Court Orders NMA To Assess Nnamdi Kanu’s Medical Fitness For Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to constitute a medical team to evaluate whether Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is medically fit to continue standing trial.

Justice James Omotosho issued the order on Thursday while ruling on an application filed by Kanu, who requested to be transferred to a private ward at the National Hospital for treatment of a reportedly life-threatening condition.

The court ordered the President of the NMA to set up a team comprising eight to ten medical professionals, including the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital or a representative.

The team is expected to assess Whether Kanu’s current health status justifies his transfer to the National Hospital, Whether the Department of State Services (DSS) possesses adequate medical facilities to manage his condition And whether his health challenges render him unfit to stand trial.

Justice Omotosho instructed that the medical report be signed by both the chairman and secretary of the medical team and filed with the court within eight days, starting from September 26, 2025.

This development follows arguments presented by Kanu’s lead counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), and prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).

Netanyahu Denies Gaza ‘Genocide’ And ‘Starvation’ Tactics In UN Speech

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly rejected accusations of genocide and the use of starvation as a weapon in Gaza during his address at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.

Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York, Netanyahu dismissed the allegations as “blood libels,” comparing them to anti-Semitic falsehoods from the Middle Ages.

“Those who peddle the blood libels of genocide against Israel are no better than those who peddled the blood libels against Jews in the Middle Ages,” he declared.

Netanyahu claimed that Israel had not only refrained from using starvation as a tactic but was actively providing food aid to Gaza’s population.

He emphasized that Israel’s military campaign was aimed at defeating Hamas, which he referred to as a “terror machine,” adding that his country had “crushed the bulk” of the group’s capabilities and aimed to complete the mission “as fast as possible.”

The Israeli leader also outlined what he described as a series of strategic victories over the past year, including operations targeting Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon.

Netanyahu’s speech sparked divided reactions inside the UN General Assembly hall. As he took the podium, the first speaker of the day, multiple delegations walked out in protest.

At the same time, supporters in the audience cheered, creating a polarized atmosphere in the chamber.

The event underlined the deep international divisions over Israel’s actions in Gaza, which have drawn both condemnation and support from different corners of the global community.

Tinubu Summons Former Rivers Sole Administrator Amid N254.37 Billion Probe

President Bola Tinubu has summoned Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), the immediate past sole administrator of Rivers State, to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, amid a growing probe into the state’s finances during the recently concluded emergency rule.

Sources confirmed that Ibas arrived at the State House around 5:50 p.m., dressed in native attire, and was accompanied by Finance Minister Wale Edun and EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede. Notably, Edun had earlier entered the Villa briefly, returning later with a file, highlighting the significance of the closed-door engagement.

Ibas officially ceased to act as administrator on September 17, when the six-month emergency rule imposed in March 2025 expired.

President Tinubu had previously ordered the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly.

At its first sitting post-emergency rule, the Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, moved to investigate the management of public funds under Ibas, focusing on expenditures from the Consolidated Revenue Fund and contract awards made during the interim administration.

While Ibas has publicly rejected the probe, asserting that his government acted within legal limits, financial records show that Rivers State received at least ₦254.37 billion from FAAC between March and August 2025—during his tenure.

The visit comes amid rising political tension in Rivers State, with speculation surrounding Governor Fubara’s possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has downplayed the possibility, it acknowledges the governor’s right to make political decisions.

Speaking on the matter, Rivers PDP Chairman Dr. Robinson Ewor said, “Whatever decision the governor takes is personal,” and noted he had not been formally informed of any defection plans.

Fueling the rumours further was the sighting of APC Governors’ Forum Chairman, Governor Hope Uzodimma, escorting Fubara into President Tinubu’s office earlier in the week.

Fubara’s recent statewide broadcast also raised eyebrows, as he failed to credit the PDP for its role during the political crisis, despite the fact that 11 PDP governors took the APC-led federal government to court in defense of democracy in Rivers State.

Reports also indicate that part of a peace agreement allegedly signed by Fubara in June included a commitment to join the APC, a move seen as key to consolidating Tinubu’s grip on Rivers ahead of the 2027 general election.

On the proposed probe of Ibas, PDP Chairman Ewor emphasized that while Rivers citizens didn’t elect the sole administrator, he is still accountable to the State Assembly, not the general public.

Meanwhile, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) has urged all political stakeholders in Rivers to avoid a fresh crisis.

Speaking during the 2nd ECOWAS Parliamentary Seminar in Port Harcourt, themed ‘Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Parliamentary Efficiency, Ethical Governance and Development in the ECOWAS Region’, Ndume stressed the importance of collaboration between the executive, legislature and judiciary.

“They must function together. You can’t have democracy without the legislature, executive, and judiciary working, each independently, but for the people,” Ndume said.

He also praised Governor Fubara for maintaining peace and stability during the emergency rule, describing his conduct as “mature and leadership-driven.”

Tuition Now Free In All Federal Technical Colleges, FG Declares

In a move aimed at expanding access to technical and vocational education, the Federal Government has announced that all students in Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) across the country will now enjoy tuition-free education, effective immediately.

The policy goes beyond tuition, covering a broad range of previously required fees.

These include costs for boarding, uniforms, textbooks, exercise books, prospectus, ID cards, stationery, medical care, clubs and societies, utilities, security, Skool Media, website/e-results, vocational training, extra lessons and insurance.

The announcement was made via a statement issued by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.

The ministry stressed that the decision aligns with the administration’s free education policy and is designed to ensure that technical colleges fulfill their mandate of producing skilled graduates to support Nigeria’s economic transformation.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, warned that no principal or administrator is allowed to impose unauthorized fees on students or parents.

He urged parents to report any illegal demands directly to the Ministry using the following hotlines 08036576733, 08036373796
📧 tse@education.gov.ng

The Minister also ordered that a circular reinforcing the policy be sent to all Federal Technical Colleges and communicated clearly to parents and guardians.

While the government will shoulder the cost of tuition and major charges, students particularly boarders, will still be responsible for their personal supplies.

These include: Religious attire (Sunday/Jum’at wear), Bathroom slippers, towels, bedsheets, pillowcases, Blankets, underwear, Cleaning materials, One ream of A4 paper (80gsm) for registration and part of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to Dr. Alausa, the initiative reflects President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a strategic tool for human capital development and national progress.

“No Nigerian child should be denied access to technical education because of illegal charges. By investing in education today, we are building a stronger, self-reliant Nigeria,” Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education

The Ministry assured that monitoring and enforcement mechanisms are already in place to detect and act on any breach of the policy.

FG Sets October 6 Deadline For Nationwide Academic Certificate Verification

The Federal Government has announced October 6, 2025 as the official start date for mandatory nationwide verification of academic certificates, part of a sweeping reform to eliminate certificate fraud and restore credibility to Nigeria’s education system.

This directive, outlined in a circular signed by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), was sent to all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), as well as public and private tertiary institutions.

The exercise will be managed through the National Credential Verification Service (NCVS), a digital verification platform under the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD).

Under the new policy, all existing and prospective staff of both public and private institutions must have their academic qualifications verified and cleared through the NCVS before their appointments or confirmations can be finalized.

Each verified certificate will be issued a National Credential Number (NCN) embedded with security features to prevent forgery and allow easy tracking.

The initiative is backed by Section 10(1) of the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act, 1985.

The NCVS was officially launched in March 2025 following approval by the Federal Executive Council.

At the launch, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described it as a “decisive move to end the era of fake degrees, diploma mills and forged academic records.”

“This verification system marks a major step in strengthening our education standards and protecting the value of legitimate qualifications,” Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education

Ms. Haula Galadima, Executive Director of Communication and Cybersecurity at NERD, confirmed on Wednesday that the platform is now fully functional and ready for onboarding by institutions and employers.

She called on all MDAs, universities, polytechnics, and private sector organizations to enrol their designated officers on the NERD portal.

“NERD is Nigeria’s official platform for academic digitisation. It safeguards national education integrity, enhances digital security, and strengthens our global academic credibility,” Haula Galadima, NERD Executive Director

NERD will issue digital identifiers such as National Student Number (NSN), National Credential Number (NCN) and National Document Number (NDN).

These will enable instant verification of degrees, diplomas, and certificates via a unified, secure platform.

The database will also support a National Resource Persons Registry, ensuring transparency in academic and professional credentials.

Galadima clarified that while the NCVS centralizes credential verification, it still preserves institutional independence, linking their databases into a secure national framework.

The reform is collaborative, involving all regulatory bodies and higher institutions in Nigeria.

The NERD Governing Council, chaired by the Minister of Education, includes members from National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Committee of Vice-Chancellors, Committee of Rectors, Committee of Provosts, National Library of Nigeria as well as Nigeria Data Protection Commission.

“With this system in place, fake credentials will no longer go unnoticed. Every certificate will be verifiable at the click of a button,” Haula Galadima.

The reform aims to eradicate academic fraud, enhance the reputation of Nigerian graduates globally and establish a credible, digital trail for all academic records issued in the country.

Denmark Closes Airports Twice Amid Drone Security Threat

Danish airports were forced to close twice within hours on Friday due to suspected drone sightings, in what the country’s leadership describes as part of ongoing “hybrid attacks” possibly linked to Russia.

Since Wednesday, drones have been spotted flying over multiple Danish airports, prompting prolonged closures including Copenhagen and Aalborg airports.

This activity follows similar incidents in Norway, Poland, Romania and a breach of Estonian airspace by Russian fighter jets, heightening tensions amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Denmark has been targeted by hybrid attacks over recent days,” Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a social media video on Thursday, warning that such drone operations “could increase.”

While investigators have yet to identify the perpetrators, Frederiksen singled out Russia as “the main threat to Europe’s security.”

Moscow denied involvement, labeling the claims a “staged provocation.”

Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard stated the drone flights aim “to spread fear, create division, and intimidate us.”

He announced plans to enhance Denmark’s capabilities to detect and neutralize drones.

On Friday, Denmark will join other EU nations, especially those bordering Russia, in discussions on proposals to build a defensive “anti-drone wall” in response to rising tensions.

Drones were reported over Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sonderborg airports, and Skrydstrup air base between Wednesday and early Thursday.

Aalborg Airport was closed for several hours on Wednesday and again for about an hour early Friday after new drone sightings.

North Jutland police chief Jesper Bojgaard Madsen said, “It was not possible to take down the drones, which flew over a large area for hours.”

Denmark’s military intelligence head Thomas Ahrenkiel told a press conference the source of the drones remains unknown.

However, intelligence chief Finn Borch warned that the risk of Russian sabotage in Denmark “is high.”

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the operation as “systematic” and “professional,” noting it occurred simultaneously in many locations.

He reassured the public that there was “no direct military threat” to Denmark.

Prime Minister Frederiksen has discussed the incidents with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

The government is considering invoking NATO’s Article 4, which allows urgent consultations when a member’s security or sovereignty is threatened.

French President Emmanuel Macron pledged support, saying France stands ready “to contribute to the security of Danish airspace.”

Investigations continue with cooperation from Danish intelligence and the armed forces.

The drone activity has unsettled some Danes. 85-year-old Birgit Larsen said, “I feel rather insecure. I live in a country that has been peaceful since 1945. I’m not used to thinking about war.”

Others took a more pragmatic view. 48-year-old Torsten Froling commented, “It’s probably Russia testing Europe’s borders, trying to provoke but not directly threaten.”

This surge in drone activity comes as Denmark announced plans to acquire long-range precision weapons for the first time, anticipating Russia will remain a significant security challenge for years ahead.

Tinubu As Intelligent And Strategic As Trump, Says Former NIIA DG

Prof. Bola Akinterinwa, former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), has praised President Bola Tinubu’s intelligence, caution and strategic approach, comparing him favorably to former U.S President Donald Trump despite Tinubu’s absence from this year’s United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Speaking on Channels Television on Friday, Akinterinwa emphasized that Tinubu’s decision not to attend the UNGA should not be seen as a sign of weakness or diminished global influence.

“When you are on equal footing with your counterparts, how can anyone claim Donald Trump is better than Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu? He is not,” Akinterinwa stated.

“Tinubu is as intelligent, if not more so, than Trump. He is more cautious and takes a more strategic approach.”

The former NIIA chief explained that diplomatic protocol plays a crucial role in determining leaders’ interactions at international forums.

“In diplomacy, water always finds its own level. A vice president attending such events cannot easily engage with leaders senior to him,” he said.

Akinterinwa also suggested that the dynamics of global politics, especially the attitudes of the United States, influence such interactions.

He described Trump as unpredictable and critical of countries that pursue independent foreign policies.

“Trump tends to act first and think later. He has been known to embarrass our president unnecessarily. Because Nigeria is charting an independent path in foreign affairs, Trump disapproves. He wants to maintain his image as the leading power in global politics,” Akinterinwa added.

President Tinubu attended the 78th UNGA in 2023 and delivered Nigeria’s national statement.

However, he skipped the 79th and 80th sessions in 2024 and 2025, respectively, sending Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria and deliver the national address on his behalf.

Kwankwaso Refutes Rumours Of Defection To APC

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has categorically denied reports suggesting he has submitted a letter expressing intent to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The denial came as a prompt response to widespread speculation early Friday that Kwankwaso, who also once served as Defence Minister, had initiated formal discussions with the APC and was in talks with the party’s National Chairman behind closed doors.

In a statement released by his media team and personally signed by Kwankwaso, he dismissed the rumours as baseless “online statements” lacking any factual foundation.

“We have become aware of some online claims suggesting that we have submitted a letter of intent to join a political party in the country,” the statement said.

“We wish to clarify that no such letter has been submitted to any party. The public is advised to rely on official channels for any future updates on this matter.”

The rumours have stirred considerable political conversation as the 2027 general elections loom, intensifying speculation about possible realignments in Nigeria’s complex political arena.

Earlier on Friday, sources within the APC reportedly claimed that Kwankwaso had discreetly reached out to the party’s national secretariat expressing interest in joining.

Additionally, reports indicated ongoing discussions between him and the APC leadership, which sparked significant attention on social media and within party circles.

Afenifere Demands Investigation Into Natasha’s Sexual Harassment Claims Against Akpabio

The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

This demand follows the recent decision by the Senate to lift Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension.

Afenifere stressed that the end of her suspension should not overshadow the need to uncover the truth behind her accusations.

In a statement released on Thursday, Afenifere’s National Organising Secretary, Kole Omololu, praised the Senate leadership for upholding the rule of law in recalling the senator.

“We commend Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Senate leadership for reinforcing the country’s commitment to the rule of law,” Omololu stated.

However, the group insisted that the senator’s serious allegations must not be overlooked.

“For over six months, where is the evidence supporting her grave claims?” Omololu questioned.

Afenifere urged relevant authorities including the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The group also referenced Natasha’s previous unproven sexual harassment claim against former presidential aide Reno Omokri, which was eventually settled out of court.

“Does this history not cast doubt on her current allegations against Akpabio?” Omololu asked.

Afenifere further criticised Akpoti-Uduaghan for publicising her claims via international media outlets such as BBC, CNN, Sky News, and Deutsche Welle, arguing that this damaged Nigeria’s image abroad.

The group also questioned her attendance at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) session in New York, suggesting that if she participated without proper nomination, it would reflect poorly on the integrity of Nigerian public institutions.

“If Natasha attended the IPU meeting without official nomination, it exposes manipulation of public offices for personal gain,” the statement added.

In March 2025, Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for six months following a confrontation in the Senate and her sexual harassment petition against Akpabio.

She alleged the incident occurred in December 2023, but the Senate Ethics Committee dismissed her complaint on procedural grounds.

Despite a court order restraining disciplinary actions, the Senate proceeded with her suspension, which included freezing her salary and barring her from official functions.

Akpoti-Uduaghan challenged the suspension in court, maintaining it was a retaliation for her allegations.

While the Senate cited misconduct as the reason for the suspension, the case gained international attention due to her media interviews abroad.

The issue remains unresolved, with Afenifere now urging federal agencies to investigate the claims.

Meanwhile, DAILY GAZETTE reports that Natasha resumed her duties at the National Assembly on October 7, 2025, immediately describing Akpabio as a dictator.
