2027 Coalition: ADC State Chairmen Affirm Full Commitment

The Forum of State Chairmen of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has refuted circulating reports claiming that some members oppose using the party for the upcoming coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The report suggested that ADC was divided into two factions, led by National Chairman Dr. Ralphs Okey Nwosu and Kogi State Chairman Kingsley Ogga respectively.

However, Ogga, who also serves as Chairman of the ADC Chairmen’s Forum, dismissed the report as “not only misleading but outdated.”

He explained, “The internal leadership dispute referenced in the publication has since been resolved amicably through an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process.”

Ogga further revealed that as a result, “the case was formally withdrawn and struck out by the Supreme Court and Federal High Court in Abuja respectively.”

Insisting on the party’s unity, Ogga said, “The ADC remains strong, united, and fully committed to its role in the growing coalition movement, offering Nigerians a credible alternative anchored on integrity, transparency, and democratic excellence.”

Speaking alongside fellow chairmen Clement Ehigiator (FCT), Kennedy Odion (Edo State/Secretary of the Forum), High Leader Sampson (Rivers State), and Dom Norman (Abia State), Ogga disclosed that he had instructed his lawyer to withdraw the lawsuit earlier this year.

In a letter dated February 11, 2025, addressed to his lawyer Kolawole Olowookere and titled “Withdrawal of Lawsuit Against ADC,” Ogga wrote:

“The internal dispute that led to the legal action has been amicably resolved through the party’s internal conflict resolution mechanisms, with the involvement of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Department.”

“Given that all outstanding issues have been settled satisfactorily, there is no further need for litigation. Kindly take the necessary legal steps to discontinue the case at the appropriate court.”

“Please provide me with an update on the process at your earliest convenience,” he added.

Insiders Aiding Benue Killers – Defence Chief

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, raised serious concerns on Monday about possible insider collaboration with the attackers responsible for the recent spate of killings in Benue State.

Our correspondent reports that armed invaders killed at least 100 people on Saturday in the Yelewata community of Guma Local Government Area.

General Musa, who visited the scene to assess the situation and commiserate with Governor Hyacinth Alia and the people of Benue, revealed that security agencies suspect some individuals within the affected communities are supplying vital information to the attackers.

“In my estimation, it is one killing too many. We have observed that the way some of the burnings were carried out shows they were targeted. It indicates the presence of insiders compromising security efforts,” the CDS said.

He emphasised the importance of collective involvement in the fight to secure the environment and indicated that a change in military strategy was underway.

He assured that the military would work more closely with local stakeholders to tackle the crisis.

“We are going to change our strategies to look inwards. But we cannot do it alone. We need the communities to be part of this effort,” he said.

General Musa also disclosed that consultations with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and local communities have already commenced in an effort to rebuild trust and foster collaboration.

“There may be issues of trust and we are going to address them. We want this to be the last attack of this nature. We will go all out to ensure peace is restored,” he added.

The defence chief further announced plans to visit Nasarawa State to enhance border security coordination, which he described as crucial in preventing cross-border attacks.

“We always receive information that these attackers are coming from across the borders. Wherever they are coming from, we will go after them. We must not wait for them to strike first,” he said.

Addressing the youth, General Musa urged them not to lose hope, insisting that Nigeria must not surrender to violence.

“This is our country. We can never give up our country for anything. And this madness must stop,” the CDS declared.

Responding to the CDS’s visit, Maurice Orwough, Chairman of Guma Local Government Area, expressed that the visit brought renewed hope to the people.

Speaking on the sidelines, Orwough said, “The visit of the Chief of Defence Staff gives our people in Guma LGA a sense of hope. It shows that the Nigerian government is genuinely concerned about the situation in Benue State. This visit allows us to provide him with first-hand information about what is happening here and what we need.”

He added that the visit would help restore residents’ trust in the federal government.

“The quick response from the authorities gives our people some confidence that the government is paying attention. It is a sign of hope for us,” Orwough said.

Chelsea Open Club World Cup With 2-0 Win Over LAFC

Chelsea began their 2025 Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory against Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC on Monday in Group D, though the match was played in front of a disappointingly low attendance at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez gave the Blues a strong start in what proved to be a competitive encounter against one of the three MLS teams in the tournament.

New signing Liam Delap made his Chelsea debut as a substitute, providing an assist for Fernandez’s goal.

Chelsea, fresh off winning the UEFA Conference League and securing Champions League qualification, are aiming to reassert themselves among football’s elite.

Despite an encouraging turnout over the weekend, only around 22,000 fans showed up to the 71,000-capacity stadium for Monday’s afternoon kickoff, leaving nearly 50,000 empty seats.

The roof was closed to shield spectators from Georgia’s humidity and summer heat, but the low crowd was blamed on the early weekday kickoff time, which was scheduled to accommodate British TV audiences.

LAFC, who earned their spot after beating Club America and replacing the banned Mexican side Club Leon, played all their group matches away from California.

The stadium’s top tier was closed off, with other sections only partially occupied, despite ticket price drops in the days leading up to the match.

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was tested several times in the first half, including saves from LAFC’s Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke, while Cole Palmer narrowly missed with a shot over the bar.

Jackson, eager to cement his place in the starting lineup, played a key role in Chelsea’s opening goal by releasing Neto with a precise through ball.

Neto then skillfully maneuvered past defender Ryan Hollingshead to score a powerful finish past Hugo Lloris, LAFC’s experienced keeper.

In the second half, former Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud entered for LAFC, hoping to boost their attack, but Sanchez continued to keep his goal secure.

Chelsea coach Maresca introduced Delap after the hour mark.

The young striker made an immediate impact by driving into space and setting up Fernandez’s second goal.

Fernandez controlled Delap’s cross and finished expertly, sealing the win.

LAFC threatened late in the match, with defender Marc Cucurella blocking a shot, but Chelsea maintained control until the final whistle.

Later on Monday, Group D action continues with Esperance Tunis facing Flamengo from Brazil.

2027: No Automatic Ticket For You; Only Tinubu Can Decide Your Fate, APC Tells Shettima

Mustapha Salihu, the National Vice Chairman (North East) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has made it clear that the decision regarding Vice President Kashim Shettima’s role in the 2027 elections rests solely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Salihu made this statement during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Monday.

The statement comes after a wave of controversy on Sunday when APC North-East stakeholders, at a meeting held in Gombe, Gombe State, endorsed President Tinubu for re-election without mentioning Shettima.

However, Salihu clarified that the North East APC’s endorsement of Tinubu was unconditional.

He explained, “We cannot as North East APC stakeholders, because our son is the vice president, endorse Asiwaju with condition. We cannot do that. We are endorsing Asiwaju unconditionally.”

“And given the fact that constitutionally it is only one ticket we have, we don’t have the vice president ticket. If we put the words in Asiwaju’s mouth and we now say we have endorsed Kashim Shettima, we are putting the cart before the horse.”

Salihu added, “This is not unconnected with the fact that some people are still practising the politics of 1979. Politics has moved from barbarism and decadence without passing that kind of civilization.”

He continued, “How can you think that by bringing such thugs into the summit to be threatening people will now show your popularity in the zone? We are endorsing Asiwaju unconditionally. We are proud that Kashim is our son, we respect him and we stand by him.”

Concluding his remarks, Salihu said, “But it is the prerogative of Asiwaju to determine whether Shittima is going to be his running mate or not. But we are not endorsing Asiwaju without conditions.”

Court Remands Woman Over Alleged N13.8bn Ponzi Fraud

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has ordered the remand of Precious Williams over her alleged role in a massive ₦13.8 billion Ponzi scheme.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed in a statement on Monday that Williams was arraigned on a 14-count charge.

The charges involve conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretence, and money laundering.

Williams is said to be a director at Glossolalia Nigeria Ltd and Pelegend Nigeria Ltd.

According to the EFCC, she allegedly received billions of naira linked to Maxwell Chizi Odum and MBA Trading and Capital Investment Ltd, both currently at large, who reportedly defrauded over 3,000 Nigerians by promising investment returns of 10% to 15% monthly.

One of the charges reads:
“That you, Precious Williams of Glossolalia Nigeria Limited; Pelegend Nigeria Limited, Phenom 413 Events Limited (company representative at large) and Doxasterz Oil and Gas Limited, sometime between the 24th day of August, 2019 and 15th day of February, 2020, at Port Harcourt, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, directly took possession of the sum of Ten Billion Naira (N10,000,000,000.00) only from Maxwell Chizi Odum (still at large) and MBA Trading and Capital Investment Limited (at large) through your Sterling Bank PLC Account No. 0064260799, when you reasonably ought to have known that the said funds formed part of the proceeds of the unlawful activities, of Maxwell Chizi Odum (still at large) and MBA Trading and Capital Investment Limited (at large) of obtaining money under false pretence from one Christian I. Agadaga and over three thousand (3000) other unsuspecting members of the Nigerian public, under the pretext that it was for investment purposes that will yield for them 10% to 15% interest per month, and you, thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15 (2)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended) and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act.”

Another charge revealed that Williams allegedly received ₦1.005 billion through a Polaris Bank account registered to Pelegend Nigeria Ltd, also tied to the same fraudulent scheme.

During Monday’s proceedings, Williams pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Prosecuting counsel, E.K. Bakam, requested that the court fix a trial date and remand the defendant in custody. However, Williams’ defence counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Tochukwu Maduka, informed the court that a bail application had been submitted.

Bakam opposed the application, arguing that it was premature since it had been filed before the amended charges and before the formal arraignment.

In her ruling, Justice S.I. Mark ordered that Precious Williams be held at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre.

The judge adjourned the case to June 17, 2025, for the bail hearing.

Ghana Drunkards Association Threatens Protest Over Soaring Alcohol Prices Despite Cedi Gains

The Ghana Drunkards Association has issued a three-week ultimatum to the government, demanding an immediate reduction in the cost of alcoholic beverages, citing the recent rise in the value of the cedi.

In a video that went viral on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the group’s president, Moses Drybones, expressed frustration over the persistent price hikes, despite the cedi’s significant appreciation against foreign currencies.

“To date, the prices of alcoholic drinks keep going up. If you purchase alcohol, there is an increment of about 15%, and this affects vendors,” Drybones said.

According to the association, the strengthening of the local currency should have translated to reduced prices across the board, including for alcohol. But that hasn’t been the case.

“We’ve learnt that the cedi has gained some strength and the price of some items has been reduced. However, the cost of alcohol remains high,” another representative declared in the video.

The association also pointed to the struggles of bar owners and drink sellers nationwide, blaming the price hikes for declining sales and hardship among vendors.

They appealed to key figures, including former President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Trade and Industry, to intervene.

“We are therefore calling on President John Dramani Mahama and his Minister for Trade and Industry to do something about the prices,” the group said.

The Drunkards Association stressed that their demand goes beyond just alcoholic drinks.

“We are not making this call for only alcoholic drinks but for the non-alcoholic ones as well,” they clarified.

They warned that if the government fails to engage with them within the three-week window, the association’s estimated 16.6 million members will launch a nationwide protest.

“We have given them a three-week grace period to meet us so we can deliberate on how to reduce the prices of alcohol,” the group insisted.

Their protest threat comes amid reports by Bloomberg that the Ghanaian cedi has appreciated by nearly 50% in 2025, making it the best-performing currency globally so far this year.

The cedi, which opened the year around ₵15 to the dollar, is now trading close to ₵10.

Despite this economic rebound, the association claims the price of alcohol, largely made up of imported products, has not seen a corresponding decrease.

You Won’t Win This War; Return To Negotiations Before It’s Too Late – Trump Warns Iran

U.S President Donald Trump on Monday issued a stern warning to Iran, urging the country to return to the negotiating table amid its ongoing tensions with Israel.

Speaking to reporters during a G7 summit in Canada, Trump said Iran is faring poorly in its confrontation with Israel and should consider immediate talks to avoid further deterioration.

“They have to make a deal, and it’s painful for both parties, but I’d say Iran is not winning this war, and they should talk, and they should talk immediately, before it’s too late,” Trump stated.

His comments come amid heightened hostilities between Iran and Israel, with growing concerns about a broader regional conflict.

Trump has repeatedly pressured Iran to engage in fresh talks following his administration’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal..

Governor Okpebholo Returns Schools To Missionaries

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has given the green light for the return of schools to missionary organisations, reversing a policy that dates back to the 1970s.

The development was confirmed after a meeting between the governor and Bishop Gabriel G. Dunia of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi on Monday at the Government House in Benin City.

In a statement released by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo noted that a committee would be constituted to determine which schools would be handed over.

He added that schools currently undergoing government-led renovations would remain under state management until those projects are completed.

Schools likely to be affected by the handover include several long-standing Catholic institutions such as Our Lady of Fatima College, Auchi; St. Angela’s Grammar School, Uzairue; St. John Grammar School, Fugar; St. Peter’s Grammar School, Agenebode; St. James’s Grammar School, Afuze; St. Joseph College, Otuo; St. Mary Grammar School, Eme-Ora; and St. Aloysius Gonzaga Grammar School, Ososo.

These institutions were among those taken over by the civil government in the 1970s during a national wave of educational reform.

Bishop Dunia, speaking on the significance of the decision, said the Church had made repeated appeals to past governments without success until Governor Okpebholo’s administration.

He stressed the broader purpose of the schools within the Church’s mission.

“Ideal moral character, which constitutes the bedrock of a good society,” he said, is as important as intellectual development.

He added that the Church viewed the schools as essential tools for shaping not only minds but values.

Youth Conference Will Be Inclusive, Non-Partisan, FG Assures

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the upcoming National Youth Conference 2025 will be youth-led, inclusive, and non-partisan.

The event is expected to serve as a platform for young Nigerians to influence national policy and development directly.

With the theme, ‘Next Gen Nigeria: Crafting Solutions, Owning the Future,’ the conference will focus on key youth-related issues such as unemployment, education, healthcare, and political participation.

The announcement was made on Monday during a joint press briefing in Abuja attended by major stakeholders.

These included the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande; Chairman of the National Planning Committee, Olubunmi Olusanya; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Citizenship and Leadership, Rinsola Abiola; NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku; and Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong.

Minister Olawande announced the opening of the registration portal, which will close on June 30, encouraging young Nigerians to register and make their voices heard.

“This is more than just a conference. It is a generational turning point, a national movement, and a call to action. Under the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the youth confab 2025 will be inclusive, non-partisan, and youth-led,” he said.

He further stressed the government’s intention to produce lasting change through the event.

“We are not rushing this process. Our aim is to create a lasting impact, moving beyond social media debates and financial inclusion discussions. We are committed to comprehensive youth reform,” he added.

Also speaking, Hon. Olubunmi Olusanya, head of the National Planning Committee, framed the initiative as a productive response to the challenges young people face.

“When individuals are unable to express their grievances, frustration ensues. This platform is about transforming that frustration into action,” he stated.

While acknowledging the lack of a formal budget at present, Olusanya noted ongoing efforts to raise funding.

“We are proceeding with faith, guided by the grace of God and the spirit of this ministry,” he remarked.

Rinsola Abiola, the President’s aide on Citizenship and Leadership, assured the public that all youth demographics would be welcomed and represented.

“No young person will be excluded on the basis of creed, ability, gender, or faith. Everyone is welcome,” she said.

From the Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku called attention to the importance of redirecting youth engagement toward constructive dialogue.

“We aim to redirect the energy currently spent on social media towards this platform. The government is ready to listen and act,” he stated.

Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong emphasized the demographic power of Nigerian youth and the transformative potential of their mobilization.

“If we can mobilise this demographic effectively, no country will surpass us in GDP or progress. This is a historic opportunity,” he declared.

He also pointed to legislative support, saying:

“We are committed to implementing the results. This initiative is historic and will be a significant milestone under President Tinubu’s leadership.”

The 2025 National Youth Conference is set to host 36,000 participants from all 360 federal constituencies.

Its hybrid format will include both online consultations and in-person deliberations.

Final resolutions will be submitted to the Federal Executive Council and National Assembly for action and possible integration into future legislation or policy.

Benue Residents May Be Forced To Defend Themselves – David Mark Warns

Former Senate President, David Mark, has raised alarm over the growing insecurity in Benue State, warning that continued killings could push residents to take the law into their own hands in a bid for self-preservation.

In a statement released on Monday through his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Mark condemned the unrelenting attacks on Benue communities, describing the situation as “tragic and senseless.”

“This is the sad reality confronting our people. If nothing is done, they may be forced to take their safety into their own hands,” he said, warning that the state’s deteriorating security could soon leave citizens with no choice but self-defense.

Mark criticized the government’s perceived failure to protect lives and property, saying such inaction was eroding public trust.
“When the government fails in this duty, it betrays the trust of the people,” he stated.

He called on the federal authorities to take immediate steps to halt the violence and restore peace to the region, stressing the urgency of the matter.

He also appealed to the Benue State government to strengthen internal security mechanisms and reclaim stability in affected areas.

Mark further encouraged traditional rulers, community heads, and residents to cooperate with security agencies and maintain vigilance.

“This is not the time for silence. Communities must stand firm and support all genuine efforts to end this crisis,” he urged.

While expressing deep sympathy for the victims and their families, Mark cautioned citizens against taking unlawful actions, calling instead for unity and resilience.

“Our people have suffered enough. But even in pain, we must not resort to lawlessness. Let us show resilience, support one another, and resist fear,” he said.
