatorial contenders.

“If governorship candidates are in the first division, I have played in the Champions League. I ran for vice president in 2019, ran for president in 2023, and won 11 states including the FCT. My track record is public,” he said.

Speaking on his own time in office, Obi noted that he and Jim Nwobodo remain the only Anambra governors elected in their forties who completed second terms.

He emphasized that he holds no personal grudge against Soludo.

“I wish him greater success—if only to inspire humility, compassion, and genuine service,” he added.

Obi concluded with a broader reflection on public office.

“Leadership is not about resentment,” he said. “It is about gratitude, service, love, and recognising the grace God extends to us.”
