NNPP Suspends Senator, Three House of Rep Members Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has indefinitely suspended Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South, along with three members of the House of Representatives from Kano State, over alleged anti-party activities.

The affected lawmakers include Abdullahi Sani Rogo (Rogo Federal Constituency), Alhaji Abdullahi Rurum (Rano/Kibiya Federal Constituency), and Ali Maadakin Gini (Dala Federal Constituency).

Announcing the suspension at a press briefing on Monday, NNPP Chairman in Kano, Hashimu Dungurawa, stated that the decision was taken due to the lawmakers’ alleged gross misconduct.

Dungurawa criticized the suspended members, noting that they had been given opportunities within the party after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC), yet allegedly engaged in actions detrimental to the NNPP’s interests.

He emphasized that the party would not tolerate disloyalty, adding that necessary disciplinary measures had to be enforced to uphold party discipline.

2027: Tinubu Will Be Re-Elected By ‘The Power Of God’ – Umahi

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will serve two terms as Nigeria’s leader, stating that he must be re-elected in the 2027 general elections by the “power of God.”

Speaking on Sunday at a stakeholders meeting on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Phase 1 at the Eko Hotel in Lagos, Umahi praised Tinubu’s leadership, particularly his commitment to long-term infrastructure projects.

“A man that has the courage to do what was dreamt 45 years back is the only man that will have the courage to finish it,” he said.

“I say we must vote for him in 2027. The President must be re-elected by the power of God. Those in support say ‘hi.’”

Umahi emphasized that Tinubu has been fair to the South-East since assuming office in 2023 and assured that the region would support his re-election bid.

He highlighted several federal projects in the South-East as proof of the administration’s commitment to national development.

“We have no reason to stop the work but we have every reason to do the right thing, and it is not peculiar to that job, that is what we are doing in all the projects,” he noted.

“We also have some jobs – Enugu to Abakaliki, we have Afikpo-Abia-Okigwe and of course one of the legacy projects of Mr President and so we are not sabotaging the President.”

The former Ebonyi State governor further stated that the South-East would rally behind Tinubu and ensure his re-election with overwhelming support.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is going to have 99 per cent of the votes of the South-East because he has been very nice to the people of the South-East. They will leave South-West to give us 99.99% (in) 2027,” he added.

Full List: 15 States Fail To Elect Female Lawmakers

Fifteen states in Nigeria, including Abia, Rivers, Zamfara, and Kano, failed to elect any female representatives in their state assemblies during the 2023 general election, raising fresh concerns about gender inclusion in governance.

This was revealed by social inclusion and governance expert, Olumide Olaniyan on Monday in Abuja during a technical session on the Seat Reservation for Women Bill and the public presentation of the National Women Leaders Forum’s operational guidelines.

The event, organized by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy in collaboration with the National Women Leaders Forum of Political Parties in Nigeria, highlighted the continued underrepresentation of women in Nigerian politics.

Olaniyan noted that the affected states cut across all six geopolitical zones, listing others such as Osun, Imo, Yobe, Bauchi, Niger, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kebbi, Katsina, and Sokoto.

He lamented that despite women making up 49 percent of Nigeria’s population, the country ranks 180th out of 192 nations in women’s parliamentary representation.

Meanwhile, Nigerian women are planning to storm the National Assembly to demand explanations from Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the alleged harassment of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.

Speaking at the event, former ActionAid Nigeria country director Ene Obi condemned the treatment of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling it unacceptable.

She warned that women would soon march to the National Assembly to demand justice.

The controversy erupted last week when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, chairperson of the Senate Committee on the Diaspora and Nongovernmental Organizations, protested the sudden relocation of her seat within the chamber.

Her refusal to move to the newly assigned seat led to a standoff with Senate President Akpabio, who declined to recognize her objections.

In response, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu appealed for calm, suggesting that the matter be handled through diplomatic channels.

1966 Coup: South East Youths Stakeholders Forum Demands National Apology, Justice For Ndi Igbo

The South East Youths Stakeholders Forum (SEYSF) has called on the Nigerian Army and the Federal Government to issue a formal national apology to the Igbo people over the long-standing mischaracterization of the January 15, 1966 coup as an “Igbo Coup.”

In a statement signed by the group’s chairman, Mazi (Dr.) Ezenwa A. A. Onyirimba, and made available to DAILY GAZETTE on Monday, the forum condemned this historical distortion, which it says has fueled hatred, persecution, and systemic marginalization of Ndi Igbo in Nigeria.

“For over five decades, Ndi Igbo have suffered untold hardship due to the deliberate and misleading branding of the 1966 coup as an ethnic conspiracy. This distortion of history led to retaliatory massacres, claiming the lives of thousands and culminating in the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970). Even after the war, the scars of political, economic, and social exclusion have persisted, hindering the progress of Ndi Igbo in national affairs.”

The group pointed out that new historical evidence, as revealed in the book “Journey to Service by IBB,” confirms that the coup was not driven by ethnic interests but was a military intervention involving officers from multiple regions.

Despite this revelation, the misrepresentation of the 1966 coup remains widespread, contributing to the continued discrimination against the Igbo in politics, governance, and security appointments.

In the spirit of justice, reconciliation, and national unity, the South East Youths Stakeholders Forum is making the following demands;

“Formal national apology from the Nigerian Army and the Federal Government for falsely accusing the Igbo of orchestrating the 1966 coup for tribal domination.”

“Recognition and justice for the innocent Ndi Igbo killed in the pogroms of 1966 and beyond, including proper acknowledgment of their sacrifices. ”

“An end to the continued marginalization of Ndi Igbo in national leadership, security agencies, and economic opportunities to promote national cohesion.”

The stereotyping of Ndi Igbo as “coup plotters” has long been used as a tool of division, undermining Nigeria’s unity.

The forum insists that for the nation to move forward, historical truths must be acknowledged, and corrective measures be implemented.

“We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian Army, and all relevant authorities to take urgent steps toward healing this historical injustice. The South East Youths Stakeholders Forum remains committed to the pursuit of truth, justice, and the full integration of Ndi Igbo into the Nigerian project. Only through acknowledgment and restitution can Nigeria achieve genuine unity and progress.”

2027: Our Presidential Ticket Remains Open For Contest – Labour Party Insists

Barr. Julius Abure, LP National Chairman,

The Labour Party (LP) has refuted claims that it has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to any particular region, contradicting earlier remarks by its National Chairman, Julius Abure, which suggested the South-East might retain the party’s backing.

Abure, while addressing party members at a South-East LP rally in Abuja, had reiterated the party’s previous commitment to supporting the region’s political aspirations. Reflecting on the 2023 election, he stated:

“I have no regrets that, in spite of all odds, we zoned the presidential ticket of our party to the South-East. We decided that we were going to clean the tears of the Igbo, and we powerfully and courageously did that in the 2023 general election.”

He also urged the Igbo to strengthen political alliances with other regions, pointing to the Yoruba bloc’s strategic realignments as an example of how to enhance electoral success in 2027.

However, in a subsequent statement, the party sought to clarify its position, insisting that no zoning arrangement had been made for the upcoming election.

The National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, emphasized that LP’s presidential candidate would emerge through a democratic and transparent process.

“The Labour Party has not and will not zone any of its positions to any geographical zone or individual,” the statement read.

It also acknowledged the significant role played by the South-East in the 2023 election but stressed that this did not automatically translate into a repeat endorsement in 2027.

This clarification has fueled speculation that the LP is adjusting its political strategy to maintain a broader national appeal, particularly in the North and South-West, where it seeks to expand its influence.

Analysts interpret the move as a tactical decision aimed at strengthening the party’s chances in the next general election.

Former LP National Treasurer Oluchi Oparah weighed in on the matter, critiquing Abure’s initial remarks for promoting an ethnic-based approach to the presidency.

Oparah argued that leadership should be determined by merit and competence rather than ethnic considerations.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), Adolphus Wabara, has found himself at the center of controversy within his party following his public commendation of Abia State Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party (LP).

Wabara, a former Senate President, has been accused of anti-party activities by the PDP’s Abia State Working Committee (SWC), which recently suspended him, citing his alleged endorsement of a second term for Governor Otti.

However, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) swiftly overruled the suspension, triggering a standoff between the state and national leadership.

Speaking at an 80th birthday celebration in Umuahia for PDP elder Dr. Emelike Okoro, Wabara reiterated his support for Otti, saying:

“Politics ends after campaigns and elections; governance should take centre stage. Even a blind man can see what is happening in Abia! I will continue to appreciate Governor Otti for the good works he is doing. Let them suspend me, expel me—I am first a citizen of Abia before being a PDP member.”

He also criticized the party leadership for targeting him, suggesting that their actions could extend to others.

“I have not mentioned the Labour Party; I have always mentioned Governor Alex Otti. We are all with you,” he declared.

Wabara further acknowledged that despite initial resistance from some within the PDP, Otti has been steering Abia State in a positive direction.

The celebrant, Okoro, also praised Otti’s leadership, describing it as a “breath of fresh air” for the state.

Five Killed In Osun, Others Injured As APC Takes Over LG Secretariats

Osun State was thrown into chaos on Monday as violent clashes erupted over the control of local government secretariats, leaving at least five people feared dead and several others injured.

The crisis stemmed from last week’s Court of Appeal ruling in Akure, which purportedly reinstated sacked chairmen and councillors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2022.

While the APC has insisted that the judgment reinstated its officials, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) argues that the decision does not return them to office.

The dispute escalated when APC members attempted to reclaim some council secretariats, leading to violent confrontations with PDP supporters and suspected hoodlums.

In Irewole Local Government Area, Ikire, tensions peaked as the former chairman, Mr. Remi Abass, was allegedly killed during a clash.

Credible sources told DAILY GAZETTE that Abass and his supporters were met with resistance from armed men when they tried to enforce the court ruling.

“The former chairman was allegedly killed while many others were critically injured during a gun duel between his supporters and some hoodlums who prevented the forceful takeover of the secretariat,” the source revealed.

The violence was not limited to Ikire.

In Iragbiji, Boripe Local Government Area, two people were reportedly killed when APC and PDP supporters clashed. Another person was allegedly killed in Olaoluwa Local Government Area.

Osun State Commissioner for Protocol and Government Affairs, Mr. Soji Ajeigbe, accused APC-aligned thugs of being responsible for some of the casualties.

“Apart from those killed, six others were injured while they were attempting to take over the secretariat. We have deposited the bodies in the morgue while the injured are receiving treatment at the hospital,” Ajeigbe stated.

In response to the escalating violence, the Osun State Police Command said officers had been deployed to the affected areas.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Yemisi Opalola assured that authorities were working to restore order.

Meanwhile, reports indicated that similar confrontations occurred in other local government areas, including Osogbo, Olorunda, Ilesa East, Boripe, and Ayedaade, as APC members sought to reclaim secretariats.

At the Irewole Local Government secretariat in Ikire, security presence was heavy, with about 30 armed policemen and five patrol vans stationed at the premises. A vandalized black Toyota Camry was also seen at the main gate.

In Ayedaade Local Government, a group of youths gathered outside the council building, while operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were observed monitoring the situation.

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, condemned the violence and confirmed the deaths of five PDP members during the clashes.

He urged all residents, including politicians, to stay away from local government secretariats to prevent further bloodshed.

“I, therefore, direct all law-abiding Osun residents to stay away from the council secretariats, especially as they are expected to be under lock and key.

“I equally condole families of the victims of the APC illegal takeover bid and chaos unleashed across the state by the APC and their hired thugs. PDP lost five members, with several others wounded. Two of those members are from Iragbiji, Boripe Local Government. Another two were killed at Ola Oluwa Local Government. Another one was lost at Ikire. We must stop the bloodshed,” the governor said in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.

Adeleke assured residents of their safety and emphasized that security agencies had been instructed to take full control of all local government secretariats.

While addressing journalists in Osogbo, a chieftain of the APC, Jamiu Olawumi, refuted claims that the party was behind the crisis, insisting that their chairmen and councillors had peacefully resumed work in 15 out of 30 local government areas.

“Today, our chairmen and councillors resumed in 15 out of 30, including Ilesha, Ife North, Irewole, among others. Even Ede South, which houses the private apartments of the governor, had resumed before 9 a.m.

“Surprisingly, the PDP started mobilizing hoodlums to the secretariats to attack the chairmen who resumed offices at their various locations. The SSG also led thugs to Osogbo Local Government Area,” Olawumi claimed.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Project Implementation at the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Engineer Remi Omowaiye, has alleged that he narrowly survived an assassination attempt along the Osogbo/Ilesa road.

According to Omowaiye, the attack occurred around 2:05 p.m. in front of Ilesa West Local Government Area while he was traveling to Osogbo.

“I was returning to Osogbo from Ilesha when we ran into an ambush in front of Ilesa West Local Government. They shot at where I was sitting on the bus; the bullet shattered the side windscreen.

“My driver and police orderly sustained serious gunshot wounds. They have been taken to the hospital for treatment,” he told journalists.

Omowaiye explained that he had earlier mobilized APC members in Ilesa to seek protection from the police for the reinstated local government executives.

Osun Crisis: Davido Blasts Police Commissioner, Accuses Him Of Ignoring Rule of Law

Nigerian music star Davido has openly criticized the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abba, accusing him of failing to uphold the rule of law.

The ‘Fem’ hitmaker took to his social media platforms on Monday, launching a series of fiery attacks against the police boss.

“Mr. Commissioner, respect the rule of law!!! You are not madder or crazier than us!! Make we all kuku mad!! MEN MOUNT WALAI TO KRF!!! I will post you every day, everywhere, Mr. man!!! Try me, fucker,” Davido wrote.

In another outburst, he extended his criticism to Abba’s family, further intensifying his attacks.

“Mr. Umar Abba, Osun State Commissioner, you are a disgrace to your children!! Game on, FUCKER!!!! All of us go mad together!! W*rey!!!”

To drive home his frustration, the award-winning singer also shared a video, vowing to go toe-to-toe with the police chief.

Davido’s outrage appears to be linked to the political tensions brewing in Osun State.

His uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, had on Sunday accused former governor Adegboyega Oyetola of orchestrating a plot to destabilize the state.

Adeleke alleged that Oyetola, a nephew of President Bola Tinubu, was working behind the scenes to incite chaos in Osun, leveraging his political connections to create unrest.

The governor further claimed that Oyetola was colluding with key security officials, including the Osun State Commissioner of Police, the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Calling on President Tinubu to intervene, Adeleke warned that if peace in Osun is disrupted, Oyetola should be held accountable.

Court Affirms Arrest Warrant Against Mercy Chinwo’s Ex-Manager

A Federal High Court in Lagos has reaffirmed that the arrest warrant issued against Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, the former manager of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, remains in effect.

Justice Alexander Owoeye made this pronouncement during proceedings on Monday.

Chinwo had accused Onyedikachukwu of diverting $345,000 in royalties due to her, leading the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to file a three-count charge against him for money laundering and fraudulent diversion of funds.

At a prior hearing, EFCC counsel Bilikisu Buhari-Bala informed the court that the prosecution had been unable to serve the charge on the defendant as he had made himself unreachable.

Consequently, the court granted the EFCC’s request for an arrest warrant.

At the last sitting on January 24, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Monday Ubani appeared for Onyedikachukwu and sought to have the arrest warrant revoked.

However, the EFCC reminded the court that the defendant was evading service, which justified the warrant.

Following a request by the EFCC, Justice Owoeye permitted the prosecution to serve the charge on Onyedikachukwu through his lawyer, Ubani.

The court then scheduled the defendant’s arraignment.

When the case resumed on Monday, Ubani again appeared for Onyedikachukwu, while Senior Advocate of Nigeria Rotimi Oyedepo represented the EFCC.

Ubani acknowledged that the hearing was meant for his client’s arraignment but stated that the defence had filed a preliminary objection challenging the charges.

At this point, the judge asked, Where is the defendant?”

Ubani responded that Onyedikachukwu had called him earlier, claiming he had been involved in a serious accident that morning. He assured the court that his client would be present at the next hearing.

When Ubani attempted to argue his objection, the judge refused, stating that the court had not assumed jurisdiction since the defendant had not yet entered a plea.

Prosecutor Oyedepo criticized the defence’s approach, citing Section 396(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and other legal precedents.

My lord, it is a show of shame and outright disrespect of this court for the defendant to be absent on three different occasions in a criminal trial,” Oyedepo said.

He further informed the judge that, despite claiming he was unavailable, Onyedikachukwu had been seen on the court premises after the last hearing, giving media interviews.

It is a shame and complete dishonour to the court for a defendant to exhibit such an attitude,” Oyedepo added.

He argued that if Onyedikachukwu was truly unwell, an affidavit should have been filed to support the claim.

In light of this, Oyedepo requested the court to issue a fresh bench warrant to compel the defendant’s attendance and uphold the court’s authority.

Ubani objected, promising to personally ensure Onyedikachukwu’s appearance at the next hearing.

In a brief ruling, Justice Owoeye noted that the initial bench warrant was still valid as it had not been withdrawn.

The court ordered Onyedikachukwu to appear for arraignment at the next sitting, which was scheduled for March 6 based on the agreement of both parties.

We Alerted DSS To Security Threat, Didn’t Seal Speaker’s Office – Lagos Assembly Clerk

The Lagos State House of Assembly has reiterated its decision to remove Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, clarifying that the Department of State Services (DSS) was invited to provide security, contrary to reports that its operatives forcefully took over the Assembly complex.

Fresh details emerged on Monday indicating that the Acting Clerk of the Assembly had formally notified the State Security Service (SSS) about the likelihood of unrest and requested enhanced security measures to maintain order within the legislative premises.

This development was outlined in a letter dated February 14, 2025, which was made available to newsmen.

The letter revealed that the Assembly management had credible intelligence suggesting attempts to forcibly reinstate the impeached Speaker, Hon. Obasa, on February 18, 2025.

According to the letter, such an action posed “a potential security threat” to the Assembly and its members.

Signed by the Acting Clerk, Mr. A. T. B. Ottun, the letter—bearing reference number LSHA/FAD/0/7554/323—was addressed to the DSS Director in Lagos State, alongside the heads of other security agencies.

In the letter, titled URGENT: ENHANCED SECURITY MEASURES FOR LSHA PREMISES,” Ottun wrote:

“I wish to bring to your attention a pressing matter that requires immediate action.”

He further highlighted that the impeached Speaker, Hon. Obasa, was planning to return to office on February 18, 2025, as Speaker, which could escalate tensions within the Assembly.

“In light of this situation, we kindly request that you take necessary measures to fortify the security of the Assembly premises with effect from Sunday, February 16, 2025, by increasing the presence of your men and also observing strict access control within and outside the Assembly premises until further notice,” the Clerk stated.

He concluded by urging swift action from the security agencies, adding:

“We look forward to your prompt attention, Sir. Thank you.”

Ned Nwoko Dismisses Marriage, Pregnancy Rumours Involving Actress Chika Ike

Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North senatorial district at the National Assembly, has denied rumours suggesting that he is planning to marry Nollywood actress Chika Ike as his seventh wife or that she is expecting his child.

The speculation, which has gained traction online, also linked the alleged marriage to his current wife, Regina Daniels, who recently deactivated her Instagram account.

Reports claim Daniels deleted her account after news surfaced that Nwoko had fathered a child with Ike, who had shared photos of her baby bump on social media.

In response, Nwoko’s communications office released a statement on Monday dismissing the claims as false.

“These baseless claims are a product of malicious speculation,” the statement read.

Additionally, the senator refuted reports that linked him to comments about singer Tuface Idibia and polygamy. He described such claims as completely untrue.

A viral report had alleged that Nwoko praised Tuface for embracing polygamy, supposedly calling it a way to maintain balance and avoid infidelity.

The report falsely attributed the following statement to him:

“2face is a real representation of the African man. Wealth is defined by how many wives and children you have. Yes, they are at the forefront of your success as a man. Do you also see how he proposed to Natasha, without kneeling down?”

Clarifying the matter, the senator’s office stated:

“As a public figure, and with his wife also being an actress, it is not unusual for bloggers seeking attention to fabricate such stories.”

The statement further emphasized that Nwoko remains focused on his political responsibilities, dismissing the rumours as distractions.

“However, Senator Nwoko is currently on a national assignment, focused on delivering on his political mandate, and has no time for distractions. This office remains available to journalists for verification of information, and we remind media practitioners of the consequences of spreading fake news. The public is advised to disregard these rumours and rely only on official statements from his office.”

The statement urged the public to be cautious of misleading reports and trust only verified sources for information.
