Enugu Police Rescue Abducted Victim, Neutralise Kidnapper, Recover Firearm, Operational Vehicle

Enugu Police Commissioner, Giwa

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have successfully rescued a kidnapped victim and neutralised one of the suspected abductors during a daring operation in the early hours of Saturday, May 3, 2025.

The operation, carried out by personnel of the CP’s Monitoring Unit and the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad, also led to the recovery of a locally made double-barrelled pistol loaded with two live cartridges and a green Nissan Almeria used by the gang in the abduction.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the victim was kidnapped on May 2, 2025, around 9:00 pm in the Government Residential Area (GRA) of Enugu.

The suspects, operating in the Nissan vehicle, had abducted the victim in his Mercedes Jeep after firing sporadically to scare off passersby.

Upon receiving intelligence on the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, immediately deployed tactical and intelligence assets, directing operatives to ensure the victim’s safe rescue and the arrest of the culprits.

“The suspects had demanded a ransom of ₦20 million but managed to forcefully transfer ₦2.25 million from the victim’s account before the police closed in,” the statement revealed.

Acting on actionable intelligence, police operatives traced the gang to a valley hideout in the Ngwo area.

A gun duel ensued, resulting in the death of one of the kidnappers and the successful rescue of the victim.

The other suspects fled the scene and are currently being trailed.

While commending the operatives for their swift response and bravery, CP Giwa ordered an intensified manhunt for the fleeing gang members and the recovery of the victim’s stolen vehicle.

He reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring public safety, urging residents to continue supporting police efforts by providing useful information.

N80 Billion Fraud: I Served With Fear Of God, Ready To Defend My Record – Kyari

Mele Kyari, the former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), has stated that he carried out his duties with a deep sense of accountability and reverence for God.

Following a major leadership overhaul within the NNPCL, several reports have surfaced regarding alleged misconduct during his tenure.

One such report claimed that N80 billion was discovered in the account of a recently dismissed refinery Managing Director who served under Kyari.

Kyari’s successor, Bayo Ojulari, has initiated significant internal restructuring, which led to the dismissal of several individuals who previously held positions under the former GCEO.

Despite the circulating claims, including an online publication suggesting he had been taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kyari dismissed such reports as entirely false.

“Over the past few days and particularly in the past two hours, I have been inundated with calls from concerned family and friends over claims by an online newspaper that I was in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),” Kyari said.

“This is clear mischief and a calculated attempt by the newspaper and its sponsors to achieve a desired outcome, known only to them.”

He clarified that he is currently taking a break after the recent dissolution of the NNPCL’s management and board, which ended his leadership of the corporation.

”At present, I am taking a well-deserved rest after the dissolution of the management and board of the NNPCL, of which I was the Group Chief Executive.”

Reflecting on his long service, Kyari noted, ”It should be stated that, having served the NNPC and later the NNPCL for 34 years, 17 of those in management roles, and especially the last five years and nine months, I had little time for even a two-week leave.”

Expressing gratitude, he added, ”So, I am thankful for the opportunity to serve under Their Excellencies, Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Reinforcing his integrity, Kyari said, ”I must emphasize that I served with the fear of God, knowing fully well, as a Muslim, that if I do not account before man, I will surely account before Allah.”

“I am better off accounting to the institutions of man. Therefore, having served in public capacity, I am willing and happy to account for my stewardship in this world.”

He also cautioned against the potential harm that misinformation could cause to the country’s reputation, particularly among foreign investors.

“It is in this regard that I urge the media to be circumspect and avoid being stampeded into misleading the public with unverified stories or matters that require further validation by relevant authorities.”

Kyari expressed appreciation to those who reached out to him and assured that he remains open to scrutiny.

“I sincerely thank my family and friends who have reached out to me or tried to and assure them that I am available to respond to all lawful queries,” he concluded.

Boko Haram Attacks Nigerian Military Base, Kills Four Soldiers

At least four soldiers lost their lives when suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a surprise attack on the 27 Task Force Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Buni Yadi, located in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The deadly assault occurred around 2 a.m. on Saturday, just a day after the North East Governors Forum convened in Damaturu, the state capital, where they resolved to adopt a comprehensive strategy to address the insurgency plaguing the region.

A security operative who survived the incident recounted the harrowing experience, noting that the attackers arrived with heavy firepower.

“We were taken off guard by the heavy explosion and gunfire, but we stood our ground. A lot of our fighting equipment were destroyed during the encounter,” he said.

Confirming the development, the Nigerian Army posted a statement on its verified Facebook page on Saturday morning.

“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI currently in a fierce battle against ISWAP attack at Buni Gari, Yobe State. Details later,” the brief statement read.

As of the time this report was filed, the military had not provided further information on the extent of casualties or damage.

Buni Yadi is approximately 65 kilometers from Damaturu and is the hometown of the sitting governor, Mai Mala Buni.

Residents in the area have been left terrified, with many fleeing to the local government headquarters for safety.

“The military had shut down vehicular movement on the busy road, which serves as a link between Yobe and Biu and other towns in southern Borno,” a local resident said.

This latest strike follows a similar attack two weeks ago, when insurgents stormed a military location in the Chalie area of Buni Yadi, killing three soldiers.

Communities across Borno State have been facing consistent threats in recent months, with armed groups targeting villages and military installations.

In areas like Sabon Gari, Wajiroko, and Wulgo, the insurgents have reportedly overpowered troops, looting weapons and ammunition in the process.

Concerned by the persistent insecurity, Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the Shehu of Borno, Senator Ali Ndume, and other key stakeholders have called on the federal government to take decisive action to stem the violence.

432 Aspirants Battle For APC Chairmanship Tickets Ahead Of Lagos LG Polls

In preparation for the July 12 Local Government Election in Lagos State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that 432 aspirants will participate in its upcoming chairmanship primaries scheduled for next Saturday.

This follows the conclusion of the party’s screening exercise, which took place between Tuesday, April 29, and Friday, May 3, at the APC Secretariat on Acme Road, Ogba.

Out of the 470 aspirants screened, 432 were cleared by the electoral committee to contest across the 20 local governments and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs).

The party disclosed that “38 other aspirants were either disqualified or they voluntarily withdrew from the race.”

A breakdown of the aspirants shows that the overwhelming majority are male, with 411 men and 59 women vying for the tickets.

An internal assessment revealed that Amuwo-Odofin topped the list with 20 cleared aspirants, followed closely by Shomolu with 18.

Other LGAs with high numbers include Apapa-Iganmu (16), Bariga LCDA (15), Ikorodu Central (15), and Yaba (14).

Additional LGAs such as Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, and Badagry Central each had 13 aspirants cleared.

In contrast, some councils had minimal competition.

“Iba, Ijede, Oto-Awori and Lekki and Surulere had one aspirant each cleared to contest unopposed,” a party source confirmed.

In Agege Local Government, the absence of AbdulGaniyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, was noted.

“AbdulGaniyu Obasa did not show up for the screening as seven aspirants were cleared to contest,” the source added.

According to the party’s earlier released guidelines, indirect primaries will be conducted.

“Executive members across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) would vote on May 10,” the statement read.

It was further gathered that elections will proceed only in councils where consensus candidates fail to emerge.

The party also outlined an appeals process for disqualified aspirants: “Disqualified aspirants have an opportunity to file an appeal between Sunday, May 4 and Monday, May 5. Those who wish to contest the outcome of the primaries can submit petitions to the Appeal Committee between May 12 and 13.”

Interpreter’s Absence Halts Trial Of Ex-Power Minister Over Alleged Money Laundering

The ongoing trial of former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, at the Federal High Court in Abuja was stalled on Friday due to the unavailability of a court interpreter.

The matter, which was slated for continuation of a trial-within-trial, could not proceed as planned.

Prosecution counsel, A. O. Mohammed Esq, informed the court that he was unable to secure the services of an interpreter.

“He was informed that the official interpreter of the court was on an official engagement,” Mohammed told the court.

He therefore requested a short adjournment, citing the importance of having an interpreter present for the proceedings.

In response, defence counsel Emmanuel Hassan Esq raised no objection to the oral application made by the prosecution.

Following the submissions, Justice James Omotosho adjourned the trial to May 8 and 9 for further hearing.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Mamman on a 12-count charge, which includes conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Enugu Council Chairman, Hon. Ogbodo Rallies Support For Polio Vaccination, Reaffirms Commitment To Children’s Well-being

The Executive Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area, Hon. John Ogbodo, has thrown his full weight behind the ongoing polio vaccination campaign, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the health and well-being of children in the area.

During a supervisory visit to vaccination sites across the council, Hon. Ogbodo commended the dedication and resilience of the health workers leading the charge against polio.

He urged them to ensure no child is left behind, stressing the need for total coverage across all communities, including hard-to-reach areas.

In a bid to bolster the campaign’s effectiveness, the Chairman announced plans to provide additional logistics support to the vaccination teams.

This, he said, would ensure unhindered access to remote villages and settlements, thereby improving coverage and outcomes.

“The health of our children is non-negotiable. We are fully committed to supporting this campaign until every eligible child in Nkanu West is protected from polio” he declared.

The vaccination exercise has so far recorded significant progress, with enthusiastic support from local residents who recognize the life-saving importance of the initiative

Rivers Crisis: Sponsored Walkout On Administrator’s Wife Will Only Worsen Your Situation – Wike Slams Fubara

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has denounced the walkout staged by a group of women loyal to suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara during an event for First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The incident occurred on Friday at the Renewed Hope Initiative empowerment programme held at the EUI Event Centre in GRA, Port Harcourt.

In a statement delivered by Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike offered an apology to both the First Lady and President Bola Tinubu on behalf of the people of Rivers State.

He called the action “an embarrassment to the people of Rivers State,” emphasising that “insult on anyone representing the First Lady of Nigeria in an event is a direct insult on the office of the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Olayinka explained that the women leading the demonstration included some former Local Government Vice Chairmen, and that the programme was intended “to benefit 500 women in the state with various empowerment items.”

Though Wike was in China on official duties, he described the walkout as “very disturbing and embarrassing,” and warned Fubara’s supporters to “desist from ridiculing the state.”

He urged the suspended governor to be forthright with President Tinubu about his grievances, stating, “It is not enough to be visiting people to plead for peace. Those who genuinely want peace work and act for it.”

Wike challenged the sincerity of Fubara’s camp: “These are the same people pleading for peace, but at the same time doing things that are contrary to what they are pleading for. How can you say you want peace and at the same time, you are sponsoring people to insult everyone, including the president and his wife?”

“All those shenanigans won’t bring peace, and I am sure they know that, because they are not sincere with their up and down pleadings for peace.”

“As for me and those who subscribe to my leadership, we condemn in totality that yesterday’s show of shame and we apologise to our First Lady for the embarrassing conduct of those few women who do not represent the characters and ideals of the people of Rivers State.”

Soludo Bankrolling Ukachukwu To Undermine APC In Anambra, Ozigbo Alleges

Governor Soludo,

Valentine Ozigbo, who narrowly lost the All Progressives Congress governorship primary in Anambra State, has accused Governor Chukwuma Soludo of secretly funding Senator Nicholas Ukachukwu’s campaign in order to hobble the party’s chances come November 8, 2025.

Ukachukwu secured the APC’s ticket with 1,455 votes at the April 5 primary; Ozigbo trailed with just 67.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Ozigbo claimed that Soludo, the APGA governor, met privately with him before the primary to encourage him to step aside, but then redirected resources to Ukachukwu once he refused.

“Let me make yet another allegation: Soludo is funding Nicholas to weaken the APC. And the only way we can prove this is to invite us to your show and bring a Bible to swear, because these things can’t be easily evidenced,” Ozigbo declared.

Asked if he’d congratulated Ukachukwu, Ozigbo replied, “If it was a semblance of a proper primary, I would have congratulated him. We haven’t spoken. Why would I congratulate?”

Ozigbo went on to recall his own clash with Soludo in 2021.

“I defeated Soludo in 2021. He knows why he is scared of me becoming a candidate, but I was rigged out. I have it on good authority, based on what I discovered long after it happened,” he said.

“I called Soludo back then, congratulated him and moved on, without going to court. But in this case, the wrong is so severe that I’m asking myself, should I allow this impunity to continue?”

“No. I will engage further with the party leadership. Let them convince me this shouldn’t be happening.”

Soludo has not publicly responded to Ozigbo’s latest accusations.

Meanwhile, Ozigbo questioned Ukachukwu’s track record: “Who is Nicholas Ukachukwu? How come he has never won anything since his time at the House of Representatives? Why does he show up at every election? How come the people I defeated are now the ones defeating him?”

Ukachukwu, on his part, dismissed the criticism in a separate interview, asserting that his former Labour Party rival “came from a disadvantaged position” when he defected into the APC.

Ozigbo confirmed on April 8 that he had appealed the primary’s outcome to the APC Appeals Committee, branding the process “a charade, a well-orchestrated heist designed to deliver a predetermined outcome.”

He alleged that non-members were listed as delegates, loyalists were barred or intimidated, and vote counts were manipulated.

Still, Ozigbo insists he will remain within the APC to safeguard democratic values.

“This is not just about me. It is about the soul of our democracy, about the values we claim to represent, and about the future we owe our children. I will stay the course.”

“I did not join politics to decorate the register or receive accolades. I came to restore integrity to our political system. I will stand firm, here in the APC, and I will fight this good fight to its just end,” he said.

The primary vote tallies were: Ukachukwu 1,455; Ozigbo 67; Johnbosco Onunkwo 26; Edozie Madu 8.

Three aspirants; Sir Paul Chukwuma, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, and Hon. Chuma Umeoji withdrew citing procedural opacity.

APGA’s Soludo was later confirmed unopposed with nearly unanimous support, while the Labour Party chose George Moghalu over John Nwosu by 573 to 19.

INEC has set the Anambra governorship election for November 8, 2025.
