Kidnappers Of APC National Director Demand N350m Ransom

The kidnappers of Dr. Adekunle Raif Adeniji, the Director of Administration at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretariat in Abuja, have demanded a ransom of N350 million for his release.

According to reports, his family has been contacted by the abductors, who insist that the ransom must be paid before he is freed.

A family member, speaking to our reporter, confirmed that Dr. Adeniji and others taken alongside him remain in captivity.

“The director and others are still in captivity, and the abductors said he will not be released until the money is paid.”

A source within the APC also corroborated the development, telling Daily Trust that efforts are being made to secure his release.

Dr. Adeniji was abducted two weeks ago by armed men wielding AK-47 rifles in the Chikakore area of Kubwa, within the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He was taken along with three others, including his brother, his brother’s wife, and their son.

Reports indicate that he had visited his brother’s residence when the gunmen stormed the area.

Tragically, the brother’s wife, Madam Esther, was killed, and her body was discovered the next morning in Ijah-Gbagyi, Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State.

Chikakore, a community on the outskirts of Kubwa, is located approximately 30 kilometers from central Abuja.

Dr. Adeniji assumed office as Director of Administration in August 2024, following the resignation of his predecessor, Prof. Alaba Adediwura. His appointment was formally confirmed in a letter issued by the party’s National Secretary.

APC Confirms Abduction:

Senior APC officials have acknowledged the abduction but have refrained from providing extensive details on the matter.

A source at the party’s national secretariat stated:

“Yes, it’s true. But it’s not something that we want to discuss.”

Regarding the ransom demand, another party official commented:

“Well, efforts are being made to secure his release, and we don’t want to blow it.”

Another senior official at the party’s secretariat in Abuja also confirmed the incident, stating:

“It’s true. This one I am telling you is a confidential confirmation. But we are seeing to his release soon.”

However, there has been no official statement from the National Working Committee (NWC) or security personnel attached to the party’s secretariat regarding the incident.

Efforts to get a response from the police were unsuccessful, as the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, did not answer calls or respond to messages seeking an update.

One Week After, Abducted General Still in Captivity

In another case of abduction, retired Brigadier General Maharazu Tsiga and nine others remain in captivity one week after being taken by bandits in Tsiga town, Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Tsiga, a former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), was kidnapped last Wednesday when over 100 armed men stormed his residence at midnight.

The kidnappers have reportedly contacted his family, demanding a ransom of N250 million for his release. However, details of any negotiations remain unclear.

The Chairman of Bakori Local Government, Alhaji Aliyu Mai Chitta, confirmed that efforts are being made to rescue the hostages.

Expressing concern over the possible role of informants in the attack, he stated:

“If not for informants, how would bandits know that he was in town, let alone come to abduct him?”

He reassured that security agencies are actively working to secure their release.

Meanwhile, residents, particularly women, have been offering prayers for the safe return of General Tsiga.

A local resident noted that his generosity toward the less privileged had prompted many to seek divine intervention for his freedom.

Idahosa Urges INEC To Conduct All Elections On Same Day To Reduce Costs

Bishop Isaac Idahosa, the 2023 Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct presidential, senatorial, and gubernatorial elections on the same day.

He believes this approach will cut costs and improve election outcomes.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Idahosa advocated for a more streamlined electoral process, stating:

“I would like to suggest that all elections be conducted on the same day. That will help curb a lot of issues—presidential, senatorial, gubernatorial, all on the same day. It will cut costs and produce the desired results. But when elections are spread over one or two weeks after the presidential poll, a lot can happen—a bandwagon effect can take place.”

Beyond cost-saving measures, Idahosa emphasized the need for accountability within INEC and among public officials responsible for electoral failures.

“We don’t punish anyone for wrongdoing; there are no consequences, so they keep repeating the same actions,” he said.

“INEC makes mistakes, yet no one holds them accountable, and then the same mistakes happen again. Once there are no consequences for actions or inactions, the cycle continues because there is no accountability.”

As part of the 2023 general elections, INEC introduced the Result Viewing Portal (IReV) and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

However, many politicians raised concerns about their effectiveness, while INEC attributed some of their shortcomings to technical glitches.

Idahosa, a close ally of former Kano governor and 2023 NNPP presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, was part of the election in which his party finished fourth with 1,496,687 votes.

The final results saw Bola Tinubu of the APC win with 8,794,726 votes, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP secure 6,984,520 votes, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party garner 6,101,533 votes.

Despite challenges in court, the Supreme Court ruled that the inability to upload results on IReV was not sufficient to annul the election.

Idahosa also decried the growing influence of money in Nigerian politics, stating:

“Some individuals in government have become more powerful than institutions, negatively affecting governance in the country. Money politics has taken over the system.”

Reps Summon Customs Boss Over Senior Officers’ Refusal To Retire

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, to appear before it on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

The summons follows allegations that some senior officials of the service have refused to retire despite reaching their due retirement dates.

The petition, submitted by the Obasi-Pherson Help Foundation, claims that several Assistant Comptrollers and Comptrollers were due for retirement but had deliberately remained in service.

A statement released on Wednesday by Chooks Oko, Head of Media for the House Committee on Public Petitions, named the officers in question as Imam, Umar, and Egwu (Assistant Comptrollers), and Awe, Fatia, and Faith (Comptrollers).

Issuing the summons, the Committee emphasized the need for accountability, stating:

“Nigerians deserve to know the truth of the matter, and only the CG can clarify the situation. We are elected to serve the people and ensure that all government agencies function effectively as part of that service.”

Chairman of the Committee, Mike Etaba, further stressed:

“In this era, when most of our youths are seeking employment, it is unfair for those due for retirement to refuse to leave. That is not to say we shall take sides—far from it. We treat each case on merit, ensuring that justice is served at all times to those who deserve it.”

In a related matter, the Committee has warned that it will order the arrest of the Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, if she fails to appear in person to respond to allegations regarding an unpaid software development project.

The allegations were made by Truid Limited, a private firm, which claimed that NIMC had breached a licence agreement for a tokenisation system that was developed, deployed, and funded entirely by the company, without any financial obligation on NIMC’s part.

According to Opara, counsel to Truid Limited, the agreement allowed the company to recover its investment through patronage by service providers, with proceeds shared based on an agreed ratio.

The arrangement was intended to last for ten years, starting in 2021, when the software was first deployed.

However, the petition alleges that issues arose following the appointment of the new NIMC Director General, who is now reportedly attempting to terminate the agreement unilaterally.

Reacting to arguments presented by the legal representatives of both parties, Etaba criticized the repeated absence of the NIMC DG at previous hearings.

“If she fails to appear at the next hearing, we will have no option but to direct the Inspector General of Police to compel her attendance. How can a government official treat a constituted authority with such levity? We will no longer condone such behaviour,” he warned.

BREAKING: NLC Orders Boycott Of MTN, Airtel, Glo Over Tariff Hikes

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has directed workers and other concerned Nigerians to boycott telecommunications services from MTN, Airtel, and Glo starting at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 13, 2025, in response to recent tariff hikes.

The directive was issued in a statement by NLC President Joe Ajaero and Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja on Wednesday.

“The CWC demands an immediate reversal of the tariff hike, which took effect today, and insists that the companies revert to the previous tariff until the committee completes its deliberations and reaches a conclusive agreement,” the statement read.

As part of the resistance against the tariff increase, the NLC declared: “As a first step in resisting this arbitrary tariff hike, the CWC has directed that beginning Thursday, February 13, 2025, Nigerian workers and other willing citizens shall boycott the services of MTN, AIRTEL, and GLO daily between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM until the end of February 2025.”

The Congress also condemned the government’s inaction in safeguarding citizens from corporate exploitation, emphasizing its role in ensuring fair economic policies.

Additionally, the NLC reviewed the Tax Reform Bills and warned against policies that could impose further hardship on Nigerian workers. While acknowledging the importance of fiscal reforms, the Congress pledged to advocate for “fair and worker-friendly tax policies.”

If telecom providers fail to reverse the tariff hike by February 29, 2025, the NLC announced its plan to escalate action: “If the tariff hike is not reversed by February 29, 2025, the NLC will commence a nationwide telecom shutdown from March 1, 2025.”

The Congress called on civil society organizations and all Nigerians to join in resisting “exploitative economic policies” and ensure that the interests of the people are protected.

Just In: Over 1,000 PDP Groups Back Senator Anyanwu As National Secretary, Warn Against Power Mongers’ Influence

Over 1,000 groups within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have declared their support for Senator Samuel Anyanwu, affirming his position as the party’s National Secretary amid an ongoing leadership crisis.

The PDP Youth Frontiers Network, a coalition of progressive-minded youth groups within the party, made this known at a press briefing in Abuja, where they addressed what they described as an unconstitutional attempt to replace Anyanwu with Deputy National Secretary, Sunday Udeh-Okoye.

Speaking at the event, National Coordinator Hon. Henry Owolabi condemned the interference of the PDP Governors’ Forum and the Board of Trustees (BoT), accusing them of overstepping their bounds by advising the National Working Committee (NWC) to swear in Udeh-Okoye.

Owolabi argued that such a move contradicts the PDP Constitution and disregards the fact that Senator Anyanwu was duly elected at a national convention.

He further noted that Anyanwu has already appealed the judgment at the Supreme Court, meaning the status quo should be maintained until a final decision is reached.

The group also issued a strong warning against what they described as the influence of desperate power mongers, asserting that the actions of the Governors’ Forum and the BoT are “illegal, deliberately mischievous, and uncomplimentary to the party.

Threatening to take action if their warning is ignored, the groups vowed to mobilize their members and supporters to block judicial premises and take civil actions if necessary.

Owolabi emphasized the need for unity within the PDP, stating:

We consider it an imperative and dire need of the hour that, as a Party, we must begin by building consensus and form once more a united, formidable, and strong Party, striving to preserve the PDP as a veritable platform for good governance in Nigeria and not continue in the path of self-interest, self-distraught, myopic divisiveness, and pristine bickering which has not helped us but has become viable and fertile ground for the opposition to hatch inroads and poach into us, destroying our very fabrics.”

Reiterating their firm stance, Owolabi declared:

“We, therefore, join our voices and affirm unequivocal, unflinching, and unwavering support and loyalty of our organization and that of all party supporters to the ideals of the party and by extension to the office of the National Secretary.

“That Senator Anyanwu remains the National Secretary and the attempt to remove him and replace him with a judiciary-imposed secretary, without any Congress or legitimate procedural ratification of any organ of the party, is hereby totally rejected.

“We warn all detractors and perpetrators and indeed the Judiciary to steer clear of the internal workings of our great party and henceforth refrain from issuing illegal, baseless, porous judgments that lack legal foundation and are immoral.

“We are poised to mobilize all our members and teeming supporters to block all judicial premises and ensure civil actions that will lead to compliance with this warning if it is flaunted.”

Wabara Remains Suspended – Abia PDP Rejects National Publicity Secretary’s Statement

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly opposed the statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, which dismissed the suspension of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Adolphus Wabara.

According to the Abia PDP, its decision to suspend Wabara is rooted in the party’s constitution and cannot be overturned by a mere statement from the publicity secretary.

The party also warned that it would pursue legal action if any attempt is made to undermine the decision of the State Executive Committee (SEC) through unconstitutional means.

Reacting to Ologunagba’s statement, Abia State PDP chairman, Elder Abraham Amah, clarified that the publicity secretary was expressing a personal opinion, as his remarks were not backed by any official resolution from the National Working Committee (NWC).

He emphasized that the PDP constitution allows disciplinary action against any member, regardless of their position, if they violate party rules.

We categorically state that the decision of the Abia State Executive Committee (SEC) to suspend Senator Adolphus Wabara met every constitutional requirement of the party and cannot be invalidated by a mere statement from the National Publicity Secretary, which is not a by-product of any official resolution of the National Working Committee (NWC),” Amah stated.

Providing constitutional backing for the decision, Amah cited several sections of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017):

  • “Section 58(1)(b) & (h)—This section provides that a member of the Party may be sanctioned for engaging in anti-party activities or any conduct likely to bring the Party into disrepute. The endorsement of a sitting governor from another political party, as done by Senator Wabara, clearly constitutes a violation of this provision.
  • “Section 59(3) explicitly states that the Board of Trustees is not immune from disciplinary actions where necessary. As such, the decision to sanction Senator Wabara is well within the powers of the Abia State PDP.
  • “Section 59(4) affirms that the Party can take disciplinary actions against any member whose conduct contravenes the principles of the PDP, further reinforcing the legality of the SEC’s decision.
  • “Section 57(6)—While the National Publicity Secretary referenced Section 57(7), he conveniently ignored Section 57(6), which provides that the power to take disciplinary action against any member is vested in the relevant executive committees at all levels of the Party, subject to due process. The Abia PDP has acted within this legal framework.”

Amah further stressed that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP or a competent court of law has the authority to overturn the decision of the State Executive Committee.

Until such a competent authority pronounces otherwise, the suspension of Senator Wabara remains in full effect.”

He also urged the National Publicity Secretary to exercise caution in his statements to avoid misleading the public and undermining the party’s integrity.

“We urge the National Publicity Secretary to exercise restraint and avoid issuing statements that lack a constitutional basis, mislead the public, and ridicule the party. The PDP, as a party, must uphold discipline and accountability at all levels, and no individual, regardless of position, is above the constitution of the party.

“As a State Chapter, we shall not hesitate to seek appropriate judicial redress should any attempt be made to subvert the decision of the Abia PDP SEC through unconstitutional means.”

2Baba Makes U-turn, Deletes Social Media Post Declaring Love For Edo Lawmaker

Renowned music star Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has stirred controversy after deleting a social media post in which he publicly expressed love for Natasha Irobosa Osawaru, the Deputy Majority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly.

On Wednesday, February 11, 2025, the singer posted a video on Instagram, professing his admiration for the lawmaker and revealing his intention to marry her.

However, the post was quickly removed after it gained widespread attention.

Yes, I love her. She’s amazing, she’s cool. I want to marry her,” he stated in the video.

Addressing concerns about his relationship with his ex-wife, Annie Macaulay Idibia, 2Baba reassured fans that there was no hostility between them.

On the other side, Annie and I are not fighting, we are not quarrelling. We have a good understanding of ourselves and what’s going on,” he said.

In an effort to dispel rumors that Natasha was responsible for his marital issues, he strongly defended her.

Honourable Natasha has seen. She has been called all sorts of names. She is a young, brilliant, amazing woman. She had nothing to do with what’s happening between Annie and me in our marriage. She has absolutely nothing to do with that, but I see everybody allegedly trying to rope her into everything,” he asserted.

Despite the singer’s clarifications, many online observers suspect that the drama surrounding his love life and recent divorce may be a publicity stunt.

Meanwhile, Natasha has publicly denied any romantic involvement with 2Baba, dismissing the speculations surrounding their alleged affair.

Edo Gov’ship Tribunal: APC Witness Contradicts Self, Admits Over-Voting, INEC Irregularities

The credibility of the Edo State governorship election was called into question on Wednesday at the Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja when a key witness for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Afuda Theophilus, acknowledged that over-voting took place in Esan North East Local Government Area.

This admission directly contradicted his earlier sworn statement that no such irregularities occurred.

During cross-examination, Theophilus initially maintained that there were no cases of over-voting, but when presented with official polling unit results, he was compelled to accept that the total number of votes cast exceeded the number of accredited voters.

This shows there was over-voting?” asked Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN), lead counsel for Asue Ighodalo.

Yes,” Theophilus admitted before attempting to provide an explanation.

Further scrutiny of electoral documents revealed additional lapses.

When questioned about Form EC25B, the document required by INEC for recording the serial numbers of sensitive election materials before voting, Theophilus confirmed its importance.

Owonikoko referred to the INEC Manual for Election Officials, emphasizing that Form EC25B was meant to document serial numbers for result sheets and ballot papers. The witness agreed.

However, when shown the actual Form EC25Bs from the election, he acknowledged that they were incomplete, lacking serial numbers, signatures, and other identifying details.

There is no entry of serial numbers of result sheets or the BVAS machine. Can you confirm?” Owonikoko pressed.

I can’t find it…” Theophilus hesitated before conceding.

When further questioned about the missing serial numbers, he finally admitted, Yes, they are not there.”

Following these revelations, opposition representative Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor argued that the testimony highlighted critical irregularities in INEC’s management of the election, further undermining the credibility of the results.

Our legal team has argued that failure to complete Form EC25B alone constitutes non-compliance with electoral guidelines, invalidating results from affected polling units. This is the law—it is not my opinion. It is a strict liability issue, and once again, we are grateful to the APC for sending us such honest witnesses,” he stated.

With its own witness inadvertently reinforcing the opposition’s claims, the APC’s defense appears increasingly vulnerable.

Paul Biya Turns 92 After Over 40 Years In Power

Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya, the world’s oldest head of state, celebrates his 92nd birthday on Thursday, having led the country for more than 40 years.

However, he remains silent on whether he will seek another term in this year’s election.

Despite speculation, many – including the fractured opposition—believe that the leader, who first took office in 1982, will run for an eighth term in the October vote.

Following the highly contested 2018 election, Biya further tightened his grip on power, with dissent met with repression, arrests, and prison terms, according to human rights activists.

“The president has already said that he will make known whether or not he is a candidate in this election at the appropriate time,” government spokesman and Communication Minister Rene Emmanuel Sadi stated last month.

Biya has not designated a successor, and discussing who might replace him remains a taboo subject.

“In the current context, even if he were lying on a stretcher, candidate Biya will be re-elected,” former minister Garga Haman Adji said in an interview with Mutations in July.

Concerns over Biya’s health intensified last year when he vanished from public view for several weeks.

Persistent rumors led authorities to clarify that he was in Switzerland, where he frequently stays at luxury resorts.

Subsequently, the government formally prohibited local media from discussing his health status.

Since returning to Cameroon on October 21, Biya has made only a handful of public appearances, including official photos from the presidential palace, a regional summit in Yaoundé, and televised speeches.

As in past election years, various voices have urged him to seek another term.

“My determination to serve you remains intact and is strengthened on a daily basis, given the scale of the challenges we face,” Biya stated in his end-of-year address, citing “massive support.”

In January, traditional leaders pledged their “total and unwavering” backing. Some of his supporters on Facebook insist Biya remains “still strong” and could serve two more terms.

International human rights organizations frequently accuse Biya’s administration of repressing opposition.

His seventh-term victory in 2018 was marked by widespread allegations of fraud, sparking political crackdowns.

“In recent times, the anxieties of the vast majority of Cameroonians have increasingly transformed into cries of distress in the face of the misery they are experiencing and the degradation of our beautiful country,” Catholic bishops said in a recent conference.

They also condemned “corruption,” unemployment, and widespread violence affecting parts of the country.

Since 2009, Cameroon’s far north has faced attacks from Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Meanwhile, since 2016, a deadly conflict has raged in the country’s two English-speaking regions between armed separatist groups and government forces.

In his last speech, Biya praised “the tremendous progress seen in recent years.”

Speaking in a hoarse voice, he referenced “the next electoral deadline” and urged young people “not to listen to the sirens of chaos that some irresponsible people are sounding.”

Since January 2019, the government has not undergone a reshuffle, and four ministerial positions remain vacant following the deaths of their occupants.

Additionally, over a dozen lawmakers and five senators who have passed away have yet to be replaced.
