Igbo Town Unions Petition UN, ECOWAS Court Over Lagos Demolitions, Allege Ethnic Bias

The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has escalated its protest against what it calls the “systematic demolition” of Igbo-owned properties in Lagos State, filing petitions before the United Nations Human Rights Council, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

Speaking at a press briefing in Umuahia, Abia State, ASITU’s National President, Chief Emeka Diwe, condemned the demolitions, describing them as acts of “economic cleansing” targeted at Igbo traders and investors.

Diwe lamented that Nigeria was “gradually dying from the cancer of ethnic discrimination and selective justice,” accusing government institutions of failing to uphold fairness and equality.

Flanked by members of ASITU’s National Executive Council representing various Igbo communities, the president explained that the petitions were filed after several unsuccessful attempts to engage relevant Nigerian authorities.

“We have not lost faith in Nigerian institutions, but they have consistently failed to respond to our documented complaints. That is why we have turned to regional and international bodies for intervention,” he stated.

Diwe dismissed the Lagos State Government’s claim that the demolished buildings were illegally constructed on waterways, insisting that the explanation was a cover for deeper prejudice.

“These properties were lawfully acquired and duly approved by relevant agencies. Such demolitions send a disturbing message to investors, that property rights in Nigeria are insecure and that ethnicity may determine how justice is applied,” Diwe asserted.

He emphasized that the destruction of legitimate businesses would harm investor confidence, reduce job opportunities, and damage Nigeria’s reputation as a nation governed by the rule of law.

According to ASITU, many demolition notices were issued only a few days before enforcement, preventing property owners from seeking legal redress.

The group further accused officials of ignoring valid approval documents presented by affected traders.

“Many of these buildings had valid permits issued by the same Lagos State Government that later tore them down. This is not law enforcement. It is the deliberate erasure of livelihoods and a violation of constitutional guarantees of equality and justice,” Diwe said.

While appealing for calm, ASITU urged the Igbo business community to redirect part of their investments to the South-East to promote regional economic growth.

“To our brothers and sisters in business, do not lose hope. Let us embrace the philosophy of Aku Ruo Ulo, let wealth return home,” Diwe advised.

“When we invest in our homeland, we create jobs, security, and dignity for our people.”

He clarified that ASITU’s demand was not an agitation for secession but a call for justice and equitable treatment.

“Our call for justice is not a demand for separation,” Diwe explained, “but a demand for fairness, mutual respect, and equitable treatment of all ethnic groups in Nigeria.”

Gas Explosion Rocks Lagos Market, One Injured, Several Shops Razed

A gas explosion on Sunday afternoon rocked the Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos, leaving one person injured and destroying several shops in the Orisunbare Market.

Eyewitnesses said the blast, which occurred around 2:00 p.m., was triggered by a leaking gas cylinder in one of the shops.

The impact of the explosion reportedly caused extensive damage to nearby structures and sparked panic among traders and residents.

“I was near the market when I heard a loud bang,” said one eyewitness.

“People started running and screaming; the scene was chaotic.”

Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, arrived swiftly at the scene to contain the situation.

One person sustained severe hand burns, but no fatalities were recorded.

The Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident, explaining that the explosion occurred at a gas retail outlet that stored multiple cylinders of different sizes.

“Swift responses from the Sari-Iganmu and Ilupeju Fire Stations helped bring the situation under control and prevented further escalation. Several shops were affected, but only one person sustained minor injuries,” she stated.

Adeseye added that another emergency was simultaneously attended to by the Service involving a 33,000-litre petrol tanker that spilled its contents along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, near the Berger Car Depot.

She said the tanker, which was travelling from the Apapa Terminal, collided with a Mercedes-Benz SUV and seven stationary vehicles displayed for sale.

Prompt intervention by the Fire Service prevented the spill from triggering a major fire.

“The remaining product is currently being transloaded into another tanker, while efforts are ongoing to recover the damaged vehicles and safely conclude the operation,” she added.

Names, LGAs Of Proposed New South-East State Revealed Following NASS Approval

Fresh information has emerged following the approval by the Joint Committee of the National Assembly on Constitutional Review for the creation of an additional state in Nigeria’s South-East region.

Reliable sources within the legislature revealed that the proposal, which has been under quiet discussion for several months, has now secured committee approval, marking a potential milestone in Nigeria’s political restructuring.

According to documents obtained by reporters, the proposed new South-East state may be named Etiti State, with Hon. Amaobi Ogah sponsoring the bill in the House of Representatives.

In the Senate, Senator Ned Nwoko is backing a related proposal to create Anioma State from Delta North.

The move has generated cautious optimism among South-Eastern leaders, many of whom have long advocated for an additional state to bring the region on par with others that currently have six states each.

The draft proposal suggests that Etiti State would be carved from local government areas across Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu States, including:

  • Imo State: Okigwe, Onuimo, Isiala Mbano, Ehime Mbano, Obowo, Ihitte/Uboma, Ideato North
  • Abia State: Isuikwuato, Umunneochi
  • Ebonyi State: Onicha, Ohaozara, Ivo
  • Anambra State: Orumba North, Orumba South
  • Enugu State: Awgu, Oji River, Aninri

Meanwhile, the Anioma State proposal in the Senate aims to unite the following Delta North LGAs: Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North East, Ika South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, and Ukwuani.

The proposals will now move to plenary sessions in both chambers of the National Assembly for consideration and voting before proceeding to the respective state Houses of Assembly as part of the constitutional amendment process.

Journalist Regains Freedom After 10 Days In Kidnappers’ Custody

A multimedia journalist with Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR), publishers of PRNigeria and Economic Confidential, Salis Manaja, has regained his freedom after spending ten days in captivity.

Manaja was abducted on Wednesday, October 13, while travelling to Ilorin, Kwara State, to participate in the annual Young Communication Fellowship organised by IMPR.

Confirming his release, the Founder of IMPR, Mallam Yushau Shuaib, told journalists during the closing ceremony of the fellowship in Ilorin that the victim had safely reunited with his family.

“He was on his way to Ilorin when the unfortunate incident happened. We thank Almighty Allah that he has been released and reunited with his family,” Shuaib said.

He explained that colleagues became alarmed when Manaja failed to arrive at the venue and could not be reached, as his phone had been switched off.

Shuaib urged young communicators to stay committed to promoting positive narratives about Nigeria despite prevailing national challenges.

“No matter the circumstances, journalists should remain defenders of democracy, ensure balanced reporting, and uphold the principles of fact-checking,” he advised.

He also lamented the rise of misinformation on social media, stressing that IMPR’s training initiatives aim to equip young journalists with the skills to use technology ethically and responsibly.

“During the week-long training, participants engaged with experts from the United States and Germany through virtual sessions, using facilities provided by NITDA at our centres in Ilorin, Kano, and Abuja,” he added.

Shuaib encouraged Nigerian youths to leverage opportunities at PRNigeria training centres to enhance their digital and artificial intelligence competence in line with global media standards.

Also speaking, Professor Saudat Sallah Abdulbaqi of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin, lauded the fellows for their dedication and professionalism, describing them as ambassadors of ethical journalism.

The PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship is an annual capacity-building initiative of IMPR aimed at grooming emerging journalists and communication professionals. So far, 20 participants have completed training sessions in Kano and Ilorin, with another batch scheduled to begin soon.

Putin Announces Successful Test Of Nuclear-Powered Missile Capable Of Striking Targets Anywhere In The World

Russian President, Vladimir Putin on Sunday confirmed the successful final test of a new nuclear-powered cruise missile, the Burevestnik, capable of striking targets anywhere in the world.

The announcement comes amid Russia’s ongoing offensive in Ukraine and uncertainty over a potential summit with U.S. President Donald Trump.

“The decisive tests are now complete,” Putin said in a video released by the Kremlin during a meeting with military officials.

He directed the military to prepare the necessary infrastructure to deploy the weapon in active service.

Describing the missile as a “unique creation that no one else in the world possesses,” Putin said the Burevestnik has unlimited range. According to Russia’s Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, the missile flew 14,000 kilometres (8,700 miles) during its last test on October 21, lasting 15 hours.

He emphasized that this distance was not the weapon’s maximum capability.

“The technical characteristics of the Burevestnik allow it to hit heavily protected targets at any distance with guaranteed precision,” Gerasimov stated.

First announced in 2018, the Burevestnik is designed to evade all existing defense systems, a move Russia justified as a response to perceived threats from the United States.

Seven years later, the final test underscores Moscow’s continued focus on strategic weapons development, even as Russian forces advance gradually in Ukraine.

Efforts to negotiate peace between Moscow and Kyiv have stalled.

Trump, who had pledged to end the war swiftly if he returned to the White House, recently imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, citing stalled negotiations. He also downplayed the likelihood of a new summit with Putin.

Kremlin negotiator Kirill Dmitriev met with Trump administration officials on Friday and Saturday, with talks reportedly continuing Sunday.

Putin, however, declined to set a timeline for ending hostilities.

“We are not going to align anything with any dates or events… our actions will be based on military rationality,” he said.

Meanwhile, violence continues on the ground. A Russian drone attack on Kyiv overnight killed three people and wounded dozens, according to the city’s mayor.

In Russia’s Belgorod region, a Ukrainian drone attack killed one person and injured another, officials said.

ADC Urges INEC To Disqualify Soludo Over Cash-For-Votes Promise

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate what it described as an open attempt by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, to induce voters financially ahead of the November 8 governorship election in the state.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement on Sunday, urged INEC not to overlook the governor’s recent comments, which, according to him, amounted to a violation of the Electoral Act.

Governor Soludo, while addressing supporters at a campaign rally in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area, on Saturday, had promised financial rewards to wards that deliver victory for his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in the forthcoming election.

“When we were campaigning for the Senate, we knew we would win every ward in the South Senatorial Zone, but we still had some incentives. Any ward that APGA won received ₦1 million, and we won all the wards in Orumba South,” Soludo told the cheering crowd.

“For the November 8 election, any ward that wins again will receive ₦1 million, while the top three performing wards will get ₦5 million, ₦2 million, and ₦1 million respectively,” he added.

Reacting, Abdullahi condemned the statement, saying it showed the governor had lost public trust and was resorting to desperate tactics.

“Ahead of the November 8 election, Soludo has clearly lost the confidence of the people of Anambra. Only a sitting governor who has run out of goodwill would so openly resort to cash-for-votes, in direct breach of Sections 121 and 127 of the Electoral Act, which criminalise voter inducement,” Abdullahi stated.

He described the governor’s remarks as “a new level of desperation wrapped in impunity” and urged INEC to act swiftly.

“I hope INEC is not pretending not to see this. The law is clear, and no one, no matter how highly placed, should be above it,” Abdullahi added.

UniJos Student Allegedly Kills Colleague, Buries Body In Shallow Grave

A tragic incident has rocked the University of Jos (UniJos), Plateau State, as a 300-level student, Peter Mafuyai, was allegedly murdered by his friend and fellow student, Nanpon Timnan, a 200-level student from the Department of Agriculture.

The incident reportedly occurred last Friday at Mafuyai’s off-campus residence, where Timnan is said to have attacked him with a machete and buried his body in a shallow grave behind the house.

Sources told reporters that the two students were close friends who frequently spent time together.

On the day of the incident, they had gone out to play football, returned home, and later visited a nearby music studio for a recording session before heading back to their apartment.

According to one source, “Upon returning from the studio, he (Nanpon) went to get a machete.

“The other occupants of the compound, who were also friends with them, asked what he wanted to do with it, and he said he needed it for something.”

“He then struck his friend with the machete. The others raised an alarm and ran to call for help, but before they returned, he had buried the body behind the house in a shallow grave.”

The police have since invited all the students involved for questioning, and an investigation is ongoing.

While the motive behind the killing remains unclear, some sources speculated that it might be connected to a disagreement over the music project both students were working on.

Others suggested that limited information from witnesses, owing to the ongoing ASUU strike, has made it difficult to establish the exact cause.

Another student, who spoke anonymously, expressed concern about the potential impact of the incident on the university’s preparations to host the Nigerian University Games (NUGA) 2025, scheduled to begin in about 10 days.

“This is a very sensitive time for the school,” the source said.

“Hosting the games has already faced several challenges, and there were earlier concerns about security in Jos. People are already calling to ask if it’s safe to come. This development might give more reason to those arguing that the games should be relocated.”

When contacted, the university’s Acting Head of Information, Tongdyen Dachung, declined to comment, stating that she needed to verify the facts before issuing an official statement.

Meanwhile, the President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Jane Pwajok, confirmed that the matter was being handled by the police.

She said the union was working to verify the details and manage the situation to avoid jeopardizing the upcoming NUGA Games.

Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or text messages at the time of filing this report.

In a statement issued on Sunday, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi confirmed that the operation took place at Proxy Lagos, a nightclub owned by Pretty Mike and located in Victoria Island.

Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad of the Enugu State Police Command have successfully rescued a kidnapped victim and recovered his vehicle, firearm, and live ammunition following a late-night pursuit that forced the abductors to flee.

The rescue operation occurred around 11:30 pm on October 19, 2025, along the Ozalla/Umueze axis in Nkanu West Local Government Area, after the Command received a distress call about the abduction of a man in the Awkunanaw area of Enugu.

Confirming the development, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said operatives immediately responded to the distress call and tracked the kidnappers to their hideout.

On noticing the advancing police team, the suspects abandoned the victim and escaped into the night, leaving behind vital evidence.

Recovered from the scene were the victim’s Lexus 350 SUV, a locally made Beretta-like pistol, and three live rounds of ammunition.

According to Ndukwe, “The rescue and recoveries followed the operatives’ swift response to a distress call reporting the abduction of the victim within the Awkunanaw area of Enugu. The team pursued the suspects to the mentioned location, where they escaped, abandoning the victim and the recovered exhibits.”

The victim was later reunited with his family, while police operatives have launched a manhunt to track down the fleeing suspects.

Commending the officers for their courage and professionalism, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to eliminating violent crime in the state.

“The Command will continue to sustain the fight against unrepentant criminals in the state,” CP Giwa said. “We urge residents to remain law-abiding and assist the Police with credible information that can help us keep Enugu safe.”

The Enugu State Police Command assured residents that it remains vigilant and proactive, with intensified patrols and tactical operations ongoing across identified flashpoints to ensure the continued safety of lives and property in the state.
