FG Dares Trump, Insists Nigeria Won’t Accept Any Deportees From U.S

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has declared that the country will no longer accept deportees from the United States, insisting that the issue is no longer up for negotiation in bilateral relations between both nations.

Tuggar made the remarks during a fireside chat at the Reuters NEXT Gulf Summit held in Abu Dhabi, where he emphasized that Nigeria’s priority lies in building and empowering its own population rather than taking in returnees under external pressure.

“That ship has sailed. We’ve made our point, and I believe it’s no longer on the discussion table,” Tuggar said.

“We don’t see the need to take nationals from other countries under duress.”

The minister explained that Nigeria’s focus is to train and equip its citizens to meet future economic and demographic challenges.

“We already have a population of over 200 million people, and we’re projected to reach about 400 million in the next 25 years,” he said.

“Our goal is to train our workforce and ensure we have the right dependency ratio to sustain our future.”

Tuggar clarified that Nigeria continues to enjoy a healthy and respectful relationship with the U.S, adding that the stance on deportees should be viewed as a matter of mutual understanding rather than confrontation.

Beyond migration issues, Tuggar also urged wealthier nations to rethink their approach to trade with Africa, cautioning against treating the continent merely as a source of raw materials.

“Sometimes it’s like the game Minecraft, there’s oil, there’s gas, there are critical minerals and rare earths, and they just pick and invest in bits,” he said.

“That’s not the right approach. Engagement should be based on mutual respect and shared interests, recognizing that Africa needs to develop.”

He warned that neglecting Africa’s development would only perpetuate global challenges such as irregular migration and economic instability.

Tuggar further noted that Nigeria, despite facing power and infrastructure deficits, has been less affected by U.S trade tariffs than other nations and continues to diversify its trade relationships across various global partners.

The minister’s remarks come as several African countries, including Burkina Faso, have rejected similar deportation proposals from the U.S., calling them “indecent.”

Police Redeploy Errant Abuja DPO Caught Slapping Man In Viral Video

The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Miller Dantawaye, has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the Ushafa Division after a viral video showed him slapping a young man during an arrest.

The incident, captured on camera and widely circulated on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, triggered outrage among Nigerians who described the officer’s conduct as unprofessional and a clear abuse of power.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner condemned the officer’s actions, describing them as “unacceptable and inconsistent with the core values and ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.”

“The Commissioner of Police strongly condemns the officer’s actions, which fall short of the high standards of discipline, civility, and professionalism expected of police officers,” Adeh stated.

She explained that the officer has been recalled to the command headquarters pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation into the incident.

“Consequently, the officer has been redeployed, and the situation is currently under investigation,” Adeh added.

The police chief also used the opportunity to warn all Divisional Police Officers and their subordinates to maintain professionalism and courtesy in the discharge of their duties, warning that any form of misconduct or abuse of power would attract severe disciplinary measures.

“While administrative disciplinary steps are being taken, CP Dantawaye reminds all officers to remain professional, courteous, and law-abiding in performing their duties,” the statement read.

“Any act of misconduct or abuse of power will not be tolerated.”

The Commissioner further urged residents of the FCT to cooperate with the police and maintain mutual respect to enhance community policing and public safety.

“Mutual respect and cooperation are essential for effective community policing and ensuring public safety,” Dantawaye noted.

The command also encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities or any form of police misconduct through designated communication channels.

This is not the first time a police officer has faced redeployment over misconduct.

In a similar incident earlier this year, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, redeployed the DPO of the Enu-Owa Division after a video surfaced online showing a social media influencer, Adefolarin Ayomiposi (popularly known as Mandykiss), allegedly mishandling a case involving a mother and daughter.

Likewise, in June, the FCT Police Command launched an investigation into another viral video in which officers were accused of harassing a motorist along the Chikakore Bridge area during a routine patrol.

According to Adeh, the command remains committed to ensuring accountability and professionalism across all ranks.

Governor Mbah Meets Tinubu After Defecting To APC

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, just days after announcing his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Governor Mbah described the meeting as a strategic step toward deepening collaboration between Enugu State and the Federal Government.

“We discussed ways to strengthen collaboration between Enugu State and the Federal Government to deliver greater prosperity for our people,” Mbah wrote.

“Enugu remains fully committed to playing its part in building a stronger, united, and more prosperous Nigeria.”

Governor Mbah’s defection was formally announced during a press conference in Enugu, where he emphasized that the move was guided by a desire to align the state’s development goals with federal policies under the APC-led government.

Describing the switch as a “strategic move for visionary partnership,” Mbah said it would enable him to more effectively deliver transformational projects and inclusive development to the people of Enugu.

He was accompanied by his predecessor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, along with several state and federal lawmakers, during the announcement — signaling a broader political realignment within the state.

“The decision was not taken lightly,” Mbah said.

“It is about ensuring that Enugu is better positioned to benefit from national development efforts.”

Death Toll From Niger State Tanker Explosion Rises To 42, Residents Blame Neglected Road

The death toll from Tuesday’s petrol tanker explosion in Essa community, Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State, has risen to 42, with over 60 others injured.

The tragic incident occurred on October 21 when a fuel tanker lost control on the deteriorating Bida–Badeggi–Agaie Road, overturned, and exploded as residents attempted to scoop fuel from the scene.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the accident happened between 11:00 am and 12:00 noon.

The explosion claimed the lives of nine men, 24 women, and nine children, while dozens of others, including children, sustained varying degrees of burns.

Victims were rushed to Essa Primary Health Care Centre, Idris Private Hospital, and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Bida for treatment.

Grieving residents and community leaders blamed the poor condition of the road for the fatal crash. Ibrahim Gaawu, a local leader, called the highway a “death trap” and criticized both state and federal governments for years of neglect.

“This road was built in 1923 and hasn’t been properly reconstructed for decades, despite millions spent,” Gaawu said.

“We are pleading with the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu to urgently fix this road before more lives are lost.”

One eyewitness, Surajo Mohammed, said the explosion occurred shortly after the tanker tipped over.

He claimed the driver, frustrated by the fuel scooping, allegedly set the tanker on fire, triggering the blast.

“People rushed with jerrycans and buckets. Many were trapped in the flames. We’ve already buried 28 victims,” Mohammed recounted.

Emergency response teams, including the Police, DSS, FRSC, NSCDC, NEMA, and local volunteers, were deployed to the scene.

Hussaini Isah, Head of NEMA Operations for Niger and Kwara States, confirmed that search and rescue efforts were still ongoing as some families continued to search for missing loved ones.

Residents from Essa and neighboring communities have renewed calls for urgent rehabilitation of the Bida–Badeggi–Agaie Road, warning that continued government inaction could lead to even more tragedies.

Angry Youths Attack Politicians At Road Project Flag-Off As Others Scamper For Safety

Chaos broke out on Wednesday in Tarabu village, Kirikasamma Local Government Area of Jigawa State, as angry youths attacked top government officials during the flag-off ceremony of a road project led by Governor Umar Namadi Danmodi.

The event, which marked the commencement of a 23.4-kilometre road construction from Tarabu to Gafta, turned violent shortly after the ceremony.

Eyewitnesses reported that aggrieved youths pelted stones at the governor’s convoy and other official vehicles, damaging several cars, including those belonging to security personnel and senior government officials.

Among those who narrowly escaped unharmed were the Chairman of Kirikasamma LGA, Alhaji Muhammad Maji, and Hon. Abubakar Fulata, who represents Guri/Kirikasamma/Birniwa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Locals said the attack was aimed primarily at Hon. Fulata, who they accuse of neglecting his constituency and failing to deliver developmental projects, unlike his peers in neighboring areas.

In another disturbing event in the same community, a man known as Malam narrowly escaped lynching after he was allegedly caught trying to remove the eye of a corpse at a local cemetery.

A local resident who had gone to the cemetery to cut grass witnessed the act and quietly alerted others.

The suspect fled to the palace of the District Head of Kiri-Kasamma seeking refuge, but a crowd quickly formed and began to beat him. Security forces intervened and rescued the suspect, who is now in police custody for investigation.

Eyewitnesses said the angry mob also damaged the security vehicle used to transport the suspect.

The police have yet to issue an official statement, as attempts to reach the Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful.

In a related case, the Bauchi State Police Command reported the arrest of 17-year-old Auwalu Muhammad, who allegedly gouged out both eyes of his sister, Rukayya Muhammad, for a suspected money ritual.

The incident occurred on October 17 in Wailo, Ganjuwa Local Government Area.

According to police, the suspect lured his sister into the bush and mutilated her in a failed bid to acquire wealth.

UK Cuts Post‑Study Work Stay For Foreign Students

From January 2027, international students graduating in the UK will only be able to stay and seek a graduate‑level job for 18 months, a reduction from the current two‑year allowance.

The change, announced by the UK Home Secretary, forms part of the government’s broader immigration reform aimed at ensuring graduates swiftly move into employment and contribute meaningfully to the economy.

In addition to shortening the post‑study route, the UK is raising the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) paid by employers sponsoring skilled foreign workers by around 32%, and increasing language requirements for student visa candidates.

Critics argue this may reduce the UK’s attractiveness to international students and impact the higher‑education sector’s recruitment capacity.

Alleged Certificate Racketeering At Delta Polytechnic Under Investigation – Governing Council

The Governing Council of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku has confirmed that investigations are ongoing into claims of certificate and result racketeering at the institution.

The announcement came as the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) began a two‑week warning strike on Tuesday.

ASUP’s chairman, Dr Michael Ohana, said the alleged racketeering had tarnished the school’s reputation and disrupted academic activities.

In response, the Governing Council, through its Chairman Hon. Paul Adingwupu, called the strike a deliberate attempt to hinder investigations and accused the union leadership of being backed by interests opposed to reform.

The Council stated that the probe, which is also being supported by the State House of Assembly and initiated via the office of the Deputy Governor, covers alleged misconduct involving various senior officers, including the Rector and Registrar.

The union, meanwhile, says the institution’s integrity has been harmed and demands the release of detailed findings and action.

“Our mandate is to protect the institution and restore its integrity,” the Council said, while urging the public and the State Government to disregard what it described as “political posturing” by some parties.

INEC Must Bear Burden Of Proof In Election Petitions – Senate

Nigeria’s Senate has proposed a significant change to the country’s electoral legal framework that would shift the burden of proof in election petitions from candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This proposal came during the second reading of the Electoral Act Repeal and Enactment Bill, 2025 (SB. 903), which aims to overhaul the existing Electoral Act, 2022.

The new bill seeks to strengthen electoral integrity by making INEC directly accountable for the credibility of elections it conducts.

At Wednesday’s plenary, Senator Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa West) argued that INEC, as custodian of election materials and processes, should be required to prove that elections are free, fair and transparent, rather than shifting that responsibility to petitioners.

“We must move away from the principle that he who alleges must prove,” Dickson said.

“INEC should be made to demonstrate that elections were peacefully and transparently conducted.”

He also urged the National Assembly to empower INEC with the legal authority to expand the use of technology in elections and ensure it is adequately funded.

Senator Ekong Samson (Akwa Ibom South) supported the bill but stressed that poor enforcement, not the absence of laws, is the real problem with Nigeria’s electoral system.

He called on politicians to embrace integrity and treat their roles as a public trust.

Senator Muntari Dandutse (Katsina South) advocated for transferring the conduct of local government elections from State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) to INEC.

He also criticized political defections and called for a reduction in the number of registered political parties to no more than ten.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio endorsed the proposed reform, emphasizing that INEC should be held accountable for the elections it oversees.

“They are in charge of logistics and election materials,” he said.

“They must prove that the process complied with the law.”

Key highlights of the electoral bill;

– Burden of proof in election petitions may now fall on INEC.

– Mandatory use of technology, including electronic transmission of results.

– Legal backing for BVAS (Bi-modal Voter Accreditation System).

– Diaspora voting to be introduced for Nigerians living abroad.

– Creation of an Electoral Offences Commission to prosecute vote rigging and related crimes.

– Reforms to INEC’s structure and appointments to enhance independence.

Unlike previous piecemeal amendments, the 2025 bill proposes a full repeal and replacement of the existing electoral law, signaling a bold attempt to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
