Apologise To Tinubu Over Claims Of Regional Bias In Federal Projects – Umahi To Kwankwaso

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has called on former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to apologise to President Bola Tinubu over claims that the President has been focusing national development efforts disproportionately on the South.

Responding to Kwankwaso’s recent remarks, Umahi described the statement as misleading and urged Nigerians to disregard it.

“To my brother, Senator Kwankwaso, you owe our President Tinubu an apology and a duty to withdraw your statement using the information I have provided herein for the benefit of Nigerians and the unity of the nation,” Umahi said in a statement posted on X by Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga on Saturday.

“I request the good people of Nigeria to ignore Senator Kwankwaso’s misleading statement and know that President Tinubu is fairly committed to developing every part of this country with fairness, equity, and the fear of God.”

Umahi accused Kwankwaso of trying to stir division under the guise of regional advocacy.

“Senator Kwankwaso’s comment was made intentionally to deceive our brothers and sisters in the North and to pretend that he loves the North more than any other leader from the North,” he said.

“I consider Senator Kwankwaso’s statement as a statement made out of desperation and as part of his struggle with a few others who believe that they can inherit the impeccable legacy of our dear late President Muhammadu Buhari, and that the only way available for them towards achieving the same is to be divisive and pretentious.”

“Trying to be like our late President Buhari cannot be a job of three decades and cannot be done with deceit.”

The minister also highlighted several major infrastructure projects currently ongoing in the North as part of the Tinubu administration’s national development efforts.

“As of today, we have 258 km ongoing at Kebbi section and 120 km ongoing at the Sokoto section. The total ongoing is 378 km by six lanes or 756 km by three lanes in the North,” he said, referring to the 1,068km Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway.

He added that the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Road, a 439 km stretch, is being redesigned from flexible to rigid pavement to ensure durability, following the President’s directive and in line with other legacy projects.

“In the four legacy projects, the North has 52 per cent and the South 48 per cent. Within the ongoing projects as of today, the South has 409 km by three lanes and the North has 756 km by three lanes.”

He questioned why critics often overlook the scope of Northern projects.

“The facts are there. I wonder why people don’t talk about other legacy projects of Mr. President, but will always dwell on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. This road has only 220 km by three lanes in Lagos State, which is ongoing now.”

“Cross River and Akwa Ibom have 130 km by three lanes that is ongoing, whereas Kebbi alone has 316 km by three lanes that is ongoing. Sokoto has 240 km by three lanes that is ongoing. I think Senator Kwankwaso is not fair to Mr. President and the unity of our country.”

Summarizing his argument, Umahi insisted that President Tinubu has been fair in his distribution of development projects.

“I can say with all sense of responsibility that President Tinubu is a fair President. He has favoured the North in road development more than the South, especially the North West, where Senator Kwankwaso comes from,” he said.

Kwankwaso had made the controversial claim on Thursday during the Kano State Stakeholders’ Dialogue on the 2025 Constitutional Amendment, where he accused the federal government of sidelining the North in development matters.

“From the information available to us, it’s like most of the national budget is now tilting in one direction in this country,” Kwankwaso had said.

“Let me advise those who are struggling by all means to take everything to remember that some of the issues that we have in this part of the country today have to do with the lack of enough resources and mismanagement of the little that comes in.”

“That is why we have insecurity, we have poverty, and so on. It is happening here mainly, but like a desert, it would go everywhere.”

Darkness Looms As TCN Begins 25-Day Maintenance

Residents and businesses in Lagos and surrounding areas may face significant power disruptions starting Monday, July 28, as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) embarks on scheduled maintenance of the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line.

In a public notice issued on Friday, July 25, TCN announced that the maintenance will take place daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm lasting until Thursday, August 21, 2025.

The company warned of intermittent power supply and load shedding, stating:

“Customers may experience intermittent power supply and load shedding across our network due to the planned TCN outage.”

Although the notice did not specify which areas would be directly affected, the Omotosho–Ikeja West line is a critical supply route for much of Lagos and nearby regions, raising fears of widespread instability in electricity supply during the maintenance period.

TCN acknowledged the expected inconvenience, noting that the maintenance is essential for strengthening the performance and reliability of the national grid.

“We regret the inconvenience this may cause and appeal for customers’ understanding as we carry out this necessary upgrade,” the company said.

Court Remands TikToker Who Claimed Tinubu Died

A Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of social media influencer Ghali Isma’il at the Keffi Correctional Centre for allegedly publishing false claims about the health and death of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Isma’il, who was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), reportedly uploaded videos on his verified TikTok account (@bola_asiwaju) alleging that President Tinubu had died from a meal-related poisoning and serious illness.

According to court documents, the first count charge, titled “Publication of false news with intent to cause offence against public peace,” stated:

“That you, Ghali Ismail, Male, 29 years, of Jogana village, Gezawa LGA, Kano State, on or about July 20, 2025, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, did publish false information by uploading a video clip on your verified TikTok handle (‘bola-asiwaju’) wherein you falsely claimed that you reliably confirmed from official sources that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was critically ill, having been poisoned through his meal, with intent to cause public alarm and disturb public peace. You thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 418 of the Penal Code Act, Cap P3, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”

The second count, titled “Inciting disaffection to the government,” read:

“That you, Ghali Ismail… did publish false information… with intent to bring contempt or incite feelings of disaffection against the person of the President. You thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 416 of the Penal Code Act.”

After hearing submissions from both the DSS and the defence counsel, Magistrate Ekpeyong Iyang denied Isma’il’s bail application and ordered his remand. The case was adjourned until August 19, 2025.

Isma’il’s arraignment comes shortly after Professor Farooq Kperogi, a US-based journalism scholar, issued an apology for previously publishing a false claim that the late President Muhammadu Buhari and his wife, Aisha Buhari, had divorced before his passing.

The case also echoes recent developments involving Simon Ekpa, a Biafran separatist facing trial in Finland over terrorism-related charges.

Finnish prosecutors have accused Ekpa of using his online platforms to incite violence, with a six-year sentence being sought.

Ekpa, however, insists his posts were simply “content.”

Similarly, detained separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu recently told a Nigerian court that his controversial online broadcasts were meant as “jokes,” despite prosecutors linking them to widespread unrest and loss of lives.

Fubara Celebrates Wike’s National Honour, Lauds His Leadership Legacy

Suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has extended heartfelt congratulations to his predecessor and political mentor, Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on his latest academic honour.

Fubara, in a goodwill message issued on Saturday, praised Wike’s achievements following the conferment of a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by the University of Port Harcourt.

Describing Wike as a “visionary statesman” and “transformational leader,” Fubara said the recognition was well-deserved and underscored Wike’s legacy of excellence in public service and national development.

“On behalf of my family and the good people of Rivers State, I extend my warmest congratulations to the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), His Excellency, Chief (Barr.) Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, GSSRS, CON, on the conferment of the prestigious Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) Honoris Causa by the University of Port Harcourt,” Fubara stated.

The Governor emphasized that Wike’s commitment to infrastructure, governance, and education had earned him not only accolades but also the trust and admiration of many Nigerians.

“This distinguished recognition is not only a celebration of your illustrious accomplishments but a testament to your enduring impact, as a transformational leader, visionary statesman, and proud alumnus whose contributions have significantly advanced the cause of education and national development,” he said.

The statement comes shortly after Fubara and Wike reconciled, ending a prolonged political rift that had destabilized the state’s leadership and led to President Bola Tinubu’s intervention, which included the suspension of elected officials and declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Reflecting on Wike’s continued influence, Fubara noted:

“Your unwavering commitment to infrastructural development, both in Rivers State and now in the FCT, along with your legacy of service, has inspired renewed hope in governance and uplifted countless lives across the country. It is only fitting that your alma mater honours you for your outstanding dedication and the strategic role you continue to play in shaping Nigeria’s future.”

He concluded with warm wishes, adding: “We take immense pride in this remarkable milestone and join you in celebrating yet another feather to your cap. May this recognition fuel even greater accomplishments in your continued service to our nation.”

Join Politics, Use Your Intellect To Transform Nigeria – Cleric Urges Christians

Pastor Femi Emmanuel, Presiding Pastor of Livingspring Church and a senior chieftain of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), has called on Christians across Nigeria to actively participate in politics.

He emphasized that the Church possesses the numerical strength, intellectual capacity, and financial resources necessary to positively influence governance.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service to mark his 70th birthday at the church’s headquarters in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Emmanuel who is also a former Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly challenged Christian leaders to step beyond prayer and fasting to engage in the political process.

“Prayers and fasting alone cannot deliver Nigeria,” he said, urging Christians to leverage God-given tools to effect real change in the nation.

He noted that while divine intervention has long been sought, the Church must now act on the resources already provided.

“The Church has failed by assuming politics is dirty and leaving it to career politicians. That mindset is part of why the nation is where it is today,” Pastor Emmanuel declared.

He stressed the importance of grassroots political education and called on Christians to get involved in delegate systems and candidate selections, asserting that without participation, the Church’s voice would remain absent in national decisions.

The celebration drew an esteemed audience of political leaders, clerics, and Christian community members, all gathered to honor Pastor Emmanuel’s contributions to ministry and national development.

Among the dignitaries were former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) (represented by Bishop Olubunmi Banwo, National Chairman of the Bible Society of Nigeria), Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bishop David Oyedepo, PFN National President Bishop Francis Wale Oke, Emeritus Primate Sunday Ola Makinde, Dr. Supo Ayokunle, and former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung.

Governor Makinde praised the celebrant’s spiritual leadership and national vision:

“A rare leader whose spiritual insight and commitment to state and national transformation have touched countless lives.”

He lauded Pastor Emmanuel’s advocacy for moral governance, describing him as:

“A voice of reason and wisdom in turbulent times.”

Also speaking at the event, Solomon Dalung reflected on Emmanuel’s journey from politics to the pulpit:

“A fantastic Nigerian who once ventured into politics but was divinely redirected into God’s vineyard.”

Dalung praised Emmanuel as: “One of the most enduring and practical preachers of our time,”

While aligning with the pastor’s message by noting “Prayer without political action is not enough to change Nigeria.”

He encouraged Christians to step into political leadership and added:

“Pastor Emmanuel is a statesman in the pulpit,” recognizing his impact on national unity and discourse.

From the religious front, Bishop David Oyedepo, Presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide, praised Emmanuel’s legacy:

“Pastor Femi Emmanuel has been a torchbearer of truth and kingdom advancement. His legacy is one of courage, vision, and undiluted passion for souls.”

Similarly, Bishop Francis Wale Oke, General Overseer of The Sword of the Spirit Ministries and PFN President, described him as:

“A man of deep convictions and an unrelenting pursuit of God’s purpose.”

He commended Emmanuel for mentoring emerging leaders and urged younger pastors to emulate his example.

Speakers at the service recounted Emmanuel’s early career as a civil engineer, his time as a legislator, and his eventual emergence as a widely respected cleric and social commentator.

In his own remarks, Pastor Emmanuel expressed heartfelt gratitude:

“At 70, I am deeply humbled. I thank God for preserving my life, for growth in ministry, and for the grace to serve.”

Reflecting on his personal and spiritual journey, he added: “With Jesus Christ in my life, the journey became easier,”

Man Exhumes Grandmother’s Corpse For Money Ritual

In Niger State, police have apprehended 31-year-old Ahmadu Jiya of Gbafu via Enagi, along with four others, for allegedly exhuming his 90-year-old maternal grandmother’s corpse and removing her skull for money rituals.

The suspects, Mohammed Ndache (70) of Nagya, Edati; Abubakar Mohammed (21) of Duma via Lavun; Mallam Ali Mohammed (20) of Tsyaduka via Lemu; and Mohammed Adamu (25) of Edati, were arrested at a hotel in Bida, the headquarters of Gbako Local Government Area, following credible intelligence, according to the Niger State police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun.

“On July 19, 2025, acting on credible intelligence, police operatives arrested five suspects in a hotel in Bida with a human skull in their possession believed to be for ritual purposes,” Abiodun said.

During questioning, Jiya confessed he had dug up his grandmother’s remains, who died over two years ago, hoping to raise over N2 million to settle a debt.

“He said a herbalist, Mohammed Ndache had instructed him to bring a human head, dead or alive, for money ritual.”

“After retrieving the skull, he and a friend, Mohammed Adamu presented it to the herbalist. But upon hearing the conditions of the ritual, Jiya said he could not comply and returned home with the skull, hiding it in his house,” Abiodun explained.

Two years later, Adamu and Abubakar Mohammed approached Jiya, offering to purchase the skull.

Jiya agreed to sell it for N100,000 and received N40,000 as part payment before handing it over.

“The buyers took the skull to Ndache, who introduced them to another herbalist, Mallam Ali Mohammed, described as a ‘suspected money‑doubler.’ Mallam Ali allegedly demanded N500,000 to perform the ritual, which the group paid in installments.”

Following the ritual, Mallam Ali allegedly used a drum to perform the ceremony, instructing them not to open it until further notice. Weeks passed without word, prompting Adamu and Abubakar to confront him about a refund.

“Mallam Ali reportedly persuaded them to meet him at a hotel in Bida, claiming that he would deliver their money there. Ndache was also invited as the original link to the herbalist.”

“He said the suspects were all arrested at the hotel and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further investigation.”

The police confirmed that a discreet investigation is ongoing and assured the public that justice will be served.

Aliko Dangote Steps Down As Chairman Of Dangote Cement

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has officially retired from the Board of Directors of Dangote Cement Plc, effective July 25, 2025.

His retirement as Director and Chairman of the Board was confirmed in a statement issued Friday by the Group Chief, Branding & Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina.

The statement said Dangote stepped down to concentrate on other key ventures within his conglomerate including the Refinery, Petrochemicals, Fertiliser, and Government Relations as part of the company’s ambitious five-year growth plan.

To fill the leadership gap, the Board has appointed Emmanuel Ikazoboh, an independent non-executive director, as the new Chairman.

Additionally, Hajiya Mariya Aliko Dangote has been appointed to the Board, while Prof. Dorothy Ufot has retired.

“Reputed as Africa’s leading investor, Aliko Dangote leaves giant footprints as he retires from the board. His vision and tenacity redefined not just a company, but the entire cement industry landscape by becoming Africa’s largest cement producer and largest exporter of cement and clinker in Sub-Saharan Africa,” the statement noted.

Dangote’s journey into cement manufacturing began with a mission to make Nigeria and Africa self-sufficient.

Through massive investments in cutting-edge plants and local production, the company has surpassed that goal.

According to the company, Dangote Cement currently boasts a production capacity of 52 million tonnes per annum (Mta) across Africa, with Nigeria contributing 35.25Mta.

New plants underway in Côte d’Ivoire (3.0Mta) and Itori, Nigeria (6.0Mta) are expected to increase total capacity to 61.0Mta upon completion this year.

The company also reported record financial performance under Dangote’s leadership. For the first half of 2025, unaudited results show:

Revenue grew by 17.7% to ₦2.07 trillion, up from ₦1.76 trillion in the same period in 2024.

Group EBITDA surged by 41.8% to ₦944.9 billion, with Nigeria’s operations accounting for ₦845.4 billion, an 82.4% increase.

Profit before tax jumped 149% to ₦730 billion, and profit after tax soared by 174.1% to ₦520.5 billion.

Export volumes from Nigeria also rose 18.2%, with 18 successful clinker shipments to Ghana and Cameroon.

“Aliko Dangote’s legacy will be counted in the millions of jobs created, the infrastructure built, and the confidence restored in African industrial potential,” the company said.

The Dangote Group also emerged as Nigeria’s highest taxpayer in 2024, remitting over ₦402 billion in taxes.

In his acceptance speech, new Chairman Emmanuel Ikazoboh expressed gratitude and pledged to uphold the company’s legacy.

“I am truly honored to accept the role of Chairman of Dangote Cement Plc. My vision for the company is built on sustainable growth, operational efficiency, and an unwavering commitment to our core values.”

“We will focus on key priorities such as operational excellence, strategic expansion, sustainability, innovation, and community engagement.”

Ikazoboh brings vast experience to the role. He previously served as Group Chairman of Ecobank Transnational Inc. and began his professional career at Akintola Williams Deloitte, where he rose to become Managing Partner in West and Central Africa.

He was also appointed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2010 to oversee reforms at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS).
