Today In History: How Biafra-Nigeria War Began On July 6, 1967

The Biafra-Nigerian Civil War, remains one of the most harrowing chapters in the nation’s history.

Sparked by deep-rooted political, ethnic, and economic tensions, the war broke out in July 1967 when the Eastern Region of Nigeria declared independence as the Republic of Biafra.

In response, the Nigerian federal government launched a military campaign to reclaim the breakaway region, igniting a brutal conflict that would last nearly three years.

From 1967 to 1970, Nigeria was consumed by a war that devastated its southeastern region and left deep scars that still linger today.

According to records cited by Wikipedia, more than 100,000 soldiers were killed during the fighting. But the greater tragedy was borne by civilians, between 500,000 and 2 million Biafrans died, primarily due to starvation.

The humanitarian crisis reached global attention as images of emaciated children flooded the media, prompting international aid efforts and raising urgent questions about the ethics of warfare and blockades.

The Biafran side, encircled and cut off from vital food and medical supplies, suffered immensely under the weight of famine.

Though the war ended in January 1970 with the reintegration of Biafra into Nigeria, its legacy remains.

The phrase “No Victor, No Vanquished” became a slogan of post-war reconciliation, but for many, the psychological and emotional wounds never fully healed.

Today, the Biafran War serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers of division, the importance of dialogue, and the enduring cost of armed conflict on civilian populations.

Eight K!lled, Several Injured As Mazda Bus Collides With Truck In Badagry

Eight individuals lost their lives and several others were injured early Sunday in a tragic collision between a commercial Mazda bus and a DAF truck at Atura Bus Stop, inbound Badagry.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the victims included both the bus driver and his conductor among the fatalities.

Another eight passengers were rescued and rushed to Badagry General Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

Preliminary investigations by traffic enforcement officials revealed that the driver of the 16-seater Mazda bus (registration KJA 811 YF) was speeding and subsequently lost control, crashing into the DAF truck bearing registration T1 4636 LA.

LASTMA teams, working in coordination with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the Nigeria Police (Morogbo Division), and the Nigerian Army’s 244 Battalion from Ibereko Barracks, responded swiftly to the incident.

They led emergency operations to rescue survivors and recover bodies from the wreckage.

At the crash site, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki offered his condolences to the grieving families and issued a stern warning to commercial drivers:

“This tragic incident is a reminder that speed continues to be a silent killer on our roads. These deaths were avoidable if basic safety rules were followed.”

He further implored heavy-duty and commercial vehicle operators to make safety a priority, ensure vehicle maintenance, and submit to regular checks.

Highlighting the agency’s evolving focus, Bakare-Oki noted that LASTMA is integrating incident and disaster management into its traffic control operations.

“This transition aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, which promotes safety, emergency preparedness, and infrastructural efficiency as central to the urban transport strategy.”

Bakare-Oki also revealed that the state is installing speed-limiting devices at high-risk locations to help reduce fatalities.

He expressed gratitude to the FRSC, Nigeria Police, Nigerian Army, and LASTMA’s first responders for their prompt actions in rescue and relief efforts.

The agency urged all motorists and road users to remain vigilant, respect speed limits, and follow road safety regulations to prevent further tragedies.

Tinubu Saw Wike’s Potential, Appointed Him FCT Minister With Vision – Anglican Vicar

The Vicar of St. James Anglican Church, Asokoro, Abuja, Reverend Ben Idume, has commended President Bola Tinubu for his foresight in appointing former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), describing the President as a “visionary leader.”

Speaking during a thanksgiving service held to mark the successful completion of several projects by the FCT Administration under Wike’s leadership, Rev. Idume said the appointment had silenced critics and proven that Wike was capable of delivering results.

“I will not fail to thank President Tinubu who appointed this man to be minister because. The President, himself, is a visionary president. He can see vision somehow. That was why he saw that this man (Wike) can do something,” the cleric said.

“Tinubu can see vision, whether he closes his eyes or opens them. So, the President is a visionary president, so we thank him for making us happy in the FCT.”

Rev. Idume addressed the initial opposition Wike faced upon his appointment, especially from individuals questioning his religious background and southern origin.

“When he became a minister, some people said over their dead bodies, he would not be a minister. ‘How can a Christian be a minister? Have you ever heard it once? How can a southerner be a minister? Have you ever heard it? It can never be done,’” he recalled.

Despite those doubts, the cleric said Wike had risen above expectations and brought pride to the Christian and southern communities in the FCT.

“This church is thankful to God that a Christian minister, a southern minister, has come to rewrite the history of the Federal Capital Territory,” Idume added.

Wike attended the thanksgiving service accompanied by several prominent figures, including Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, former Benue State governor Samuel Ortom, former Enugu governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil) Heineken Lokpobiri, suspended Rivers Assembly Speaker Martins Amaewhule, PDP National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, and Senator Ifeanyi Ararume.

A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike openly supported Tinubu’s presidential bid in 2023 and was appointed as FCT Minister in 2024.

Despite serving under an APC-led administration, Wike has stood by his decision.

“I have no regrets, I have no apologies. If the opportunity comes I will do the same thing,” he said during a PDP thanksgiving event in Ahoada East and West LGAs of Rivers State.

He has consistently stated his continued loyalty to the PDP, even while serving in the federal cabinet.

Anambra Woman Seeks Tinubu’s Intervention Over Husband’s Disappearance Since 2024

Mrs. Tochukwu Ezemma, wife of missing Anambra State estate developer Ben Ezemma, has made a heartfelt plea to President Bola Tinubu for intervention after nearly a year of unanswered leads and fading hope.

Ben Ezemma, aged 34 and a director at Dubai Estate, vanished in November 2024 after meeting with a well-known figure in Awka. Mrs. Ezemma expressed her anguish:

“Even if they killed my husband, at least his corpse should be made available to us. The silence of security agents is killing me and the children slowly.”

She described her life since losing her husband as unbearable:

“Since the disappearance of my 34-year-old young man, the world has been turning around for me while those involved in the crime are roaming free in the society.”

“Some of them are involved in the coming elections in the state, while my husband is nowhere to be seen for close to a year now, and they want me to keep quiet.”

“Since my husband went missing in a mysterious way in 2024, sleep has gone far from me.”

“Our children are small; how am I going to take care of them alone?
“Please, our President, I am appealing to you and members of your cabinet to help this lonely woman in need.”

“Those who invited my husband for a meeting on that fateful day are still around and throwing money around in Anambra State.”

Mrs. Ezemma told newsmen she had already petitioned both the police and the Department of State Services in Anambra and Abuja, but felt ignored, believing only presidential intervention could save her from trauma.

Human rights activist Comrade Osita Obi also criticized the police for lackluster engagement, emphasizing public accountability:

“That is the reason we are interrogating the government and the police. They have all the apparatus at their disposal.”

“It might be this 34‑year‑old Ezemma today, but it could be any of us tomorrow. We want to know what happened to him. The cases of missing persons in this state are alarming.”

“We registered our SIM cards in this country, why can’t anybody track the perpetrators of this heinous crime? Our profiles are with the government. They should go into Ezemma’s call log to track his abductors.
“Honestly, I am in pain,” Obi lamented.

Imo To Host Nigeria’s First Sub-National AI Institute, Advance Digital Economy

The Imo State Government has declared its readiness to establish Nigeria’s first sub-national Artificial Intelligence Institute (AII), a major step in bolstering the state’s digital economy and positioning Imo as a national leader in technological innovation.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Digital Economy and E-Government, Dr. Chimezie Amadi, during a one-day workshop on “Regulatory and Policy Framework for Universal Access of Telecom,” held at the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), Umuagwo. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the state’s Ministry of Digital Economy.

According to Dr. Amadi, the planned institute will serve as a hub for AI education, research, and entrepreneurship.

He explained the broader goal of the project:

“Imo State is not only addressing the digital divide but actively pioneering universal access and digital inclusion through bold policy, strategic partnerships, and people-focused innovation.”

He emphasized that the AI Institute is part of a larger effort to stimulate investment, create employment, and boost the overall economy of the state.

Dr. Amadi also revealed that the AI Institute will be located within the soon-to-be-commissioned Imo Digital City, a multimillion-naira tech infrastructure project designed to house innovation-driven institutions and startups.

Despite the progress being made in urban centers, the commissioner acknowledged that rural communities continue to face challenges accessing digital services.

“Urban-rural disparities result in unequal access to essential services, with cities often having greater access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, while rural communities lag behind,” he said.

To bridge that gap, the government has launched multiple initiatives, notably the SkillUp Imo Project, which aims to equip 300,000 residents with digital skills by 2026.

“Over 50,000 youths have already been trained, with access to startup kits, mentorship, and remote job opportunities,” Dr. Amadi noted.

According to a communiqué issued in Abuja, the amnesty period began on May 1, 2025, and will continue through September 30, 2025.

It applies specifically to foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas or violated visa conditions.

The programme covers:

Individuals with expired Visa on Arrival (VoA)

Speaking at the event, Belusochukwu Enwere, the group’s National Coordinator, praised the youths for aligning with the vision of the President.

Governor Zulum Denies Defection Rumours, Reaffirms Commitment To APC

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has firmly denied reports claiming he plans to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), calling the speculation baseless and politically motivated.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Dauda Iliya, Governor Zulum addressed circulating rumours that he and five other governors were planning to leave the APC.

He categorically dismissed the claims.

“We have become aware of a fictitious and mischievous social media report circulating in certain quarters, alleging plans by me to decamp from the All Progressives Congress to the African Democratic Congress, alongside five other governors,” the governor stated.

“This is entirely false and exists only in the imagination of its sponsors. They are detractors who have made no meaningful contribution to the progress of Borno State or Nigeria.”

“It is a classic example of cheap, politically motivated speculation designed solely to distract us and create unnecessary political tension,” the statement added.

Governor Zulum reaffirmed his strong allegiance to the APC and reiterated that his focus remains on advancing development in Borno State.

“My loyalty to the APC remains firm, and my dedication is solely to the welfare and progress of Borno State.”

“I urge the good people of Borno and the general public to disregard this fabrication. We have no time for cheap politics; our hands are full of the noble task of rebuilding and developing our dear state.”

In his message, he urged media organisations and the public to verify any political information through credible sources before dissemination.

“I call on media outlets and the public to verify information from credible official sources and to ignore the desperate fabrications of those seeking relevance through disinformation.”

“We remain resolute in our commitment to serving Borno State under the banner of our great party, the APC,” the statement concluded.

Elon Musk Launches New Party To Challenge US Political Establishment

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and former ally of President Donald Trump, announced the formation of a new political party in the United States on Saturday.

The new group, called the America Party, aims to disrupt what Musk describes as a “one-party system” entrenched in wasteful spending and corruption.

The announcement came via a post on X (formerly Twitter), the social media platform owned by Musk.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote.
“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Musk’s break with Trump follows a contentious fallout after serving as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump-created agency tasked with cutting federal spending and jobs. Once Trump’s largest political donor in the 2024 election, Musk turned against the president over what he viewed as excessive domestic spending.

Musk fiercely criticized Trump’s sweeping economic agenda particularly the controversial One Big Beautiful Bill, which he said would saddle the country with unsustainable debt.

“They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk declared earlier in the week, referencing lawmakers who supported the bill despite campaigning on fiscal restraint.

Following passage of the bill, tensions escalated, with Trump hinting at potential retaliation against Musk.

“We’ll have to take a look,” Trump said when asked whether he would consider deporting Musk, a South African-born entrepreneur who became a U.S. citizen in 2002 and defund his companies.

In support of his new party’s launch, Musk cited a poll he conducted on July 4th, U.S Independence Day, asking followers whether they desired “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” The poll received over 1.2 million responses.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk posted on Saturday.

He also shared a meme on X featuring a two-headed snake with the caption: “End the Uniparty.”

While it remains uncertain how the America Party will affect the upcoming 2026 midterms or the 2028 presidential election, Musk laid out a preliminary roadmap.

He proposed targeting a small number of key races to gain influence.

“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” he wrote.

All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives will be contested in 2026, along with roughly one-third of the Senate’s 100 seats.

Critics quickly weighed in on Musk’s move, warning that third-party campaigns often fracture votes and unintentionally help opposing candidates. One user on X wrote:

“You are pulling a Ross Perot, and I don’t like it.”

Nigeria Was On The Brink Before Tinubu Took Over – NSA Ribadu

National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has said Nigeria was on the verge of collapse prior to President Bola Tinubu’s assumption of office in May 2023.

He made this assertion while addressing attendees at the 50th anniversary of the Nigerian Defence Academy’s 18th Regular Course in Abuja on Friday.

Ribadu attributed the country’s fragile state at the time to widespread insecurity and economic turbulence, outlining what he described as five persistent and critical security threats across different regions.

“When this administration took office on May 29, 2023, the security situation was threatening the very cohesion, stability, and integrity of our Nigerian state,” Ribadu said.

“We inherited five intractable security challenges that had brought our nation to the brink.”

According to him, these challenges included the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East, banditry in the North West and North Central, separatist movements in the South East, oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta, and rising urban crime nationwide.

Ribadu explained that Boko Haram and its affiliates had taken over 35,000 lives and displaced millions.

He also cited statistics from conflict-tracking bodies, stating that banditry had killed more than 12,000 people and displaced over a million, with around the same number of children out of school by late 2021.

He pointed to a series of violent incidents in 2022 and 2023 as examples of the fragile security situation.

These included the Abuja-Kaduna train bombing, an attack on Guards Brigade personnel in Abuja, the massacre at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, and the jailbreak at Kuje Correctional Centre.

On the topic of separatist violence, Ribadu disclosed:

“Between October 2020 and June 2021, the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, ESN, were responsible for attacks on 164 police stations, the deaths of 128 officers, and the injury of 144 more.”

“30 prison attacks were recorded, including a jailbreak in Umuahia in which 1,841 inmates escaped.”

He also shared figures from recent counter-insurgency operations.

“Our operations in the North East have yielded results. Over 13,543 terrorists and criminals eliminated, 124,408 Boko Haram fighters and family members surrendered, 11,118 weapons recovered, and more than 252,000 rounds of ammunition destroyed.”

Speaking on the situation in the oil-rich Niger Delta, Ribadu highlighted progress in curbing illegal refining and boosting production.

“Our oil production today rose to an average of 1.8 million from 1 million that we inherited,” he said.

“All oil pipelines are now green and operational. 1,978 illegal refineries, 3,849 dug-out pits, and 3,773 cooking ovens have been destroyed.”

He further noted that oil production was set to resume in Ogoni land for the first time in over 30 years.

Turning to the South East, Ribadu emphasized a decline in separatist influence and improved law enforcement presence.

“We are containing the separatist agitation through strategic operations and community engagements. Stay-at-home orders are becoming increasingly ineffective,” he said.

“Over 50 police stations destroyed in earlier attacks had been rebuilt,” Ribadu added, noting that “security personnel had returned to their posts in many affected areas.”

While acknowledging that some issues persist, the NSA concluded that the Tinubu administration’s multi-pronged approach is gradually stabilizing the country.
