Enugu Forest Guard To Recruit 5,000 As Nkanu West Council Boss, Hon. Ogbodo Leads Security Dialogue

The Executive Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area, Hon. John Chukwuma Ogbodo, on Tuesday hosted an interactive security engagement at the council headquarters.

The high-level meeting brought together the Commander of the Enugu State Forest Guard, Dr. Akinbayo O. Olasoji, traditional rulers, heads of security agencies and key community stakeholders from across the Enugu East Senatorial District.

The engagement focused on collaborative approaches to tackling rural insecurity, forest protection, and safeguarding emerging agricultural estates within the state.

Speaking during the session, Dr. Olasoji announced a bold plan to recruit between 2,000 and 5,000 new officers into the Enugu State Forest Guard.

He assured participants that the recruitment would be transparent, merit-based and in alignment with Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s vision of making Enugu the safest and most secure state in Nigeria.

He emphasized the Forest Guard’s growing role in combating threats such as illegal logging, banditry and land encroachment, and called for continued cooperation from communities and traditional institutions.

In his address, Hon. Ogbodo reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to security, particularly in protecting rural communities and agricultural investment zones.

He commended Governor Mbah for prioritizing security and supporting local government efforts in that direction.

“The safety of our people and the protection of our farmlands and emerging estates is a top priority,” Hon. Ogbodo said.

“We fully support the governor’s security vision and welcome the expansion of the Forest Guard.”

Also lending his voice, the Chairman of Isi-Uzo LGA, Barr. Obeagu, applauded the state government’s proactive security policies.

“Governor Mbah’s leadership has made Enugu safer and more secure,” he noted. “I commend Dr. Olasoji for his hands-on approach in mobilizing efforts to safeguard our forests and rural communities.”

The engagement had in attendance high-ranking security operatives, including representatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alabe, who serves as the Area Commander for Agbani, as well as the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of Agbani and Ozalla.

Other notable attendees include Barr. Onochie Igwesi, Barr. Chidi Ani, Rev. Okoye and Oz Nwobodo Agbo.

Others are councillors, supervisory councillors, town union presidents and a broad representation of stakeholders across the senatorial district.

Kim Jong Un Arrives Beijing Ahead Of WWII Anniversary Parade

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in Beijing on Tuesday aboard his signature olive-green armoured train, ahead of a major military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

His arrival, confirmed by both AFP reporters and South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, marks only his second known trip abroad in six years.

The visit signals deepening ties among North Korea, China, and Russia, as Kim is set to appear alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and leaders from over two dozen other countries.

The parade, scheduled for Wednesday at Tiananmen Square, will showcase China’s military strength through grand displays, including flyovers, precision marching, and advanced weaponry.

While specific systems remain undisclosed, observers have already spotted rumored new technology, such as a gigantic laser weapon.

Kim’s appearance at this high-profile event highlights what analysts see as a formal public alignment between Beijing, Moscow, and Pyongyang.

“Kim’s presence signals a growing trilateral partnership among these nations,” said Soo Kim, a former CIA analyst, speaking to AFP.

Photos released by North Korea’s KCNA showed Kim during the journey, smoking outside his train with top aides and smiling inside a lavish, wood-paneled carriage adorned with national symbols.

Beijing has undergone heightened security in preparation for the celebration.

Streets are lined with military personnel, white barricades, and patriotic art installations bearing the inscription “1945–2025.” Chinese flags flutter across neighborhoods, while parts of the city remain closed to the public.

The event wraps up a week of intense diplomacy for Xi, who hosted leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin earlier this week.

The summit, attended by Putin and other Eurasian leaders, underscored China’s push to build non-Western alliances and challenge U.S. influence.

At the summit, Xi condemned global “bullying”, a veiled criticism of the U.S, while Putin reiterated support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, blaming Western powers for the conflict.

Many of the SCO leaders, including Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, are expected to join Xi and Kim at the Wednesday parade.

Burkina Faso Criminalises Homosexuality, Imposes Stiff Penalties

Burkina Faso has officially passed a new law criminalising homosexuality, marking a significant shift in its legal stance on LGBTQ+ rights.

The country’s transitional, unelected parliament approved the legislation on Monday, following a draft family code earlier adopted by the cabinet.

Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala, speaking on state television, explained the implications of the new law.

“The law provides for a prison sentence of between two and five years as well as fines,” he said.

Bayala also stated that foreign nationals found guilty under the law would face deportation.

The legislation now awaits the formal signature of the country’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who seized power in 2022 after ousting Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Damiba. Traoré’s approval will make the law fully effective.

Before this change, Burkina Faso was among the few African countries that allowed same-sex relationships.

Unlike former British colonies that inherited anti-gay laws, Burkina Faso, once a French colony, did not have such laws at independence in 1960.

However, the nation remains deeply conservative and religious, with less than 10% of the population identifying as non-religious.

The move aligns Burkina Faso with similar legislation in neighbouring countries. Mali, also under military rule, criminalised homosexuality last year.

Nigeria has long enforced a strict ban, while Ghana passed a controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill that was never signed into law.

Uganda has implemented some of the harshest measures, including life sentences for consensual same-sex acts and the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality.”

International human rights organisations have criticised the growing wave of anti-LGBTQ+ laws across Africa.

The World Bank previously suspended loans to Uganda over similar legislation, although the ban was later lifted.

PDP Governors Push Back Against Wike’s Camp, Vow Party Won’t Tolerate Impunity

Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have issued a stern warning to the camp of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, stating that the party will not be swayed by arrogance or impunity.

During the inauguration of the National Convention Planning Committee on Tuesday, PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed affirmed their resolve to uphold party discipline and stand strong against any form of divisive behavior.

Reacting to demands issued by Wike’s camp ahead of the November 15–16 national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, Mohammed declared:

“We are not cowards, and we are not afraid of anybody.”

He further stressed the party’s resilience:

“We are capable of navigating this party beyond the shenanigans, beyond the arrogance, and beyond the impunity of others.”

Governor Mohammed underscored the collective responsibility of governors to safeguard the party:

“We cannot continue to take part and allow people to take us to the slaughterhouse. That’s our job. And our job is to make sure we don’t go to the slaughterhouse. And we are working as governors and working with the committee to ensure that. The keyword is discipline.

“We will no longer allow or tolerate anybody to take us for granted. It has to stop. Enough is enough. We are not going to tolerate it any longer.”

We Are Ready To Work With Governor Fubara, Says Rivers APC

As Governor Siminalayi Fubara prepares to resume office on September 18, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has signaled its willingness to collaborate with him, while affirming its ongoing right to critique his administration.

In a press briefing in Port Harcourt, State APC Chairman Chief Tony Okocha stated:

“The governor who was suspended will return to office on September 18. The APC will work with him when he returns.”

Okocha emphasized cooperation, adding:

“There are states where the governor and assembly members are in different parties, so we are going to work with him.”

He was quick to underline that this partnership does not negate the party’s oversight role:

“However, that will not take away our right to criticise him when he does wrong. But for us, the LG chairmen will work with him, except that we will not agree to vicious policies.”

Okocha contextualized the recent local government elections as groundwork for the 2027 general elections, saying:

“The Rivers State LG election is a prelude to what will happen in 2027.”

He explained the party’s strategic decisions:

“We did not field candidates in Obio/Akpor, Port Harcourt City, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGAs because we do not have the strength in those areas.”

Reflecting on progress since 2023, he expressed optimism:

“In 2023, APC in Rivers State had no shoes. Now we are wearing psychedelic shoes… We are going to double and redouble our membership for the President.”

Okocha also criticized the opposition:

“PDP is in tatters and people are leaving them in droves for other parties…and we’re privileged to have them.”

Fubara was suspended by President Tinubu in March following a state of emergency in Rivers, during which the president appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) as administrator.

On Saturday, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike remarked that with the conclusion of the local government polls, “the coast is now clear” for Fubara’s return.

JUST IN: Another Labour Party Rep Member Resigns

In another blow to the Labour Party (LP), a member of the House of Representatives, Nkemkanma Kama, representing Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State, has officially resigned from the party.

Kama announced his decision in a letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of the Labour Party in Amaze Ward, located in Ishiagu Community, Ivo Local Government Area.

The letter cited extensive consultations as the basis for his departure.

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Labour Party for the platform given to me to contest and win the last general election as the House of Representatives member under its banner,” Kama wrote.

He explained that the move came after engaging in wide-ranging discussions with his family, political allies, and supporters.

“After careful consideration,” he said, “I concluded that the step was necessary for the greater good of his people.”

Though Kama has not disclosed his next political destination, there is strong speculation that he may be heading to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

DAILY GAZETTE reports that Kama’s resignation follows an internal leadership crisis within the Labour Party that has seen several of its members defect to other political platforms in recent months.

Reps Deny Alleged Plot Against Speaker Abbas

The House of Representatives has debunked claims of a brewing rebellion among lawmakers targeting Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, ahead of the chamber’s resumption on September 23.

Reports had surfaced alleging that a faction of aggrieved lawmakers was mobilising to confront the Speaker over recruitment of 785 new staff and delays in constituency project funding.

The group reportedly expressed their dissatisfaction via a WhatsApp group, accusing the House leadership of sidelining members and exploiting their loyalty.

However, in a statement issued by House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the Green Chamber dismissed the narrative as “sensational and misleading.”

He clarified that informal chats among lawmakers especially on social media platforms, do not represent official positions or caucus decisions of the House.

“The House remains united under the leadership of Speaker Abbas. With 360 members representing Nigeria’s vast diversity, it is normal to have varying opinions, but these must not be mistaken for rebellion,” the statement read.

On the recruitment controversy, Rotimi clarified that the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), an independent statutory body was solely responsible for the hiring process.

He added that Speaker Abbas had already instructed the Committee on Public Service Matters to investigate the recruitment procedure and ensure transparency.

Lawmakers were also reported to have raised concerns over delays in implementing constituency projects, expressing fears that slow progress could impact their 2027 re-election chances.

Rotimi acknowledged the frustration but stressed that delayed contractor payments were a national issue, not unique to any individual legislator.

He said the Appropriations Committees are actively engaging the Finance Ministry to ensure that all pending 2024 obligations are met.

“Lawmakers face real pressure from constituents expecting results. But such concerns must be understood in the context of current fiscal realities, not turned into a political weapon,” he said.

The spokesman emphasized that the 10th Assembly remains focused and committed to addressing national priorities upon resumption later this month.

He also warned against divisive rhetoric suggesting that development or recruitment favoured one region over others.

“Allegations of regional favouritism are baseless and only serve to sow discord. The House works on principles of equity and national cohesion,” Rotimi asserted.

He reaffirmed the leadership’s dedication to transparency, fairness and inclusive governance, urging members to channel concerns through proper parliamentary channels.

Benue Govt Bans Graduation Parties For Kindergarten,  Primary Schools, Says No More Use Of Customized Textbooks, Exercise Books

The Benue State Government has officially banned graduation ceremonies for kindergarten, nursery, and primary school pupils across the state, citing financial pressure on parents and the need to realign focus toward academics.

Mrs. Helen Nambativ, the acting Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, announced the development on Tuesday in Makurdi.

She warned that schools that defy the directive risk sanctions, including temporary closure.

“This new education policy takes effect immediately and is aimed at cleaning up practices at the foundational levels of learning,” Nambativ said, adding that a task force will soon be set up to monitor and enforce compliance.

A government memo dated August 21 had earlier communicated the ban.

The directive is part of a broader push to reform the basic education sector by removing unnecessary financial demands on parents.

Key directives;

Graduation parties for pre-primary and primary levels are abolished.

Use of customised textbooks and exercise books, which prevent reuse by younger students, is banned.

Extended lessons after school hours are now optional and subject to parental consent.

Schools must return to the traditional system of book reuse, allowing students to pass books to their juniors.

The government emphasized that these changes were not only cost-saving but would also enhance academic discipline in early education.

While some school owners expressed concern over the abrupt rollout of the policy, others welcomed the move.

A proprietor in Makurdi, speaking anonymously, said the government should have consulted with education stakeholders before implementing such sweeping reforms.

“Many schools have already purchased the materials now banned. A one-year transition period would have been more practical,” the school head noted.

On the other hand, James Bemgba, a parent, applauded the policy, saying it would reduce unnecessary costs.

“It’s unreasonable to host elaborate parties and force parents to buy expensive materials for children barely three years old. This policy is a welcome relief,” Bemgba said.

The Benue government reiterated its intention to strictly enforce the directive starting from the 2025/2026 academic session, and warned that schools failing to comply may lose operating licenses.

Wike’s Allies List Demands Ahead Of PDP’s November Convention, Warn Of Fallout

Allies of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), operating under the name Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders, have issued a warning to the party’s leadership: the upcoming national convention in November will be deemed “invalid” unless their stated demands are met.

The group, which includes key political figures like former governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and PDP National Secretary Sam Anyanwu, met at Wike’s residence on Monday night to address what they described as growing internal concerns within the party.

After a closed-door meeting that lasted nearly three hours, the group released a communique read by Ortom.

They reaffirmed their commitment to equity, justice, inclusion and the rule of law, values they claim are foundational to the PDP’s identity and survival.

The group made several firm demands ahead of the convention:

  1. No Micro-Zoning:
While supporting the current zoning structure approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC), they rejected any form of micro-zoning, warning it could destabilize the party.
  2. Chairmanship to Remain in North-Central:
They insisted that the position of National Chairman must stay in the North-Central zone, as established in the 2021 zoning formula.
  3. Fresh Congresses:
    • They called for new, court-compliant congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra states.
    • They demanded a fresh South-East zonal congress be held.
    • The South-South congress in Calabar, already upheld by the court, should be respected.
    • The Ekiti State local government congress must be conducted without delay.

The group argued that failure to fulfill these demands would lead to the disenfranchisement of key party members, rendering the November convention legally and politically invalid.

The stakeholders stressed that leadership roles within the PDP should remain competitive, regionally balanced, and open to all, in line with the party’s traditions.

They warned that neglecting court rulings, sidelining legitimate members, or pushing narrow interests could severely damage the party’s unity and credibility.

“Unity cannot be built on exclusion or disregard for valid judicial pronouncements,” the communique stated.

They emphasized that a credible convention must be grounded in transparency, inclusiveness, and respect for the rule of law.

Despite the strong demands, the group reaffirmed their loyalty to the PDP and expressed a desire to work with all party organs to ensure the convention serves as a turning point for the opposition party.

“We remain committed to a united PDP—one that puts fairness above impunity and collective interest above individual ambition,” the group said.

They urged the party to take the November convention as a chance to rebuild trust and position itself as a true alternative for Nigerians.
