ADC: Malami’s Defection Politically Irrelevant – Kebbi Govt

The Kebbi State Government has downplayed the political impact of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), following his recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking to newsmen, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmed Idris, said Malami’s move holds no political weight in the state and has no effect on the popularity or performance of the current administration.

“Well, the defection of the former Attorney General is not something that the people or the government of Kebbi State will be unhappy about. In fact, we are happy he left because he didn’t add any value to our administration,” he said.

He emphasized that Governor Idris enjoys strong grassroots support, reinforced by his performance in office.

“Our governor is already well-grounded in the minds of the people, and his achievements speak volumes. In fact, the people of Kebbi State are so impressed with him that they want him to continue after eight years or even go to Abuja to become the president of this country,” he added.

Dismissing Malami’s political relevance, Idris argued that the former AGF has never had a solid support base in Kebbi.

“As for Malami, he has no political integrity in Kebbi State. He has never even won his own polling unit in any election, let alone the majority of votes across the state. So, his defection means nothing to us. We are not worried because he has no impact or value.”

Commenting on recent opposition realignments, he said such coalitions are driven by self-interest, not service to the public.

“We’re not worried at all. They cannot defeat the APC not even at the top level. If you look at the caliber of people who defected whether from APC or PDP, they’re doing it purely for selfish interests, not for the people,” he said.

He also cited concerns raised by youths who felt abandoned after being engaged by Malami’s camp.

“Some youths were invited for a meeting by Malami’s people about a new movement. In the end, they were abandoned. He couldn’t even support them. Some of them came to me and complained,” Idris explained.

He highlighted Governor Idris’s inclusive governance style, pointing to appointments made across ethnic and regional lines.

“He doesn’t discriminate whether you’re Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Benin — it doesn’t matter. I’m not even from Kebbi State; I’m a Nupe man from Niger. Yet he picked me as his Chief Press Secretary. He gave appointments to Igbos, Yorubas, and others. That shows the inclusivity of his leadership,” he noted.

Listing key achievements of the administration, Idris mentioned the completion of the state secretariat, rural infrastructure development, and support for traditional institutions.

“He also supported the traditional institutions, renovated palaces of the four Emirs in Kebbi, bought them official vehicles, and didn’t just leave things to contractors.”

On security and agriculture, he added: “He created operational bases in volatile areas where people couldn’t farm or sleep peacefully. Today, areas like Shanga and Yauri are safer… He purchased over 200 trucks of fertilizer and distributed them for free.”

In closing, Idris advised Malami to reconsider his political direction and reflect on the support he once enjoyed under the APC.

“My advice to Malami is that he should rethink his decision. Leaving the APC is a wrong move. Malami benefited from this party and grew politically under APC. He should have stayed loyal.”

“No matter what anyone does in Kebbi today, they can’t win against the goodwill, the performance, and the legacy of my principal. He has touched the lives of the masses and that’s what truly counts,” he concluded.

Senate Removes Natasha As Chair Of Diaspora Committee, Replaces Her With Aniekan Bassey

The Senate on Thursday removed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as Chair of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), replacing her with Senator Aniekan Bassey of Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District.

The announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary. No official reason was given for the decision.

“The new chairman is Distinguished Senator Aniekan Bassey, and it will take effect from today,” Akpabio stated.

While addressing the broader context of committee assignments, the Senate President hinted at an upcoming reshuffle of vice chairmanship positions to promote fairness in the distribution of roles.

“We will make some changes to our vice chairmanship positions next week. Some of the senators have two vice chairmanship positions. Every senator should either be a chairman or a vice chairman so we balance the situation,” he said.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was initially appointed as Chair of the Local Content Committee but was removed earlier this year. On February 4, 2025, she was reassigned to head the Committee on Diaspora and NGOs.

Her removal from the Diaspora Committee comes amid ongoing tension between her and Senate leadership.

In March, Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended over allegations of gross misconduct following a confrontation with Akpabio, reportedly over seating arrangements on the Senate floor.

Despite a court ruling that nullified her suspension, she has not yet returned to active legislative duties.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Akpoti-Uduaghan said she was waiting for official court documentation before making her return.

“I am awaiting the Certified True Copy of the judgment before officially returning to plenary,” she said, adding that she was acting on legal counsel and out of respect for the institution.

Panic As Bandits Raid Plateau Community, Abduct Palace Officials, Burn Houses

At least three people, including two palace administrators, were abducted while several houses were set ablaze on Wednesday evening when bandits attacked Bunyun community in the Bashar District of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The assault came just four days after a similar attack in the area where vigilantes were reportedly killed and homes destroyed.

Speaking to DAILY GAZETTE, Abdulbari’u Muhammad, the paramount ruler of Bunyun, confirmed the incident.

He said that two senior palace officials, the Waziri and the Wakili, along with his younger brother, were abducted.

According to the traditional leader, the attackers struck at around 7:30 p.m., firing indiscriminately as they stormed the community.

“The bandits stormed the community in large numbers, riding on motorcycles. They looted valuable items, including food, clothes, motorcycles, and other goods,” Muhammad said.

He linked the assault to a recent confrontation between local vigilantes and bandits that took place on Sunday.

The monarch, who has since fled to Bashar town for safety, said many residents had also abandoned their homes following the raid.

“We are completely confused and don’t know what to do, which is why we fled to Bashar. Everybody has fled because people are afraid to remain in the area,” he said.

Muhammad also expressed concern over the impact on farming activities, stressing the urgent need for government intervention.

“The residents, who are mainly farmers, have already planted their crops. We need the government to deploy enough security personnel to the area to enable them to continue farming and secure their livelihoods,” he appealed.

Another resident, Abubakar Zubairu, corroborated the account, saying the community was virtually empty by Thursday morning.

He added that he had also sought refuge in Bashar, fearing further attacks.

Our correspondent reports that several women and children were seen fleeing the community with belongings on their heads.

As at the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for Operation Safe Haven, Major Samson Zhakom, had not responded to calls or a text message.

ADC Seeks N100 Million In Damages From Abuja’s Wells Carlton Hotel Over Last-Minute Event Cancellation

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced its intention to pursue legal action against the Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments in Asokoro, Abuja, following the abrupt cancellation of a high-profile political event scheduled to take place at the venue.

According to ADC’s legal counsel, Kabiru Abdullahi, the hotel not only failed to refund the ₦6 million already paid for the reservation but also left the party scrambling less than 24 hours before the event.

Speaking to The Peoples Gazette, Abdullahi disclosed that the party is now demanding ₦100 million in damages from the hotel for the “inconvenience and embarrassment” it caused.

DAILY GAZETTE had earlier reported that the unveiling event, which was meant to formally announce ADC as the political platform for Nigeria’s growing opposition coalition, was unexpectedly disrupted last Wednesday after the hotel abruptly withdrew its reservation agreement.

The event was set to draw notable figures from across Nigeria’s political spectrum, positioning the ADC as a unifying vehicle to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

However, on the morning of the scheduled event, organizers received a message from the hotel stating it could no longer accommodate them, citing a vague “internal compliance matter.”

A screenshot of the message, shared online by media personality and politician Dele Momodu, read:

“Dear Esteemed Patron, Thank you once again for choosing the Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments.
We sincerely regret to inform you that due to an internal compliance matter that has just come to our attention, we are unable to proceed with hosting your scheduled event.”

Commenting on the short notice, Mr Abdullahi expressed frustration at the hotel’s handling of the situation.

“A guarantee was given to us on the venue’s availability, with an invoice of the payment made, but they waited until less than 24 hours before notifying us of the cancellation,” he said.

“Giving us ‘internal compliance’ as the reason for the cancellation without any further explanation. We paid you and you and gave us an invoice, then we went back to our businesses, preparing for the event, only for them to call some minutes before midnight, less than 24 hours to the event which was supposed to take place at 2 p.m. the next day stating that it’s because of internal compliance.”

He emphasized that the last-minute cancellation was not only disruptive but a breach of contract, especially considering the party had already finalized payments and logistics.

“They sent us into a frantic moment to look for alternatives to prepare for the event and had to pay extra money for refreshments for the event,” Abdullahi said.

“The venue couldn’t contain the participants, they caused us so much inconvenience and they also caused us embarrassment.”

The ADC lawyer elaborated that the party had paid ₦6,063,000 to the Wells Carlton Hotel, which included the venue reservation and catering for guests.

A formal letter has since been sent to the hotel, demanding immediate reimbursement, a public apology, and compensation for damages amounting to ₦100 million.

“We sent them a letter demanding refund of our money, an apology and the sum of ₦100 million as damages and if they don’t, we will meet in court; it’s as simple as that,” Abdullahi said.

As at the time of this report, the hotel has not publicly responded to the allegations.

Supreme Court Upholds Okpebholo’s Victory As Edo Governor, Throws Out PDP Appeal For Lacking In Merit

The Supreme Court has validated the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected governor of Edo State, putting an end to the legal challenge filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, a five-member panel of justices, headed by Justice Mohammed Garba Lawal, dismissed the PDP’s appeal for lack of merit.

The apex court held that the petitioners failed to prove their allegations of electoral malpractice, including non-compliance with electoral laws, unlawful voting, and claims that Okpebholo was not lawfully declared winner.

The ruling affirms earlier decisions by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had also thrown out the opposition’s case on similar grounds.

Enugu Community Leaders Disown Sponsored Protest Against Govt Project, Reaffirm Support For Council Chairman Ogbodo, Gov. Mbah

Community leaders in Amurri, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, have distanced themselves from a recent protest allegedly staged by a section of the Umuigbo Amurri community against ongoing government-backed development projects in the area.

Speaking to DAILY GAZETTE, the traditional ruler of Enuagu Amurri Ancient Kingdom, Igwe Charles Nwoye, condemned the protest and described it as the handiwork of a few individuals with selfish intentions.

He reaffirmed the community’s collective support for the ongoing Smart Green Farm Project and other state interventions facilitated by Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.

“We were part of the agreement that handed over the land to the local government. It is unfortunate that some people, for personal gain, are trying to disrupt what will benefit the entire Amurri land,” Igwe Nwoye stated.

He emphasized that the land in question, located in Ogbaekpo Amurri, has remained fallow for generations and was willingly released to the government after consultations with all relevant stakeholders, including traditional leaders.

On his part, the councilor representing Amurri Ward in the Nkanu West Legislative Council, Hon. Obinna Chukwu, described the protest as politically motivated.

He expressed disappointment that while the community is witnessing unprecedented government attention through projects such as the Smart Green Farm, Smart Green School, and a Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centre, a few elements are working to discredit these efforts.

“Governor Mbah has brought life-changing projects to our people. This is the first time in decades that Amurri is receiving this level of attention. We cannot allow selfish interests to derail our progress,” Hon. Chukwu said.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the council and the people of Amurri to continue supporting the government’s vision and praised the efforts of the Nkanu West Local Government Chairman, Hon. John Ogbodo, for championing the development of rural communities.

Hon. Ogbodo had earlier disclosed that the land acquisition followed due consultation with the community, including a formal agreement signed with traditional leaders such as Igwe Fidelis Nsiegbu of Umuigbo Amurri.

He noted that the Smart Green Farm Project also serves a security purpose, helping to deter cattle rustlers who have previously invaded the area.

While construction on the farm and related infrastructure continues at a rapid pace, the council chairman expressed dismay over attempts by certain individuals to incite unrest for personal gain.

Despite the distractions, work on the Smart Green Farm Project remains in top gear, with assurances from both local leaders and the government that the vision for rural transformation in Amurri will not be derailed.

US Ends Shoe Removal Requirement At Airport Security Checkpoints

Passengers flying through US airports will no longer need to remove their shoes during security screening, marking the end of a rule that’s been in place for nearly two decades.

The change was officially announced on Tuesday by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during a press conference held at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.

The controversial policy was first introduced in 2006, five years after Richard Reid, the so-called “Shoe Bomber,” attempted to detonate explosives hidden in his footwear aboard an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami in December 2001.

Reid, later identified as a member of Al-Qaeda, was subdued by fellow passengers before he could ignite the fuse.

“In those 20 years since that policy was put in place, our security technology has changed dramatically. It’s evolved. TSA has changed. We have a multi-layered whole of government approach now to security,” Noem said.

“We are very confident that we can continue to provide hospitality to folks and for American travelers and for those visiting our country, while maintaining the same standard of security for passengers and for our homeland,” she added.

Reid ultimately pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges and is currently serving a life sentence at a maximum-security facility in Colorado.

Following the announcement, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) issued a statement confirming that while the shoe-removal requirement is being scrapped, other layers of security will remain intact.

“Other aspects of TSA’s layered security approach will still apply during the TSA checkpoint process. For example, passengers must still clear identity verification, Secure Flight vetting, and other processes,” the agency said.

The move is seen as part of a broader modernization of airport security procedures that have evolved significantly in the wake of past terror threats.

The September 11, 2001 attacks prompted a wave of new safety protocols, and the 2006 foiled UK-based plot to use liquid explosives on multiple flights led to the current restrictions on liquids and gels in carry-on luggage.

Despite advancements in screening technology, TSA maintains that key safeguards, such as thorough vetting and surveillance, will continue to protect travelers across the country.

I Gave My Baby Coca-Cola, Not ‘Action Bitters’, Woman In Viral Video Clarifies

A woman seen in a viral video feeding a baby from what appeared to be a sachet of the alcoholic drink Action Bitters has clarified that the substance was actually Coca-Cola, not alcohol, as widely assumed.

The video, which caused public outrage after circulating online, included a caption claiming the beverage was given to the child “every night just for her to sleep.”

In response, the Nigeria Police Force launched an investigation into the incident.

In a follow-up video, the unidentified woman explained that the clip was intended purely for entertainment and not meant to depict real actions.

“About the video I posted earlier, that is not Action Bitters. It is Coke. I poured Coke into the sachet,” she said.

“To be sincere, it was Coke I poured into the Action Bitters sachet. I even have a video on my phone showing when I was doing it.”

She admitted the move was a poor attempt at gaining attention online and acknowledged that the idea had “backfired.”

“I would never give her Action Bitters. I am not that kind of mother. I do not even take it myself,” she said, while insisting that the child, who is only five months old, was never given alcohol.

Appealing to the public for leniency, she added:

“We are begging Nigerians, please forgive us.”

As of the time of this report, the police have not issued a formal update on the status of the investigation.

Senate Move Against Ponzi Schemes After CBEX Collapse Devastates Investors

The Nigerian Senate has directed a joint committee to launch a thorough investigation into the growing number of Ponzi schemes in the country.

This follows the dramatic collapse of Crypto Bullion Exchange (CBEX), which is believed to have swindled investors out of more than ₦1.3 trillion.

The resolution came in response to a motion presented by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (Lagos East), who expressed alarm at the unchecked proliferation of fraudulent investment platforms.

He cited past schemes like MMM Nigeria (2016) and MBA Forex (2020), alongside CBEX, as examples of ventures that promised massive returns on digital assets but ended in losses for millions.

Lawmakers voiced serious concerns over the human impact of the latest collapse.

They warned that CBEX’s sudden disappearance had caused severe financial hardship, emotional trauma, and even led to cases of suicide among victims.

During the session, senators also condemned the apparent failure of financial regulators to act swiftly, despite CBEX’s widespread visibility and operations.

They questioned the silence of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Senate has tasked the joint committee to conduct a public hearing in the coming weeks and deliver a report within a month.

Back in April, the EFCC had already issued warnings about the rising threat of Ponzi schemes in Nigeria.

Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale said:

“You’ll recall that on March 11 this year, the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, had cause to instruct us to alert Nigerians about 58 Ponzi scheme companies; we came out with a list–that shows that we’re proactive and we have our hands on what is happening.”

He highlighted the agency’s ongoing efforts to inform the public about the dangers posed by fraudulent investment platforms.

In a related legal move, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on April 25, granted the EFCC permission to arrest and hold six individuals linked to CBEX.

They are facing allegations of orchestrating a scam worth over $1 billion.

According to EFCC counsel Fadila Yusuf, the anti-corruption agency had applied for the court’s approval to detain the suspects while it completes its investigation and prepares for possible prosecution.

The EFCC’s application requested two key orders: one to issue arrest warrants and another to keep the suspects in EFCC custody during the investigative process.

The agency emphasized that these steps fall within its legal mandate to detect, investigate, and prevent financial crimes.
