2025 UTME: Govt’s Anti-Cheating Measures Effective, Says Education Minister Amid Mass Failure

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has described the high failure rate in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as proof that the government’s clampdown on examination malpractice is working, especially within the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

His comments follow public concern after JAMB released statistics revealing that out of 1,955,069 candidates, only around 420,000 scored above 200, indicating that over 78 percent did not meet the 200-mark benchmark.

Appearing on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, Alausa said the results demonstrate that tighter security protocols have made cheating much harder, particularly through JAMB’s computer-based testing system.

“That’s a big concern, and it’s a reflection of exams being done the proper way,” Alausa explained.

“JAMB conducts its exam using a computer-based testing system.”

“They’ve implemented strong security measures, and as a result, fraud or cheating has been completely eliminated. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same for WAEC and NECO.”

The minister revealed that the education ministry undertook a thorough review of Nigeria’s examination systems shortly after he assumed office.

As part of ongoing reforms, Alausa announced that both the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) would begin implementing computer-based testing for objective sections starting in November 2025.

He added that a complete transition to the CBT model — covering both objective and essay questions — would take effect during the May/June 2026 exam cycle.

“We have to use technology to fight this fraud,” he said.

“There are so many ‘miracle centres’, and that is simply unacceptable. People cheat during WAEC and NECO exams and then face JAMB, where cheating is nearly impossible. That’s the disparity we’re seeing now. It’s sad,” Alausa added.

He further emphasized the harmful effect of exam malpractice on sincere students, warning that it erodes trust in the education system.

“The worst part of cheating is that it disincentivises the hard-working ones,” he said.

“If I’m preparing for WAEC or NECO and I know some classmates already have access to the questions, do you think I’ll still study hard? No, I’ll be tempted to join them. That’s how good students are corrupted, and that’s exactly what we must stop.”

Alausa reaffirmed the government’s resolve to reform the system using technology to ensure fairness and integrity in both exams and university admissions.

Tinubu Submits N1.78 Trillion FCT 2025 Budget To House of Reps

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally submitted the 2025 budget proposal for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the House of Representatives for consideration and approval.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and read during Tuesday’s plenary session, the President cited constitutional backing for the presentation.

The letter reads:
“Pursuant to Section 299 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, which vests legislative powers over the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja in the National Assembly, I hereby present the 2025 FCT budget proposal to the House of Representatives for consideration.”

President Tinubu emphasized key focus areas of the proposal:
“The 2025 FCT budget proposal prioritizes investment in healthcare services, job creation, youth empowerment, social welfare services, education infrastructure, as well as increase in productivity in agriculture.”

He added that the overarching aim of the budget is to improve citizens’ quality of life:
“Our objective is to lift as many of our citizens out of poverty as we can.”

The President noted the fiscal outlook for the FCT in 2025 and the proposed expenditure framework:
“The House of Representatives is invited to know that, on the basis of revenue forecast for the FCT, a total expenditure of N1,783,823,708,392 is proposed for the year 2025.”

He explained the allocation structure of capital spending:
“As such, 85% of capital expenditure is dedicated to the completion of ongoing projects while 15% is for new capital projects, so as to sustain ongoing efforts at providing basic infrastructure and social amenities in the FCT.”

Concluding the letter, President Tinubu expressed confidence in the House’s swift consideration:
“I hereby forward the 2025 FCT statutory proposals and trust that it would receive expeditious consideration and passage by the House of Representatives.”

2027: Presidency In Panic Mood Over Looming Coalition – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that the Presidency is gripped by fear over efforts to form a broad political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku’s remarks come in response to comments made by Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, who urged the former vice president to drop his presidential ambitions.

Bwala argued that Atiku lacked a divine mandate and had lost significant political support.

“If I could meet him face to face, I’d say: believe in destiny. It may not be God’s will for you to govern Nigeria,” Bwala said during a television interview.

He also claimed that Atiku had already lost “60 to 70 per cent” of his political allies.

Reacting swiftly, Atiku’s media office described Bwala’s statements as “disparaging,” accusing him of being hypocritical and opportunistic.

“It is ironic that Bwala, a political turncoat who once served as Atiku’s spokesperson, now lectures a statesman on legacy and destiny,” the office stated.

The statement further alleged that Bwala’s comments reveal growing concern within President Tinubu’s camp over the emerging coalition being led by Atiku and other progressive leaders.

“The office said Bwala’s remarks reflect desperation within the Tinubu camp, which it claimed is ‘rattled by the unstoppable momentum’ of the opposition coalition being championed by Atiku and other progressive leaders.”

It also questioned the Tinubu administration’s focus on attacking the former vice president:
“If Atiku is a spent force, why the smear campaign? Why dedicate presidential platforms to attack him?” the statement asked.

According to the media team, Atiku remains Nigeria’s most formidable opposition leader, committed to “rescuing the country from economic collapse and democratic erosion,” and will not be swayed by “political jesters masquerading as patriots.”

NASS Moves To Resolve Rivers Crisis, Constitutes Reconciliation Panel

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has announced that the National Assembly will soon establish a high-powered reconciliation committee aimed at resolving the escalating political crisis in Rivers State.

The prolonged feud between the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his former political ally, current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, recently led to violent attacks on oil installations.

This prompted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the state and suspend both the governor and members of the State Assembly aligned with Wike.

During plenary on Tuesday, marking the resumption of legislative activities after the Easter and Sallah recess, Speaker Abbas disclosed that the planned committee, being formed in partnership with the Senate, would include respected national figures to drive peaceful dialogue and support the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers and other conflict-ridden states.

“In the coming weeks, we shall work with the Senate to constitute a high-level Committee on Reconciliation, comprising respected national figures, to facilitate dialogue, promote peace, and support the restoration of democratic order in Rivers State and other conflict-affected regions,” Abbas told lawmakers.

This development follows the House’s earlier endorsement of President Tinubu’s emergency declaration in Rivers, alongside the inauguration of a 21-member ad hoc committee led by House Leader, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere to oversee the interim administration.

That committee has already begun engaging key stakeholders.

Reiterating the House’s commitment to national stability, Abbas said the reconciliation initiative was designed to address the complex political issues destabilizing the state.

Meanwhile, the Senate also took decisive action on Tuesday by constituting an 18-member committee to monitor the activities of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), who was appointed by President Tinubu as the sole administrator of Rivers State following the emergency declaration.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while announcing the committee during plenary, emphasized the importance of ensuring transparency and accountability during the interim period.

He also hinted that the committee’s membership could be reviewed following further consultations.

President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency via a national broadcast, citing political instability and a breakdown of law and order in Rivers.

The proclamation resulted in the suspension of Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the State Assembly for six months.

Ibas was appointed to oversee the state’s administration with immediate effect.

While the move is aimed at stabilizing the region, it has attracted widespread criticism, especially following Ibas’s appointment of sole administrators for local government councils, a decision many view as unconstitutional and undemocratic.

The Senate’s oversight committee is tasked with ensuring that the actions of the sole administrator remain within constitutional bounds and do not undermine democratic institutions.

Akpabio urged the committee to begin its work immediately, stressing the urgency of preserving democratic accountability.

“The Senate remains committed to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that governance, even in a caretaker capacity, adheres to the rule of law,” he said.

The committee is chaired by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele. Other members include Adamu Aliero (Kebbi), Osita Izunaso (Imo), Osita Ngwu (Enugu), Kaka Shehu (Borno), Aminu Abass (Adamawa), Tokunbo Abiru (Lagos), and Adeniyi Adegbonmire (Ondo).

Additional members are Sani Musa (Niger), Simon Lalong (Plateau), Asuquo Ekpeyong (Cross River), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Ireti Kingibe (FCT), Onyekachi Nwebonyi (Ebonyi), Idiat Adebule (Lagos), Ede Dafinone (Delta), and Mohammed Nakudu (Jigawa). The Clerk of the Senate will serve as the committee’s secretary.

Man Fined N200,000 For Spraying N400 At Wedding

Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Kano has convicted one Rabiu Suleiman for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act by spraying N400 in N100 notes during a wedding ceremony.

The incident occurred in January at the Badawa event centre. Suleiman was arraigned on a one-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on April 7. Upon arraignment, he pleaded guilty to the offence.

According to the prosecution, the act contravened the CBN Act of 2007 and is punishable under Section 21(1), which stipulates a penalty of not less than six months imprisonment, a fine of N50,000, or both.

Justice Shuaibu, in his ruling, said, “The accused is convicted as charged.”

However, he acknowledged a plea bargain entered between both parties and ruled in favour of a fine.

“Based on a plea bargain entered by the two parties, the convict is to pay a fine of N200,000,” the judge declared.

EFCC counsel, Z. Muhammad, confirmed the agreement and urged the court to impose a fine in lieu of a custodial sentence.

“The convict had sought for a plea bargain, praying the court to exercise its discretion by imposing fine instead of jail term,” he told the court.

The defence counsel, Ahmad Bua, agreed with the prosecution’s submission.

Justice Shuaibu emphasized the importance of upholding respect for the national currency, regardless of its depreciating value.

“The national currency must be respected by all at every material time,” he stressed, adding that its declining value is no justification for mutilation or public abuse.

Ndume Applauds Tinubu’s Import Ban, Says It’s A Lifeline For Local Producers

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has praised President Bola Tinubu’s recent decision to place a ban on certain foreign goods, describing it as a crucial step toward reviving Nigeria’s local industries.

In a statement released Tuesday in Abuja, the former Senate Chief Whip backed the presidential directive, which instructs all federal ministries, departments, and agencies to prioritize Nigerian-made goods, services, and expertise in their spending.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following Monday’s Federal Executive Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa.

Idris emphasized that the policy aims to ensure that “Nigeria is at the centre of every kobo” spent by the government.

Reacting to the development, Ndume said the decision would significantly benefit local entrepreneurs, enhance economic growth, and provide jobs for citizens.

He “It is heartwarming to hear that President Tinubu has taken this bold decision to ban imported goods that can be produced locally. This will be a major boost for indigenous businesses amid the slipping Nigerian economy.”

He further stressed the importance of faithful implementation, noting its potential to protect domestic producers from being overwhelmed by foreign competitors.

“If implemented faithfully, it will shield our local producers striving to find their feet from being choked out of existence by established foreign investors who flood our market, unhindered, with goods that are cheaper and even substandard,” he said.

According to the senator, supporting local industries through such policy will help curb unemployment, increase the Gross Domestic Product, and strengthen the naira by reducing pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

“With protection of local industries, there will be employment for our employable youths, the measure will also boost our Gross Domestic Product and the value of Naira will appreciate as there will be less strain on our foreign reserves, since the demand for foreign exchange by importers of such foreign goods would drastically reduce,” Ndume added.

He also urged the government to complement the ban by introducing steep tariffs on foreign items that can be made locally, discouraging their consumption.

“The Federal Government should seek to impose heavy taxes on some of the foreign goods to discourage Nigerians from buying them instead of picking locally produced items,” he concluded.

U.S Offers $1,000 Stipend, Travel Aid For Undocumented Migrants Choosing Voluntary Exit

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a new initiative offering undocumented immigrants financial and logistical support to voluntarily return to their home countries.

Through the CBP Home App, eligible individuals can now apply for travel assistance and receive a $1,000 stipend once their return is confirmed.

The DHS says the program is designed to offer a more humane, cost-effective alternative to formal deportation.

“This voluntary self-deportation pathway provides a dignified option for undocumented immigrants while reducing the burden on federal immigration resources,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

“It is safer for migrants, law enforcement, and significantly cuts costs for taxpayers, by up to 70 percent.”

According to DHS estimates, the average cost of arresting, detaining, and deporting an undocumented immigrant is $17,121.

By contrast, the new self-deportation model is projected to be far less expensive and more efficient.

The first successful use of the program was reported recently, with a Honduran national traveling from Chicago back to Honduras.

DHS confirms that additional travel bookings have been made in the days following the launch.

Participants who show serious intent to leave through the app will be deprioritized for enforcement actions, provided they make verifiable progress toward departure.

Officials also noted that cooperation with the program may improve chances of legal reentry in the future.

The program is part of a broader effort by U.S. immigration authorities to manage border enforcement through a mix of deterrence, legal options, and voluntary compliance.

Six Killed in Renewed Plateau Violence, Youth Group Alleges Fulani Militants Involved

Tragedy has struck once again in Plateau State as fresh violence claimed six lives in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

Among the dead are a woman and her six-month-old baby, according to a statement issued by the National leadership of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM).

BYM President Dalyop Mwantiri and Secretary-General Bature Adazaram confirmed the deadly incidents in a joint statement released in Jos.

They disclosed that the attacks occurred in two separate episodes, leaving several others wounded and receiving treatment in a local hospital.

“The National leadership of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM) is deeply saddened by yet another tragic armed attack, allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani militants,” the statement read.

The group detailed the first incident, which occurred on the night of May 4, 2025, at approximately 8:11 pm, when attackers stormed Kakuruk village in the Gashish District of Barkin Ladi.

The assailants, armed with guns and machetes, killed three people and injured four others.

This assault followed another deadly episode the previous night.

“This follows the killing of another three individuals ambushed and shot dead on the night of May 3rd around the NTV area of Barkin Ladi LGA,” the youth leaders stated.

A visit to the General Hospital in Barkin Ladi confirmed the identities of those killed in the May 4 attack: Nyam Davou (44), Mrs. Kande Thoma (40), and her 6-month-old baby.

The injured survivors include Abigail Nyam (7), Helen Ishaya (45), Mafeng Markus (29), and Sarah Markus (40).

“The frequency and brazenness of these attacks are not only disturbing but also alarming,” the BYM said, expressing concern over the security situation in the area.

According to the group, warnings about unusual movements and an influx of suspicious individuals, allegedly militants posing as herders, had earlier been conveyed to authorities.

“Early warnings regarding suspicious movements and the influx of suspected militants, posing as herders, had been communicated to relevant authorities,” they emphasized.

The BYM further condemned the inadequate security deployment in vulnerable communities, noting it leaves residents continually at risk.

“The persistent inadequacy of security presence in vulnerable communities continues to leave residents exposed, as seen in this recent assault,” they said.

The association also recalled earlier tragedies in the area, citing mass killings in Gashish on August 23, 2018, and on Christmas Eve in 2023.

“This latest attack is a devastating blow to the few returnees of Gashish who are still recovering from previous massacres, particularly the genocidal attacks of August 23, 2018, and Christmas Eve 2023, which claimed over 230 lives,” the group stated.

Raising concerns over a rising presence of unfamiliar individuals in Plateau, the BYM urged authorities to take swift action.

“There is an influx of strange people into the state,” they warned, calling on security agencies to thoroughly investigate and respond.

Avoid Crisis Merchants, Stay Committed To Peace Talks – Eradiri Advises Fubara

Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Bayelsa State, Udengs Eradiri, has urged the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, to isolate himself from those he termed “crisis merchants” and remain focused on advancing the reconciliation process with his predecessor, Chief Nyesom Wike.

Speaking with journalists in Yenagoa, Eradiri praised Fubara for following his earlier recommendation to seek reconciliation by apologizing to Wike.

He recalled initial backlash from some Ijaw leaders when he made that suggestion, but expressed satisfaction that the embattled governor eventually acted on it.

“I was happy that you heeded my advice, got up from your comfort zone and initiated the reconciliation by first meeting with Chief Wike and apologising to him. You have done well, but you need to follow up this process,” Eradiri stated.

He urged Fubara to maintain distance from individuals he believes are fuelling the crisis and manipulating the governor into political missteps, including constitutional breaches.

“There are those trying to make an ethnic case out of the crisis and the others choreographing most political mistakes of Fubara and supervising some of his alleged constitutional breaches without guiding him properly,” he warned.

According to Eradiri, many of the governor’s so-called allies are actually undermining him for their own benefit.

“Most of the people, who claimed to love the governor and offered him pieces of advice, were his real enemies because they were profiting from the crisis and would not want it to end,” he said.

He further urged Fubara to reconnect with Wike and obey President Bola Tinubu’s peace roadmap to end the prolonged political stalemate.

“Thank God that President Tinubu saved you through the declaration of emergency rule. This opportunity has offered you a second chance; please, do not bungle it,” he advised.

“First, make yourself unreachable to those who will come and slow this process down and feed you with unsolicited advice to abort this reconciliation,” Eradiri added.

He also criticized recent behavior by some of Fubara’s supporters, particularly the walkout staged by pro-Fubara women during an event attended by First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu.

He cautioned that such acts could derail the fragile peace process.

“Such an action is condemnable in the reconciliation process. It can derail and slow down the process of peace as well as cast doubts on the suspended governor’s sincerity to end the political crisis in the state,” he said.

Calling for discipline within Fubara’s camp, Eradiri stated: “The suspended governor must rein in his supporters and stop them from all forms of protests capable of deepening the political discord in the state. He must be seen to walk his talk because every action of his supporters will be attributed to him.”

The former Ijaw Youths Council President appealed to all parties involved including Wike, the suspended state legislators, and others loyal to the minister, to forgive Fubara and help foster reconciliation.
