Bill Gates Says Nigeria’s Health Budget Insufficient To Tackle Challenges

US billionaire and Chair of the Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, has raised concerns about Nigeria’s health budget, describing it as too small to effectively address the country’s health challenges.

Speaking to journalists yesterday in Lagos during the inaugural Goalkeepers event by the Gates Foundation in Nigeria, Gates highlighted the pressure that health budgets are under, especially with the ongoing aid cuts.

He stated, “There will be less money for health in Nigeria next year than this year.”

Gates pointed out that the inadequate funding partly explains why Nigeria has the world’s second-highest rates of maternal and child mortality.

He explained, “The amount of money Nigeria spends on healthcare is very, very small. So I don’t know why you would have expected that number to go down. If a mother delivers at home, there are certain complications that you can’t solve.”

He elaborated on the challenges faced in northern Nigeria, saying, “What countries like India do is that they drive delivery into centres where they can give C-sections, but that takes money.”

“So in northern Nigeria, about half the births are at home, and even the ones that aren’t at home, many of those centres can’t do C-sections. So, unfortunately, you’re going to have a maternal mortality problem because of that.”

The Gates Foundation is working on affordable technologies such as an ultrasound scanning device to identify high-risk deliveries.

Gates said, “So the 10 per cent it identifies as high-risk, hopefully you can take them on to a medical facility, even though that might not be easy, and the other 90 per cent you can stay in the community.”

He also highlighted an effective bleeding intervention trial, noting, “Our bleeding intervention, where we had a trial that was so impactful that it was stopped early.”

“There’s actually an amazing doctor at the hospital who ran that study, and it is just an incredible thing because this is cheap.”

Gates warned that in almost every African country, reductions in funding would result in a significant rise in deaths.

He emphasized the foundation’s commitment to ensuring children born in Nigeria have equal opportunities as those in the richest countries, saying, “I think we can make a lot of progress, even though in the near term, it’s an awful situation that the aid budgets are being cut significantly, and in some cases without any sort of warning at all. And that’s tragic.”

He called for a reduction in aid cuts or their restoration, adding, “I will advocate that the cuts be minimised or that we get them restored when we can. But, you know, I won’t be able to get them.”

Responding to whether the Gates Foundation can fill the funding gap caused by US aid cuts, Gates said, “There’s nobody who can match that U.S. government money. And the European money is all coming down. We have, like, a 40% decrease from Germany, from the U.K. In their case, it’s less ideological and more to do with just getting money for Ukraine or ageing society.”

He clarified the foundation’s financial limitations, stating, “Well, the problem with the Gates Foundation is that we don’t have some special bucket of money. We spend more every year, and all my money will be spent.”

“And so no matter what the other people do, it’s the same amount of money. If they increase, I’ll still spend my money. If they disappear, I’ll still spend my money. So my money is not extra money.”

Gates noted that Nigeria managed to mobilize an additional $200 million, but warned, “that’s not anywhere close to the money that’s disappearing.”

“And you’re yet to see what happens when UNICEF gets cut, and Gavi gets cut, and Global Fund gets cut. So people don’t like speaking up about it, but this is terrible.”

PDP Begs Peter Obi To Rejoin Party Amid Coalition Talks

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has appealed to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra governor, to return to its fold.

Obi, who ran as the PDP’s vice presidential candidate alongside Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 elections, left the party prior to the 2023 polls.

In a communiqué signed by the Anambra PDP chairman, Chidi Chidebe, the party maintained that any attempt to form a coalition ahead of the 2027 elections may not produce the desired results.

“The committee extends an open invitation to all aggrieved and former members of the PDP in Anambra, particularly our revered former governor, Mr Peter Obi, to return home and reunite with the now rejuvenated and restructured PDP,” the communiqué read.

“We will gladly welcome our brothers and sisters back to join us in the collective quest for a better Nigeria,” it continued.

The party also called on residents of the state to maintain their strong support for the PDP.

“We call on the good people of Anambra to remain steadfast in their historic support for the PDP and to come out en masse to vote for our candidates.”

Obi has recently been in conversations with Atiku Abubakar and other political figures on forming a united front to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Confirming the discussions, Atiku’s spokesman, Paul Ibe, noted that talks are ongoing between opposition leaders.

“Well, you and I know that there have been ongoing discussions between Atiku Abubakar and some opposition leaders: Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai,” he said in a recent interview.

“Yes, it’s out there in the open. Discussion is still ongoing, and at the end of that discussion, they will come out with a position and the direction that we’re going to follow based on the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians.”

When asked about the possibility of a joint ticket between Obi and Atiku, Ibe responded, “What I’m saying, in effect, is that that ticket was viable in 2019, and it’s still viable today.

“But it is left to the individuals to be able to come to a determination as to how they proceed. So, let us not go ahead of them. They are talking,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State who left the APC earlier in the year, has joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which some believe may serve as the platform for the proposed coalition.

BREAKING: Governor Eno Finally Dumps PDP, Pitches Tent With APC

In a major political development, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor explained that his move is motivated by the need to align the state with the federal government and maintain political relevance in the lead-up to future elections.

Speaking at a town hall meeting with stakeholders and constituents in Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, Governor Eno revealed that his decision came after months of extensive discussions with influential political figures across Akwa Ibom State.

He stated, For some time now, the political space—particularly in this state and the nation in general—has been awash with the news of my likely movement from the PDP, the platform that provided the levers and ladder for my political ascendancy to the position of governor.”

Governor Eno reassured that his defection does not mean abandoning the principles that brought him to office. Citing the Dalai Lama, he said, “We should always be open to change, but not let go of our shared values.”

On Wednesday morning, Eno confirmed he had formally submitted his resignation letter from the PDP to the party’s ward chairman, with copies sent to both the state and national PDP chairmen.

He expressed appreciation, saying, “I want to thank the People’s Democratic Party for their support, for their love, and for working with me in these past two years in the affairs of running the state of Akwa Ibom—across party lines.”

Despite his gratitude, Governor Eno described the moment as pivotal for Akwa Ibom, stressing the need for progress.

“I have therefore decided, after due consultation with all the critical stakeholders across the length and breadth of this state over the last three months, that it is time to move,” he stated.

“I believe that no one has ever moved progressively or changed party in this state after consulting as widely as I have done.”

He added that he held an in-depth meeting with key PDP stakeholders the previous evening at the same venue to explain his reasons for leaving the party.

“As the children of Issachar, we must be able to interpret the times and flow with the times, not run against the tide,” he declared.

With this announcement, Governor Eno joins the growing number of prominent South-South politicians switching allegiance to the APC, a move seen as strategic ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Concluding his remarks, he declared, “I have therefore decided to progressively move to the All Progressives Congress,” as the crowd responded with chants of support.

Governor Eno’s defection closes a more than 20-year chapter with the PDP, during which he transitioned from business leadership to politics, served as Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, and was elected governor in 2023 under the party’s platform.

PDP Defends May 27 NEC Meeting, Counters Wike, Anyanwu’s Claims

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has defended the legitimacy of its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on May 27, 2025, insisting it was convened in line with the party’s constitution.

This response comes amid objections from key party figures, including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike and embattled National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, who both claimed the meeting was invalid.

Wike argued that the NEC could not be considered official because it was not convened by Anyanwu, the party’s National Secretary.

He described it instead as merely a “stakeholders’ meeting.”

Anyanwu echoed the same position while speaking to journalists last week in Abuja.

He stated, “Apart from the fact that I did not call for the meeting, the PDP leadership’s decision to allow Chief Ali Odefa, the deputy national chairman (South East), into the meeting has made the NEC a nullity.”

He claimed Odefa had been suspended at the ward, local government, and state levels, disqualifying him from attending the meeting.

“The gathering could only be called a stakeholders’ meeting,” Anyanwu emphasized.

However, addressing the controversy during an interactive session at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, maintained that the NEC meeting was properly convened.

“This party operates a constitution, and it talks about how to convene a NEC meeting. The constitution is very clear. It is the chairman of the party that summons NEC,” Ologunagba stated.

He added, “You can recall that the chairman, after the 600th NWC meeting, which you all covered, he gave you notice or summoned and gave you a date. Also at the NEC meeting, the chairman presided.

“So if the chairman presided, I would be wondering why it would not be a NEC meeting,” he said.

Brushing aside the dispute, Ologunagba emphasized the PDP’s broader focus on party unity and democratic progress.

“But again, we have gone beyond all of that. It’s in the public domain that this party is trying to get together in unity and ensure that we work together, not just for the party, not just for our individual interest, but the overall interest of the Nigerian people and democracy.”

Despite ECOWAS Exit, Alliance Of Sahel States Invited To West Africa Economic Summit

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) comprising Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, has been invited to participate in the upcoming West Africa Economic Summit (WAES) in Abuja, despite their official withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) earlier this year.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed this during a private sector roundtable held in Lagos.

The three Sahel nations, all currently under military rule, formally exited ECOWAS on January 29, 2025, following a year-long notice period after announcing their departure.

The withdrawal came amid rising diplomatic tensions in the region.

However, Ambassador Tuggar emphasized that diplomatic relations remain in place.

“We have invited them,” he said, affirming continued ties between Nigeria and its northern neighbours.

“We also have, whether someone likes it or not, certain things that bring us together. For instance, we have the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission that has been doing so much good work,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of regional collaboration, the minister continued, “We have to put all of that aside and yes, we need them; we need the AES for security, but they need us too.”

The private sector roundtable marks the Ministry’s first formal engagement in the lead-up to WAES, which Tuggar described as a “strategic legacy initiative” championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other West African leaders.

The summit, scheduled for June 20–21 in Abuja, aims to transform regional economic structures from dependence to productivity while promoting integrated value chains.

It is expected to attract Heads of State, ministers, investors, and key regional institutions from across West Africa to discuss economic cooperation and sustainable growth.

Africa Raises Alarm As Trump Imposes New Travel Ban On 12 Countries

African leaders and citizens reacted with alarm on Thursday following U.S President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a sweeping travel ban on citizens from 12 countries, seven of which are in Africa.

Under the new executive order signed Wednesday, nationals from Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan are now barred from entering the United States.

The Trump administration cited national security and terrorism concerns as the primary justification.

In a swift response, the African Union (AU) criticized the move, warning that it would damage long-standing partnerships between the continent and the U.S.

The AU said in a statement the decision would harm “people-to-people ties, educational exchange, commercial engagement, and broader diplomatic relations” built over decades.

The organization urged Washington to take a different path: “It appealed to Washington to adopt a ‘consultative approach and to engage in constructive dialogue with the countries concerned’.”

Beyond Africa, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Haiti, Iran, and Yemen were also added to the full ban list.

Chad’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul expressed disbelief, telling AFP the country was “surprised by this announcement and even more by the terrorism-related reason (which) completely disregards Chad’s commitment and results in this area.”

In Mogadishu, the Somali government remained officially silent, but residents voiced frustration and heartbreak.

“I totally disagree with the president of the United States’ decision,” said Salad Abdullahi Mohamed.

“Somali immigrants reached there after a long, hazardous trip to get a better life,” he added.

Fellow resident Ali Abdullahi Ali agreed, saying migrants were just hoping “to make a better living and help their parents.”

He continued: “I would call on the president to make this decision null and void and also give the necessary documents to stay and continue living and working there.”

President Trump, who signed the order from the Oval Office, said the decision was made in response to a recent flamethrower attack at a pro-Israel protest in Boulder, Colorado, allegedly carried out by a man residing in the U.S. illegally.

In a video message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Trump declared: “The recent terror attack in Boulder, Colorado, has underscored the extreme dangers posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted.”

“We don’t want them,” he added.

The suspect, Mohammed Sabry Soliman, an Egyptian national, is accused of launching firebombs at protestors and spraying them with gasoline.

Homeland Security officials said he had overstayed a tourist visa and had applied for asylum in 2022.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson echoed the administration’s position: “President Trump is fulfilling his promise to protect Americans from dangerous foreign actors that want to come to our country and cause us harm.”

In addition to the 12 countries on the full ban list, the administration announced partial restrictions on seven others: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. Citizens of these countries may still receive temporary work visas.

Athletes from banned nations will be allowed to participate in international events hosted by the U.S, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, according to the order.

Trump also declared a halt on issuing visas for foreign students newly admitted to Harvard University, a move viewed as part of his wider crackdown on what he perceives as elite liberal institutions.

Rights groups condemned the policy. Amnesty International USA labeled the order “discriminatory, racist, and downright cruel.”

In Myanmar, a student who had just received her U.S. visa two days before the announcement told AFP: “We don’t really have life here, and people want to escape to a country where we can breathe, we can walk, we can study.”

“I think it’s very shocking,” she said.

Critics argue the ban revives the most controversial elements of Trump’s earlier travel policies and may face legal hurdles, as similar executive orders did during his first term.

The official proclamation noted that countries such as Afghanistan, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen lack “competent” authorities to manage passport and identity verification processes. Iran was designated due to its status as a “state sponsor of terrorism.”

Jamal Abdi, president of the National Iranian American Council, said: “The impact of the ban will once again be felt by Americans who were denied the ability to see their loved ones at weddings, funerals, or the birth of a child.”

For most countries on the list, the administration cited a high probability that visitors would overstay their visas.

Enugu Climate Advocate Aims To Break Guinness Record With 27,000 Trees In 24 Hours

An environmentalist, Micheal Odenigbo, has embarked on an extraordinary mission to set a new Guinness World Record by planting 27,000 trees within 24 hours.

The ambitious attempt began on Thursday, June 5, just after 4 pm, and is scheduled to conclude around the same time on Friday, June 6.

It is being held at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Agbani, in Enugu State.

The challenge coincides with World Environment Day and aims to surpass the current record of 23,060 trees planted in a single day by Canadian environmentalist Antoine Moses.

While the numbers are impressive, Odenigbo emphasized that the initiative is about more than world records.

“The aim is not just to break a record, but to make a significant input towards the combat against climate change,” he told DAILY GAZETTE in May.

According to Odenigbo, the initiative serves as a rallying call for climate action, especially in Nigeria, where deforestation and climate-related issues have become increasingly urgent.

He explained that the goal is to raise public awareness and encourage environmental responsibility.

“It aims to raise awareness, inspire action, and make a tangible contribution to combating climate change,” he stated.

The project emphasizes the role individuals can play in environmental restoration, showcasing how personal commitment can influence collective change.

The effort focuses on Moringa oleifera, a fast-growing, drought-resistant tree known for its ecological and nutritional benefits.

ESUT was selected as the venue due to its strong environmental orientation.

In a letter approving the use of a four-hectare area for the attempt, ESUT’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, expressed full support:

“The project aligns with the university’s Green Revolution and Environmental Sustainability Programme,” he said.

The university’s endorsement also matches the Enugu State Government’s broader climate action strategy.

ESUT, however, set terms for the event, including a requirement to maintain the newly planted trees for at least three months and to obtain necessary environmental permits.

Odenigbo’s application was officially accepted by Guinness World Records on January 14, 2025, under the title: “Most trees planted by an individual in 24 hours.”

The assigned reference number is 241216003153mtpb.

The attempt must follow strict rules:

All trees must be planted in a single, defined area.

Holes must be dug at the time of planting, without the use of digging machinery.

The entire process must be video recorded, with photos and a detailed logbook.

At least two independent witnesses must be present throughout—one of whom must be a qualified specialist, such as a botanist or arborist.

Witnesses must rotate every four hours, and the event must proceed non-stop for 24 hours. Rest breaks are allowed, but the clock continues to run.

Despite acknowledging the enormity of the task, Odenigbo remains hopeful and driven.

“On 5th of June 2025 (World Environmental Day), I will be attempting the Guinness World Record for the Most Trees Planted by an Individual in 24 hours,” he said.

He views the attempt not just as a personal feat, but as a call to action for all Nigerians:
“The challenge goes beyond breaking a world record,” he said.

“It seeks to highlight the impact of individual commitment to environmental restoration and to encourage others… to take meaningful action.”

Gunmen Attack Vigilante Office In Anambra, Set Vehicles, Building Ablaze

Unidentified gunmen launched a violent attack on a vigilante office in Umunze, located in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, in the early hours of Thursday.

According to reports, the assailants stormed the facility and set five operational vehicles ablaze, along with portions of the building used by the local security operatives.

An eyewitness who was near the scene recounted the incident, saying,
“The hoodlums invaded the premises in the early hours of Thursday and started shooting indiscriminately.”

“The matter got escalated when the security operatives, in an attempt to resist the gunmen during the gun duel recorded a fatal injury on one of the security operatives.”

Following the exchange of gunfire, the attackers reportedly fled the scene before security reinforcements could arrive.

“About five operational vehicles were set ablaze, and some parts of the security office also got burnt by the hoodlums, who later fled the scene before the arrival of the police-led joint security force,” the eyewitness added.

When reached for comment, the Anambra State Police Command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident.

He stated that security had now been restored in the area.

“The Police-led Joint Security Force had taken over the scene,” he said.

Authorities have yet to release further details regarding casualties or arrests, but investigations into the attack are said to be ongoing.

Prof. Utomi Says He May Leave Nigeria Over Alleged Plot To Silence Him

Prominent political economist and former presidential candidate, Prof. Pat Utomi, has revealed that he is considering leaving Nigeria, citing persistent attempts by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to suppress his voice and political activities.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, Utomi expressed deep frustration over what he described as ongoing efforts to silence him due to his criticisms of the government.

“I’m getting fed up with all of this. If they are ready to shut my voice, I am ready to go to Ghana or anywhere else and live peacefully,” Utomi stated.

Utomi’s comments come amid fresh legal action by the Department of State Services (DSS), which filed an application before the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to block Utomi and his associates from holding public gatherings related to a controversial “shadow government” initiative.

Filed through Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN), the DSS application urges Justice James Omotosho to issue an interlocutory injunction preventing Utomi from engaging in any rallies, protests, public lectures, or media activities regarding the case.

According to the DSS, the activities allegedly planned by Utomi upon his return to Nigeria on June 6, including road shows and interviews, represent a serious threat to public order.

The security agency had previously brought Utomi before the court in suit FHC/ABJ/CS/937/2025, accusing him of attempting to create a parallel or “shadow government”, an act the DSS argues is unconstitutional. The court has scheduled the hearing for June 25.

In its latest motion, the DSS claimed that if Utomi is not restrained, his activities would “constitute a serious threat to the public order, safety and national unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Reacting to the DSS action, Utomi confirmed that a team of lawyers led by Mike Ozekhome (SAN) had filed a formal defence on his behalf.

The former presidential hopeful insisted his actions are rooted in patriotic intent, not subversion. He emphasized his desire to create a better future for Nigeria’s youth — despite the backlash.

“I will retire next year and leave them to do whatever they want to do. I’m looking for a better country for the next generation. But politicians make it look like dissenting comments,” he said.

He added: “I want to inspire the next generation to be free and make progress. It is now up to them. It is up to the current generation to realise that there are people who don’t want their country to grow.”

FRSC Deploys 660 Personnel, 14 Vehicles For Eid-el-Kabir Special Patrol In Enugu

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has mobilized a total of 660 personnel and 14 operational vehicles for a week-long Special Patrol aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow and road safety during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in Enugu State.

Announcing the deployment on Thursday in Enugu, the Sector Commander of the FRSC Enugu State Command, Mr. Franklin Agbakoba, said the operation, tagged ‘OPERATION EID-EL-KABIR’, will run from June 5 to June 11, covering a full seven days.

According to him, the deployment includes 375 Regular Marshals and 285 Special Marshals. Additionally, the FRSC has stationed 14 vehicles, which comprise nine patrol vehicles, two power bikes, one emergency ambulance, one heavy-duty tow truck, and one light-duty tow truck.

Agbakoba explained that the goal of the operation is to ensure safe and uninterrupted vehicular movement and the swift removal of any obstructions on major highways and routes across the state.

“The objective of the operation is to enhance the Corps’ visibility on state’s roads through early deployment of personnel and logistics to ensure reduction in Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs),” he said.

He added, “This early and proactive deployment will ensure reduction in Road Traffic Fatalities (RTF), and Road Traffic Injuries (RTI) as well as strict enforcement of road traffic laws and regulations.”

The operation will focus on key road corridors within Enugu State, including the Ugwuonyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Dual Carriageway, the Eke Obinagu axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway, the Obolloafor section of the 9th Mile-Nsukka-Obolloafor Road, and the Opi axis of the Enugu-Nike-Opi Road, among others.

Agbakoba also stressed that emergency response and rescue teams will be on standby to address distress situations, enforce road traffic rules, and clear any obstructions swiftly.

“There will be prompt rescue and response to distress calls and speedy removal of obstructions from the highways among others,” he said.

“In this special Sallah Operation, there will be result-oriented public education and enlightenment, and enforcement of critical offences that induce Road Traffic Crashes,” the commander noted.

He listed offences that would receive special attention during the patrol, such as overloading, drunk driving, route violations, use of mobile phones while driving, speeding, and dangerous overtaking.

As the festivities begin, Agbakoba urged motorists to remain cautious and observe all safety measures.

“I wish all Nigerians a joyful and peaceful Eid Kabir celebration, and for those travelling a safe trip and for them to start their journey on time in the morning,” he added.
