The Federal High Court in Lagos has awarded ₦10 million in damages against the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for breaching the fundamental rights of #EndSARS protesters who were arrested during a peaceful memorial event.

Presiding over the case, Justice Musa Kakaki ruled on Thursday that the actions of the police were unlawful and constituted a violation of the protesters’ rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

The ruling stems from an incident on October 20, 2024, when protesters gathered at the Lekki Tollgate to mark the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS movement.

At least 20 demonstrators were arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, held in a police van for several hours, and later released without charge.

Court Orders Bauchi Govt To Pay N100m In Damages Over Rights Violation

The Federal High Court sitting in Bauchi has delivered a significant verdict against the Bauchi State Government, ordering it to pay N100 million in general and exemplary damages to the former Accountant General of the state, Dr. Saidu Abubakar.

The judgment, delivered by Justice Aminu Garba in suit number FHC/BAU/CS/43/2024, followed a fundamental rights enforcement application filed by Dr. Abubakar.

He alleged illegal arrest, harassment, intimidation, and detention by security agents said to be acting on instructions from the state government.

In addition to the financial compensation, the court directed that a public apology be published in two national newspapers and that formal notification of the apology be sent to Dr. Abubakar within 14 days of the July 1, 2025 judgment.

Justice Garba found that the actions of the respondents, including the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi, the Bauchi State Government, the State Security Service (SSS), the Attorney General of the State, and the State Public Complaint Commission, breached Dr. Abubakar’s rights as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

“Threat, intimidation, unlawful arrest and detention of the applicant by agents of the respondents with respect to his official duties and functions as Accountant General of Bauchi State is unconstitutional, illegal, unlawful, null and void, and a breach of the applicant’s fundamental Rights pursuant to sections 34(1), 35, 36, 41(1) and 46(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended); Articles 4, 5, 6 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act, Laws of Federation (LFN 2004).” the court held.

Justice Garba stressed that the agencies involved had no lawful authority to direct operatives to harass or detain the applicant without following the appropriate legal processes.

The court also ruled that Dr. Abubakar’s detention from September 9 to September 25, 2024, violated his constitutional rights to liberty, dignity, and freedom of movement. In the words of the judgment:

“The continuous detention of the applicant by the agents of the respondents without trial is illegal, null and void and a flagrant violation of his fundamental right pursuant to Section 35(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”

A perpetual injunction was also granted, restraining all respondents and their agents from further arresting, harassing, or detaining Dr. Abubakar in relation to his former role as Accountant General.

However, the court struck out the case against the State Security Service, the fourth respondent, citing insufficient evidence.

“An order is hereby made striking out the name of the 4th respondent as there is no any case established against them,” the court stated.

As at the time of this report, the Bauchi State Government has yet to respond to the court’s ruling.

Trump Accuses Obama Of ‘Treason,’ Demands Prosecution Over Russia Probe

U.S President, Donald Trump has reignited controversy by accusing his predecessor, Barack Obama, of “treason” and demanding his prosecution.

The accusation follows a contentious report released last week alleging that top Obama-era officials fabricated intelligence to frame Trump in connection with Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

During a press event at the White House with visiting Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Trump was asked who should be held accountable for the allegations.

He responded bluntly: “Based on what I read and I read pretty much, what you read, it would be President Obama. He started it.”

Trump’s statement follows the release of a report by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who has submitted criminal referrals to the U.S Department of Justice.

Gabbard’s report claims that officials under the Obama administration engaged in a “treasonous conspiracy” by allegedly manufacturing evidence about Russian interference to delegitimize Trump’s presidency.

“They laid the groundwork for what was essentially a years-long coup against President Trump,” Gabbard said.

Trump, who has long maintained that the Russia investigations were politically motivated, also named other top Obama-era officials as part of the alleged plot including then-Vice President Joe Biden, former FBI Director James Comey, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and former CIA Director John Brennan.

However, he reserved his harshest words for Obama, calling him the “leader of the gang.”

The accusations stand in stark contrast to the findings of multiple investigations conducted between 2019 and 2023.

Those investigations led by criminal, counterintelligence, and bipartisan congressional panels consistently concluded that Russia did interfere in the 2016 election with the intent to boost Trump’s chances.

A notable 2020 report from the Senate Intelligence Committee, then chaired by Marco Rubio (now serving as Trump’s Secretary of State), concluded that the Trump campaign actively sought to benefit from Russian cyberattacks and document leaks targeting the Democratic Party and candidate Hillary Clinton.

“It is our conclusion… that the Russian intelligence services’ assault on the integrity of the 2016 U.S. electoral process, and Trump and his associates’ participation in and enabling of this Russian activity, represents one of the single most

The Executive Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area, Hon. John Ogbodo, on Monday welcomed Florence Ifeanyi Aneke, State Coordinator of Civil Society for Malaria Prevention and Treatment, along with her team, on a critical advocacy visit focused on combating malaria in the region.

The visit, conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is part of a national initiative aimed at boosting malaria awareness, prevention and free treatment access in five selected states across Nigeria, with Enugu State being one of them.

Speaking during the event, Hon. Ogbodo praised the visiting team for their dedication, describing the mission as “not just a health campaign, but a lifeline.”

He emphasized the need for proactive collaboration in fighting malaria, which remains one of the leading causes of death, particularly among children and pregnant women.

He reassured the Civil Society group of his administration’s unwavering support, calling public health the foundation of any meaningful development.

Hon. Ogbodo also acknowledged Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, crediting him for Enugu’s inclusion in the select states chosen for this life-saving programme.

He encouraged the advocacy team to continue their grassroots sensitization, stressing that malaria treatment under the program is entirely free.

“Let our people know it doesn’t cost a kobo to stay alive. The treatment is free,” he added.

Among the key officials present at the meeting were Prince Onochie Igweshi, Secretary to Nkanu West LGA, Barr. Chidi Ani, Chief of Staff and Nicholas Aninwagu, Supervisor for Health, among others.

WHO Condemns Israeli Strikes On Health Facilities In Central Gaza

The World Health Organization (WHO) has strongly condemned Israeli military strikes on its facilities in central Gaza, saying the attacks have severely compromised its operations in the region.

The UN health agency reported that a staff residence in Deir al-Balah was hit during an Israeli raid on Monday, and that its main warehouse was also destroyed.

The WHO said the incident endangered staff and civilians, including children, who were sheltering on the premises.

It further claimed that two staff members and two family members were detained by Israeli troops, though three were later released.

One WHO staffer remains in custody, and the agency is demanding their immediate release.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed it detained several individuals in Deir al-Balah suspected of links to terrorism, adding that most were released after field interrogation.

The IDF maintained it had coordinated with international organizations and acted within the bounds of international law.

Meanwhile, the WHO reported that the staff residence came under fire three times, leading to a fire and major structural damage.

Women and children were reportedly forced to flee on foot, while men were handcuffed, stripped, interrogated, and screened at gunpoint.

“The WHO’s ability to operate in Gaza is now critically impaired,” the agency stated.

“This undermines already collapsing health systems and jeopardizes the survival of over two million people.”

It also noted that its warehouse was not only damaged but later looted by desperate civilians.

The Israeli ground offensive in Deir al-Balah, the first since the war began has displaced tens of thousands.

On Sunday, the Israeli military ordered the evacuation of six city blocks, telling an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 residents to flee south to the al-Mawasi area.

The UN humanitarian office confirmed its staff would remain in Deir al-Balah, citing that its facilities’ coordinates had been shared with Israeli authorities.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said that 33 people, including 12 children, died from malnutrition in just 48 hours.

The UN added that children and adults are showing increasing signs of hunger and disease, warning that “the last lifelines keeping people alive are collapsing.”

In northern Gaza, shelling killed at least 14 displaced people on Monday night in al-Shati refugee camp, while three people were killed in Deir al-Balah and two more died on Tuesday, according to local medics and Hamas’s civil defense unit.

A resident, Raed Bakr, described the aftermath of one strike:

“I felt like I was in a nightmare. Fire, dust, smoke, body parts flying through the air. The children were screaming.”

The UN estimates that nearly 88% of Gaza is now covered by Israeli evacuation orders or is considered militarized “no-go” zones.

This has forced 2.1 million people into a fraction of the territory, where infrastructure and basic services have largely collapsed.

The ongoing offensive has also affected journalists and medical personnel. In Rafah, a freelance photojournalist was killed and another injured when Israeli special forces arrested Dr. Marwan al-Hams, a senior health official.

Witnesses claimed Dr. Hams was injured during his detention.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed treating casualties at the scene but offered no further details.

Media outlets, including Channel 4 News, said they were trying to confirm the safety of local freelancers reporting for them.

UN human rights chief Volker Türk warned that the situation in Gaza is rapidly deteriorating, saying:

“Given the concentration of civilians in the area… the risks of unlawful killings and other serious violations of international humanitarian law are extremely high.”

Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called on Israel to allow international media access to Gaza, saying the world must be able to witness the crisis unfolding.

The Israeli military launched its campaign in Gaza following the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack that killed approximately 1,200 people in Israel and resulted in 251 hostages.

Since then, the Gaza health ministry says over 59,000 people have died in the enclave.

Reps Propose Ban On Politicians, Civil Servants From Using Private Hospitals, Schools

A bold new bill has made its way into Nigeria’s House of Representatives, seeking to bar public officials and civil servants including their families from using private schools and healthcare services.

The bill, which passed first reading on Tuesday, is being championed by Hon. Amobi Ogah, who represents the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State.

Ogah argues that the growing dependence of government officials on private and foreign institutions has significantly contributed to the decay of public facilities across the country.

Speaking to journalists after plenary, Ogah explained that the proposed legislation is designed to restore credibility and functionality to public institutions by compelling their biggest beneficiaries those in public office to rely on them.

“This bill intends to prohibit all public and civil servants, including their immediate family members, from patronising private schools and health care services in order to avoid conflict of interest, maintain public trust and ensure high, uncompromised standards and integrity of these public institutions,” he said.

He cited historical examples, noting that Nigeria’s founding leaders were products of public education, a standard that once set the foundation for national development.

“Before Nigeria attained independence… our foremost statesmen all had their education in government schools,” Ogah said.

“Sir Ahmadu Bello attended Sokoto Provincial School, Nnamdi Azikiwe went to Holy Trinity College and Christ Church School in Onitsha, while Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Alhaji Tafawa Balewa were also trained in government institutions.”

Ogah lamented the billions of naira and foreign currency spent annually on what he described as “medical and educational tourism” by Nigerian elites.

According to him, during the eight-year administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerians spent $29.29 billion on overseas medical treatment.

In 2023 alone, Nigeria spent $218.87 million on foreign education, while $38.17 million was spent between January and March 2024.

Meanwhile, the national budget for health in 2024 was pegged at ₦1.336 trillion, an amount Ogah described as insufficient when compared to what leaves the country for private and foreign services.

“Because of the patronage of private schools and health care facilities, our institutions of learning and medical care have become a shadow of themselves, with little or no infrastructural development and fallen standards of services,” he added.

He stressed that the removal of fuel subsidies and the ongoing economic reforms should be matched with equal commitment to reviving public institutions through responsible legislation.

“We must, of necessity, restore confidence in our government institutions… It does not speak well of our country that our presidents and top officials are seen going abroad for treatment and even dying in the process,” Ogah concluded.

The bill, while still in its early stages, is already generating national debate, as it seeks to reshape the relationship between public officials and the very institutions they govern.
