2027: Atiku Postpones ADC Membership Card Collection Over Rumours Of Jonathan’s Comeback

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has delayed his planned collection of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) membership card amid swirling rumors that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan might re-enter the 2027 presidential race, and ongoing talks between Jonathan and the ADC.

Atiku, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to internal disputes, was expected to formalize his defection to ADC in a ceremony scheduled for August 6 in his hometown, Jada, Adamawa State.

However, the event was postponed indefinitely without any official explanation.

The ADC Chairman in Adamawa, Shehu Yohana, told told journalists that Atiku postponed the reception to mid-August, though no exact date was given.

“From the way things are going, due to one issue or the other, the event may get to September,”

Yohana said, adding that Atiku is waiting on some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors planning to defect before his event.

Insiders at ADC hinted the delay could be linked to internal power struggles between Atiku and former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, who is said to have strong influence within ADC’s southern structures.

An unnamed national ADC source suggested that if things don’t favor Atiku soon, he might consider joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP), especially following the suspension of Kaduna’s former governor Nasir El-Rufai from SDP, an action believed to be connected to fears about Atiku’s possible return there.

Pressure from Atiku’s supporters within ADC to exit the party has grown amid rumors of Jonathan’s potential presidential comeback.

Sources confirmed ongoing discussions between ADC leaders and Jonathan, with a positive response so far.

“We are talking to him (Jonathan), and he is unlikely to contest under PDP. He knows the problems there,” a party insider said.

Although Jonathan’s wife, Patience Jonathan, publicly declared support for the current First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu and rejected any presidential ambitions for her husband, Jonathan’s campaign posters have appeared on social media linking him with prominent running mates.

Meanwhile, Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, dismissed the speculations and insisted Atiku is undeterred by rivals like Jonathan or Obi.

“Nothing has changed; Atiku registered as a member of ADC in Jada ward and the process continues. Atiku is a democrat who welcomes competition,” Ibe said.

Ibe emphasized that Atiku’s priority is building a credible alternative to the APC and that he will not be intimidated by anyone’s candidacy.

“The more the merrier, so Nigerians can make informed decisions,” he added.

On the other hand, an ADC insider accused the Tinubu-led APC of working covertly to sabotage Atiku’s ambitions and destabilize the ADC ahead of the elections.

“The only person they fear is Atiku Abubakar… They want a free ride in 2027 and fear Atiku’s presence on the ballot,” he explained.

He also downplayed Peter Obi’s chances in the PDP, noting that Nyesom Wike’s influence would prevent Obi from clinching the party ticket, saying the APC prefers Obi or other southerners as candidates to split votes.

The ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, reaffirmed the party’s resolve to resist all forms of sponsored attacks and stressed the importance of unseating the APC government in 2027.

Police Detention Propelled Me To Study Law – 71 Year-Old Babcock University Graduate

At 71 years old, Dr. Frederick Bolaji’s life journey has been nothing short of remarkable.

A native of Egbe in Kogi State, he’s a seasoned banker turned lawyer whose experience behind bars renewed a childhood dream and led him to earn a PhD from Babcock University.

In this exclusive interview with Grace Edema, he shares his inspiring story, from humble beginnings to banking leadership, wrongful detention and an enduring passion for law.

“I’m the second child in my family, from Egbe, a town known for its strong missionary heritage and the ECWA Hospital,” Dr. Bolaji begins.

His school journey was full of hurdles. Although initially admitted into the prestigious Egbe Secondary School, financial difficulties kept him at home for three years before he enrolled at the newly established Eruku Commercial Secondary School.

“There, we were literally pioneers, making blocks, fetching water, even farming to help build the school. It was tough, but it taught me resilience.”

Despite limited resources, he excelled academically, eventually proceeding to Kwara Polytechnic for his A-Levels and later earning a B.Sc. (Honours) in Economics from the University of Ibadan.

After his NYSC service in Kaduna State, Dr. Bolaji joined the International Bank for West Africa (later Afribank).

Over time, the bank underwent numerous transformations — becoming Mainstreet Bank, then Skye Bank, and now Polaris Bank.

He rose through the ranks to become Deputy General Manager, but growing unrest with leadership changes and questionable practices led him to retire voluntarily.

“Many young, inexperienced people suddenly got control and wealth in banking, some of whom I think need to be investigated. That environment was toxic, and I decided to leave on my own terms.”

Despite offers to stay, he chose to pursue something different.

While still at the bank, Dr. Bolaji had quietly enrolled at Lagos State University to study law, attending weekend classes.

“Law was always my first love,” he confesses, “but circumstances forced me to study economics instead. My father was a devout Christian who often warned me that ‘lawyers will not make heaven,’ so I avoided it early on.”

However, a dramatic event in his banking career changed everything. As a Branch Manager, he became embroiled in a scandal involving some foreign businessmen and bank directors.

Despite clear evidence of his innocence, he was arrested and detained at Alagbon Police Station for 65 days, sleeping on the bare floor.

“It was a case of being used as a scapegoat in an internal power struggle. That experience reignited my desire to study law seriously — I wanted to understand the system and fight injustice.”

Following his release, Dr. Bolaji doubled down on his legal studies, graduating in 2004 before attending Nigerian Law School in Abuja.

He returned briefly to the bank before retiring fully in 2006 to focus on law practice.

He later accepted a role as Executive Director at Bank PHB (now Keystone Bank) during the Central Bank of Nigeria’s interventions but stepped aside when the bank was sold to new investors.

Alongside law, he also completed professional qualifications as a Chartered Banker and Chartered Accountant.

Recently, Dr. Bolaji celebrated another milestone, earning a PhD from Babcock University.

“I only realized I was the oldest graduate on convocation day,” he laughs.

“There was another woman born the same year, but I was a few months older.”

He describes law as a practical and accessible field, dispelling myths about its complexity.

His disciplined reading routine includes waking at 2 a.m. to study, balancing work and academic life through careful scheduling.

Dr. Bolaji takes pride in Nigeria’s global achievements. “Nigerians are excelling everywhere, from healthcare to academia, music to technology. The key is discipline, consistency, and creating the right environment.”

Despite his impressive credentials, he remains humble and open.

“I’ve had calls from former colleagues abroad, and there are opportunities in international arbitration and foreign direct investment where I can contribute.”

He stressed that Nigerians are intelligent and capable, and with focus and hard work, there’s no limit to what they can achieve.

Excitement In Nsukka As Gov. Mbah Flags Off 5,000-Shop International Market, Commissions Key Infrastructure Projects

The ancient city of Nsukka came alive on Saturday as Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State officially flagged off the construction of the ambitious 5,000-shop Nsukka International Market, a major step in his administration’s drive to boost commerce and inclusive development across the state.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Mbah reiterated his commitment to carrying everyone along in the development process, especially those directly affected by government projects.

The Governor addressed ongoing concerns that former traders at the Ogige Market were being sidelined, stating that the allegations were politically motivated and untrue.

“This project has stirred emotions and, unfortunately, some have tried to twist the narrative,” Mbah said.

“Our intention is simple, to develop all parts of Enugu State equally. That’s why we are building modern transport terminals not only in Ogbete, Abakpa, and Gariki but also here in Nsukka.”

He emphasized that the development of the Nsukka Transport Terminal and the upcoming market are part of a broader vision to revamp the state’s transport and commercial infrastructure.

Governor Mbah set a clear timeline for the project’s completion, expressing optimism that the new market would be ready by end of 2025.

He also assured displaced traders from the former Ogige Market that they would be given priority in the allocation of shops in the new facility.

“We will complete the shops in four months, and those displaced by our development projects especially from Ogige will have the right of first refusal. That’s our commitment,” he stated.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Engr. Jude Asogwa, described the governor’s initiatives as transformational.

“From the modern transport terminal to this new international market, the development we’re witnessing under your leadership is unprecedented,” Asogwa said.

“I’ve already asked affected traders to come forward and register so they can reclaim their spots.”

Other key stakeholders also applauded the governor.

House of Reps member, Hon. Chidi Mark Obetta, State Assembly member Hon. Malachy Onyechi and Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, all commended Mbah’s commitment to regional development.

Prof. Ugwu further highlighted the N1 billion oxygen plant facilitated by the governor at the Nsukka General Hospital as another indicator of the administration’s impact in the zone.

The delegation assured Governor Mbah of Enugu North Zone’s full support ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Earlier in the day, Governor Mbah paid a courtesy visit to Igwe Samuel Asadu, Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council at his palace in Edem Ani.

Igwe Asadu and other traditional leaders, including Igwe Tony Ezema of Obimo, praised the governor for his inclusive policies and for facilitating the appointment of Prof. Simon Ortuanya as the first indigenous Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Rounding off his working visit, Mbah also commissioned the School of Health – Stadium – GRA – Secretariat – Prisons Ring Road, a major access route rehabilitated by Engr. Asogwa’s local government administration.

2027: Ambode Backs Tinubu’s Reelection, Dismisses ADC Governorship Rumours

Former Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has publicly declared unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign, while firmly denying any intention to contest for governor under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Reacting to reports linking him to a possible governorship bid on another party’s platform, Ambode described such claims as deliberate misinformation.

“I wish to publicly reaffirm my absolute and unshakable loyalty to the APC, the party under which I had the privilege of serving Lagos State as governor and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, my leader, mentor, and a tireless champion for Nigeria’s progress,” he said.

He emphasized his total commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing that his loyalty is not only enduring but resolute.

Lauding Tinubu’s leadership style, Ambode praised the president for driving forward key reforms across several sectors.

Describing Tinubu as a “proven achiever and result-oriented leader,” he commended ongoing federal efforts in areas like pension reform, student loan access, youth empowerment, and economic growth.

He also pointed to achievements in fuel supply stabilization, security improvement, and pro-people governance.

“His focus, determination, and inclusive governance style are delivering tangible results. Given another four years, Nigerians will have even greater reason to celebrate,” Ambode stated.

As 2027 draws closer and political activities intensify, Ambode urged members of the APC and the public to remain focused on the party’s mission.

“Let it be clear: I stand solidly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress. We will work together to ensure victory in 2027 and continue delivering the dividends of democracy,” he declared.

Encouraging the public to “ignore political distractions,” Ambode reaffirmed his intent to play an active role in ensuring the APC’s success at the polls.

Tinubu, Obasanjo, Northern Governors Mourn Late Audu Ogbeh

Late Audu Ogbeh,

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and governors from Nigeria’s northern region have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Audu Ogbeh, a former Minister of Agriculture and ex-chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who died at the age of 78.

In a statement issued Saturday, President Tinubu paid tribute to Ogbeh, describing him as a visionary patriot and staunch advocate of democracy.

He extended condolences to Ogbeh’s family, the people of Benue State, and the nation at large.

Tinubu acknowledged Ogbeh’s invaluable role in shaping national policies and his ability to provide practical solutions to Nigeria’s complex issues.

“Chief Audu Ogbeh was a patriot whose wisdom, dedication, and pursuit of progress left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape. He was always ready with facts and figures to support his propositions,” the president’s aide, Bayo Onanuga, said.

“The nation will sorely miss his insightful perspectives and wealth of experience.”

Similarly, former President Obasanjo expressed profound sadness and shock at Ogbeh’s death. He praised the late politician for his humility, patriotism, and lifelong dedication to democratic values.

“Chief Audu Ogbeh will be missed for his unwavering commitment to politics, governance and democracy, as he made significant contributions to the re-establishment of democracy in Nigeria.”

“His place will be very difficult to fill within his community, the State, the Party and the nation,” Obasanjo stated.

He described Ogbeh as “a peace-loving, unassuming, committed patriot and a firm believer in democracy and participatory governance,” noting that his political journey spanned from the military era into Nigeria’s current democratic dispensation.

The 19 governors from Northern Nigeria also issued a collective statement mourning Ogbeh’s loss.

Through their spokesperson, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa of Gombe State, they praised him as a respected figure and public servant who made lasting contributions to Nigeria’s development.

Ogbeh, they said, was “a towering political figure, a statesman of uncommon intellect, and an iconic son of Northern Nigeria who devoted his life to national development and public service.”

“An accomplished leader, a seasoned politician and a multifaceted scholar whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and development will remain etched in history,” Inuwa noted on behalf of the governors.

Also reacting to the news, the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Nenadi Usman, paid a heartfelt tribute to Ogbeh’s character and legacy.

She described him as a selfless public servant who consistently provided guidance and wisdom.

“On a personal note, I have lost a father and a mentor. From when I met him till his passing, Chief Ogbeh never wavered in his readiness to offer wise counsel and guidance whenever called upon,” she said.

“While we mourn this illustrious Nigerian, we must take solace in the fact that Chief Ogbeh lived a truly fulfilled life.”

2027: APC Will Not Offer Automatic Tickets To Defectors – Minister Nnaji

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has cautioned politicians seeking to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State that no one will be handed an automatic ticket or allowed to seize control of the party structure.

Speaking during an expanded stakeholders’ meeting in Enugu on Saturday, Nnaji addressed rising speculations about high-profile politicians aiming to join the party and possibly dominate its internal affairs.

He described these individuals as “politically displaced politicians” who, according to him, are lobbying in Abuja with hopes of hijacking APC in Enugu through unconventional means.

While he didn’t directly name anyone, his comments were widely interpreted as a veiled reference to Governor Peter Mbah, who is rumored to be considering joining the APC.

Nnaji made it clear that all new entrants would be required to go through the party’s nomination process.

“APC has come to stay; that is why from every nook and cranny, people want to join APC. And as we said earlier, we want people to come in, but we will not give them a free ticket; they must go to the contest,” he stated.

“Anybody who wants to run for the governorship of Enugu State, let him come to the APC, we will go to contest, we are waiting for them.”

“We want to populate the party, provided the person is going to look after the party when he gets in, we don’t have a problem.”

He went on to emphasize that no political figure, regardless of status, would be given preferential treatment.

“So, if the President of Nigeria wants to come and run for the governor of Enugu State, let him come, we will support him.”

“If the former governor of anywhere wants to join us, let him come; we will run the primaries. It will make it even easier, the primary will be the main election. So that when we finish with the primary, we know we have finished.”

Taking a swipe at the unnamed individuals considering defection, Nnaji added:

“But let me tell you, he will not enter, he is afraid, because there are too many IDPs in Enugu, Internally Displaced Politicians, many of them, they are partyless, they don’t have a party.”

“That’s why we are urging him to come, but he will not come. He is an internally displaced politician, he doesn’t have party, he is partyless, we want him to come, he will be running from pillar to post, until it is too late.”

He concluded with a note of confidence in the party’s direction and divine backing:

“But the good thing is that this our mission is being supported by the good Lord who created us, so we are heading to the government house.”

“This is part of the confusion that they will be seeing, that they will be meeting until it becomes too late for them. So, we have a focus, we know where we are going and we will keep going there.”

Nnaji also commended the leadership of the APC in Enugu State, particularly State Chairman Ugochukwu Agballah and the party’s executives from ward to state level, for their commitment and perseverance.

He promised that their dedication would not go unrewarded.

Meanwhile, three members of the House of Representatives who recently defected from the Labour Party; Hon. Sunday Umeha (Udi/Ezeagu), Hon. Chimobi Atu (Enugu North/Enugu South) and Hon. Prof. Paul Nnamchi pledged their loyalty and support to the APC, vowing to ensure the party’s victory across all levels in the 2027 elections.

Umeha recalled how he took the lead in defecting to the APC despite intense discouragement, later followed by Atu and Nnamchi.

He disclosed that additional lawmakers, including a senator, are expected to join the party soon.

Agballah affirmed that the party’s growth in Enugu State is largely due to Minister Nnaji’s personal commitment and financial support over the past year.

He urged party members to actively engage in the upcoming Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He also stressed the importance of voter card possession:

“There will be a primary in APC, there will be proper nomination in APC,” he stated, adding that by the end of August, attending ward meetings without a voter card would no longer be accepted.

Obi Backs Single Five-Year Term For Nigerian Presidency

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has proposed a single five-year term for the office of the Nigerian President, stating that the current system encourages distraction and undermines national development.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on Friday, Obi argued that the idea of a second-term bid has become a hindrance to focused leadership.

“I’ve said it and I want to say it again in this Government House that if I have the opportunity, we should stop having a second tenure for president,” Obi said.

He recommended the adoption of a five-year single term, similar to the system in South Korea, suggesting it would compel elected leaders to prioritise governance over politics.

“It should be five years straight, so that people can come in knowingly they have a job to do.
What people do now is to be president for one year and use the rest of the years thinking about their next tenure. We must stop it. Let’s face the real job, do your own and go,” he added.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Obi, a declared hopeful, promised that if elected, he would serve only a single term.

He also pledged to strengthen the political system by ensuring that political parties, not individuals, hold the real power.

“I want the party to be bigger than the president and the governors so that we can have orderliness,” he stated.

In response, Governor Bala Mohammed praised Obi’s stance and appealed for his return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), suggesting that the party remains Obi’s true political home.

“We want you to come back to the PDP. Please come back because that is where you belong.
We want you to be in the PDP, there are plans, desires and strategies,” the governor said.

Mohammed also emphasised the importance of unity among opposition parties, saying Nigerian politics must be driven by shared goals rather than ego and personal ambition.

“Politics in Nigeria cannot be done with ego, differences, and personal interest. We must harmonise our interests in the interest of Nigerians,” he concluded.

Niger Military Junta Nationalises Country’s Only Industrial Gold Mine Over “Serious Breaches” By Australian Operator

Niger’s military-led government has seized control of the country’s only industrial gold mine, accusing the Australian company managing it of failing to meet key obligations.

The junta, which has governed Niger since a 2023 coup, announced the nationalisation of Société des Mines du Liptako (SML) on Friday.

The mine, located near the River Niger, had been operated by McKinel Resources Limited since 2019 after the firm acquired a majority stake from a state-run entity.

Reading a presidential decree on state television, junta leader General Abdourahamane Tiani said the decision followed “serious breaches” by the Australian company, which had plunged the operation into financial distress.

“To safeguard this highly strategic company, the state of Niger has decided to nationalise SML,” the order stated, adding that the move aligned with President Tiani’s vision of ensuring full control of national resources by the Nigerien people.

Since taking office, Niger’s military rulers have pushed for greater sovereignty over natural assets, mirroring actions in neighbouring Burkina Faso and Mali.

In June 2025, the junta also took over the local uranium operations of French company Orano.

A 2023 report by the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative recorded 177 kilograms of gold from industrial production in Niger, with artisanal mining producing over 2.2 tonnes.

Officials say McKinel Resources failed to implement a promised $10 million investment plan, resulting in unpaid taxes, wage arrears, layoffs, growing debts, and disruptions in production.

The situation at the mine further deteriorated in May, when at least eight workers were killed in a bomb attack linked to jihadist insurgents in Tillaberi, the volatile western region where the mine is located.

The army has since deployed over 2,000 troops to combat extremists in the area.

BREAKING: Enugu Catholic Priest Fights Dirty With Women During August Meeting

A video making the rounds on social media has captured a dramatic confrontation between a Catholic priest and members of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) during their annual August meeting.

The incident reportedly occurred at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Idedu, located in Etiti Amokwe, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

In the footage obtained by DAILY GAZETTE, the priest is seen in a heated physical exchange with several women, as objects are thrown amid the chaos.

Witnesses described the scene as a “free-for-all,” with parishioners struggling to separate the clashing parties.

According to a Facebook post by Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, tensions erupted after the women allegedly refused the priest’s directive to hold their meeting at a different venue, specifically in Ibuzor.

The priest, reportedly angered by the defiance, attempted to disrupt the gathering, leading to the confrontation.

The priest fought and disrupted the women’s meeting simply because they refused to relocate the venue to Ibuzor,” Ugwuanyi wrote.

As the time of this report, the full circumstances surrounding the altercation remain unclear and no official statement has been released by the Catholic Diocese of Enugu or the parish involved.
