Gov. Mbah Welcomes EPL Trophy, Calls For Guinness Partnership To Boost Sports In Enugu

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has called for deeper collaboration with Guinness Nigeria PLC to enhance sports development in the state, describing Enugu as a land rich in sporting history and future talent.

He made the appeal on Friday when a delegation from Guinness Nigeria presented the English Premier League (EPL) trophy to him at the Government House in Enugu.

The presentation was part of a tour facilitated through a partnership between Guinness Nigeria and the Premier League, aimed at bringing the iconic silverware closer to Nigerian fans.

Enugu was the first stop, with Lagos scheduled to follow over the weekend.

Addressing the Guinness team and guests at the Lion Building, Governor Mbah reiterated his administration’s commitment to using sports as a tool for youth engagement and unity.

“Like Guinness, we regard sports as a positive force in Enugu. We are not surprised that the Guinness flagship event is being held here in Enugu. Just like Guinness, we also see sports as a platform to foster social cohesion. We are not just paying lip service to sports; we actually have our skin in the game,” the governor said.

Highlighting the state’s current efforts, Mbah revealed that massive rehabilitation work was ongoing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village in preparation for the 2026 National Sports Festival.

“We believe that the EPL is quite a spectacle with audiences across the world and you couldn’t have chosen a better city for the flagship event than Enugu.

“Again, since here is the home of Rangers and since we have also recognised that this is where it all happens, let us begin to think about more collaboration with Guinness to see how we can secure endorsement with the Guinness corporate brand.”

“This should be on the table because Rangers also won the 2023/2024 Nigerian Premier League title.

“We are just about giving the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village a new lease of life, making sure they meet FIFA and World Athletics standards ahead of the National Sports Festival.”

“So, we look forward to more strategic collaboration with Guinness. We are quite a business-friendly state,” Mbah emphasized.

In his remarks, the Corporate Relations Director of Guinness Nigeria, Rotimi Odusola, explained the rationale for selecting Enugu as the first city for the EPL trophy showcase, praising the governor’s efforts and the state’s deep-rooted football culture.

“Some may wonder why Enugu. There is a reason for us to choose Enugu as the first place in Nigeria since this trophy arrived yesterday.”

“It is because we know that Enugu State is the spiritual home of football in Nigeria. As a young football lover, I can’t forget all of the stories around Enugu Rangers football team,” Odusola stated.

He went on to commend the transformation witnessed in the state since his last visit in 2022.

“I want to also appreciate you for the work you are doing. The last time I was in Enugu was in 2022 and I have seen remarkable improvements in Enugu State since my last visit.

“This presentation of the EPL trophy is an opportunity for us to reinforce Guinness Nigeria being a business that has been intricate in the fabric of Nigeria for 75 years.”

“We also want to use this opportunity to create magical moments for our consumers and members of the public through the collaboration between Guinness globally and the English Premier League,” he added.

The event drew the presence of key state officials and sports stakeholders, including the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu; Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke; Director of Marketing and Innovations at Guinness Nigeria, Yinka Bakare; Head of Marketing, Ramanathan Sollayepan; Head of Division for South-East Region, Adesoji Opeyemi; General Manager of Rangers International FC, Barr. Amobi Ezeaku; and the Chairman of Enugu State Football Association, Barr. Tony Ugwu.

Tinubu In A Closed-Door Meeting With Service Chiefs

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday held a high-level security meeting behind closed doors with Nigeria’s Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

In attendance were the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Although no official briefing was given at the end of the meeting, sources close to the presidency indicated that the talks may have been prompted by the increasing wave of insecurity across parts of the country.

In recent weeks, Nigerian security forces have faced renewed threats from insurgents, particularly in the northern regions.

The strategic meeting also comes on the eve of President Tinubu’s scheduled departure to Rome, where he is expected to participate in the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV.

According to Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president “will join global dignitaries and senior Catholic clergy for the solemn mass marking the beginning of the pontificate of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV—the 267th Bishop of Rome and new head of the Roman Catholic Church.”

Onanuga confirmed on Thursday that Tinubu had received a formal invitation from the Vatican, delivered through Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

The Vatican, he said, emphasized the importance of President Tinubu’s attendance at the ceremony, stating it comes at “a moment of particular importance for the Catholic Church and a world plagued by numerous tensions and conflicts.”

President Tinubu is expected to travel with a distinguished delegation, including Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs; Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria; Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja; Archbishop Alfred Martins of Lagos; and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese.

Kwankwaso No Longer A Member Of NNPP Since 2023 – National Chairman

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major, has declared that Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, former presidential candidate and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, is no longer associated with the party.

Speaking during an appearance on Daily Politics on Trust TV, Dr. Major emphasized that Kwankwaso ceased to be a member of the NNPP in 2023 and that the party has moved on from his involvement.

“Let me make it clear that there are more serious issues to talk about than to talk about Kwankwaso as a person. I’m not here to talk about him.”

“He’s become part of the history of NNPP. At a point, he came in, and at a point, he left with his Kwankwasiyya movement. So, I don’t want to talk about him,” he said.

Dr. Major pointed to court decisions validating this position.

“He’s gone by the provisions of the constitution of our party, and by the declarations that have been made across several courts of the land – the Abia high court judgement as well as the recent FCT high court.”

Reacting to recent defections from opposition parties, including the NNPP, the party chair highlighted that many of those who left had been core members of the Kwankwasiyya bloc.

“Kwankwaso came in with his people, the so-called Kwankwasiyya movement. And if you look at the CV of the people that have defected, you’d see that they were very active members of the Kwankwasiyya movement.”

“In fact, they were very instrumental to the success of the NNPP across Kano,” he explained.

According to him, these defections do not signal a crisis within the NNPP itself, but rather dissatisfaction with how the Kwankwasiyya group was being managed.

“Let me place it on record by saying that they didn’t defect from NNPP, because we are in touch with them.”

“All they keep telling us is that ‘we are with you, we have no problems with the party, we have no problems with the programs, but we have problems with the organisation that became part of you through which we came into the party and won election,’” he said.

Dr. Major cited the departure of key figures like Senator Kawu and two members of the House of Representatives as signs of growing discontent with Kwankwasiyya’s leadership style, but not with the NNPP as an institution.

“People have taken so much that they can’t stomach anymore. They’re telling the Kwankwasiyya movement ‘we are tired of what you are doing.”

“It has become a one-man show, we are tired of it, we are leaving’. But I can tell you that they are with us. We are in touch with them.”

He stressed the freedom politicians have within a democracy to choose their political paths.

“The beauty of democracy is the flexibility that politicians have to be able to move from one political party to the other.”

“If you are in a place where you are no longer comfortable, looking for instance at the vessels that brought you into that place, you are free and at liberty to walk away.”

Clarifying further, Dr. Major insisted, “But like I said, as a point of emphasis, I am still saying it and let it be on record that these people did not defect.”

While the public may interpret their departure as a defection, he argued that internally, the NNPP views them as allies who have merely distanced themselves from the Kwankwasiyya faction.

“These are people that we have had robust relationship with, and I will continue to place emphasis on that, that deep inside them, they know that they don’t have issues with the leadership of the NNPP.”

“The challenges that led to their departure have to do with the Kwankwasiyya movement and the way it is being run. The defectors are still our friends.”

When asked whether Kwankwaso’s rumored relationship with the presidency worried him, Dr. Major dismissed the concern.

“I want you to put yourself in my shoes. Would you be worried if somebody, who for over a year now is not being a member of your party, is walking into another political party? Why should that disturb you? Please let us discuss serious matters.”

“The man is gone. I told you that he is part of the history of NNPP. He came at a point and left. I don’t want to talk about him. I want to discuss things that would further enhance our operational capacity.”

He concluded firmly, “What I can tell you is that he is at liberty to go to wherever he wants, because we have no business with him. He ceased to be a member of this party since 2023 June.”

Labour Party Divided Into Three Factions In Lagos – LASIEC

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has raised concerns over the internal divisions within the Labour Party in Lagos, revealing that the party is currently split into three separate factions.

This revelation came from the LASIEC chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, during a stakeholders’ forum held on Thursday in Ikeja.

She explained that the existence of multiple factions is posing a challenge to the commission’s preparations for the upcoming local government elections.

According to her, “The division has complicated the commission’s ability to effectively engage with the party ahead of the forthcoming local government elections.”

LASIEC is now awaiting a formal directive from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine which of the Labour Party factions will be officially recognised for the July 12 polls.

Despite these complications, Justice Okikiolu-Ighile restated LASIEC’s commitment to delivering a credible electoral process across the state.

“The foundation of a credible electoral process lies in building public confidence and trust—an outcome that can only be achieved through collective participation and accountability,” she said.

In line with efforts to deepen inclusivity, the LASIEC chairman announced that free nomination forms will be available to certain groups through their political parties.

These include women, persons with disabilities, and youths.

She encouraged political stakeholders to take active roles in promoting internal democracy, mobilising voters, and supporting the commission’s goal of creating equal opportunities for all contestants.

“We urge political stakeholders to support the Commission’s efforts in creating a level playing field for all contestants,” she said.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile also reassured participants that LASIEC would continue engaging key interest groups to strengthen the electoral process.

Speaking at the same event, LASIEC Permanent Secretary, Folashade Omowole, emphasised the role of voter education in ensuring civic engagement and countering misinformation and electoral violence.

She reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to upholding democratic values.

“Credible elections reflecting the will of the people can only be achieved through collaboration, advocacy, and responsible leadership from all involved in the election process,” Omowole stated.

JUST IN: Explosion At Port Harcourt Filling Station Injures Five, Destroys Vehicles

At least five persons sustained injuries on Friday following a fire outbreak caused by an explosion at the cooking gas section of the Nobpet Filling Station, located opposite the Air Force junction in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Witnesses reported that the explosion led to a rapid spread of fire, engulfing approximately eight vehicles parked nearby, many of which belonged to a transport company operating close to the filling station.

It took the combined intervention of the Rivers State Fire Service and the Nigerian Air Force Fire Service to bring the flames under control.

One of the victims, Emmanuel Ninyaegwu, a commercial driver, said he was preparing to load passengers alongside his pregnant wife when the explosion occurred.

“I was getting ready to load my vehicle from Port Harcourt to Ebonyi State, when the incident occurred.”

“As I was opening my car boot, I heard the sound and I fell down, got up, and ran away. It damaged my vehicle. Some people got injured, including me, but nobody died,” he said.

“Some people, who got injured, were taken to the hospital. There was an ambulance that came in from the Air Force. They treated some people,” he added.

Ninyaegwu also noted that the initial response by the state fire service was hampered by limited water supply.

“Fire Service came, when they came, their water got finished, so help came from the Air Force, that was when they put out the fire.”

“Before the fire service came, the people around tried to put out the fire, but they couldn’t because it was too much and everyone was running for their lives,” he recalled.

Another affected individual, Anthony Ofoke, described the incident as a devastating experience. He said two of his vehicles were destroyed by the blaze.

“It was a calamity and an unexpected thing that just happened, I have never experienced such. After loading three vehicles, by the time I came back from the office, I heard the sound of the explosion, it was a bomb,” Ofoke said.

“I didn’t know what to do, but to run for my life. Before I could realize myself, look at where I got injured. My vehicles were affected, one of my buses and a Sienna.”

“As I speak, I am still shaken from the incident. The fire service people dressed the injury for me,” he added.

Calling for government intervention, Ofoke urged authorities to restrict the establishment of filling stations in residential areas.

“My appeal is for the government to stop them from building filling stations close to where people are living, before it will happen next time,” he said.

Fake EFCC Operatives Who Abducted University Students Nabbed

The Niger State Police Command has apprehended a criminal syndicate that posed as operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and abducted two students from their residence near Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida University, Lapai.

The abduction, which took place on the night of May 13, 2025, saw the suspects storm the off-campus student lodge and forcefully whisk the victims away in a Toyota Corolla with registration number ABJ 245 CU.

The gang, armed with tasers disguised as guns, also stole five mobile phones during the operation.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said that officers from the Lapai Division launched a prompt response and engaged the suspects in a high-speed chase along Suleja Road near Kwakuti.

The pursuit led to the arrest of three gang members: Emmanuel Linus (30), Hyelda Aliyu (28), and Abduljalid Tanko (33). A fourth suspect, identified as Alfa James, managed to escape and is currently at large.

Further investigation revealed that the kidnapping was a scheme for extortion.

According to the police, the suspects initially demanded N10 million in ransom from the students’ families, before reducing the amount to N500,000.

Abiodun stated that the suspects used forged EFCC identification cards, all bearing the same serial number, 1069.

The fake IDs were reportedly printed at a shop located in Nyanya, Abuja.

In a shocking development, police disclosed that one of the suspects, Emmanuel Linus, is a dismissed soldier who had previously served a prison term for a crime committed two years ago.

Additionally, two local collaborators, Mohammed Hassan and Hamisu Adamu, both residents of Lapai, were arrested for their role in the plot.

All five suspects are currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

Police say they will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.

NELFUND Announces Plan To Extend Student Loan Scheme To Private Institutions

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) may, within the next three years, extend its student loan initiative to learners in private institutions, according to the agency’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr.

Sawyerr made the disclosure on Thursday during a strategic engagement and sensitisation forum with institutional heads and education stakeholders in Enugu.

The session also featured outreach in local dialects to ensure wider understanding and participation in the scheme across the region.

While acknowledging the urgent financial needs of students in public tertiary institutions, Sawyerr explained that NELFUND’s immediate focus is on those in public universities and colleges.

He noted, however, that a broader inclusion is part of the long-term plan.

“We have only been going for one year. We need to really address the public sector first. These loans allow students to otherwise drop out for very small amounts of money,” he said.

“The students that we see in the public sector don’t even have the option, in most cases, to go to the private sector, and some of them are dropping out. So we want to address that, make sure that we’ve got them covered,” Sawyerr added.

He hinted at a future review of the scheme’s reach: “And then, when we see after a while, I think two, three years max, when we see the effect this has had on the generality of youth in Nigeria, we can then do some sort of review to see what it might mean for moving to the private sector segment.”

On the challenges encountered so far, Sawyerr pointed to issues common in new public service initiatives, such as mistrust and technical difficulties.

He said: “They just have a normal problem like everybody else has with technology, and then they say, this has been rigged against us. But we’re here. We’re not here to waste our time. We’re here to help the people apply and get institutions to also take part.”

Also speaking at the event, Dr. Chinyere Onyeisi, Special Adviser to the Enugu State Governor on Education Innovation, emphasized the importance of NELFUND’s support for the region.

She said “So what the government is doing has an essential role to play in different areas of education. But this NELFund has to do with the student support system. And our students in Southeast and Enugu in particular need to maximise the opportunity to apply.”

Onyeisi further encouraged school heads and teachers to take the message back to their communities.

“Because the major takeaway to the teachers, the heads of institutions that are here today is when they go back to their various schools, they are supposed to continue to step down the specialisation programme to make sure that the students understand the procedures, how to apply, and then apply effectively to benefit from this initiative. Because it’s real. And they are testifying that other states are already benefiting,” she said.

16 Year-Old Ebule Reveals What Helped Him Score 334 In JAMB

Oritsemeyiwa Precious Ebule, a 16-year-old student of Federal Government College, Warri, has shared the strategy behind his outstanding score of 334 in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Speaking with DAILY GAZETTE from Warri, Delta State, Ebule attributed his high performance to consistent academic discipline and a keen interest in learning beyond textbooks.

“The secret behind my JAMB score is not only because I read. From my SS1 to SS3, I have always had a good educational foundation, and I always listen to my teachers when they are teaching because there are some things that the teachers would say that are not in my book, so I pick up more information from what they say than what I read.”

“That’s what makes me different from others and why I got a very high score in my JAMB, 334,” he explained.

Ebule’s subject breakdown includes 98 in Mathematics, 98 in Physics, 85 in Chemistry, and 53 in English Language, summing up to a total of 334.

While many might expect such a student to feel certain of his score, Ebule admitted he didn’t anticipate such a high outcome.

“I was surprised,” he said, “not that I knew I couldn’t score that high, but during my Mock when I scored 326, it was easy. When I wrote my JAMB, it was a bit more difficult, yet I scored more. So, I was surprised.”

Reflecting on his emotions on exam day, he said, “I was a little afraid, but more confident because I had already studied.”

Looking ahead, the aspiring mechanical engineer expressed gratitude to his parents, acknowledging their role in his academic journey.

He said their constant support and commitment to his education played a major part in helping him succeed.

Application Opens For 2025 Kids Innovation Challenge For Young Nigerian Innovators

The Destiny Trust, a non-governmental organisation, has officially launched the 2025 edition of the Kids Innovation Challenge through its flagship programme, Kids Innovation Africa.

The initiative aims to spotlight young talents with inventive solutions to pressing issues affecting children and youth across Africa.

In a public statement announcing the commencement of applications, the organisers emphasized that the challenge, now in its third year, is specifically designed for children aged 10 to 17 enrolled in public and low-income private schools across Nigeria.

According to the statement, “Now in its third year, the Kids Innovation Challenge is open to children aged 10–17 in public and low-income private schools across Nigeria.

The competition invites entries that respond to one of the following pressing challenges:

‘1. Youth Unemployment: With over 60% of Africa’s unemployed being youth, and the continent projected to have the world’s largest population of young people by 2050, what ideas, tools, or platforms can unlock one million new job opportunities for African youth?

‘2. Access to Education: Millions of children in sub-Saharan Africa remain out of school. How can we leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver high-quality, low-cost education to every child—no matter where they live?

‘3. Healthcare Access: Most African countries have fewer than two doctors per 10,000 people. How can we use technology to expand access to essential health services and ensure that every household has access to a doctor?’”

Interested participants have until August 15, 2025, to submit their entries. From the pool of applicants, selected candidates will undergo interview sessions.

The final ten will then be invited to pitch their ideas before a panel comprising seasoned tech professionals, investors, and entrepreneurs.

According to the organisers, “Winners will share in N5 million worth of prizes, including mentoring, and tech skills learning opportunities to develop their ideas further.”

The Destiny Trust highlighted the transformative impact of the competition in recent years.

“Over the years, the Kids Innovation Challenge has evolved into a platform for discovering and nurturing young innovators.”

“Previous winners have proposed solutions in edtech, climate response, healthcare, and waste management, with some innovations already progressing into prototypes and pilot programmes.”

The group also emphasized the broader vision behind the initiative: “Our goal is to ignite the imagination of children from underserved backgrounds and give them the opportunity to become active contributors to Africa’s future.

“The Destiny Trust is on a mission to ensure the inclusion of underserved children not just in the socio-economic system, but importantly, in the new digital economy. We believe that ensuring digital equity is fundamental to the socio-economic inclusion of children from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

For those interested in learning more or submitting an application, further details can be found at www.kidsinnovation.africa/challenge.
