PDP Threatens Legal Action Against Okowa, Oborevwori For Joining APC

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to sanction governors and elected public officials within its fold who are supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

Central to the impending crackdown is Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Following its first National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja yesterday, the PDP instructed its Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, to initiate legal proceedings against Okowa, Oborevwori, and the PDP structure in Delta State for alleged defection to the APC.

Speaking at a press briefing after the meeting, Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, confirmed that the party had adopted all recommendations from its recent governors’ forum meeting in Ibadan and announced May 27 as the date for the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

On the defection trend, Damagum said: “They (the APC) can coerce, cajole, and intimidate our members into joining them. But they can only do that because they feel they have what it takes. Nigerians, when the time comes, will show them the results of their actions, and they will receive the verdict from Nigerians. It has happened before, and it will happen again.”

He added, “The parameters that will make Nigerians revolt against them are all in place. This government has been so insensitive to the yearnings and feelings of the people.”

“We are Nigerians; taxpaying, law-abiding citizens. We have rights. And when the time comes, Nigerians will show them that they have rights. 2027 is between Nigerians and Tinubu and the APC. So, I want to urge our supporters to remain calm,” Damagum said.

The PDP also directed its South-South zonal caretaker committee led by Emma Ogidi to immediately assume control of party activities in Delta State, pending the formation of a new caretaker committee.

The committee has been mandated to take inventory of party assets and disregard the current leadership under Chief Dan Orbih.

Damagum insisted: “As far as the Electoral Act states, whenever you leave, you must vacate the position you occupied. We will pursue this. I also want to warn party members to remain faithful to the party.”

In a media appearance on Arise News, former Delta Governor Okowa offered insight into his defection, saying, “the PDP is not ready for the 2027 general elections.”

He also claimed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is preparing to leave the PDP.

“I know that he is already heading out of the PDP from the communications he has passed on to me, and Nigerians already know this,” Okowa said.

Reflecting on the 2023 presidential election, Okowa expressed regret over accepting the role of Atiku’s running mate instead of aligning with southern sentiments.

“Even when we were campaigning, I realised our people were not interested in having another northerner come into power,” he said.

“But the decision had already been taken at the federal level by the party, and I had been nominated. Still, in retrospect, I now believe I should have gone with the will of my people.”

Justifying the election of Oborevwori as Delta governor, Okowa said it proved the people’s confidence in their leadership.

On whether he communicated with Atiku prior to his defection, he said “I actually did communicate with him that we were going to have stakeholders’ meetings this week (last week)… and that it was going to be a leadership meeting.”

“The outcome of that meeting was going to determine our next path because we were no longer comfortable with the PDP.”

Okowa also took a swipe at former Senate President Bukola Saraki: “I did not expect someone like Saraki to speak concerning me because he has also moved to the APC before and returned, so I don’t think he has the moral right to speak about my defection.”

Explaining the broader context, Okowa said: “As stakeholders and leaders in the state, we have sat down to look at events in the last several months. Considering these events and the communication coming out from the leaders of the party, it does not appear to us at the moment that the PDP is the proper political vehicle for us to continue in.”

He continued: “It also does not appear to us that the PDP is ready to be competitive in the 2027 elections. If a party, as currently led, decides to go it alone and is not ready for alliances or coalitions with other parties, how do they intend to compete?”

“Having critically examined the situation… we decided it was time to take this step,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the PDP’s internal crisis deepened as the Good Governance Group within the party blamed Atiku’s unyielding presidential ambition for sowing division. The group also condemned comments by Atiku’s son, Mohammed, targeting Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for alleged disloyalty during past elections.

In a statement signed by its Director of Media, Chidubem Ikenna, the group said: “If your father had spent half as much time building real bridges as he does tearing down perceived opponents, perhaps he wouldn’t need you out here insulting those who once stood by him.”

They defended Governor Bala, saying, “The same Governor Bala Mohammed you now criticise openly stood with Atiku in 2019 and never asked for payback—only for mutual respect and fairness.”

The group added, “It is time for you and those in your father’s camp to understand that no one, no matter how wealthy, experienced, or connected, is bigger than the party. The PDP is not a family business. It is not a retirement plan. And it is certainly not a vehicle to launder personal legacies at the expense of collective progress.”

They described Atiku’s leadership as one marked by arrogance, lack of consensus-building, and an inability to inspire voters.

“The defeat was the result of Nigerians seeing through his approach—a man unwilling to adapt, unable to inspire, and incapable of winning without turning every ambition into a warpath,” the statement read.

In a separate development, the Oyo State chapter of the APC reiterated its support for President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, citing his administration’s early achievements and commitment to national development.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in Ibadan, APC State Chairman Alhaji Olayide Abas praised Tinubu’s governance style: “Those of us familiar with Mr President’s antecedents are not surprised by the courage, determination, and patriotism he has demonstrated in governance.”

He added: “It is on this note that the stakeholders of the party, during the extended executive committee meeting, announced our readiness to support President Tinubu beyond 2027.”

The party noted a growing number of defections from the opposition as proof of rising confidence in Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Peace Advocates, a group within the Oyo APC led by Dr. Akin Onigbinde (SAN), Chief Wale Ohu, and Prince Niran Olayoju, also pledged to promote unity within the party by touring the state to encourage reconciliation and cohesion.

Imo PDP Backs NWC Decision To Sack Anyanwu, Throws Weight Behind Koshoedo As National Secretary

The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind the decision of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to remove Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary and appoint Architect Setonji Koshoedo in his place.

In reaction to the development, the Interim Chairman of the Imo PDP, Chris Odoemenan, described the move as a fresh start for the party in the state.

He revealed that the party’s entire structure, including the 27 local government caretaker committees, had unanimously supported the NWC’s action.

“The Imo Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Interim Committee led by Chris Odoemenan, alongside the 27 local government Caretaker Committee today passed a vote of confidence on the PDP NWC over the unanimous appointment of Arch. Setonji Koshoedo, as the substantive National Secretary of the party,” a statement issued after an emergency meeting in Owerri stated.

The leadership also affirmed their unwavering loyalty to both the new National Secretary and Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the lawmaker representing Ideato Federal Constituency, who is widely regarded as the party’s leading figure in the state.

“The PDP Interim EXCO at their emergency meeting held this evening (Tuesday) in Owerri, Imo State pledged their support to the State Leader and only surviving PDP public elected officer, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere (Ideato Rep) for his commitment,” Odoemenan added.

Furthermore, the state chapter urged the National Working Committee to formally ratify the interim executive committee of the Imo PDP at the party’s next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, noting that the nominations were made by key party stakeholders in the state.

“With Samuel Anyanwu now placed where he belongs, it is our firm belief and resolve that internal skirmishes in our state chapter of the party are now fully settled and PDP will rebound for the electoral contests ahead in Imo,” Odoemenan concluded.

Telecom Operators To Appear Before Enugu State Assembly Over Poor Services

The Enugu State House of Assembly has moved to address the growing concerns over dropped calls and customer dissatisfaction with telecom operators in the state.

During a plenary session on Tuesday, Hon. Harrison Ogara, the member representing Igbo-Eze South Constituency, raised concerns about the negative financial impact on consumers due to unreliable telecom services.

Ogara pointed out that with over 219 million Nigerians subscribing to telecom services, Enugu residents have been disproportionately affected by the inconsistency in service delivery, leading to significant financial losses.

He proposed that telecom operators such as MTN, Globacom, Airtel, and 9 Mobile be summoned to explain their plans to reimburse customers who have been affected by dropped calls.

In addition to requesting refunds, Ogara called for the telecom companies to provide accurate subscriber data and proof of tax compliance with the Enugu State Government.

He also suggested the formation of a committee comprising state officials to investigate the financial losses suffered by residents due to telecom inefficiencies, with the findings to be made public and refunds issued where necessary.

“Mr. Speaker, distinguished colleagues, I rise to draw your attention to the current epileptic services of the telecom service providers in Enugu State, which have resulted in huge losses for our citizens.”

“Notwithstanding being a late entrant into the global mobile (GSM) market, Nigeria has clearly outpaced many countries when we consider the market size and telephone usage.

“It is quite absurd and preposterous that even with the rapid growth of the sector and its consequent growth in consumer size, users of telecom services in Enugu State have continued to groan under the scorching pressure of abysmal performance in services,” Ogara lamented.

Other members of the Assembly joined in expressing their frustration with the poor services and high tariffs charged by the telecom operators, drawing comparisons to the problematic billing practices in other utility sectors.

Hon. Malachy Onyechi, representing Nsukka West, likened the telecom operators’ practices to those of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), which often imposes exorbitant estimated bills without providing adequate services.

Hon. Clifford One, representing Igbo-Eze North 2, also supported the motion, comparing the telecom operators’ practices to banking services where customers are debited but the transaction does not go through.

In a related development, the House of Assembly passed the Enugu State Land Use Charge Second Amendment, House Bill 6, 2025, presented by Hon. Iloabuchi Aniagu, the member representing Nkanu West Constituency.

To facilitate the swift passage of the bill, the Assembly suspended Order 14, Rule 102, subsection 1 of the House Standing Orders.

EFCC Releases E-Money Hours After Interrogation Over Alleged Naira Abuse

Popular Nigerian socialite, Emeka Okonkwo, also known as E-Money, has been released on bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following his arrest over alleged abuse of the naira.

A source within the EFCC, who requested anonymity, confirmed to judiciary correspondent Shola Soyele that E-Money was granted bail on Tuesday and is expected to face formal charges in court soon.

E-Money was reportedly arrested in the Omole area of Lagos and later transferred to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

His arrest followed allegations that he was seen at a public gathering where he allegedly sprayed both naira and U.S dollar bills — actions said to be in violation of Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act.

As at the time of this report, the EFCC has not issued an official statement regarding his arrest.

Court Orders EFCC To Release Aisha Achimugu Within 24 Hours

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release businesswoman and socialite, Aisha Achimugu, within 24 hours of his ruling.

In his directive, Justice Ekwo also instructed that both parties appear before the court on May 2nd to report the outcome of the order.

The judge had earlier, on Monday, instructed Achimugu to present herself to the EFCC in relation to an ongoing investigation into allegations of money laundering and other offences.

Justice Ekwo stated that upon her appearance at the EFCC office, “the anti-graft agency is to return and make an appearance before the court with her on Wednesday, April 30, for report.”

Achimugu was arrested at about 5 am on Tuesday by EFCC operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, shortly after she returned to Nigeria from London.

The EFCC is probing Achimugu over alleged involvement in conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, money laundering, corruption, and ownership of properties believed to be unlawfully acquired.

Although she had previously been arrested and released on administrative bail, the EFCC later claimed she violated her bail conditions and subsequently declared her wanted.

BREAKING: Court Of Appeal Upholds Conviction Of Prof. Ogban For Falsifying Election Results In Favour Of Akpabio

The Court of Appeal sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, has affirmed the conviction and three-year prison sentence handed to Professor Peter Ogban for his role in falsifying election results during the 2019 Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District election to benefit Senator Godswill Akpabio.

In its ruling delivered on Wednesday, the appellate court upheld the earlier verdict of the High Court in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, which found Ogban guilty of electoral malpractice.

The court, in strong terms, denounced his conduct, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions, especially “as a university professor entrusted with the integrity of the electoral process.”

Ogban, a professor of Soil Physics at the University of Calabar, served as the returning officer in the senatorial election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prosecuted him after uncovering that he had manipulated results to favour Godswill Akpabio, then Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.

According to the court’s findings, Ogban deliberately inflated Akpabio’s votes and suppressed those of his opponent, Christopher Ekpenyong of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Akpabio, however, has consistently denied any connection to the fraudulent acts, insisting he was not involved in the manipulation.

The case stemmed from a broader probe led by the then Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for INEC in Akwa Ibom, Barrister Mike Igini, who initiated the prosecution of two university professors, Peter Ogban and Ignatius Uduk, for tampering with and announcing falsified election results.

The Court of Appeal’s decision now firmly cements the conviction of Ogban as “one of the landmark outcomes” of that effort.

In a related development, another academic, Professor Ignatius Uduk of the University of Uyo, was sentenced in February by a State High Court in Uyo to three years’ imprisonment.

Uduk was found guilty of perjury and for publishing false results during the 2019 Essien Udim State Constituency election where he served as the returning officer.

Along with the prison sentence, he was fined N100,000.

The case marked the second major conviction of a Nigerian professor for electoral misconduct.

Uduk was first arraigned in December 2020 after evading multiple court summons.

He pleaded not guilty to the three charges brought against him by INEC.

The case suffered numerous adjournments due to various delays, including a change of defence counsel and an incident where the professor collapsed in court during cross-examination.

At one point in the proceedings, Uduk accused the trial judge of bias and requested that the judge recuse himself from the case, a request that was granted.

Ironically, the case was later reassigned to the same judge, who eventually concluded the trial.

2027: Don’t Play Second Fiddle, Lead Tinubu’s Re-election Bid, Kalu Urges South East

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on the South East to take a frontline role in President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that the era of playing second fiddle in national politics is over.

Speaking in Umuahia, the capital of his home state, Abia, at the unveiling of the Renewed Hope Partners initiative, Kalu emphasized that the zone must do more than offer token support to the Tinubu-led federal government.

He described RHP as a strategic platform to publicize the achievements of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Kalu explained that the RHP would engage in grassroots voter education to deepen understanding of the Renewed Hope Agenda among communities in the region.

“The RHP would create ambassadors whose job would be to advocate and showcase the good works of President Tinubu’s administration in the country, particularly in the South East region, to convince them of the need for continuity,” he said.

To facilitate this, he revealed plans to set up Renewed Hope Councils in every LGA across the South East.

These councils, he said, would be linked to the South East Development Commission (SEDC) outreach teams, integrating the President’s policy wins into tangible local programmes.

According to him, “each of the seven pillars would be aligned with local town-hall campaigns, ensuring that every citizen sees the direct benefits of President Tinubu’s agenda.”

The Deputy Speaker praised Tinubu’s leadership, saying the administration had made significant strides in economic reform, youth empowerment, and bridging developmental divides across the country.

“President Tinubu’s administration has fundamentally improved the nation’s economy by empowering the youth and thus begun to bridge the development gap between various zones,” he noted.

Citing specific accomplishments in the South East, Kalu pointed to the President’s commitment to completing the Eastern Rail Line from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, which would link key commercial hubs such as Aba and Onitsha to Northern markets.

“This project is expected to unlock a ₦50 billion annual trade portfolio,” he added.

He also highlighted energy infrastructure developments, including the gas project commissioned by Tinubu in Imo State, the expansion of the AHL and ANOH Gas Processing Plants, and the construction of the 23.3 km ANOH–OB3 Custody Transfer Metering Station pipeline.

According to him, these initiatives, once completed, “would collectively supply approximately 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, thereby increasing domestic gas supply by at least 25%.”

Kalu mentioned that President Tinubu had also shown commitment to industrializing the oil and gas sector in the region through the establishment of NOGaPS Industrial Parks by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) across states like Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Abia, and Ondo.

He further said the President supports the full development of the Anambra Gas Basin for national and regional economic benefit.

Beyond the South East, Kalu said the Tinubu-led government has performed well nationwide, pointing to the doubling of federal revenues to over ₦9 trillion in the first quarter of 2024 and a 97% drop in debt servicing within just 13 months.

He also cited $50.8 billion in foreign investments and growth in GDP from 27% in 2023 to 34% in 2024 as signs of the administration’s success.

According to him, the newly established SEDC has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to implement an integrated development plan.

“This includes investment in agriculture, manufacturing, and technology to stimulate entrepreneurship, job creation, and critical infrastructure development,” he said.

Kalu further urged the federal government to fast-track additional infrastructure across the region, including the construction of gas pipelines, dredging of the Onitsha River Port to open up inland waterways for trade, gully erosion control across the states, and eco-conservation projects such as reforestation of Udi Hills.

He called for more ecological funds to combat flood risks in cities like Aba and Onitsha and the preservation of mangrove ecosystems along the Imo River to sustain local fisheries and protect shorelines.

“Mr. President, having delivered on his eight-point agenda, the South East region should decisively align with his-led federal government and harness these gains for their well-being,” Kalu declared.

“I therefore urge the South East Region to reciprocate the President’s gesture by giving him the majority votes come 2027,” he concluded.

I Regret Running With Atiku As VP In 2023 – Former Delta Governor, Okowa

Former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has openly expressed regret over his decision to contest as the vice-presidential candidate alongside Alhaji Atiku Abubakar under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Okowa admitted that his choice ran contrary to the prevailing sentiment among the people of Delta State.

“Even when we were campaigning, I realised our people were not interested in having another northerner come into power,” he stated.

He acknowledged that although the PDP had made the decision at the national level and he had already been nominated, he later came to see that it was out of alignment with the expectations of his constituents.

“But the decision had already been taken at the federal level by the party (PDP) and I had been nominated. Still, in retrospect, I now believe I should have gone with the will of my people,” he said.

In addition, Okowa responded to recent criticism from former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, over his move from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), asserting that Saraki lacked the moral standing to speak on the matter.

“I did not expect that someone like Senator Bukola Saraki should be able to speak concerning me, because he knows that he had also moved to APC before and eventually returned,” Okowa said.

“So he has had movement to and fro. So, I don’t think that he has the moral right to even speak about my defection at all.”

He further explained that the decision to join the APC was not personal, but a strategic one reached after consultations with key political stakeholders in Delta State.

According to him, the PDP had become weakened by internal discord and lacked the vision required to move forward.

“Several things have been going on in the party. While I do not want to join issues with people, as stakeholders, our leaders in this state have sat down to look at the events in the last several months,” Okowa noted.

“Because of the events that we see and the communications coming out from the leadership of the PDP at the moment, it did not appear to us that that was a proper political vehicle for us to continue in.”

He concluded by saying that the disunity among PDP governors and the persistent leadership crisis within the party signaled its unpreparedness for any meaningful political engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Defections: PDP NWC Holds Emergency Meeting

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday held an emergency meeting at its national secretariat in Abuja, as the party grapples with a wave of high-profile defections and internal instability.

The meeting, which is taking place behind closed doors, comes on the heels of significant losses for the PDP, particularly in Delta State, one of its traditional strongholds.

Just last week, former vice presidential candidate and ex-governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, alongside the sitting Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a move that sent shockwaves through the opposition, the two leaders were joined by the Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, state commissioners, local government chairmen, and key grassroots operatives.

Their decision followed a private meeting in Asaba, the state capital, after which the entire PDP structure in the state appeared to collapse into the APC.

This mass realignment has raised urgent questions about the PDP’s cohesion and electoral viability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Party leaders are said to be deliberating on damage control strategies and plans to restore internal unity.

As at the time of this report, details of the NWC’s deliberations have not been made public.

BREAKING: Edeoga’s Return To PDP Triggers Mass Exodus From LP As Former Enugu Assembly Member, Peter Obi Campaign DG, Others Dump Party

Wave of defections have continued to rock the Labour Party in Enugu State, following the return of Barr. Chijioke Edeoga, its 2023 governorship candidate, to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), DAILY GAZETTE reports.

Several prominent figures, including the former Director-General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign in Enugu, Chief Emeka Mamah; a former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly who represented Udenu Constituency, Hon. Obinna Ijere; and the State Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Barr. Onuorah Odoh, have all officially dumped the party, citing loyalty to Edeoga.

DAILY GAZETTE gathered that Chief Mamah, whose grassroots mobilization was instrumental to the Labour Party’s rise during the 2023 general elections, announced his defection on Tuesday in his Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.

He was joined by a large contingent of supporters.

Addressing party faithful at the state PDP Secretariat, Mamah declared, “my political journey has always been guided by principle, loyalty, and the pursuit of justice. I followed Edeoga to the Labour Party because I believed in his vision. Now that he has returned to the PDP, it is only natural that we reunite to continue the struggle from within a platform that gives us the best chance to serve our people.”

The former Commissioner added, “the Labour Party in Enugu has lost direction since Edeoga left. The structure is crumbling, the energy has dropped, and there’s no cohesive leadership. We cannot continue in a vacuum.”

This latest defection adds to the growing list of Labour Party leaders and supporters who have returned to the PDP in recent weeks, following Edeoga’s formal re-entry into the party where he previously served as Commissioner and a member of the House of Representatives.

Also speaking, Hon. Obinna Ijere, who was elected into the Enugu State House of Assembly under the Labour Party in 2023 before being removed by the court, said, “We gave our all to the Labour Party because we believed it was a people-driven platform. But the internal contradictions, lack of leadership structure, and Edeoga’s exit forced us to re-evaluate. The PDP remains the strongest vehicle for real governance in Enugu.”

However, officials of the Labour Party in Enugu have downplayed the development, insisting that the party remains focused and resilient.
