Police Detain Officers After Viral Assault Video Sparks Outrage

The Delta State Police Command has taken swift disciplinary action after a video surfaced showing police officers assaulting a man near Asaba Specialist Hospital.

The footage, which went viral across platforms including X (formerly Twitter), drew public condemnation for the officers’ “unprofessional conduct.”

In the video, the victim whose identity has yet to be confirmed is seen being beaten and dragged by uniformed personnel in broad daylight on Sunday, July 27, 2025.

Reacting to the incident, Commissioner of Police, Delta State, Olufemi Abaniwonda, ordered the immediate identification and arrest of the officers involved.

The police team was quickly traced and detained at the Command Headquarters, pending formal disciplinary proceedings.

“The officers were promptly identified and detained, pending the commencement of their orderly room trial, while their team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was issued a query.”

The CP strongly condemned the incident and reaffirmed the Command’s zero-tolerance policy toward abuse of power and human rights violations.

“The Delta State Police Command has condemned the assault of a yet-to-be-identified man by police officers in the state.”

“CP Abaniwonda stressed that the Command will not condone the trampling of citizens’ rights or tolerate assault and harassment by officers.”

In a statement issued by the Command, the CP gave assurances that the implicated officers would face consequences in line with police disciplinary codes and national law.

“He assured the public that the erring officers would be dealt with decisively, in accordance with the extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act and regulations, to serve as a deterrent to others.”

He further urged all personnel to conduct themselves responsibly, noting the importance of respecting constitutional rights while on duty.

“He urged all officers to uphold the tenets of professional policing and to discharge their duties with respect for the fundamental human rights of all citizens, in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).”

As investigations continue, the Commissioner called for public calm and trust in the disciplinary process.

“The CP expressed hope that the action taken against the erring officers would serve as a warning to others and appealed to the public to remain calm, assuring them that justice will be served.”

WAFCON: Tinubu Promises Grand Celebration For Super Falcons After Historic Victory

President Bola Tinubu has promised the Super Falcons a grand reception following their triumphant return from Morocco, where they clinched their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in stunning fashion.

On Saturday, the Nigerian team pulled off a remarkable comeback at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 and secure the 2024 championship.

Morocco initially dominated the game, with Ghizlane Chebbak, WAFCON’s top scorer, netting the opener in the 12th minute.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 24th minute through Sanaâ Mssoudy. But Nigeria rallied in the second half, with a spirited and determined performance that turned the match on its head.

Impressed by their resilience, President Tinubu held a video call with the players and officials to commend their achievement.

“As a team, we are very proud of you; the entire nation is proud of you. You lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy.
You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and the management of the team, including the ministers and officials,” he said.

“To set the record of victories for the 10th time is not a small feat for the country and the continent as a whole. Safe journey back home, enjoy yourselves and avoid injuries.”

The President gave special recognition to Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and won the Woman of the Tournament award.

He also praised Esther Okoronkwo for her pivotal role in the match, especially her cool-headed penalty in the 64th minute, which ignited Nigeria’s comeback.

He described her spot-kick as “very courageous.”

Okoronkwo went on to assist the second goal and delivered a well-placed free-kick that Jennifer Echegini converted, sealing the thrilling 3-2 win for Nigeria.

“Safe journey home, enjoy yourselves, avoid injuries, God bless you,” Tinubu added, as the players and officials responded enthusiastically with, “Thank you, Mr President!”

Speaking on behalf of the team, Ajibade expressed gratitude to the President for ensuring the players’ allowances were paid in full.

She said the squad looked forward to presenting the trophy to him in Abuja.

The call ended on a patriotic note with the national anthem and three emphatic chants of “Gbosa!” in honor of the President.

LP Unfazed By Defections, Says Faction Chair Nenadi Usman

The Labour Party’s factional National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, has dismissed concerns about recent defections from the party, affirming its resilience and continued relevance.

Speaking with journalists in Kaduna State on Saturday, Usman urged Nigerians not to lose confidence in the LP’s ability to offer a credible alternative to what she called the APC’s “rudderless and visionless” governance.

She emphasized, “The APC has failed Nigerians. The suffering of our people has never been this widespread or this severe.”

Addressing defections including members leaving LP to join the APC, Usman described the move as not only “morally indefensible” but also “legally questionable.” She voiced disappointment over members abandoning the party post-election, saying, “It is disheartening to see people jump ship after securing victory on one party’s platform, only to defect for selfish gain.”

Despite these departures, Usman remained confident about the party’s standing. She explained that the excitement created by the defections had clarified LP’s direction and fortified its internal unity.

She stated: “We made some mistakes in candidate selection, but those lessons have been learned. Going forward, we will be more deliberate in choosing those who genuinely align with our mission of building a new Nigeria.”

Governors’ Inaction On Death Warrants Encouraging Crime – Ex-Chief Judge

Former Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, Hon. Justice Ishaq Bello, has faulted state governors for failing to sign death warrants for inmates convicted of capital offences who have exhausted all legal avenues, stating that their inaction is fueling criminality across the country.

Speaking on Friday at the Nigeria Human Rights Conference held in Enugu, themed “The Right to Development, Rule of Law and Nigerian Dream,” Justice Bello argued that the refusal of governors to carry out this constitutional duty undermines the justice system and emboldens offenders.

“If you are a judge, a case comes before you; you hear it and fairly decide. If your decision is in civil matter, you will do the needful as the law requires of you. If it is criminal, you’re made conviction and if there’s any role for any governor, let him perform it,” he said.

Justice Bello emphasized that governors’ reluctance to sign death warrants is indirectly encouraging criminals and contributing to the breakdown of law and order.

“By refusing to fulfill their constitutional obligations as required by the law, they indirectly encourage the criminals in their atrocities,” he added.

Drawing from his experience as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Prison Reforms and Decongestion, Bello revealed that many inmates remain on death row for years due to governors’ failure to act.

He explained that signing death warrants is a critical component of the criminal justice process, not just to enforce the law but also to ease the burden on overcrowded prison facilities.

“Some governors have expressed humanitarian concerns, while others cite complexities in the legal system as reasons for not signing death warrants,” he noted.

However, Justice Bello maintained that these concerns often stem from a misunderstanding of their constitutional responsibilities, rather than flaws in the legal framework itself.

He also pushed back against comparisons between Nigeria’s criminal justice system and those in Western countries like the United Kingdom and the United States, stressing the vast differences in institutional capacity.

“What investment is done in the judiciary, in the police, among others? Wherever that is responsibility, there’s need for funding,” he said.

Electricity Tariffs Must Reflect Actual Industry Costs – Prof. Bart Nnaji Laments Nigeria’s Power Woes Despite Huge Gas Reserves

Prof. Bart Nnaji, Chairman of Geometric Power and former Minister of Power, has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges, despite being endowed with over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves, DAILY GAZETTE reports.

Speaking at the Orienta News Nigeria 2025 Conference held in Lagos, Nnaji described the situation as a troubling contradiction that reflects poor planning and underinvestment.

“It’s quite perplexing. We are a gas-rich country, yet we struggle to supply enough gas to our power plants. It’s a contradiction that many find hard to understand,” he said.

Highlighting the pricing concerns in the power sector, Nnaji noted that although the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority recently reduced the regulated domestic gas price from $2.42 to $2.13 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), generation companies (GenCos) often pay far more in the open market.

“Because most electricity is generated using gas, and GenCos depend heavily on sourcing this gas from the open market, the disparity between the regulated and actual prices continues to strain the sector,” he said.

He warned that this price mismatch has worsened liquidity problems, contributing to over N1 trillion in electricity subsidies in the first half of 2025, and a mounting debt the Federal Government owes GenCos.

According to Nnaji, the current pricing structure places an unrealistic burden on electricity providers.

“The energy charge component of the power tariff must be able to cover the cost of maintaining the assets. If operators can’t recover expenses for operations and maintenance, which are often dollar-denominated, there will be recurring system failures.”

He called on the government to allow electricity tariffs to reflect actual industry costs.

“The regulator must continue to adjust the tariff in line with actual industry costs to ensure sustainability,” he posited.

Nnaji also criticised the country’s lack of adequate investment in gas infrastructure, stressing that without improvements in gas production and pipeline transportation, efforts to boost power generation would remain futile.

“Nigeria has all the capacity it needs. Government should remain an enabler, but the private sector must take the lead. If we don’t produce enough gas, even promising initiatives like CNG adoption will not take off,” he stated.

He lamented the erratic operations of many gas-fired power plants, often hindered by inconsistent gas pressure and unreliable supply.

“Most gas-fired power plants in Nigeria suffer from erratic operations due to inconsistent gas pressure and supply,” he said, describing the situation as unacceptable in a nation blessed with abundant natural gas.

Nnaji also highlighted the broader economic potential of stable gas supply, suggesting that it could support industrial growth and energy diversification.

He called for enforceable Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and measures to curb vandalism and operational disruptions that often cripple the sector.

“Without a consistent gas supply and proper market design, we can’t expect PPAs to deliver,” he warned.

On Nigeria’s future energy mix, Nnaji maintained that gas would continue to be the mainstay of power generation over the next two decades, even as hydro and solar energy play supporting roles.

“Hydro power has its limits in Nigeria due to seasonal variability and geopolitical concerns, particularly as it depends on stable relationships with northern communities and neighbouring countries,” he added.

Governors Avoid Joining Coalition Due To Federal Intimidation, Says ADC Spokesman

At the third plenary session of the Northern Political Consultative Group (NPCG) held in Abuja, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), revealed why no serving governor has officially joined their coalition.

He explained that “no serving governor would be willing to cross over because of the intimidation that they are facing.”

Abdullahi spoke openly about the pressure governors are under, stating, “We know what they are doing to them. Some of them who cannot jump to their party are saying we are endorsing their presidential candidate. No problem. But what you are seeing is a conspiracy against the Nigerian people.”

Despite the pressure, he emphasized that the ADC remains inclusive, declaring, “The ADC welcomes everybody, but we are convinced that we are a movement that has the backing of the majority of Nigerians who are not happy with the direction this country is going.”

On the question of who would represent the ADC in 2027, Abdullahi noted that no candidate selection process has started.

“We don’t have any favourite aspirants or candidates. We are not having any conversation at the moment,” he said.

“Nobody has ever had any conversation about who will be the party’s flag bearer. We believe that it is too early in the day. Our focus now is to build a political party that is strong enough to deliver on the mission that we have set for ourselves.”

Earlier in the session, former SGF Babachir David Lawal reiterated the coalition’s commitment to supporting whichever candidate emerges from ADC’s electoral process.

“The ADC as a political party is a party that is founded on democratic principles. We are going to conduct congresses and conventions to elect our representatives at the election. And whoever emerges, be it North, South, Central, West, whoever emerges at either the congresses or at the convention, ADC will support it, and the Northern Political Consultative Group will support that decision.”

So far, political figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi have all expressed interest in contesting the ADC presidential ticket.

Despite that, Abdullahi emphasized, the coalition’s strength lies in its movement and message, not in its current roster of state governors.

2027: We Will Back Whoever Emerges As ADC Presidential Candidate – Babachir Lawal

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has declared that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will rally behind whomever emerges as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking to journalists after the third expanded session of the National Political Consultative Group (North) at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Lawal said the party remains committed to democratic principles in selecting its standard bearer.

“The ADC as a political party is a party that is founded on democratic principles. We are going to conduct congresses and conventions to elect our representatives at the election,” he said.

“And whoever emerges, be it North, South, Central, West, whoever emerges at either the congresses or at the convention, ADC will support it, and the Northern Political Consultative Group will support that decision.”

The remark comes amid the growing momentum behind the opposition coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, which recently adopted the ADC as its political platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming election.

Notable figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi (former Labour Party presidential candidate), Rotimi Amaechi (former Rivers governor), and Nasir El-Rufai (former Kaduna governor), have all shown interest in the ADC ticket.

When asked about the credibility of the electoral process and whether votes would truly matter in 2027, Lawal was emphatic:

“No one in ADC leadership or rank and file believes that votes do not count. Votes do count. And we are going to make sure that votes do count. This election, votes will count.”

“I tell you, forget about this fear that votes will not count. ADC is a party of Nigerians. ADC is one. Whatever techniques, whatever malicious activity they throw at us, we’ll counter it effectively. We will counter and defeat them at it.”

He noted that the session was convened to reflect on and respond to the security and development challenges confronting Northern Nigeria, and to deliberate on how best to prepare for the future.

According to Lawal, the current administration lacks the political will to address these concerns.

“As it is, we are of the opinion that this government has no interest in solving problems confronting the North, be it infrastructure, be it peace, be it security. So we have to take the ball in our hands and work towards achieving solutions to our problems.”

Police Arrest Two Soldiers, 19 Cultists In Ogun Midnight Hotel Raid

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 21 suspected cultists including two soldiers, during a midnight raid carried out at a hotel in Osiele, under the jurisdiction of the Odeda Police Division in Abeokuta, the state capital.

According to the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the operation was conducted in the early hours of Friday after the police received credible intelligence about a gathering of suspected cult members in the area.

Odutola revealed that the raid was executed by a joint task force comprising officers from the Odeda and Aregbe Divisions, along with operatives from the Anti-Cultism Unit and the SWAT team.

The team was led by Superintendent of Police Adejoh Israel.

She explained that the operation specifically targeted individuals believed to be associated with the Aiye confraternity, a notorious cult group known for its violent activities.

Among the items recovered during the raid were a cut-to-size locally fabricated firearm, a branded axe, and several blue berets — all of which are “commonly linked to cult-related activities,” according to police.

“The suspects have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Anti-Cultism Unit at Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation,” Odutola confirmed.
