Ohanaeze Seeks Visa Ban On Edo Governor Over Threat To Obi

The youth arm of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, has condemned what it describes as a disturbing threat issued by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, against former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Governor Okpebholo reportedly warned on Friday that Obi should not visit Edo State without his express permission, stating that any visit outside his approval would come with consequences.

The remark has triggered widespread criticism across the country.

In a strong-worded statement titled “An Urgent Call for Action”, the National President of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, described the governor’s statement as an “assassination threat.”

“It is unbecoming of a sitting governor, and someone who was a parliamentarian, the main symbol of the country’s democracy,” Okwu said.

“We consider it reprehensible and utterly debasing that a sitting governor could publicly dish out this threat against an innocent citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Okwu added that the remarks pose a serious threat to Obi’s safety and demanded immediate intervention from the presidency and national security agencies.

“Let us make this loud and clear, the Edo governor’s threat against the life of Mr Peter Obi is considered an assassination threat, and we are not taking it lightly. Should anything happen to Mr Peter Obi, the entire world knows who to hold responsible,” he declared.

The youth leader called on President Bola Tinubu to speak out against the statement and caution Governor Okpebholo.

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youths Worldwide is calling on the Nigerian Government led by President Bola Tinubu to rise to the occasion and call the Edo State governor to order.”

“We urge the presidency to publicly condemn the governor’s action, as we know it is not in the character of Mr President to condone such behaviour.”

Okwu further linked Okpebholo’s comments to a growing trend of political intolerance, referencing a similar incident involving Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia.

“This reckless action was started by Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, a man who ordinarily by virtue of his vocation should be a father to all, but has been beclouded by political braggadocio. Now, his fellow APC governor has even issued worse threats.”

He called on security agencies including the police and DSS to ensure the safety of Peter Obi and all Nigerians across party lines, while also appealing to the international community.

“We call on the police hierarchy and the DSS to reassure not just Mr Peter Obi but all Nigerians of their safety in any part of the country.”

Okwu urged the United States, the United Kingdom, and other allies to impose visa bans on Governor Okpebholo, whom he accused of undemocratic tendencies.

“He has given himself out as an undemocratic element, one who is not ready to allow dissenting voices.”

“We consider this a threat against the entire Igbo race and not just Peter Obi. Why is it that every now and then, it is about Peter Obi? Is he the only opposition politician in Nigeria? Enough is enough!”

“It is, therefore, our appeal that the United States, the United Kingdom and all their allies should place an immediate visa ban on the governor of Edo State.”

He concluded by warning that unchecked political threats could endanger the 2027 general elections and Nigeria’s democratic stability.

“As Nigeria soon heads to the 2027 general elections, this will serve as a deterrent to others who may make provocative and inciting statements capable of derailing the country’s democracy.”

Anambra PDP Gov’ship Candidate Shot

Jude Ezenwafor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming Anambra governorship election, was reportedly shot by unknown assailants late Friday night in Abuja.

According to eyewitness sources, the attack occurred near Wuse 2 while Ezenwafor was returning home from a private engagement.

The PDP candidate, who emerged unopposed for the November 8, 2025 election, sustained serious injuries during the assault and was rushed to a private hospital.

Medical personnel at the facility are said to be preparing for emergency surgery to remove bullets lodged in his body.

Two individuals who were with Ezenwafor during the attack also suffered injuries and are currently receiving medical care.

At the time of reporting, the identities of the shooters remained unknown, and their motive is still unclear. Police authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

When contacted for comment, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said,

“I am not aware. I have not been informed.”

Within the PDP, sources expressed concern that the incident could disrupt the party’s campaign schedule, depending on the extent of Ezenwafor’s injuries and the timeline for his recovery.

2027: Obi To Leave ADC Coalition Over Ticket Concerns

As preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify, the South-South Emerging Leaders’ Forum (SELF) has raised concerns over former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, possibly pulling out of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

The group believes Obi is considering leaving the alliance due to fears he may not secure the presidential ticket.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Benjamin Kolowei, SELF claimed to have reliable information that Obi could abandon the ADC coalition in a move reminiscent of his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prior to its 2022 presidential primary.

The group warned that if Obi insists on pressuring the coalition to zone the presidential ticket to the South, it may provoke reactions from Northern political blocs, who could push back against what they see as Southern dominance of the presidency over the past 18 years.

SELF also questioned Obi’s reluctance to participate in competitive internal party elections under the ADC coalition, which is chaired by former Senate President David Mark.

They urged the ADC leadership not to succumb to regional pressures, but rather to allow all members to contest fairly.

“We note that Mr. Peter Obi and his Obedient movement, in recent times, have resorted to threatening and blackmailing the leadership of the coalition.”

“We make bold to tell the former Anambra governor that such strategy will not work, in fact, it has failed woefully,” the group said.

The forum further criticized Obi’s political history, suggesting he has repeatedly avoided primaries and sought uncontested tickets.

“Records have shown that Mr. Obi has a history of running away from primary elections, which is a major aspect of democratic culture.”

“If Mr. Obi claims to be a democrat, why is he always avoiding primary elections? Why is he looking for a free presidential ticket? He did that as a governor and, as recently as 2023, Mr. Obi abandoned PDP when it was time for the primary election.”

SELF emphasized its commitment to preserving democratic values and holding leaders accountable:

“As a forum of professionals and emerging leaders, we will not fold our hands and tolerate Peter Obi frustrating the ongoing arrangements to rescue our nation and have a credible alternative to the APC.”

The statement continued with a sharp rebuke of what the forum described as Obi’s self-righteous political posture:

“We hereby call on Mr. Peter Obi to stop his pretentious lifestyle, as if he is a saint or the only Messiah Nigeria is waiting for. If Mr. Obi wants to participate in a democratic contest, he should respect the rules of the game.”

“Though he has never fought for or contributed to the development of the democratic process in Nigeria, so he does not know what it takes.”

“Obi and his Obedients should learn early that democracy is about contest, not about free lunch or free ticket. It is not about blackmail.”

According to the forum, it has credible information that Obi may have already secured another political platform, which he could unveil soon:

“If Obi is looking for where he will be given a free presidential ticket, the door is open. Although we have gathered reliably that Mr. Obi has secured another platform, which he will soon unveil to contest in 2027, it is high time the leaders of the ADC coalition do not sleep with their two eyes closed.”

“We are making it public that Peter Obi is not ready to cooperate and work with coalition leaders.”

Nevertheless, SELF urged the ADC coalition to ensure transparency and fairness in its selection process:

“We are appealing that the ADC national leadership should ensure a credible and transparent primary election that will produce an acceptable candidate.”

“Whoever wins the primary should be supported by all. If it is Peter Obi, if he still remains in the coalition, he should not be denied the massive support.”

Ogun Workers Reject Abiodun’s Proposals, Vow To Sustain Strike Over N82bn Pension Deductions

Striking workers in Ogun State have rejected the proposals put forward by Governor Dapo Abiodun to resolve the ongoing industrial action sparked by unremitted contributory pension deductions totaling ₦82 billion over a 14-year period.

The rejection was made known in a communiqué issued by the organised labour, signed by representatives of 25 affiliated unions, following a seven-hour emergency meeting in Abeokuta on Friday.

The meeting commenced at 9 a.m. and ended around 4 p.m.

According to the communiqué, key concerns discussed during their meeting with Governor Abiodun on Thursday included the contributory pension scheme, new minimum wage and consequential adjustment, eight years of unpaid leave allowances, pension adjustments, and unresolved staff promotions for 2023 and 2024.

The labour leaders stated:

“Council-in-session at the emergency meeting that spanned seven hours, 9am to 4pm, discussed extensively on each of the items outlined above with in-depth evaluation of the offer(s) of the Ogun State Government on all.”

“However, it is expressly stated that the Council-in-session is displeased with the resolve of the state government on especially on item one, the Contributory pension Scheme.

“In effect, the initial position of the Congress subsists and the declared trade dispute as contained in the State Organised Labour letter of Monday, 14th July, 2025 stands.”

Despite this stance, Governor Abiodun maintained his administration’s commitment to resolving the crisis.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran, the governor revealed plans for immediate payment to workers retiring from July 2, 2025, under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

Abiodun explained that the government would adopt a phased payment model over a 10-year period:

“What is key is that we have decided that in phase one, we will pay outstanding contributions for retirees who have retired from July 2, 2025, to July 2030. We will make that immediate payment.

“Next year, we will make the second payment, which will be phase 2, for those who will be retiring from July 2, 2030, to July 1, 2035.
“We will be making immediate payments for those who will be retiring beyond my tenure in 2027 and beyond the tenure of my successor as well; that is, 10 years.”

He also announced the discontinuation of the gratuity scheme from July 2, 2025, with all consolidated salaries reverting to the CPS model.

“A lot of work has gone into this. In the past, we found that those who have been managing our pensions were not actually the right fit for the purpose; they were not qualified, and that has made things slower than they should have been,” he said.

“Anyone retiring will receive their benefits, and we will provide PENCOM with the resources to ensure that they meet the obligations of those who retire, and that will be done promptly. We will pass the appropriate laws to back this decision.”

The governor assured that the state would fast-track the enrollment of all employees under the CPS, once appropriate Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) are selected.

On outstanding benefits, he said:

“We have paid inherited leave allowances up to 2013, while the amounts from 2014 to 2022, totalling ₦8 billion, are yet to be paid but will be cleared in tranches.”

He further stated that ₦37 billion had been paid as gratuities to state and local government retirees, and ₦163 billion disbursed as pension to workers between 2019 and the present.

Abiodun also noted that six promotion exercises had taken place under his administration in the last five years, and that payments for 2023 and 2024 promotions would begin in September and December 2025, respectively.

The strike, which began on Monday, follows labour’s objection to the implementation of the 2013 Pension Amendment Law. The law moved the commencement date of the CPS to July 1, 2025, requiring both employers and employees to contribute 7.5% each of total monthly emoluments to be managed by PFAs.

Labour leaders claimed the scheme had been mismanaged for over 17 years, with only 34 out of 204 months’ worth of contributions remitted by both the state and local governments.

“In the last 14 years, and still counting, monthly deductions only from workers’ salaries have been diligently consistent without remittance to their PFAs!” the labour stated.

They further alleged that the scheme had become a tool for wage suppression and resource depletion.

“The statue-prescribed investments of the funds, the interests it could have yielded amongst other associated benefits are all in limbo! It simply translated to the apparent shortchanging of the entirety of active and dedicated workers of the State over the years.”

Organised labour insisted that unless the government fully addresses the irregularities in the CPS transparently, the scheme should be suspended and the previous pension structure reinstated.

Madueke Seals £52m Move From Chelsea To Arsenal

Arsenal have secured the signing of England winger Noni Madueke from Chelsea in a transfer deal valued at up to £52 million, marking their fourth acquisition of the summer and continuing a trend of players switching from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates.

The North London club confirmed on Friday that the deal includes an initial payment of £48.5 million, with a further £3.5 million in add-ons tied to performance-related clauses.

Madueke, 23, has agreed to a five-year contract, becoming the seventh Chelsea player in six years to join Arsenal.

Madueke, who made 92 appearances and scored 20 goals during his time at Chelsea, was signed from PSV Eindhoven in 2023 for £29 million.

Though capable of playing on both flanks, he is primarily deployed as a right winger.

His tenure at Chelsea included standout moments, notably contributions to the club’s UEFA Conference League title run and their Club World Cup triumph in the U.S.

However, his form remained inconsistent, with a hat-trick against Wolves on the opening day of last season proving a rare highlight.

Across 32 Premier League matches, he added just seven more goals and three assists.

The transfer has sparked mixed reactions, particularly among Arsenal fans.

Some questioned the necessity of acquiring another wide attacker, particularly one who might compete directly with Bukayo Saka for playing time.

A Sky Sports poll revealed that a majority of supporters disapproved of the deal, and a petition opposing the transfer has reportedly been circulating online.

Former Arsenal player and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson did not hold back in his criticism:

“If Arsenal went and bought any player from Chelsea, [Madueke] would have been the last one I thought they’d sign. He’s not consistent, and £52 million is a lot for a player who’s not a guaranteed starter.”

Merson also hinted at possible deeper motivations behind the move:

“Call me a cynic,” he said, “but is there another reason why they are doing this deal? Are there concerns about the future of Saka?”

Despite speculation, Arsenal have denied that the signing is linked to any potential departure of Saka. Club insiders insist the move is intended to bolster squad depth and foster healthy competition as Arsenal prepare to return to Champions League football.

On the Chelsea side, head coach Enzo Maresca addressed the transfer in his post-training press briefing:

> “Nobody told Noni he had to leave,” Maresca explained. “If he is happy, we are happy.”

Madueke now joins a growing list of players to make the direct switch from Chelsea to Arsenal, following the likes of Kai Havertz, Jorginho, and David Luiz.

He becomes part of Arsenal’s expanding summer recruitment, which already includes Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Norgaard.

Details regarding sell-on clauses or other conditional terms have not been made public by either club.

Niger Republic Onion Supply Eases Market Shortage, Set To Lower Prices In Nigeria

Nigerian consumers, especially households, food vendors, and caterers, may soon experience relief from the rising cost of onions, as large consignments from Niger Republic begin entering markets across the country.

Onions, essential in kitchens for their flavor, versatility, and health benefits such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, have seen a steep price hike in recent months.

Since March 2025, prices spiked by as much as 44% in Lagos and other major cities. A big bag that once cost ₦18,000 surged to ₦26,000, while the smaller variant climbed from ₦13,000 to ₦19,000.

Several factors were blamed for this increase, including seasonal changes, insecurity, rising input costs, and post-harvest losses.

A major contributor, however, was the decision by the Onion Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (OPMAN) to temporarily halt supply to the southern parts of the country, triggering scarcity and driving up prices.

Now, that trend may soon reverse. Information gathered from border regions indicates that truckloads of onions from Maradi and Zinder—two prominent agricultural zones in Niger Republic, are entering Nigeria through border towns such as Illela (Sokoto State), Jibiya, and Mai’adua (Katsina State).

From these points, local traders, commonly referred to as mallams, are transporting the onions to major markets in the south, including Mile 12 in Lagos, Onitsha in Anambra State, and Port Harcourt in Rivers State.

These imported onions, sources say, are often better preserved, well-dried, and visually appealing, traits that make them more desirable than the average Nigerian onions, which tend to suffer from poor post-harvest handling, particularly in dry seasons.

Confirming this trend, Lagos-based onion trader Yusuf Garba said:

“Last week, onions were too expensive. Now that these ones from Niger Republic have arrived, prices are beginning to come down.”

Garba also highlighted that the country typically faces such price spikes annually due to inadequate domestic supply.

> “Now that these ones from Niger Republic have arrived, prices are beginning to come down,” he reiterated.

While many in the agriculture and trade sectors welcome the renewed influx from Niger Republic as a stabilizing factor, others have voiced concerns about over-reliance on foreign sources. Stakeholders argue that Nigeria must improve its onion storage and drying techniques to ensure better self-sufficiency.

Another trader, Jubril Jega, noted that this year’s supply has been relatively smooth despite security challenges and occasional border issues.

> “For now, onions from Niger Republic will keep Nigeria’s kitchens busy and help families save money at the market,” he said.
“This year’s supply has been smoother as a result of good weather and cooperation between communities on both sides of the border.”

As truckloads continue to arrive, Nigerian markets are expected to see increased availability and a drop in onion prices, offering much-needed relief to traders and consumers alike.

Iran Executes Three Men Convicted Of Rape

Iranian authorities on Saturday executed three men in the northern city of Gorgan after they were found guilty of rape, according to the country’s judiciary.

Local judiciary chief Heydar Asiabi confirmed the executions, stating that the sentences were carried out early in the morning at Gorgan’s central prison.

The executions, as is customary in the Islamic Republic, were conducted by hanging at dawn.

“The death sentences of three men convicted of rape were carried out this morning in the prison of the northern city of Gorgan,” Asiabi was quoted as saying by Mizan Online, the judiciary’s official news outlet.

Asiabi noted that the men were part of a three-member gang arrested shortly after three women reported being raped.

He did not provide further details on the case or the identities of the convicts.

Iran, which has some of the strictest penal laws in the world, considers rape and murder capital offences.

It remains the second-highest executing country globally, after China, according to international human rights groups such as Amnesty International.

While most executions in Iran are carried out behind prison walls, public hangings are not uncommon.

Just earlier this month, Iranian authorities publicly executed a man convicted of raping and murdering a young girl, a case that sparked widespread public outrage.

Expecting LG Autonomy Under Current Constitution Is Unrealistic – Fashola

As debates over local government autonomy continue across Nigeria, former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has argued that expecting full autonomy for local councils under the present Constitution is unrealistic.

Speaking on Sunrise, a Channels Television programme aired on Saturday, Fashola, who also served as Minister of Power, Works and Housing, pointed out that the influence of state governments and state assemblies over local councils undermines the very concept of autonomy.

“I think that the debate we must have, debate we must have, is whether we really want autonomous local governments. It’s a debate that must be had. As it stands today, it is unrealistic to expect autonomy for local governments created by the Constitution,” he said.

Fashola explained that since state Houses of Assembly are empowered to make laws for local governments, this automatically imposes an external influence, contrary to the core idea of self-governance.

“They were not meant to be autonomous; that is my view after a very close reading of certain provisions of the Constitution. Some of those provisions provide, for example, that the local government in its economic activities and all of that will have laws made for it by the state House of Assembly.

“If you look at the legal and ordinary meaning of the word, autonomy, it suggests that you are acting independently without any outside influence and authority, and to that extent, a state House of Assembly making laws for what and how a local government can function is in itself an external influence that contradicts the idea of autonomy.”

He also identified land control as a practical constraint, noting that most responsibilities assigned to local councils, such as managing abattoirs, cemeteries, schools, and healthcare centres, require land, which is under the authority of state governments.

“The next thing, of course, is to look in the Fourth Schedule of the constitution and look at all of the responsibilities that are assigned to local governments… all of those responsibilities are dependent on one item, land.

“And to the extent that the state government controls land, which affects how the local governments will carry out these functions, I didn’t think that autonomy was intended. Now, if we decide that we want autonomous local governments, those are some of the things we have to free up if that is our decision.”

He added: “So we must have an agreement, but as it stands, I don’t think that autonomy was intended. What I think was intended was some sort of collaboration, some sort of supervision, some sort of an oversight of the state over the local government, and that is inherent in what you will find in Section 162, which deals with the state’s joint local government account.”

Fashola further explained that poor fiscal responsibility by many local councils in the early years of democracy led to the introduction of the state–local government joint account.

“And there’s history behind the enactment of that section because up till 1999, the local governments used to collect their money directly from the Federation account under a process that I think was known as JAAC, Joint Accounts and allocation or something.”

“But in the advent of the democratic era, it was found out that there were so many of them, or not a few of them, who had defaulted in the very basic obligation of paying staff salaries, primary healthcare workers, primary school teachers, salaries and pensions, and there was a backlog of debt, and I met some of that debt when I became Governor and we were working there.”

“And I think that is partly the history behind the creation of the state joint local government account to ensure that there was some supervision. Whether the supervisors have now become as culpable as those they were supervising is another narrative entirely.”

On the recent Supreme Court ruling which granted financial autonomy to local governments and barred governors from dissolving democratically elected councils, Fashola noted the mixed legal opinions on its constitutionality.

“No patriot would say that all was well with the state of local governments in Nigeria,” he said.

Still, he acknowledged that conducting local government elections was a step in the right direction towards improving their independence.

“The conduct of council elections was a good step towards making local governments independent.”

Police Capture Alleged Bandit Kingpin After 11-Year Search

The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 34-year-old suspected bandit leader, Mati Bagio, after more than a decade of evading capture by security forces.

According to a statement released by the command’s spokesman, DSP Mansir Hassan, Bagio, who hails from Unguwan Galadima in Shika District, Giwa Local Government Area had been on the police wanted list for 11 years due to his alleged role in leading a criminal syndicate that carried out coordinated attacks across parts of Kaduna and Katsina States.

“On 18th July, 2025, at about 0530 hours, acting on credible intelligence, a team of detectives led by the Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, CSP Sani Zuntu, successfully tracked and arrested a notorious gang leader popularly known as Mati Bagio, a 34-year-old male of Unguwan Galadima in Shika District, Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State,” the statement read.

Bagio is alleged to have masterminded and participated in several deadly assaults in Giwa, Hunkuyi, Faskari, Dandume, and Funtua Local Government Areas of both Kaduna and Katsina.

Kanu’s Fate To Be Decided October 10 After No-Case Submission

The Federal High Court in Abuja has set October 10 as the date to rule on the no-case submission filed by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Justice James Omotosho fixed the date after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence during Friday’s proceedings.

Leading the prosecution, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) urged the court to dismiss the no-case submission and compel Kanu to open his defence in the terrorism charges filed against him.

Awomolo argued that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to warrant a defence.

“The prosecution has supplied sufficient evidence in proof of all elements of the offences charged to warrant the court to call on the defendant to enter a defence,” he said.

According to Awomolo, the prosecution had called five witnesses and tendered numerous exhibits, including audio and video recordings in which Kanu admitted to leading IPOB, a proscribed group, and calling for violence.

“In both the video and audio evidence tendered by the prosecution, Kanu admitted being the leader of the IPOB, which he knew was a proscribed group,” he said.

He criticized the defence counsel’s argument that Kanu’s broadcasts were merely “boasting” and not grounds for criminal prosecution.

“Why would somebody say a terrorist, who boasted that security men and other people should be killed, should be allowed to go free?” Awomolo asked.

“Boasting is not the answer. If the defendant believes that he was merely joking and was a content creator, he should be made to answer to why he was boasting and creating fear in the mind of the people.”

“When a person is boasting and threatening death and violence, that cannot be said to be mere boasting.”

Awomolo stated that at least 170 security officials were killed as a result of the defendant’s inciting broadcasts.

“The aim of the defendant was to create a separate state of Biafra, and in the process not less than 170 security men were killed because of his boasting,” he said.

He further dismissed claims made by Kanu’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), that the IPOB leader had been in solitary confinement for 10 years.

“Kanu was first arrested in 2015, granted bail in 2017, and enjoyed the bail until 2022 when it was revoked for jumping bail. The current detention is based on a valid court order,” Awomolo said.

He accused the defence team of delaying the trial for three years.

“For three years, his counsel were responsible for the delay of trial. The delay had been the shenanigans of the defence team, not that of the prosecution,” he argued.

On the legality of IPOB’s proscription, Awomolo noted that the matter was pending before the Supreme Court and should not be deliberated by the trial court.

Defence Response: ‘It Was Just Boasting’

Responding, Kanu Agabi argued that the prosecution failed to prove any of the charges against his client. He dismissed the evidence as attempts to paint Kanu as a villain without substance.

“This man (Kanu) can boast. He was just boasting. He said I can bring the world to a standstill. I don’t see anything wrong with that. You don’t prosecute a man for mere boasting,” Agabi said.

He maintained that the prosecution presented no witnesses who testified to being incited by Kanu’s statements.

“No single element of the offences charged was proved by the prosecution,” he said.

Agabi also criticized the DSS’s role and the reliability of its witnesses:

“All the witnesses came from the DSS. That is why they kept saying I can’t remember; I am not aware because they did nothing,” he claimed.

He noted that during cross-examination, DSS witnesses used phrases such as “I don’t remember,” “I am not aware,” or “I do not know” over 80 times, failing to provide credible evidence.

“Memories have been lost, which is why most of the prosecution witnesses were saying they can’t remember, they don’t know, when they were asked questions,” he said.

He challenged the authenticity of the #EndSARS report and the death certificates tendered by the prosecution, noting that no doctors were brought for cross-examination.

Agabi further argued that Kanu had spent over six years in solitary confinement, violating international human rights standards:

“He is no longer normal on account of his solitary confinement. The case has been pending for 10 years,” he said.

He criticized the prosecution’s failure to respond to 10 out of 40 issues raised by the defence.

“If they (prosecution) failed to respond to one or two issues, it is enough for the court to acquit the defendant. But, in this case, the prosecution failed to respond to 10 issues raised by the defence.”

Agabi also insisted that the amendments to the charge sheet—now up to seven times—did not name any individuals allegedly incited by Kanu.

“The participation of the witnesses was not more than obtaining statements. The statements obtained from the defendant were not investigated,” he said.

On the issue of IPOB’s proscription, Agabi stated:

“Proscription does not lie without the President’s approval. We are saying there is no proscription, because there is no presidential approval; if they have it, they should bring it.”

He also argued that the court lacks jurisdiction over charges related to the allegedly imported transmitter, citing an earlier ruling by the Court of Appeal.

Justice Omotosho reserved ruling on the no-case submission until October 10, when he will determine whether Kanu must open his defence.
